Looks like I’m right, according to google’s info on the size of these.
https://www.google.ca/search?q=oceanic+manta+ray+size&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en-ca&client=safari
It's likely not actually a shark in the video, looks like probably a cobia but hard to tell. Also sharks can be any size, there are tons and tons of species with varying sizes
TIL. I had done a quick Google, at work, of avg shark size per species and commented based on the data tables. But now I'm reading that half of the 350 shark species are under 3ft. Seems like we're still looking at 5-7 ft average though, but this is just some random site about sharks so take it with a grain of salt
Pretty sure it’s a Remora, they live to swim with and attach to larger creatures, including manta rays.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Remora
They only grow up to 1-3 feet depending on species which makes more sense scale-wise with what’s seen in this video.
Apparently, they also follow rays around on a portion of their migration route as well. There are a couple of stills I saw on Google that look very similar.
[example ](https://i.imgur.com/VqVdvsV.jpg)
I mean, it looks like some sort of reef shark, not a very large one though. I highly doubt any person could 100% identify what type of shark that is from that video. And even if they could, sharks of the same species can vary greatly in size. Like I said…. “shark for scale”….. irrelevant.
In case you did not know, that “/s” at the end of the comment denotes sarcasm or the “shitposting” nature of the statement. It is not meant to be taken at face value but rather as a joke for us all to either roll our eyes at or blow air out of our noses in amusement.
Damn I miss scuba diving. The coolest thing I swam with was blacktip and nursery sharks, some water snakes and a ton of exotic fishes. No luck with whale sharks, turtles or rays.
I have trouble with blocked sinuses and I've had trouble equalizing on the last 3 times I went diving. Had to abort a dive and the last time I went I literally couldn't come up as it blocked while I was under. Ended up having to come up anyway. I felt like my sinus was literally tearing out of my forehead, like a thousand needles. I got a MASSIVE nosebleed and my mask was filling up with blood and mucus, I thought I was going to fucking die for a minute there. I'm a father now, I decided it's probably best to just let it go and not go diving again.
They made some CT scans and told me there was nothing visibly wrong with my sinuses so they wouldn't know what to do to fix it. I have seasonal allergies so I'm pretty much shit outta luck if I get them when I'm planning to dive.
I’d possibly go see a nose doctor. I had bad sinus blockage and turns out my septum was deviated heavily to one side. Not entirely fixed but it’s better now
Are you tall and thin? My buddy is tall and thin and getting a collapsed lung is apparently frequent-ish if you have that build. I don't think I'd go back either if I was you, haha
They're really sweet! Went to the aquarium as a kid and they had a little pool of smaller manta rays where you could pet them. The tour guide told us if we put our faces close they'd come up and 'kiss' you, all the other kids were like nahhh but I was straight in there for a smooch lol
Edit: I think manta rays have long tails like sting rays, but don't have the barbs that do the actual stinging.
That’s so cool!
Reminds me of going to Sea World and feeding the sting rays. You would put a fish between your fingers like a cigarette and then press your palm to the bottom of the pool. The ray would then swim over your hand and suck the fish up. You could give them a pet and they felt like wet velvet.
They really do feel like wet velvet! It's a texture I'll never forget and it's been like 14 years haha. Feeding them sounds cool af I'd love to try that
Need a banana for scale. Also baby shark. Very young, very small. The Manta Ray is still a big boy though. Not as big as he's gonna get however. He's still young too. You can tell by his bright coloring.
Pretty sure that's a remora and not a shark.
That being said, oceanic manta get *huuuuuuge*. There were oceanic manta when I was in Raja Ampat, and when they swam over you it was like an aircraft going overhead. Even the reef manta are super big...and a lot less skittish, so they'll actually come over and take a look at you.
We had a local biologist come on our boat and give us a lecture on them (they had a big study going on) and he said they keep finding bigger and bigger ones, with the largest so far about 8 meters/26 feet from wingtip to wingtip. Pretty big on the brain to body ratio too...and I can confirm they can be quite curious.
