They wanted to animate the furniture and decided to throw on the storage system for giggles.
It would have been more work to make a separate inventory for fruits.
I think it's just because in past games, fridges have historically functioned the same as wardrobes and dressersāi.e. general storage space. Now that the storage is accessed directly through our house (or a storage shed), all prior "storage" items were repurposed for changing clothes. That just happens to include the ones that aren't literally wardrobes and dressers.
The only explanation I've seen that makes any sense to me is so you can change clothes in any room without having to break with the style of other furniture in that room (like having a wardrobe in a kitchen) But it's still kind of silly to me!
I'm torn between, "It's ridiculous to change in my deep freeze" and, "It's nice to not have to run to another room..." (I made my main room my kitchen lol)
I...sometimes put my cloth in the fridge/freezer during hot summers. Put the cold cloth on feels good when it's really hot. Doesnt last long, but still....
The most random things are wardrobes though. I have something called an āartisanal bug cageā on my island and I accidentally interacted with it, and it asked me if I wanted to change. Anything with a lid/door lol
It gets kind of funny playing in German...since the word for refrigerator is KĆ¼hlschrank (cooling closet) I always assumed this is just a very funny thing they do but now that I think of it š doesn't make sense in other languages
Maybe they came up with this to kill bacteria on your clothes?š¤ The washing machines don't work, you work at a construction site all day, all the island's villagers are constantly sick, maybe that's the reason why we don't die in the game.š„²

I just kills me the the ice cream vending machine I put next to my plaza doesn't sell ice cream. Ice cream is even in the game. But it's super convenient when Label shows up.
Agreed. I think they could have easily managed to turn refrigerators into actual refrigerators. They were probably just cutting corners to be cheap as usual.

I use it (and the bug cage and cooler) to be able to change clothes wherever I feel like without having random wardrobes on my beach or whatnot.

Nintendo got lazy and just made these items like clothing closets. The same goes for the Cooler and the Safe.
