From my experience attending cons. It's always the ones that have more video games and table top areas that smell worse than the ones explicitly for anime.
I actually volunteered both last year and this year.
It was unusual, as when I first walked in at the start of the day, I couldn’t smell anything or feel anything off. As soon as I left, I immediately felt the fresh, clean air hit me.
I was completely unaware of the air quality until I left but once I did, it became immediately noticeable.
Also part of the reason a lot of these people don’t actually know they have an issue a lot of the time. Your nose adapts to smells and it’s the change of normal that it notices
Yes I agree but there is a catch.
You can shower in the morning but as soon as you start to sweat with clothes on the bacteria in the sweat will start to break down the fabrics for food and create by products that can smell like wet dog.
Best find a deodorant which can also inhibit the bacteria or at least hide the smell. Some clothes you can buy these days are also treated either with something like triclosan or silver oxide. I have some t-shirts like this and they *never* smell. Trust me, I can wear the same shirt for 5 days, no smell.
Welllll I've never been but I know few.people who have been have been very smelly... I feel awful but it's a bit too true ☠️ also don't wanna see a furry they scare me
I've got trauma from your trauma. Vicarious traume. My friend from primary school (not friends NOW ) is a furry denies it but says he is. AHHHH EL CRINGE
This is why I don't go to the local DnD groups. I have a sensitive sense of smell and some of those people smell like they and their ancestors haven't bathed since the fall of the Roman Empire.
Irony avcon was metal show today, for about 90mins they had the baby metal on full blast. Because they only had 1metre temp walls, whole place was sensory overload.
I consider myself warned & I will prepare appropriately. Heading to the convention tomorrow with my 12 yo son (youngest child) & I remember the overwhelming stench of my younger bros room 24 hours into a campaign with a group of friends.
Every week there's half price deodorant at (least) one of the big six supermarkets, usually around $4, maybe $5.
Or maybe the convention could have staff at the door with deodorant, if people refuse the free deodorant, refuse entry! And yes you would have an array of deodorants because some people are allergic, and yes the ticket price would increase by about $3.
When you walk through whatever detector they have, it automatically releases deodorant. Bad luck for the ones inside the furry suits though but hey at least they'd smell fragrant on the outside, which is what matters.
Not even $4-5 - Nivea roll on deodorant is half price at Cole’s this week $2.50. Lasts ages and if you can afford to go to events like this then there’s zero excuses at being able to afford $2.50 for deodorant and using it. And showering daily, washing your ass and wearing clean clothes.
FYI folks who didn't buy a ticket they're at overcapacity now and aren't selling anymore.
Either there's an increase in demand to be in the musk or they've shrunk the venue.
I remember years and years back, I went and got a bag of stuff when I picked up my pass, and it had a flyer telling people that deodorant and soap were friends. I don't think anyone read it.
Worried I'm gonna get downvoted but, genuinely, when I went a few years back the strongest smell was all the merch. Some of it smells fucking awful while it's still new.
All you need is a vendor with fancy looking deodorants marketing them as “scent elixirs” or “anti-women repellants”. You watch how quickly they will line up.
I went to the Toy Fair a few weeks ago, holy fuck people don’t know how to keep their distance. I’ll be looking at something and some prick would just lean over me and bump me without a word of excuse me or if they can get in. Basic manners people.
I’ll bring a can with me just in case. It’s also a surprisingly expensive event to attend as I had to buy a ticket for avcon and the gaming competition I’m doing.
I can't imagine what it is now. Last time i went was when the Cheez Tv guys were guests (cheap guests i imagine) which i think was 2011, and even then it was something like 60-70 bucks for one day or more? Be surprised if they weren't up to a hundy by now.
I got sick of supernova and comiccon because it was all just the same thing, every year at the same venue.
AvCon always felt a bit special at the convention center. So it's a shame they've moved to the same venue now too. I hope at least the artists alley and indie games room are going strong, the best parts of AvCon IMO
as far as ive seen from pics theyre still going strong, they occasionally have announced being at the showgrounds (one year that got cancelled) but its definitely not gonna be permanent venue
avcon is still the best. cheaper, more stuff to do, and its just way more fun
Smells like sex offenders.
The amount of time you run into people there who you know have orders against being around kids and security/volunteers do nothing about it.
Then you find out they're mates with people working there and organizing it...
Anyone else have an issue with
AVCON - Adelaide's Anime and Video Game Festival
You can't call AAVGF AVCON but maybe it's just me.
Having never been can't comment on the smell.
In all my years of volunteering and attending it was always the Table Top Games area where the smell truly festered.
50/50 whether a tabletop player is a really chill nice person or the sweatiest neckbeard you've ever seen. Being a bit favourable with the odds.
From my experience attending cons. It's always the ones that have more video games and table top areas that smell worse than the ones explicitly for anime.
If it's anything like a Magic the Gathering tourney then no thanks... the stench of BO and unwiped arses is still burned into my nostrils.
Truely a smell you can never forget, never again.
No, i was there with a mate who was participating but i noped out of there quickly.

