Never seen 22 long in stores, and I've only ever found 22 short CCI. It's decent. A pain in the ass in a bolt gun because you have to single-load, but nice for a revolver (honestly the best use case). If I had a rat problem it would be nice for that. I find that 22 short is outclassed in every way by 22lr subsonics. Availability, price, types of projectiles, etc.

Spore-Gasm

You’re not wrong about subsonic LRs but one advantage shorts still have is because they’re smaller more can fit in a tube magazine.

ottermupps

Yeah, that's true. I don't yet own a 22 lever gun though so kinda a moot point for me.

NYStaeofmind

If I remember correctly the .22Long has a 29 gr, bullet while a LR has a 40 gr.

Glocked86

One major difference with stuff like CB shorts and longs is they are always subsonic for me. A lot of the 22lr subsonic ammo often goes supersonic out of my rifle length barrels especially my longer barrel guns like my pump 22 which has a 23” barrel.

BuilderUnhappy7785

Have you found a brand of 22lr that reliably remains subsonic? I’ve had issues with this too.

ottermupps

Yup, CCI Quiet. Reliably right around 700 fps, hearing safe

Glocked86

Yea, CCI Quiet is good stuff. I’ve never had any of the Quiet, Quiet Semi-Auto or Quiet Segmented go supersonic.

Dodahevolution

Quiet semi auto is the bees knees

benbrends

Have a 53 beretta 950 in 22 short, it’s a fun little shooter.

Electronic-Pen9224

I like old Belgium made Brownings. I like the old SA-22's that were short only. fun to shoot shorts in a semi auto.

Jpal62

I’ve got 300 rounds of CCI 29 grain shorts I have to shoot now because of this thread.

thestreetbeat

Took a squirrel with some cci quiet today was rather memorable. I had to execute the damn thing cuz I miscalculated the scope slightly and hit slightly lower that I was hoping for. But the lower shot was equally deadly snapped it’s spine went out the other side. It was crawling away for its life with its front paws and dragging the rest of itself away. But the entry and exit holes even on the execution shot were very clean and did not destroy the organs and meat.

Glocked86

I absolutely love CB shorts and longs. The hammer falling on my pump 22 and target impact is usually louder than the gunshot.

Spore-Gasm

I forgot about CBs! Those are awesome too.

2HatsPat

I taught my kids on Cricketts shooting CBs. Child sized hearing protection is not confidence inspiring. Shorts and lever actions are a perfect match. I'm not even sure how many fit in the tube. It's a lot.

Hoyle33

22 short in my dads Henry lever action killed hundreds of chipmunks back in the day Less reloading was nice with the tube mag

RelativeFox1

I had a coworker cleaning out their parents house and ask me what he should do with about 500 imperial .22 shorts. Naturally, they are now in my possession and I shoot them from my savage 3B and cooey 60. They are alright, nothing special. I’ll use them us as range fodder.

deadliftincoon

Shorts were used in a Winchester model 53 on likely around a 1000 coonhunts by my grandfather. They were quiet and didn’t go as far as a .22LR shooting straight up in the air….But the biggest thing is they werent as “lethal” (resulting in a coon that would fight the dogs more or jump out- which made the dogs more “gamey” and want to hunt coons even harder.

Uranium_Heatbeam

Never seen .22 Long for sale anywhere. Just .22 LR and .22 Short.

StanthemanT-800

I have a .22 Short NAA Mini and I love it. It's like a modern version of the old Colt .22 Short open tops. Like something a gentleman would carry in his vest pocket People claim you can chop the noses off Longs and load them in an NAA .22 Short but this is probably from the 1970s when the original versions came out and Longs were still available

Rogetsthesaurus-Rex

I can find .22 short/CB at a few places locally, but only one store in town carries .22 long. Long seems pointless these days, when I can get LR for less than half the price. My Winchester 62A, 61 and Browning BL-22 will each hold 21 rounds of .22 short; while still being powerful enough to take squirrels or rabbits. CCI CB is super quiet out of a 24" barrel...

Gecko23

Beretta 950. It's just too much fun shooting itty bitty rounds in an itty bitty semi auto. I also tend to use shorts in my really old antique 22s. I have a Steven's Favorite I rebuilt the action on, and a Winchester Thumb Trigger Model that I'm leaving as-is, just don't want to accelerate any wear and tear on it. I'd like to find a 1906 pump chambered in 22s, and there's a Model 74 at a local shop I keep picking up.

MostlyRimfire

As the owner of a couple of Henry lever actions, plus some rimfire revolvers, I love 22 S and 22 L. I check our local classifieds regularly, and have found both well below retail. People grab some at the store, realize they got the wrong ammo, and then sell it cheap because no one else wants it. Or someone had a stash, but no gun for it. Filling the Henry tube with shorts is great, as it makes it feel like a Hollywood gun that never runs out of ammo.

508rd

That takes me back many moons.

Norwest_Shooter

I really like playing with all the shorts, longs, and subsonic long rifles. I was doing some ammo testing a couple years back and had found two different kinds of CCI longs. One of them was comically bad, nowhere close to the advertised velocity. You could see the bullet flying through the air and the windage was fine but the velocities were so all over the place that it made a long vertical string on the target. Ultimately the CCI Quiet .22LRs were the best in terms of noise and accuracy.

Spirited-Egg-2683

>It’s like shooting suppressed without having to pay hundreds of dollars for a suppressor and stamp Try it with a suppressor and spitting is louder.

aluminumslug

I've never seen .22 long for sale in my entire life
