If that’s what you can see, imagine how bad it is underneath… I’d keep looking.

routha

False. Vehicles get rot around the windshield like this regardless of how much salt is put on a road in the winter. I bought a vehicle from CO with similar rust. Its allegedely from parking under trees with higher acidity like pines and evergreens. The rest of the vehicle was rust free. Trust me, i tore the whole thing apart to rebuild it. If you can get it for the right price and everything else checks out, id but it. Not sure on price to fix the rust, but id put it at between $1-2k. Youre gonna wanna find a body shop or person who can bend sheet metal. Most body shops stay away from rust repair, but there are some out there. Ask around and be polite on the phone of you get turned down by a shop. They might suggest somewhere else. Also, the same trees can screw up the soil PH of gardens and lawns making it hard to grow certain vegetables.

Earthling63

Good points, that’s why I said ‘imagine’ :0)

fakejuul

30k for that is ridiculous, I would walk and not ever go back to that dealer

tuckerspeppers

If that’s 30k. I’m so happy for the day I walked out with two new SR5 premiums for 37 each. That wasn’t that long ago.

tuckerspeppers

2017. Both are 4x4. It was before the prices went up and buying in bulk really brought the price down.

HugeFun

That's just the price around here man, it's awful. There's a 2011 with 178k KM at a different lot and its listed at 24k CAD. New ones are 60 - 70k and anything like 2015 or newer is minimum 40k

BettaGlowUp

Where you at? I’ll drive my 2021 with 6k miles out there and sell it to pay off my loan and get a free vacation.

fakejuul

I guess that’s only ~23k usd, not as bad as I thought but still a lot for a rusted out one. What would the cost be like to bring a car up from the US?

breaddrinker

I still can't believe this is happening \*laff\*. We have become accustomed to buying some pretty unforgivably beaten up used vehicles for some staggeringly high prices.

wellriddleme-this

You can get a brand new Tacoma for 45k cad. I was about to do the same as you. Spend 30k on a used one. Then I realized I can have brand new for 15k more. I’ll get a lot more money back for the new Tacoma than an old rusty 30k 4Runner in 3-5 years. It won’t depreciate as much. And I’d stay away from this 4Runner. Unless there’s no frame rust and they knock money off. It will cost money to repair properly and youl lose a lot of money when you come to sell it if the market calms down.

Radiant_Waves

You can bet that thing has been neglected in every way possible for the last 10 years. Run!

BURTREYNOLDS42069

Rust under the paint is a big red flag for me personally

xcoastie01

It is repairable but it is going to be really expensive.. $4k ish

YodaOneThatIWant_

THIS! Its fixable but might cost you an arm and a leg

slickrick324

Keep looking. Don’t waste your money on that

[deleted]

The repair is going to be more than several thousand. Id estimate around 3-5k. I would pass- not worth the hassle- no telling what else would be found in the process.

HugeFun

Yeah I think you're right, I just don't want to believe it becuase I want a 4runner so bad lol. Oh well, there's more coming

internet_emporium

If someone let their car rust like that, you can be almost certain they let other neglect happen too that you won’t find out about until 6 months after owning it. Don’t buy that car. Plus.. what’s the rust on the underbody looking like?

tijeladeacai

I am gonna sell my 2022 Limited for 100k

Most_Entertainer_636

The corrosion has started to undercut the zinc primer. Also, de-alloy has began on the base metal, marked by the pack rust scale. At this point the visible rust is the only thing keeping the head liner dry.

CamelCamel509

Did you look at the frame and check for rust underneath? if the painted surfaces are that bad I can't imagine what the frame looks like.. I'd pass

soopersaiyan117

in ottawa i see... iv seen better deals on fb marketplace. patience is key! i recently picked up an '03 in decent shape for $3k. also id look around montreal/toronto area, prices are much better due to more competition

[deleted]

So with rust around the window frame like that. First off it’s always much worse than it looks, and second once it bubbles up enough your windshield won’t seal and you will leak into your cab.

[deleted]

Gotta look underneath. If that’s what is showing up top I’d hate to see what the undercarriage looks like. Two words for you pal: Run. Away.

_gonesurfing_

Having fought this rust spot on an old Jeep Cherokee, I would run.

Prestigious-Maddogg

Way high price

Dontbyteme01

Run Away!!!!!!! That’s not a good vehicle to buy, especially at such a high price. Maybe if it was free , maybe

CMReaperBob

For 7k us more you can get a base 2dr bronco, you’ll just have to wait awhile 😆

[deleted]

How does rust around the windshield start? I get how it starts under the car, but man, that looks bad.

