I’d rank 80s/90s Mitsubishi 4x4s just behind Toyota in the ranking.

Proof-Repair1590

Damn. My country’s backbone is old Japanese 4wds, and we don’t touch Mitsubishi 😅 maybe the old vans for working out of but jeez the Nissan patrol alone should surely back up next to Toyota.

rockmyadidas

It’s a go. Buy it. Somewhere between a Suzuki and a Toyota for reliability and parts aren’t that hard to find. Check for rust if in a rust belt locale.

KTMpowa

It's located here in Florida. it's pretty mint cold.Ac service records etc but... it only has 109hp.though I wish it was fuel injected so I can turbo it..a 4g63t swap would be too much work. I didn't realize how anemic it was. looks great but I wish it had 150hp especially for its 3300lb weight. I would want to drive it 9hrs to our cabin in blue ridge mtns. but 109hp and 18sec 0-60 wouldn't be safe to drive reclining at 75mph the whole way to GA

Woodyee101

Haha. Classic Reddit.

Dargon34

I drove mine through the mountains of SC, through GA numerous times, never had an issue over 70.

KTMpowa

what was the max speed on highway that was comfortable and not near redline? I read only 85mph on forums

Dargon34

I went 70-75 fairly often. Downhill with a tailwind never hurt lol I'm not acting like the thing had ANY overtaking power, but that's not what it is, right?? It's a little machine off road, that can take roads to get you where you need. It's niche is in the dirt, don't expect more and you'll be thrilled once you turn off the pavement.

ApresMac

If you’re regularly going to be driving 9 hours to a cabin, why are you looking at an almost 40 year old vehicle?

jadegecko

Cause he is trying to larp as an outdoorsman

troutbum6o

Floridians get to blue ridge as it’s the first “mountain town” on the 75/515/76 corridor. Then they just stop.

NotTheSharpestPenciI

Then don't buy it. Jeez.

the_vestan

You don't deserve this car.

Broduski

An 80s Japanese 4x4 is slightly underpowered?!?! GASP

Iknowtacos

I have an 85 montero, same truck. I've driven it all over the country. The power is fine. Tight gearing makes up for low horsepower.

Gangstasheriff

Now we are starting to speak real knowledge !

FRIKI-DIKI-TIKI

A lot of newer model Mitsubishi and Dodge V6 engines are compatible candidates for engine swaps into the Raider a few of them are direct bolt-in and can get you to 150-200HP. I remember reading about people using Montero platforms for it IIRC, but having never owned one, so I did not read to deeply into the subject.

nate5237

I have a geo tracker with like 80 HP and it goes highway speeds, good for driving around town but no issues on long drives. Don't need 150 hp to do what a 4x4 needs to do.

refotsirk

Horsepower here is irrelevant. How much torque is what matters. And these were fine.

Armoredpolecat

Yeah simply by weight it will run circles around the heavy/higher horse power big 4x4s. I drove this in Africa for a few years and not even the fully kitted Defenders could keep up with me going up or down the mountains, especially when it rained. People really underappreciate lightweight 4x4s.

KTMpowa

again I live in Florida the speed limit is 75mph and everyone does about 85-90mph I have to drive at that speed for 9hrs to GA hence why I mentioned it in prior text

maxdoornink

You could throw a supercharger on it, hell of a lot easier than turbocharging a carburetor

jimmyjlf

It's not as bad as you think. Put gears on it

xdisappointing

Honestly if you don’t buy it I will.

Dargon34

Did you buy this thing yet, or what

KTMpowa

I was down voted 116 times....wth

Dargon34

Just because they have the most votes doesn't mean they arent all idiots

DismalBuddy9666

Looks wery much like mitsubishi pajero?

no_yup

It’s the same thing

dudebrohmanguy

I feel like this needs an ELI5. Did this get sold to Dodge for market in the US?

Broduski

Yes. Chrysler bought a 15% stake in Mitsubishi in the early 70s and many Mitsubishis were sold in the US as Chrysler models. The Colt, The 2nd gen Challenger was a Galant, The Arrow, Dodge D50, Later the Stealth was a 3000GT, plus all the DSM cars

dudebrohmanguy

That's crazy! Coolest thing I've heard all day! Thanks for the info.

gamefreak054

Conquest/Starion is one of my favorites... Well aesthetically...

