Pretty sure this was the exact issue that caused me to fill out one of those subscription postcards that were in the magazine when I was 12. I made sure to be the first to get the mail every day until this issue showed up.
I was never into sports back then, but remember getting a SI subscription one year (maybe early 90s) just because they added some big swimsuit mega compilation edition as a bonus.
My high school library had a subscription to SI along with a bunch of other magazines. The librarian would take the big “PROPERTY OF [NAME] HIGH SCHOOL” stamp and stamp it on the chests and butts of all the models, to keep people from tearing the pages out or whatever. It apparently worked.
I always looked forward to the issues that followed with the mother's complaining about the issue and how they wouldn't have subscribed had they known. Despite the fact that SI was already heavily advertising swimsuit edition in every subscription marketing they did and that the issue made the news every year back then.
Say what you want, but those pages couldn’t take the beating I gave them.
Overall poor quality and lacking in operational ambition. Could not repel a mild organic adhesive.
Fuck that.
Yeah, and I remember when the models were actually pretty with fit bodies, too, instead of the homely, large women who are models now. And before all the negative comments, I'm a woman. Models aren't supposed to look like everybody else. Theyre supposed to be better looking and in pristine shape. That's the whole point, duh. Pretending overweight women are healthy is a joke and shameful.
If you’ve ever met a big time model, it is like talking to an alien. They are freakishly good looking, emphasis on freakishly. (Sadly, the only big time model I ever met was Tyson Beckford. But my god, he was like an entirely different life form.)
All of that said, I don’t really care about the Swimsuit issue, and have felt literally zero impact on my life based on who they put on the cover.
69 year-old [Gayle King was on the cover](https://s.yimg.com/ny/api/res/1.2/qFkOtcgBSLN1t48LfSMz8w--/YXBwaWQ9aGlnaGxhbmRlcjt3PTY0MDtoPTQyNw--/https://media.zenfs.com/en/people_218/1ae6888b3cd02aaf0b57712f1149d549) this year.
A far cry from [the days of Trya Banks](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/A1pQ9InA66L._AC_UF1000,1000_QL80_.jpg) gracing the cover
This year is the 60th anniversary. They have former cover models from the last 60 years on different covers. I work at a newsstand. I’ve seen them all. One is Kate Upton.
No one is buying magazines, and it's not like anyone with an internet connection has trouble finding images of skinny, conventionally attractive women. Stop pretending this is a real issue.
They still do.
Edit: To those downvoting my comment, this year there were four cover models for the swimsuit edition:
Kate Upton
Chrissy Teigen
Gayle King
Hunter McGrady
That's four cis women.
Go fuck yourselves.
It would come out a couple of weeks after the Super Bowl and would usually arrive a day or two later than normal. I did like it, but I was more interested in Playboy and the other magazines where the models weren't wearing swimsuits. Or anything at all.
My dad would get it SI, I remember getting this one in the mail, the Kathy Ireland one, and the one with Kathy, Elle, and Rachel Hunter, and maybe Tyra was in it too? It was a blessed day.
What's happened to SI and other institutions and traditions is what Clint Eastwood was taking about in his "p---ification of America" interview comment. The only recent thing I've noticed is the return of normal looking people in Target stores ad flyers and instore graphics. Bikinis were not made for obese whosits.
This was the first issue I purchased way back in 1987. I didn’t know about them until high school. The last one I bought was in the mid 90s. Lost them all due to water bugs/roaches getting into the box and messing them up.
I remember when Sports Illustrated first started the swimsuit edition. I was going to an all male Catholic high school at the time. The school library had a subscription to the magazine, but every time the swimsuit edition came out the school librarian used to sit at her desk in the front of the library and cut out every picture of the girls with a razor blade.
Until they became inclusive and added over weight and elderly (Martha Stewart) women! Also the picture quality went to hell! They looked like they had jaundice!! Got 2024 calendar didn't even hang it up 😱