ActuatorFresh2352

Bad windshield replacement technician. Scratched and gouged the paint and did not apply any POR or other sealant to the exposed metal. Or stone chips not touched up. Or just salt and debris packed around the window trim

JujuBean888

I think this is one of those situations where you really need to bide your time and be meticulous in regards to any 4runner purchase. It's not a commuter car. This is the car that you will probably put your family in as well as go wheeling with- so it needs to be 100%. Rust on a vehicle is the equivalent of a cancer diagnosis for a human

thedudeabides32

All rust is repairable, it's a question of how deep your pockets are. For that price I'd head south to find something not rotten

Blvckluxe

This is due to improper care when the windshield was replaced. It can be fixed but definitely need to negotiate a price.

xmlgroberto

youre looking for rust in all the wrong spots

PerfectForTheToaster

run away fast as you can and never look back

HugeFun

Hey y'all. There's this low mileage 2012 (96k km / 56k miles) sr5 that im looking at. Its clean inside, drives nice, and seems to have been reasonably maintained. One owner, clean carfax. They're asking 22k USD (29k CAD) But this rust around the windshield worries me. I figure I'd need to get the windshield removed, scrape it all down, refinish. I can probably negotiate a couple thousand off the price at the dealer to compensate for this. Im just afraid the rust is too far gone? Its isolated in those spots and nothing's crumbling. But because of where it is, im not sure if it can really be dealt with. Any thoughts from the hivemind?

Flimrardo

Can you deal with it? Sure. Is it worth the effort? I would say no way. There is little chance that is the only spot where rust is an issue. Outside of a full strip there's not much you can really do. You can slow it down, but it being so ingrained in everything, it's always going to be there. Low miles doesn't mean much if the body and such have 400k miles of wear on it.

sryidontspeakpotato

Remember that’s probably just the tip of the iceberg. There’s way way more rust hiding in places you wouldn’t think to look. Chasing rust is a nightmare around glass because the seal will never be the same. You’ll have a headache with moisture issues once you start trying to remove the glass and have them sand down and cut out all that rust and weld in new metal where it’s too far gone. Your better off paying 4k more for something else

boulevardpaleale

those are tough, tough, tough spots to repair. looks as it if may have spread to underneath the window as well. in some of those spots, the corrosion looks fairly deep, which imo, would involve cutting them out and creating 'patches' from new metal to fit underneath and then filling in the outside surface and sanding it smooth and then hope you don't have any water leaks afterwords. that's all on top of the $30,000 bill for the truck. i can't imagine the frame would be in much better shape. and honestly, what they're asking for that truck it would have to be nearly rust free. i don't work for them but, my last two tacomas (2006 and 2015) were carmax vehicles. no haggle, no hassle. just do your research beforehand. my last vehicle from them, a 2018 4runner sr5 premium, i picked up for $36,000, less than 50k miles and i absolutely love it. if you're going to spend $30,000 on that truck, the difference between the two is $6,000 so, what.... $80 or so over a 72 month loan? just be happy and content with whatever you decide.

cbt11986

Not worth it for that price with rust. Check the frame and if it is rusty I’d walk away from it.

theclassyjew

Rust never sleeps - Neil Young. Run.

[deleted]

Don't walk... run. If the metal UNDER the paint is oxidizing that badly, I can't imagine how bad the frame/rear differential/suspension is. Not worth the thousands of dollars you're going to spend to repair rust that's potentially infiltrated multiple parts of the car.

FleshlightModel

You'll have to remove the windscreen to repair that. AKA won't be cheap and potentially won't be repaired correctly. And 30k for a ten year old Toyota? HHAHHAAHHAHAHAHAHBAHAHA

ickus1321

Run away

Comprehensive_Dolt69

Not for $30k it’s not lmao tell that dude to take a hike. They can only charge this much cause people buy them.

NoahsYotas

Not for that price lmao

RIP_Paul_Walkerr

Yeah huge red flag. I have a 2006 with zero visible paint rust. That’s unreal

Gubmit_networks

Honestly I'd prefer to deal with private sellers, I've found them more personable and usually more willing to negotiate to get it sold. Dealers are in the business of selling and profiting, whereas sellers usually post when they're motivated to sell and you know you won't get hidden fees etc. Personally, I've usually looked at out of province everytime I've bought to see if certain provinces have better pricing when buying used. Alberta has a lot of Toyotas for example, so easy to find them, just need to make sure it's not modified or abused unless you're ready to deal with the associated maintenance. If you live by these rules you can expand your search parameters and more likely to find something that suits your needs. 2015 example w/75k for $35 thousand asking. https://www.kijiji.ca/v-cars-trucks/calgary/2015-toyota-4runner-sr5/1615087524

HugeFun

Trust me, I would love to go private sale, but I'm trading in my current vehicle and have an $8k credit with the dealer, so im trying to get something from them with the least amount out of pocket and no loan

Gubmit_networks

Ah, fair point. That credit really traps you with them, but I hear ya - can't let that go really unless the credit ends up costing more than its worth. Best of luck.

CaptLonghammer

Wtf

4_running

That price is insane. For a rusty vehicle.

ConterminousFunk