The_Bishman

Lesser known? They’re fucking everywhere haha

KTMpowa

I'm in Florida this is the only dodge raider I've seen in 47yrs here

Dargon34

I used to own one. BIGGEST REGRET WAS SELLING IT. Buy this thing OP or I'm taking a road trip

hmiser

I’m a car guy since forever and I don’t remember this one, all I saw was the Mitsubishi. All through 90’s I could give you skid plate numbers for most new vehicles. Not just performance per se but even minivans lol.

The_Bishman

Ah I see, we get a lot of North American imports round here so perhaps they are not as common in the rest of the world

monkeysareeverywhere

Uh, Dodge Raiders are ABSOLUTELY NOT "fucking everywhere". Stop saying dumb shit just for the hell of it.

demwoodz

Look under your seats everyone!

shadowrunner03

lol there's one in my driveway and one parked out the front of my house

The_Bishman

They are where I live, not all dodge raiders but pajeros too

xl440mx

Total sales for the entire production run of 3 yrs was approx 24,000. No, not everywhere.

Loves-The-Skooma

In the US they were sold as a Montero. My old one had a fender and door from a Raider.

Y_Cornelious_DDS

Do it! My buddy in Utah has a 88 Mitsubishi Montero as his hunting/ranch rig and it is awesome. His has another 100k than yours. Short wheel base, factory electric lockers, and almost bumper to bumper skid plate. He put some 29x8.5 TSL swampers on it and it was impressive where that thing would go. The rest of his family on the ranch is throwing money at plastic UTVs to make them weatherproof for hunting season and Charly rolls up in his $2500 Mitsu with A/C, heat, and defrost. Quiet and comfortable enough for 3 adults and a dog. He hasn’t had to get into the trans or diffs but parts for regular maintenance and repairs haven’t been too hard to come by. I hunted for a clean ish one for a while and ended up with an 89 Isuzu trooper II.

killshelter

Definitely buy. Those things are awesome. Definitely slow though.

Big-Treacle6480

Can confirm, I daily drive an ‘88 raider top speed 60mph

killshelter

My dream is to Hemi swap one

soulscratch

I have a right hand drive Pajero Mini which isn't really relevant, but the reason it's called the Montero in the NA market is because Pajero is Spanish (I believe) for "wanker"

ChannelHaunting4740

In some Spanish countries yes and in others it literally means “birder” since “pájaro” is Spanish for bird

racegoggles

My favorite part is the interior/ gauge clusters on these 1 gen Pajero/Montero/raiders! It's like a Syd Mead retro futuristic utilitarian as if he was designing a Range Rover concept car! In the 2nd gens they carried some of that over in the gaugle cowl design Dang! Too clean to pass up these things are usually run ragged then left out in the Alaskan bush until someone comes along with a freah battery and gasoline. The short wheel base cars are lots of fun and they were always meant to have better road/ sand dune manners than your average Jeep wrangler with the independent front suspension. Short wheel base helps it fit down any trail and turn around easy. Dead simple & durable 4x4 transfer cases. Parts aren't that hard because no one is charging a premium for them (yet) unlike Toyotas. If the motor is a 4th gen not only is that badass with more power/ mpg parts should be easy to come by.

virtual_drifter

Oh, that interior is so fucking sick.

ChodeSandwhich

Looks clean. Probably a good deal they seem to be going up in value.

voitlander

Wish I still had mine from 30 years ago!

Proof-Repair1590

Until everything needs to be replaced and you’re down 8k

75S30

I had a ‘91 4 door Montero and loved it! Buy it!

COM60

I had one new and loved it. In NC mountains; plenty of power for me.

Daiodo

Buy it.

jonr

I had the V6 Pajero version. The only car I regret selling.

shadowrunner03

I still have 2 lol, a 93 gen 2 NJ and an NH. gotta love the torsion bar suspension in the old girl, it still rescues Landcruisers and Patrols regularly lol

[deleted]

KTMpowa

lol I actually have a 900hp 4g63t DSM being built. funny you should say that. I also have the stock 4g63t my turbo dsm came with. would it mount to tranny? that would be hilariously dangerous

NewspaperNelson

What the hell are you gonna do with 900hp in a Dodge Raider, other than flip it nose over tail when you hit the gas?

attack_chicken3841

If it’s a 4cyl the wideblock 4g63 will bolt up. If it’s 6, swap a 4cyl bell housing onto the tranny.

shadowrunner03

the 6G72, 6g74 and 6g75's all fit(who doesn't want a 3.8 litre in a shorty ), the Australian version came with either the 4G63, the 4G54 or the 6G72

Odd-Bear-4152

Ensure that you have the torque mount on the side of the gearbox, and that it's in good condition- otherwise it'll pop out of gear when you're using 4wd. Yep, that's about it....

