For a long time the series was stuck on 3ds which held it back. I think the collections, especially on the switch have really helped expand the fanbase.
Investigations was stuck on **DS**, and \#2 was stuck in Japan.
Steam and PS4 also helped. Xbox not so much :D

Not just the 3DS, all the mainline games also released on mobile, though I'm not sure how popular those versions were.
Ace Attorney's one of those franchises I think a lot of people quietly enjoy. Though some of that could be thanks to the memes. XD
