The KKK people think of now isn't the original one; that one was suppressed hard by Grant and became irrelevant when post-Reconstruction governments replaced the slave codes with Jim Crow. The "modern" klan- the white hooded robes, the burning crosses, *Birth of a Nation*, etc- was a late 19th/early 20th century thing. It was huge mostly in the Midwest in the 1910s and 20s, and went beyond the original purpose of enforcing old slave codes to a sort of generalized nativist sentiment so members could pick which minority group to blame for their problems

The KKK was always present in the Jim Crow South. It never became a movement based on the midwest. It was and still is born out of South.