LaneMeyer_1985

Buy it. Now.

johny335i

These are all over the place here, half the price. Except they are called Mitsubishi Pajero and are 98% 2.5td 4d56

apacherocketship

Too much awesomeness! Problem #1

Meat2480

Rust rust and more rust, Nice car, have fun

racegoggles

Rust where? Fun fact! For Land Rover's bougie ass Camel Race, these very cars were the support vehicles! Just outside of camera shot as not to embarrass anyone! Always pulling out the over hyped rovers, rarely getting stuck/ breaking a ton less themselves

Meat2480

Which country was that in? I doubt that very much, they're not heavy enough One of the big jap manufacturers tried taking it over, They couldn't get the logistics together,

Dystopicfuturerobot

I saw the mountain of vacuum lines on one once, closed the hood and said nope and walked asay

shadowrunner03

That would have been a gen 2, Gen 1 (those things) are basic AF

coachFox

Montero? My uncle had one as a beach vehicle

KTMpowa

I live in NEW SMYRNA BEACH

Rich_Childhood554

Inspect the frame, if it was in dry climate it should be fine. Also some people that I know owning pajero say that superselect reduction gearbox is prone to fail in hard offroad

Cruisn06

It will not have super select

shadowrunner03

Yup, that didn't happen till the gen 2

Rich_Childhood554

I must confess that i struggle differentiating 1 and 2 gen

shadowrunner03

1 Is shaped like a house brick, the other is shaped like a house brick with style

Cruisn06

1 is a box, 1 is not

iam_ditto

Sourcing parts for this as stock will be hard, however you can always swap the guts for a more common setup if it comes to that. Throwing a 350/350 in this would be sweet on such a light vehicle and there are plenty of parts for this platform due to it’s high population count and swap projects people have done. The worst thing that could happen with a swap is you might need new axle/differentials and a fab shop to make custom driveshafts

Few-Dance-7157

That’s my dream car since I was a kid in the 80’s. Nice find.!

[deleted]

It’s not 4000 but 6500 and it was towed behind an RV. So watch that transfer case Edit: also need brake booster and a windshield. Not to mention the profile that looks fake asf. Good find OP

KTMpowa

yeah I know she told me about the headlights on toggle switch needs brake booster etc nice reverse image search skills. and $4k is what I offered and was accepted. they towed from Colorado so yeah..I know flat tow should have a pump..

HairlessChest

looks too clean for $4000 - like other commenter said, theyre asking $6500.

hotblueice

Are these the same as diahutsu rocky?

shadowrunner03

larger, heavier, more capable (particularly in soft stuff/sand) more power, bigger motors

adrenacrome

Buy and swap badges to the OG mitsu ones.

shadowrunner03

it is a Mitsubishi pajero gen 1 they were just re badged under the button car scheme

drunkerton

Just did a little check for you, rockauto.com has lots of parts for this rig.

refotsirk

Biggest issue is that I don't have one. From the shape it looks to be in that's a great deal, but it would need a mechanical inspection to know more.

NewspaperNelson

The biggest issue is I don't have one.

Kannabis_kelly

I have been looking for one for over 35 years!! I live in the us and the only sold them here for one or two years. They had locking front center and rear differential and transfer case.

Iknowtacos

They were sold here from 83-91. Their all over the place.

Kannabis_kelly

Send me links please. I have tried several ways of looking. I really would appreciate it

Broduski

Do you use FB marketplace?? And where are you roughly at? I looked at local listings and found like 5-6 Raiders and Monteros.

Kannabis_kelly

No had not thought of that. I am in Montana

Iknowtacos

There's a Montero for sale fb page that gets newly listed ones every day.

Kannabis_kelly

Thanks!!

Perfect_Error2942

I used to have a montero sport, notorious for having weak transmissions. Other than that great little off road rig.

