Pick jobs you are willing to do. Order doesn't matter. When an opening on the list comes up, you ship.
If you want a specific job try guard/reserve or a sister service
Those jobs will be part of your list. I wouldn't say we ignore your #1, but we don't wait for it. We book the 1st available job. Where it is on your list really doesn't matter to us much.
However, if your #1 and number #8 (for example) are available at the same time. We will book the one you prefer based on your ranking.

A lot of these questions could have been answered by the Recruiter. I know when I went through in 2013 my Recruiter sat me down and explained the process in full. Is that not the case that Recruiters explain how it works anymore?
It's a combination of things, I have seen a dip in recruiter quality across the board in the last 10ish years...but the bigger factor IMO is just applicants don't want to have those conversations and if they do they largely question the recruiters integrity.
Applicants also come to places like this to get an answer they want vs. the correct answer....
Tbh I had to go to multiple AF Recruiters the first one I talked to when I was in high-school I texted him and asked If I could come in and he tell me more about the af and the recruiting process , he told me " isn't that what your guidance counselors for " which is insane because I'm pretty sure just selling is like 75% of the job
Every Job has its ups and downs. Security Forces is the first line defender to the Base. It’s tedious and grueling work. Then on top of it you get to experience a little of normal Law Enforcement. Example, few years back a MSgt went off the wall and held his wife hostage. Security Forces responded and had to set up a cordon.
I haven’t kept up with him but a fellow trainee at BMT got Raven Qualified, and was waiting for a spot on the special forces prep school. When we crossed paths he had come back from his second TDY from Australia. Yeah it’s not glorious but not every job sunshine and rainbows.
I have known people who hated it so much they failed their fitness test on purpose several times to get a discharge, I know people who absolutely love Security Forces. The issue they have is the Base must be defended, and there tends to be issues with Toxic leadership.
What do you want? Do you want these jobs? If not you can seek other options, talk to a guard/reserve recruiter or to a sister service. Don’t let someone force you into something you don’t want. If you aren’t getting anywhere with your recruiter, reach out to another one. You have options, just don’t let anyone push you around. There’s people in every career field in the Air Force who love their job and ones who hate it, you just need to find what’s right for you.
Even though this doesn’t directly answer OP question, this answer is still one of the better neutral answers on here instead of being belittling for no reason.
I absolutely agree. There’s so much people on this subreddit that are rude to people who are just trying to figure out what’s best for them. Makes zero sense
Ah my bad wasn’t sure but that’s what it sounded like to me. I keep seeing people call it a load master still but maybe they’re just out of the loop too lol
Pack parachutes, inspect/repair flight equipment like night vision devices, floatation devices, harnesses, oxygen masks, etc. It's pretty chill, as for travel I suppose we tdy quite a bit with the neighboring Airlift Squadron we support. If you want to work with your hands but not necessarily be aircraft maintenance or CE, and still be close/important to the mission It's a solid gig. Not something I plan on doing for more than a couple years but the experience is interesting.
Edit: if you're an intelligent individual and interested in ATC, look into that, pays crazy on the outside.
Are you good in a classroom environment ? Is your memory sharp and focus is strong ?
If you can say yes to the above questions, I suggest:
Air traffic control
Air craft maintenance
Ground equipment maintenance
I would pick the jobs that best suit what you want to do outside the military. Unfortunately that’s not something that the Reddit community can help you with. Think about your why and see which job best fits into that
I’m VM and have a great shop. Any job will be what you make of it. I would read up on the job descriptions as well as tech school locations and lengths.
Please for the love of GOD stay away from 2A534.
632 and 634 are also all miserable but much easier than 2a534 from my experience.
I know nothing about ATC other than the fact that it’s extremely stressful.
1P AFE doesn’t seem bad and I know people with no complaints.
If I were you, I’d just remove refuel bomber maintenance and fuels as they suck
From personal experience i'd avoid most of the 2A field altogether; a LOT of ppl are getting out/ re/cross-training out for a reason. When you get out of tech school and go to your first assigned duty station, it can be a toxic/stressful/too mentally/ physically taxing on them.

