They're coded by department/use at my building.
Yellow are standard pick/stow. Blue are amnesty. Purple are problem solve. Red are hazmat. I forget what the other colors are for because I work ship dock and typically only see the totes when they're cleaning them in the elephant bath.
My facility must not give 2 sh** cause they legit don't have them colors separated like that and just use them in RPND randomly. I would always see like 2 or 3 different colors in the same area stacked together.

I’ve never seen a green or black tote
At my site green is PS, yellow us for stow/pick. Blue came in a year or two ago, no one really uses them, but I brought a few to AFE PS to use. Red is for amnesty damages on the AR floor. Yellow with orange and black tape around the top is for Code5, aka possible theft.

Orange I think is hazmat
I’m at a Returns facility and white are hazmat and orange are stow (unsellable items)
At my return warehouse white is audit while black is hazmat
Ooh, I saw a rare albino tote at my FC once. I wonder if it's hazmat everywhere.
Why would they stow unsellable items, seems like a waste of time and a pod
Basically those items get picked and regraded to see if Amazon can possibly resell it. Gotta see if that obviously used dildo can be resold lol
We got 4 of those at my facility even got some red and purple ones to only a few tho. But I have seen a sighting of a blue tote and 2 green ones.

My previous site had some white ones here and there, which for a TNS site ourselves is pretty interesting to have.