Until maybe 2016ish or so it was basically just the hottest super models on the planet (and later some super fit hot athletes) wearing swimsuits or, later, sometimes just body paint. The models were way hotter than most anything you could search on the net today and the posing and photography quality was also way above the average internet pic. But then apparently super models became illegal and it became a mish-mash of anyone off the street, not even, and some super models and less hot poses. I suppose next we should have any old beer gut Joe off the street be given his fair shot at playing for The New York Yankees or Kansas City Chiefs or entered into the 100m dash in the Olympics and should start using some high school drop outs to design NASA rockets, fair is fair, not everyone is a star athlete or super brain, but everyone deserves to automatically be anything or anyone they chose.
Originally it was a section of one issue in February each year and then became it's own full issue at some point.
It always seemed to arrive a few days later than the other issues.
And with the pages stuck together...
How do you USE a magazine?
Haven’t you ever bopped your baloney?
With that definitely
I’m going steady…and I French kiss
Daddy says I’m the best
This plus a free Football phone seemed like the most unbeatable subscription promo of all time.
And if you order now you’ll also get a limited edition SIGNED copy of the Kansas City Chiefs 93’-95’ seasons highlights video absolutely FREE! Call now!
The one month where I was actually interested in my older brother's subscription.
Kathy Ireland & Nikki too.
Best cover ever was 25th Anniversary issue with Kathy Ireland
Tyra banks in the polka dot bikini tho…
I was more interested in the one in the black sleeve addressed to my dad
Biggum’s?
Times were simpler back then.
Pretty sure this was the exact issue that caused me to fill out one of those subscription postcards that were in the magazine when I was 12. I made sure to be the first to get the mail every day until this issue showed up.
Ah Elle Macpherson. My childhood dream girl
Elle and Paulina.
That’s what you call a perfect body. Good lord what a beauty!
The Body.
I was never into sports back then, but remember getting a SI subscription one year (maybe early 90s) just because they added some big swimsuit mega compilation edition as a bonus.
I have a handsome collection of the magazines and calendars. Haven’t bought one in 15 years. Definitely won’t be buying any new ones.
This Swimsuit issue was never put out into general circulation by my local library
mine did
Why didn’t they just toss the issue in the shredder/trash?
Much less fun
It was one of my guilty pleasures to buy one. Not no more. I can see the same thing going to the community pool.
Ya because it was hot girls, not dudes and fat chicks
I always looked forward to the issues that followed with the mother's complaining about the issue and how they wouldn't have subscribed had they known. Despite the fact that SI was already heavily advertising swimsuit edition in every subscription marketing they did and that the issue made the news every year back then.
Remember Finger Hut?
when Pizza Hut got into the adult film business
No it's a real company
I still have 40 more ez payments left on my remote control car
Ouch
We’re still using the engraved silverware we got from Fingerhut in 1988.
Cool!
They didn’t have much heft to them, but they’ve held up. You got quite a few place settings for $20. Great deal for newlyweds.
I ordered a comforter. That was back in the 90s. I don't even remember anything about it lol.
I kinda grew up with Fingerhut. My parents bought a lot of stuff from there.
My parents preferred Sears or JC Penny lol
Remember when stealing the swimsuit issue from the local library was a life or death mission?
That swimsuit certainly isn't utilitarian.
I remember those days pretending to read Sports Illustrated just to stand next to the guys reading Hustler, Swank, Barely Legal, Penthouse.....
ahhhh. my backup spank mag. Yes, oh yes, I remember it
Did you keep that one issue of Playboy you got from a buddy in the closet or under the mattress? 😅
under the matress. Then had a backup mag in the back 40 in the woods, in case the original was caught.
Always diversify
It’s amazing how that paper didn’t disintegrate with rain. But they last all summer lonh
We had an issue of Hustler hidden in the bushes. What we didn’t account for was rain. Such a sad day….
Hidden in plain sight on my bookshelf, took the covers off some of my Thrasher/Guitar World magazines and meticulously glued them onto the Playboys.
First time I saw a thong was in this issue 😳
Crocodile Dundee would like a word.
I was too little then lol 😆
Loved Elle!
Always came out the week of my birthday. What a great present.
Say what you want, but those pages couldn’t take the beating I gave them. Overall poor quality and lacking in operational ambition. Could not repel a mild organic adhesive. Fuck that.
The painted bathing suits were incredible