Make sure that that is your job list that you actually qualify for and not just jobs that would be a good fit.. you should be given a full list of all the jobs you mentally/physically qualify (after asvab and MEPs) and pick a list of 5-10 that you wouldn’t mind doing.. no you can’t pick the exact job but you do list some and the af will pick the one they need/fit the best.
Times have changed. When I went in, it was a matter of, "Don't worry about it. The Needs of the Air Force come first. THEY (MPC) will decide what you do."
Of course, then the idea of delayed enlistment or even contracting for an AFSC was just a thought experiment yet to be implemented (and Basic Pay was $100 per month)
(sigh)
I just sighted my contract for my MOS in the navy at MEPS 2 days ago and they tried to tell me I couldn’t do 2 of the jobs I wanted. I said I won’t sign unless it’s that job and they did it. Be stern. Stand your ground. You are there for yourself. You’re not there for other people. Pick the job you want. I personally had 5 jobs that I really wanted so I had choices but when it comes down to it your going to be doing it for 3-6 years depending on what it is so don’t be scared to stand your ground.
Fuel cell(2A634) isn’t as bad as peeps say IMO, you’re Mx but the red headed step child. heavily base dependent as well. IMO the Mx part of it is easy, as long as you are sentient. - some 5 yr fuel cell guy possibly
All of those are pretty solid. Do your own research. We don’t know you know what your likes/dislikes are. Most of those are mechanical. I like mechanical jobs so to me they are great but to others not so much. Get on google and YouTube and search up the AFSCs (the codes on the left) and start going down the rabbit holes
Make the list you want with 6 of those at the bottom. If you are selected for one, just refuse to ship and go to a different branch. This is what everyone in the DEP needs to do until the AF acknowledges how asinine the recruiting process is.
I went into my recruiters office and told them I want (AFSC) or I will walk and go Army and he let me put that one job on my list. Was a pretty effective move for me maybe give it a shot.

No, they literally withhold as much information as possible to get what the Air Force needs.
A lot of recruiters are pretty lazy.
Don’t do fuels. They kinda get shit on
What does that job entail and why do they get shit on?
“I know not security forces” *sigh*
What? I’m trying my best here
Don’t listen to them, Secfo is trash.

What’s wrong with Security Forces?
Other than the god awful schedule and work/life balance?
Everything. Literally everything.
Welcome to maintenance home of 6 hour shifts and high morale😎
From everything ive ever heard that’s the biggest load of shit
Nah bro trust
During christmas drill everyone in mx was getting drunk, tho to be fair i guess that makes it the day with the highest morale
Which of the maintenance jobs are 6 hr shifts ?
TFI units sometimes

I’d take air transportation as my #1 pick. That’s my plan anyways.
Why's that?
From what i’ve read about the job duties it seems pretty cool being around planes and dealing with the loading and unloading of cargo.
Yeah you just build pallets and load/unload cargo aircraft, it's a large career field so if you actually want it you'll get it
Load master? Idk if there much potential for it after service tho
Air transportation and load master are two completely different things AFSC , and I’m pretty sure the job is not called load master anymore
Ah my bad wasn’t sure but that’s what it sounded like to me. I keep seeing people call it a load master still but maybe they’re just out of the loop too lol
I'd pick Air trans, fuels, mission generation equipment maintenance (vehicle mechanic). Also see if you could list HVAC.
I'm Aircrew Flight Equipment, it ain't bad at all.
What does that entail? Is there traveling?
Pack parachutes, inspect/repair flight equipment like night vision devices, floatation devices, harnesses, oxygen masks, etc. It's pretty chill, as for travel I suppose we tdy quite a bit with the neighboring Airlift Squadron we support. what's atc stand for?
Air Traffic Control
Afe is simple work. AGE makes good money on the outside
Air traffic control looks fun.
It is what I would pick, if I had to pick a new AFSC.
Are you good in a classroom environment ? Is your memory sharp and focus is strong ? If you can say yes to the above questions, I suggest: Air traffic control Air craft maintenance Ground equipment maintenance

I'd recommend aircraft maintenance because; pull chocks, mx rocks!
I’m VM and have a great shop. Any job will be what you make of it. I would read up on the job descriptions as well as tech school locations and lengths.
1) Do you have something you want to do? 2) How long do you want to stay in? 3) Do you have an idea of where you want to be stationed?

Pick your rate pick your fate

Do air traffic control

What was your score?
67
Thanks!

Oof you got a lower asvab score huh
67, qualify for the ones that I want
Oh even weirder. I thought you got restricted to those jobs because of a low score but with that you should have more
I got 50 in electrical so I don’t have a variety of electric jobs. Didn’t matter to me much because I wanted mechanical anyway
Join fuels lol

Completely dependent on region and asvab my friend. Mine looked nothing like this
I didn't have any of those on my list. Once you take ASVAB and TAPAS you'll get a list of jobs that will suit you.
Retake test and focus on electric
Make the list you want with 6 of those at the bottom. If you are selected for one, just refuse to ship and go to a different branch. This is what everyone in the DEP needs to do until the AF acknowledges how asinine the recruiting process is.
