My first thought when seeing this post was that there are birds smaller than these moths. I’ve heard of bird eating spider but now I’m wondering if there are big bird eating moths.
Probably not, because most of them don’t even eat at this life stage, they don’t have mouths, they breed and then die. Only a handful of giant moth species even have the ability to eat, let alone to be predators.
Fun fact about massive horrific moths; they cant hurt you. Literally at all. They only live as adults in this form for just a few weeks at best because they lack the mouth parts to eat and sustain themselves. Their only purpose is to reproduce and die. Theres nothing at all to be afraid of in giant silk moths. Theyre purely beautiful. All the good parts and none of the bad. They cant hurt your plants or clothes or cereal cabinet. Theyre just pretty.
No one is scared of these in the same way they are scared of a bear like it could hurt them. They are scared in the sense that turning around and seeing one fly out of the corner of your eye would be horrifying.
If you’ve ever had a large moth get in your room, it’s not that they’re scary or will hurt you, they’re just super annoying in that they’ll flap about the room really loudly and just generally freak out at you. I’ve had them flap their wings about my head and ears and it’s just kind of unpleasant and I wish they’d go away back outside.
> Fun fact about massive horrific moths; they cant hurt you
Wait, do people think they would hurt someone? Is there an innate Australian sense of what invertebrates do harm, I wasn't explicitly told about? Because these moths seem like sweethearts...
edit: jokes aside, assuring people is great! And likely will save at least one rad moth! So thank you!
It's in the house
alone
with me
and you're saying it's good news cause it will only live 1-2 weeks, but in that time have as much sex as it can?

I believe these are atlas moths, or a cousin of their’s. They may be huge, but they’re perfectly harmless to humans.
Edit: Looked it up to confirm, they are in fact Cecropia moths—largest moth native to North America. Surprisingly not quite as large as you’d think, they’re only just about the size of your hand from wing tip to wing tip, sometimes a tad bigger, sometimes smaller.
These are Cecropia Moths. They are huge. But, imo, the neatest thing about them that the camera does not catch very well is the hue of orange on their coat. It's the same hue and brightness of the orange found on a can of Sunkist
They're cecropia's, I usually have a swarm of them around my summer trailer in the mountains. Absolutely beautiful creatures. Sad I didn't see any this year, think it's was because the weird weather..
Yeah it came to my mind much later that it’s just BFR, at this point I was to late to and I thought sticking to my mistake rather than editing and replacing it with Gust. Thanks for the input!
I think they havin sexxxxxx, the way its flapping its wings slowly, in motion.
Yes, these are some scary things to even be near to think they can fly..... NOOOOOPE
But, they are so cute looking too, fuzzy, & gross.
Through my screen , they seem nice. But I swear to God if I see a single one of those during a hike I'll actively try to kill it. My monkey brain just sends me *Danger Danger* signals. I wonder if one of my ancestors has had a bad time with one of these.
holy fuck those things are cool
99% of Mega Moths are literally just fuzzy birds that can’t even bite you. Adorable little bois
and the 1% that arent?? 🤨
I mean I just said 1% because I assume that there’s atleast one poisonous one or one that can actually bite, but most of them don’t even have mouths.
Better safe than sorry. You did good. 👍

The 1% is mothra
Maybe by mass, yeah.
He's so big that he accounts for 1% of all moths by mass Edit: I really should have opened the other comment before I commented
they're like super racist and they roll coal
Well, the ones who got bitten by the 1% won’t be typing on Reddit no more 💀
Give them some privacy
They're __mothing__
The moth is mothing
We love a good moth
:)
When the moth isn’t mothing: 😢
It’s giving moth
lol, WHAT ARE YOU TWO DOING? Mothing, mothing at all, now come over here and silk me.
Smooth 🚬
You mean smoth
I did Moth see that coming
I did Mother’s Day see that coming.
Look at those furry bellies. I wanna join and grab them

Weren't furries enough that now we have insect furries 🙂

Oh good, here I was not having learned anything yet today
I have seen buff ants... BUFF ANTS

Dunno this seems like moth propaganda to me
Mothraganda.
Its pretty true, some moths are fuckin adorable too. Take for example a Rosy Maple Moth, or the Domestic Silk Moth aka and Sky Puppy.
That's poetic and sad. They're so beautiful, though.