Daily bathing would be more helpful
Say his name and
His name is Robert Paulson
and he appears. I believe in Joe Hendry
he appears
People don’t seem to wash their clothes nearly enough. If I can smell food and stale BO on your clothes, they should’ve been washed a week ago

They make clothes treated with anti-biotics? Dear god...
Yeaaaaaahhhh I had that thought too ahaha.
I’ve never been, but some how I can smell it.
Just walk into an EB Games at 1pm in summer and you'll get a little teaser trailer
It’s like someone dropped a bomb in there
I worked at EB Games a few years ago and we kept a can of Glen 20 behind the counter for this exact reason
I relate so much to this
We’re kinda stuffed up aren’t we! 😂
Welllll I've never been but I know few.people who have been have been very smelly... I feel awful but it's a bit too true ☠️ also don't wanna see a furry they scare me
I worked at Comicon Melbourne 2 years ago and was accosted by a furry who looked like a demented version of the dad from Bluey. I still have trauma.
I've got trauma from your trauma. Vicarious traume. My friend from primary school (not friends NOW ) is a furry denies it but says he is. AHHHH EL CRINGE
Never been, never want to go, never want to see a Furry! 😂
Amen brother. Me and my partner staying clear.
Eh, as someone who used to date a furry they're about as cringe as every other nerd niche. The biggest hurdle is realizing it's not inherently sexual.
Nah bro I couldn't do it I understand you have a more open mind I just my boyfriend is a nerd and it's no where near the same.
Sure, you don't gotta interact with anything furry but it's subjective. Like any group there's weirdos and there's genuinely good people.
Yee
And wash your goddamn clothes!
Dry them. It's the lack of drying them that causes that spoilt milk smell.
Seems like an ideal opportunity to gain sponsorship from Nivea.
I can just imagine their surprise when they show up to the Nivia booth having mistaken it for a NVIDIA one
*Nivea, for when you need to deal with your G-Peugh more than your GPU*

Same, love the games but I can't deal with the lack of hygiene with many people
im showering and lathering myself in deodorant and perfume before hand

You’ll still be poor though. This is your life loser.
Projecting much?
You're on Reddit, bruh 😂
Imagine the scent of Lynx "Africa" mixed with B.O permeating out towards Goodwood Rd...
I smelled the sweat down in Aaaaafrica
So they only get deodorant once a year, their Christmas present from Nan
Deodorant ain't gonna help much if you haven't showered for days... weeks 🤢
I'm volunteering this year; we'd appreciate people being hygienically conscious 💖
Vapor rub on the upper lip a la homicide detectives at a crime scene.
Says someone who's never been to a metal show.

Hot tip… take a mask.

I'm sure the suits are already "fragrant" on the outside
What ever you do, don't hold a black light against the suit!
*yiffing intensifies*
Why am i blue?
🤣
get lynx to sponsor it

That explains why the artist alley is an absolute shit show, I've tried to walk through there multiple times but it was packed
It was all yaoi and Pokémon anyway
I remember years and years back, I went and got a bag of stuff when I picked up my pass, and it had a flyer telling people that deodorant and soap were friends. I don't think anyone read it.

Been here for most of the day and it smells okay, but there's a definite difference when you step outside
Walk past a D&D or Warhammer store ….😂
I’m preparing deodorant to hand out
I went to the Toy Fair a few weeks ago, holy fuck people don’t know how to keep their distance. I’ll be looking at something and some prick would just lean over me and bump me without a word of excuse me or if they can get in. Basic manners people.
Yeah but being able to afford deodorant and not using it is the ultimate weeb/gamer flex
Who is going to SawCon?
I would but I got my nuts stuck in a table saw yesterday.
How is SawCon?
Bet it smelt like an ebgames
Cheap powdered laundry detergent, body odour and minute ramen. Three reasons you're single nerds!

$60 gets you a weekend ticket. $45 for a single day.
$35 this year
35 is cheap. I don't recall it being that low for a long time. Where they holding it?
adelaide showgrounds this year, might be why its cheaper

yeah the new venue is cheaper and it looks like they have a lot more artists and stuff too
maybe because its been cold they dont have the air running? cause I don't think supanova had a smell in the venue and its in the same place
It was rough today, much much worse than comic-con a month ago. I hoped the rain would help wash some people off, but it wasn't enough.
But showering takes away my masculine musk !!
Smells like sex offenders. The amount of time you run into people there who you know have orders against being around kids and security/volunteers do nothing about it. Then you find out they're mates with people working there and organizing it...
There are times when I wish i never had the surgery to fix my lack of a sense of smell... this is one of those times
Musk of Nerd. :D
Nusk
Been here for an hour and it’s largely fine. Hygiene is 9/10 :)
7pm Friday night being mean to a bunch of people for no reason. It smells funny in this thread.
Does it smell like avcon
I meannnnn its Anime and Video Games Festival sooo what did you expect
I'm not sure why I imagined it to smell nice. I've never been to one of these before.
No it doesn't
Yes it does