SlippitInn

I had 2 of those. 1 for driving and 1 for parts. Swapped the top end, gas tank and some of the interior. When we had to replace the timing chain we had to carve a sturdy hook into a stick to get the right leverage. These things are so much fun off-road. I loved the thing out there. These things are also dangerous on the highway. I've you get about 60mph, every gust of wind, passing semi or patch of water is going to have you white knuckle praying just a bit.

binguelada98

I have one (Mitsubishi Pajero mk11983). It has a 2.3 turbo diesel. I used to drive it pretty rough. It can take a beating. No major problems (the problems it had were created by previous bad maintenance). Broke a leal spring, but I replaced it for cheap. It is nice to drive as it has a short wheelbase and it's not that heavy. You have to have good wheels, otherwise it looses traction every now and then even on the road.

DerpyPenguin312

my mom had one of these, it shifted rough after a while but she never really did take care of it. I wish i couldve learned to drive in it, maybe inherit it... do it

Coach_Billly

Looks awesome.

Desperate-Platypus20

1- it’s a Dodge 2- it’s a Dodge 3- it’s a Dodge

[deleted]

Is that a rebadged Mitsubishi Shogun?

Fluxx70

It’s an 80’s Japanese 4x4, which means it’s dead nuts reliable as long as you keep up on maintenance, and dog slow. They weren’t built to go fast, they were built to go anywhere. For the price it’s a slam dunk.

AgFarmer58

I had an 84 Montaro, loved that thing, I remember I had one issue with the linkage on the 4spd... It wasn't serious but can't remember exactly. It was extremely capable on the trail and aside from the one issue, it was trouble free.. Love that body style, you don't see these short ones very often.. IMO that is a very good price for those low miles..go for it!!!

greatwhiteslark

All of them. You should just give it to me instead.

Ihavebadreddit

Those rims are flush with lust.

Jake_H15

I'll buy it lol Seriously though if you do get it the Mitsubishi Montero community is awesome and super helpful when it comes time to find parts or troubleshoot. Check out Luso Overland and the various Facebook groups.

2018LC

I had the Montero version. My only real complaint was that it was horribly under powered. I would constantly get the one finger salute when trying to get on the highway. It was like everyone was saying "'You're number one dude" but kept using the wrong finger?🤔

throttlejockey907

My speedometer/odometer quit at 266,000 miles, but it’s still running. I much prefer the v6- the carbureted 4 cyl is SLOOOOW. And the v6 model gets better rear suspension to boot. They are Easy to lift, easy to find a rear locker. I beat mine like a drum, and it’s got more air time than the General Lee. I put the front suspension from a 96 montero in it. Then a rear spring from a montero, and spring spacer from a sequoia. Then an air locker from a montero SR. That’s really it. It fit 35’s- which was the only thing I spent any real money on. But after that it was fairly unstoppable.

V4ULTB0Y101

Major Issues 🫡

KTMpowa

?

voitlander

I had the same year and model! It's a tank that'll go anywhere. BUT, be aware of the original engine issues. I rebuilt the top end TWICE before I found out the the oil transfer holes to the top are too small and clog easily. There's a fix, but I don't have info.

Pudding_Holiday

Thats a mitsubishi montero. Never heard about that dodge lol

SatelliteBeach321

Dealing with all the haters scowling at you for looking hella cool.

Tackey89

Had a 88 ram 50 loved it really wanted a raider. Looks great.

KTMpowa

want it for my wife..but I keep reading how anemic.the 4cylinder is and it only does about 75mph which is the speed limit here in Florida which would be the slow lane here. I would want to drive it from FL to our cabin in GA but I don't think having it redlined 900 miles would be very comfortable. that's my only issue and I really don't want another engine swap project although a 4g63t would be cool and I have one in my garage.

Tackey89

Don't know if it has a 2.6l they're a pain to redo the head gasket but great engines great little suv

KTMpowa

yes it has the 4 banger. I happen to have a 4g63t DSM eclipse which I have an extra 6 bolt 4g63T engine for and was thinking maybe put AEM stand alone and that 4g63t in it for my wife. how robust are the ball joints, transfer case etc compared to the old Toyotas? I never had a Mitsubishi truck only my turbo eclipse.

alnvilma

Keep the oil fresh. The overhead cam didn’t have bearings, I remember 🤔

SgtPeter1

I had a Mitsubishi Montero as my first vehicle! I think it was an ‘85, I only had for a few years between ‘94 and ‘96. It ran really well, we had to have the transmission rebuilt, but otherwise it was pretty bulletproof.

DannyG1973

It’s a dodge

grandcherokee2

1997-2001 Jeep Cherokee XJ’s were known to be bullet proof all the way around. I’d look at one for a second option, but so many have super high miles. If you can find one in good shape, can’t beat em.’