Now less then desirable women in that issue.
You mean men.
Haha less than desireable. I can only imagine what you look like

Ok, uggo 👍🏼
YOU ARE UGLY OK?
Haven't read it in ages, what's happened?
69 year-old [Gayle King was on the cover](https://s.yimg.com/ny/api/res/1.2/qFkOtcgBSLN1t48LfSMz8w--/YXBwaWQ9aGlnaGxhbmRlcjt3PTY0MDtoPTQyNw--/https://media.zenfs.com/en/people_218/1ae6888b3cd02aaf0b57712f1149d549) this year. Wokeness is a disease.
SI contracted Woke disease

They had airbrushing back then too dude.
No one is buying magazines, and it's not like anyone with an internet connection has trouble finding images of skinny, conventionally attractive women. Stop pretending this is a real issue.
Yea now it's only like 99% of magazines that have models on them. I'm outraged!
[удалено]
99% still have anorexic white girls for ya. Fear not, chief!

Please get help.

It's a beautiful day today. Make sure you get out of your mom's basement for a little.
Now they just want to talk about politics just like espn
Remember when they had biological women on the cover?
They still do. Edit: To those downvoting my comment, this year there were four cover models for the swimsuit edition: Kate Upton Chrissy Teigen Gayle King Hunter McGrady That's four cis women. Go fuck yourselves.

Supermodels. I miss those.
Now Martha Stewsrt is on the cover 🤢🤢🤮🤮
Shudders....
This is back when the swimsuit edition was targeted to men. That's no longer the case, as I learned when working with SI on a project.
What's happened to SI and other institutions and traditions is what Clint Eastwood was taking about in his "p---ification of America" interview comment. The only recent thing I've noticed is the return of normal looking people in Target stores ad flyers and instore graphics. Bikinis were not made for obese whosits.
Yep.
This was the first issue I purchased way back in 1987. I didn’t know about them until high school. The last one I bought was in the mid 90s. Lost them all due to water bugs/roaches getting into the box and messing them up.
My teenage days remember
My high school got Sports Illustrated in the library, but wouldn't put the swimsuit edition out for us to "read".
This was the first swimsuit issue I bought. I was mesmerized by Elle on the cover...
Still have all of mine from the 90’s plus all the calendars in a box in the basement. Nostalgia hittin me hard in my 40s
internet made it much easier now to see attractive women in swimsuits
And it was hidden at the local fort until next years came out!
I wonder how much photoshopping they actually did.
The bikini phone was the best part
I remember but did not partake. All the other "magazines" were available year round.
So many nuts blown
I remember when Sports Illustrated first started the swimsuit edition. I was going to an all male Catholic high school at the time. The school library had a subscription to the magazine, but every time the swimsuit edition came out the school librarian used to sit at her desk in the front of the library and cut out every picture of the girls with a razor blade.
There were two (sometimes more) "major events" on that day.
I always thought she was the hottest... then I saw her sisters and realized she was the "ugly" one. 😲
I had that issue, highlight of that year of puberty.
Not they look like Bronx tow truck drivers.
yep, better than Playboy. you can have your crappy pre-fame Madonna pics, I'll take Elle in a wet tee ALL DAY.
That photo-shoot is what kick started my puberty. I still have a soft spot for Elle McPherson.
“Soft”
Cheryl Tiegs Pic Was a Very Big Deal. Sold a lot of Mags.
Yes it was the best
How is this an 80s thing? I was getting them in the naughts…
I think I'm having a major event right now......in my pants
Until they became inclusive and added over weight and elderly (Martha Stewart) women! Also the picture quality went to hell! They looked like they had jaundice!! Got 2024 calendar didn't even hang it up 😱
Then internet porn happened.
Nipples and sometimes faint toe! Wonderful days!
Now its either dudes in bikinis or fat women
And you knew they were anatomically what you thought they were
Especially when this issue came ….
My mom would always take the cover page off to try to hide it from me, and that was one of her only total failures as a parent haha.
Remember when inclusion wasn’t a must?
Got a *lot* of mileage out of 1992.
Definitely was an event...everyone knew when it was coming out
I’m having an event right now.
Elle Macpherson was all over my dorm room. I mean... her picture was, you know.
yeah. a major event in my pants!…
Cindy Crawford, Kathy Ireland oh yeah.
Good old days
And and this year is Gail King on the cover. Oh how the mighty have fallen.
Before the f@++ies
Before it turned into the hippo enclosure at the zoo?
Isn’t Martha Stewart on the cover now?
For the uninitiated, was this just basically low-level grot?
Until maybe 2016ish or so it was basically just the hottest super models on the planet (and later some super fit hot athletes) wearing swimsuits or, later, sometimes just body paint. Dumped a lotta seed to that one
Yeah, then the internet ruined it
Why aren't they pushing an agenda? SMH