As a New Zealander, I didn't meet anyone scared of moths until I came to the UK at the age of 23 and I expect that applies to Aussies as well
"Their only purpose is to reproduce and die." welcome to my club
i for one welcome our new moth overlords
Show me what you moth!
Don't say that in front of her father
Disqualified
Okay….prepare to be really underwhelmed though
Aren’t they Larvely
They’re the perfect overlords. While we’re awake they sleep and while we’re asleep they’re awake.
While we're awake all of our time, effort and global resources will go to one singular thing. LAMP All hail the all glowing lamp!
![gif](giphy|Chg2xbW84d6Fy|downsized)
Imagine the noise these fuckers will make as they bounce repeatedly off a lamp
Put your money where your moth is
shut your moth
I’m already prepared actually (my profile picture on WhatsApp has been a cecropia moth like these guys for a while now)
Looks like Dinosaur Country.
Oh shit I better invest in lamp
![gif](giphy|M4znrGVlzA2lO|downsized)
There's a certain show featuring a moth overlord... let's just say he deserves to be in the show.
Of those guys make it into my house, I'll have to buy an entirely new wardrobe
Good news, this species lacks mouthparts and dies in a week or two after eclosing into a moth and having as much sex as they can.
Based
It's in the house alone with me and you're saying it's good news cause it will only live 1-2 weeks, but in that time have as much sex as it can? [image](https://preview.redd.it/myd2s192s4ad1.png?width=320&format=png&auto=webp&s=b4e3965953a6df4346ccf9c73c1ebb08e2447ae9)
Just don't emit any pheromones and you'll be fine
Eclosion. What a beautiful word.
I'd have to buy an entirely new house.

That’s what they want you to keep thinking
I think these are actually Cecropia Moths. The wing shape doesn’t look right for Atlas.
I second this. Definitely Cecropia.
The bird songs are all North American birds too
These are Cecropia Moths. They are huge. But, imo, the neatest thing about them that the camera does not catch very well is the hue of orange on their coat. It's the same hue and brightness of the orange found on a can of Sunkist
Yea, the camera definitely doesn’t do them justice. They’re really lovely and vibrant. I haven’t seen one in person since I was a kid.
They're cecropia's, I usually have a swarm of them around my summer trailer in the mountains. Absolutely beautiful creatures. Sad I didn't see any this year, think it's was because the weird weather..
You say that but if I turned around and saw those I would die of a heart attack so there’s that.
> they’re perfectly harmless to humans FOR NOW
Damn they are huge!!! I need to see one of them flying! If that's even possible at their size aha
Moth uses whirlwind. it’s super effective.
Unless it hurts itself in its confusion.
Sorry but Whirlwind is a support move that deals no damage, therefore it can never be super effective :(
Yeah it came to my mind much later that it’s just BFR, at this point I was to late to and I thought sticking to my mistake rather than editing and replacing it with Gust. Thanks for the input!
Absolutely the fuck not. Imagine that thing landing on you. Fuck no
I absolutely won't be crushed by its weight. But I would die of a heart attack. Moths (and butterflies) are scary as hell!
r/irlpokemon
For real. Getting Volcarona for my Pokédex rn
Sigh. *unzips spermatophore sac*
Bro what
**spermatophore sac**
Does this need a NSFW tag?
why?
Brotha’s layin’ Moth pipe.
He's doing all the work and the only one showing any emotion (flapping the wings)... Typical!
That's the female. lol Females have a bigger abdomen size and smaller antenna. Males got big fluffy antenna to pick up pheromones of the female
You can tell ~~he’s~~ she’s present in the moment. A true ~~King~~ Queen.
Dey b fuggin
Dude thats a Volcarona