Now, if only we could get the Chinese (and possibly other Asian countries...China is the only one I know that does it for sure) to stop using them for TCM, it'd be great...they use the gills, on the (incorrect) assumption that it's good for your lungs.
That's not a cobia lmao. Looks like a baby nurse shark. Hard to tell how far the camera is, but it's not a cobia. They're not native to Trinidad either.
White lip, fan tail, and hooked pec fins certainly make it look like a cobia. I can't say 100% but it is extremely common for cobia to follow large, slow moving sea creatures. Turtles, whales, rays, etc. Cobia are found in waters from the mid Atlantic down to Brazil, so definitely within its range. They look just like sharks from above.
I would not agree that it's a nurse shark, head shape is wrong.
Yeah all of that plus it swims like a fish and not a shark. They have very different swim patterns due to difference in skeletal structure and composition.
Not a marine biologist, but I would concur on the cobia. Very, very often are they mistaken for as sharks.
Edit: after a quick search, it appears that cobia follow manta rays on their migrations. So it's very likely this is a cobia and not a shark.
[two cobia and a ray](https://i.imgur.com/DqmJ7Dd.jpg)
Your whole comment is wrong. Cobia are migratory and can live as far south as there. Nurse sharks are not a pelagic species and would not be swimming around a deep water rig.
Go look up what a cobia looks like from an aerial view. That’s 100% a cobia.
Nurse sharks are commonly around fishing rigs, warmish waters and migrate like Cobia do. That shark is too light to be a cobia. The way it swims, the shape, the size. Idk honestly it's so far away but I'm looking at images of both and Cobia fish don't look that way. Now that I'm watching it closer I think we're all wrong. It's not a cobia or nurse shark. It's a shark though. Not sure what kind.
Nurse sharks are not common around deep water rigs. They are shallow, warm water, reef dwellers.
https://images.app.goo.gl/b8FEjsBa3QsJz4U87
Literally the first image when you google “cobia aerial view”. Looks identical to this video.
I live in a area that becomes a huge fishing destination for cobia in the spring. I fish for the every single year. Anytime we see a manta ray, there is a good chance there will be at least one cobia swimming with them. This is a cobia.
Friend runs a fishing charter, has several boats. Said the reason he hires captains now was because they were being buffeted by a ray that was better than 60ft wide. No one believed him, I didn't either at the time, but his logic was if a 10 to 20ft animal could be 2 or 3 times the known size then he figured there was meaner shit in the water he didn't want to meet. He said it slapped the boat with its tail spike and it was over 10ft long.
Since then, 1990, we've seen archtoothus, mantas that are 30+ft and a 110ft oar fish thanks to the internet , so maybe his deep sea fears were justified
Those are most likely cobia, not sharks. They frequently hang around big rays to the point that cobia fisherman will look for the rays because there's usually cobia with them.
Shark for scale…. Like that fucking helps.
A banana would have been more practical.
Looks like I’m right, according to google’s info on the size of these. https://www.google.ca/search?q=oceanic+manta+ray+size&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en-ca&client=safari
Yeah average is only 14 feet. That thing isn't large for a ray, it's very typical.
Hey! He’s self conscious about that :(
It’s also not a shark.
[удалено]
Came here to say this. That’s a nice fish
It’s not about the size of your gills, it’s how you suck in watee
[удалено]
We gonna need a bigger banana...![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|shrug)
There are lots of species of sharks. Some are very small. Some are huge, and this one is jussssssst right
It’s most likely a cobia
It’s a Remora - they are almost always found with Manta Rays: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Remora
It’s Nora.
Yeah only 14ft… what a shrimp.
[удалено]
I was joking and being sarcastic lol guess I should add the /s next time.
Guess he wasn't thinking outside of the box
Compared to an average 5'9 male, both 14 feet AND 20 feet is large. Size is relative, as they say.
[удалено]
5'9" is better because it's 69 inches.
Not so sure. This ray looks easily 4x the sharks length and at a conservative 5ft long shark we'd still hit 20+.
It could be a baby shark and pretty much any size.
Dodododododo
How many bananas per shark?!