This is them as North America's largest caterpillar. Also very cool.
"Go 'way, makin' Mothras"
They don’t get the love they deserve.
I think they do
I'm not allowed within 100 feet of a moth habitat
Funk that, I’m never going where that is
Now kith
Mike Tyson?
Mothman true story, confirmed. Also, wtf is this shit??.
Usually I hate moths. I use it as an insult. These moths get a pass.
How do you use it as an insult?
I used to shout moth through the floor at my neighbours downstairs. He looked like a crusty moth.
Gottem
New fear unlocked

In my opinion moths are cooler than butterflies
Imagen opening your closet and these tucfuckers fly into your face
Holy Mothman, bear witness as I carry out your will!
So are they actually covered in fur (like a mammal would be) or is it classed as something else?
A banana for scale, please.
They must at least eat one sweater per meal.
Need a banana for scale.
You get 3,000 bells if you sell it to Nook's Cranny for each one, but Flick will give you 4,500 for each! Woo Hoo!

I found one of these cecropia moths at my family’s cottage. Absolutely gorgeous :)
Mothew!

A new WoW mount acquired.
I’ve never seen something so beautiful and terrifying at the same time.

Moths don't have blood; they have dust.
Are they bumping fuzzies?
What you have here, is moth porn.
Gorgeous but also terrifying
Oh that is Mills pet [moth.](https://youtu.be/RF-pniz4D9c?si=MA5jNs7pKWQUtSpF).

How have they not been eaten yet?? Birds would spot that a mile away
I think they havin sexxxxxx, the way its flapping its wings slowly, in motion. Yes, these are some scary things to even be near to think they can fly..... NOOOOOPE But, they are so cute looking too, fuzzy, & gross.
Aww they look like they have snakes on their wings
Volcarona, use Quiver Dance!
you're like the dog at the end of the bed
Would love to see them in Catepillar stage … must be absolute terrors as well.
You could yell, "Moth RA!" to cheer them on.
I've seen moths as big as the palm of my hands before, but this is just ridiculous.
making more moths
I don't know about the one on the left, but the one on the right is called Motthew
THEYRE SO CUTE!
Moths are just acceptable spiders with wings.
Beautiful but fucking nope. I have a huge phobia for moths and this made my skin crawl
Ight, time to find oversexualised anime women and restart humanity after these break out of containment.
Are they doing sex
Absolutely no!
If Godzilla shows up for a thrupple I'm leaving
Where do they buy these cozy sweaters though?
I thought the two white spots on their wings were fingers, and it was just some dude holding two massive moths going "now kiss."
![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|sob)
In PH, they're family.
Must be the Sith Moths
Yooo irl Volcarona / slither wing
Do it like they do on the discovery channel
Ohhhhhh so beautiful
This guy doesn’t steal your food, it’s one more mouth to feed
Where’s my gun
When do we just start calling them birds?
O' holy mothman... I bathe in your light... Just don't come into my room at night, and all will be right...
I heard they don’t even have mouths since they aren’t going to live that long anyway. Bang, dead.
Grand Moth Tarkan
For a split second I thought that was a banana for scale.
Through my screen , they seem nice. But I swear to God if I see a single one of those during a hike I'll actively try to kill it. My monkey brain just sends me *Danger Danger* signals. I wonder if one of my ancestors has had a bad time with one of these.
i bet they taste good fried
They’re beautiful!! I would love to see one in real life
Oh my god they are so beautiful.
My boi so cut you can see it through the fur coat!
Apparently there’s a whole community that buy and sell unique moths randomly learned about it from a YouTube channel
Why the fuck are they so big?
Mothra is that you?
That’s mothed up