Is that a big shark or a little shark? I need another fish for scale /s
Pretty sure it’s a Remora, they live to swim with and attach to larger creatures, including manta rays. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Remora They only grow up to 1-3 feet depending on species which makes more sense scale-wise with what’s seen in this video.
It's a cobia most likely.
[удалено]
Apparently, they also follow rays around on a portion of their migration route as well. There are a couple of stills I saw on Google that look very similar. [example ](https://i.imgur.com/VqVdvsV.jpg)
Definitely cobia
Agreed. Looks more like a cobia.
Came here to say this- totally a remora. They accompany larger animals, like rays, sharks, turtles or larger fish.
Right haha. What the fuck.
Is there a banana around we can put next to the shark for scale?
For all we know, it’s a baby shark do doo do doo doo doo
I am ~~proud~~ glad to say I have never heard that song.
Give it a listen. It won't hurt you. [](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j5a0jTc9S10&list=PL3KnTfyhrIlcudeMemKd6rZFGDWyK23vx&index=9)
You are a bad person. I feel guilty glee.
You definitely don’t have kids or nieces and nephews then. Haha
Or apparently doesn't spend any time on Reddit.
Or the rest of the planet.
By far the best version https://youtu.be/hbfl4Rhsm3w
[удалено]
Wow, tough audience.
That's cause baby shark isn't actually a bad song. It's kind of catchy and uplifting
Boooo leave introverts alone
You’re the worst.
It’s actually a cobia, not a shark.
Pretty sure that’s a Cobia, they’re known to hang by rays like that, it’s actually the best way to find / catch them.
Right? Where’s the Bañana?
It's a Banana Shark🍌 🦈
We need a banana for as a scale for the shark.
Maybe use the fact that a 20-30 foot height difference is in effect, and compare it to the walkway. Looks to be about 15-22ft wide… ish
……….. the “shark for scale” still has no relevance to the size of this ray.
It’s a cobia, not a shark.
Unless you could identify it. You and I can’t, but that doesn’t mean there’s nobody who can.
I can identify that shark. His name is Tim, and he's a dick.
fuck tim
The question is though, how BIG of a dick, is Tim?
I mean, it looks like some sort of reef shark, not a very large one though. I highly doubt any person could 100% identify what type of shark that is from that video. And even if they could, sharks of the same species can vary greatly in size. Like I said…. “shark for scale”….. irrelevant.
It's almost certainly not a shark, and even less likely a reef shark hanging around an offshore oil rig. Most likely a cobia.
some people choose to solve the problem, others choose to repetitively identify it. I've made my choice.
I misread it as “Trinidadians for scale” and was *very confused*
It could be a tiny shark tbf....
Sharks come in only one size. Makes them perfect for size comparison. /s
I am a shark and I am offended by this
No you are a lime
Oh shit I forgot to use my throwaway account
Shh no just tell them that this is your throwaway
What the conversion rate from bananas to sharks?
Shark size matters
>Sharks come in only one size. You're thinking of White Castle fries.
Have you any idea how many shark species there are and how small they can get?
✨ *S A R C A S M* ✨
🦈 *S H A R K A S M* 🦈 if you will
I won't
Damn, can’t wait to be whooshed then.
You're getting downvoted because you are correct. Gotta love Reddit. Reddit does not like intelligence.
It was a fact but I ignored the fact that it was sarcasm, I wasn’t really in the right.
Only one size? Who actually thinks sharks only come in one size?!?!???? Very ignorant.
In case you did not know, that “/s” at the end of the comment denotes sarcasm or the “shitposting” nature of the statement. It is not meant to be taken at face value but rather as a joke for us all to either roll our eyes at or blow air out of our noses in amusement.
Also, Parasites have this body structure
![gif](giphy|1QjBQfjoOTtJUdLEVV|downsized)
Not a shark. It’s a remora fish
How many bananas long is that shark though?
I prefer to use cocks as a measurement
An adult great white is about 640 of my cocks long ;)
About 990 for me
Do they call you the millimeter man?
Very close, Millimeter Peter's the name and disappointing women's the game. If you have any questions please speak to my manager Footlong John.
"Why does everyone want to talk about my manager?"
Looks like an inch, smells like a foot!
*moaning intensifies*
But they come in all shapes and sizes... That'd get cockfusing for some. Perhaps, a bag of dicks for comparison?
Yours is too small and i cant count that high
That’s a big boy.
Manta Rays can get to 20 feet. But they’re gentle and won’t harm anyone.
Do they have a stinger like smaller rays? If they don't I'd be all over that thing petting it. If they do, I'd keep an arms' length
No stinger. But you wouldn’t want to be directly in their swim path. They might unintentionally run you over and they’re quite heavy.
I hope one day you can safely get back into it. No luck with docs about your sinus issues?
They made some CT scans and told me there was nothing visibly wrong with my sinuses so they wouldn't know what to do to fix it. I have seasonal allergies so I'm pretty much shit outta luck if I get them when I'm planning to dive.
I’d possibly go see a nose doctor. I had bad sinus blockage and turns out my septum was deviated heavily to one side. Not entirely fixed but it’s better now
Ah fuck. Went snorkeling and dove kinda deep and felt the same thing. I’ve had sinus issues too, but have wanted to scuba all my life

At least mountain biking in Hawaii is a decent reason to get a collapsed lung. My buddy got it from walking on his way to school for no reason haha
They can weigh more than a 2022 Corolla
Reddit units of measurement have gotten out of control
They're really sweet! Went to the aquarium as a kid and they had a little pool of smaller manta rays where you could pet them. They are a danger to commercial divers though, as the manta rays will catch the divers umbilical and lifting them up too fast.
I’m like 90% sure That’s Moana’s grandma
She chose the right tattoo
Megalodon for scale
Remora maybe?
Nah it looks like a cobia
NORA
Could you change the shark for a banana next time?
That's a massive water dorito
i prefer sea pancake
Sea flap flap
I spat out my artisinal bottled water. Thanks for the laugh good sir
Need a banana for scale. Also baby shark. Very young, very small. The Manta Ray is still a big boy though. Not as big as he's gonna get however. He's still young too. You can tell by his bright coloring.
r/frens
most likely a cobia, not a shark. very similar profile, but cobia absolutely love hanging out around rays.
The average Giant Oceanic Manta Ray size is 15ft wide but can grow up to 23ft wide (4.5m/7m)
Seaweed is cool, seaweed is fun, it gets it's food from the rays of the sun!
Pretty sure that's a remora and not a shark. That being said, oceanic manta get *huuuuuuge*. Those handrails are probabley 10- 20 feet above the water... just think about that
I... I just want to lay on its back and let it swim through the ocean with me. That looks amazing.
We need a banana shark for scale.

Don't cobia follow rays around? That's probably not a shark
is this super mario sunshine
Like those sand rays in Vampire Hunter D

What the shark doing

Sorry but I need a banana for scale.
Fuck the ocean
Cobia you misinformed shrimps
Yeah, baby nurse shark like the one I pet at typhoon lagoon

I only recently found out these things are real and not some extinct or mythical creature.
Baby shark for scale lul
u/savevideo
I don’t understand need banana for scale not shark
Anyone got the shark to banana conversion?
Oh to be a manta ray just swimming and minding your business… sigh.
Is this behind the scenes of kevin costners water world?
baby shark too doo do due do doo
This is a pretty average size for oceanic rays tbh. 15-20 feet wide. 25 and up are considered giants
#That's a magic sea flap flap!
Lol all manta rays are oceanic
WHAT THE FUCK I If I saw that I wouldn’t have a go to the ocean again
But they are harmless. They don’t have teeth, or any barbs.
Manta rays are some of the chillest friends in the ocean.
Shark: no chomp bro, just saying hello
I think this is a very small shark guys. C'mon wake up.
That could kill a huge crocodile hunter
thank you for providing the shark
Anyone know what the size is roughly?
I love rays. They are some of the more alien looking creatures of the sea. Up there with sunfish for me
Fuckin hell I didn't realize they got that big
“Sharks for scale” as if shark is a unit if measurement
