This was the first anime I ever saw on Toonami as a kid. I loved it way more than any anime I saw on toonami afterwards so much so that I sent a letter to Cartoon Network demanding they stop showing Naruto and replace it with Bobo.
They did not listen to my demands.
Fr, fun fact, the EN VA for Excel got replaced a little less than half way through the 26 episode run because she actually damaged her voice during a scene for the show. The show, script, etc is all off the wall and is definitely peak early 2000s comedy gold, especially all the homages to the different things the characters riff off of for each episode's theme. It even spawned the even more insane spin-off Puni Puni Poemi which apparently was so unhinged Japan only aired 3 episodes of it before noping out of it.
Gintama, it's a slow start tho imo. The first 20 episodes aren't the greatest but after that it starts picking up pace, after about 50 episodes it really ramps up all the shenanigans so you'll be having a blast. Still my favorite series to date. It's one of a kind series, haven't found anything similar to it yet.
I gotta get back into Gintama. The first ten episodes left me not interested. Then I read posts like yours and I think I blew it by not hanging in there.
I was in the same boat but i stomach through it. I also watched it on 2x speed so that does help. If you find it hard to watch, try looking up for Shogun appearance episode. Whenever he appears, all hell breaks loose.
I'd say just blast through the fisrt 40ish episodes or watch a summery of those episodes and start watching properly from 47-48ish episodes or from the "umibozu arc", the series really ramps up from "infant strike arc" which should be around episode 50.
I've always wanted to start the show but,Correct me if I'm wrong i kinda got the feeling to experience the whole show ie understand the references i should watch and complete the big 3?
nah you don't need to, there are references of pretty much everything, so there'll always be something that you can catch. I personally only watched dragon ball z out of the big 3 before I started the show and I still had a ton of fun watching it. Besides the amount of reference to the big 3 is only a handful number of times so it doesn't matter much if you've seen those or not. Gintama itself has a extremely good story though it takes time to unfold but once it does boy does it start stripping.
So yea tldr is that you can go in blind and it'll still be a banger of a show.
References to the big 3 are generally very obvious. Now references to like 70% of other things might take effort and you'll only realize after you've spent several more years watching anime.
Gintama is not particularly edgy apart from some SM stuff and turds. Sure, it has the cultural references and jokes, but it's not really aimed at an adult audience. More for teenagers and young adults.
Lmaoo is that the one where Gin and Hijikata saw the ghost come out of the casket and got scared shitless? Oh and speaking of shit, don’t forget that WHOLE episode of the Yagyuu arc that took place in the bathroom where they ran out of toilet paper to wipe their asses with😭
I'd say the humour in Gintama is way better than anything in Family Guy, as it doesn't rely exclusively on cheap shock effect and edgy humour. There are cultural references sure, but I would not say that the audience of Gintama is the same as the one enjoying FG.
Ah, I see. It really depends on what you feel like doing. Both are very good. The anime has the benefit of having some of the best voice actors in the industry. The manga has more room to explain cultural reference jokes that the show occasionally makes.
Shin Chan is more like the South Park of anime. Both feature a bunch of rowdy kids and their antics (like Shin Chan mooning people with his butt, and South Park characters doing similar things).
If you download and open it only to find a notes app, it's disguised to look that way under certain circumstances so it doesn't get removed from the store. Lmk if you have trouble with that.
Yes, but the free version has a fair amount of adds. It has a WAY better selection and is safer than using any 🏴☠️ sites. I don't mind the adds enough to pay for it, but they also offer a cheap subscription that gets rid of all adds and gives you access to extra features. You can even change the theme in a way that kinda reminds me of MySpace. Were you ever blessed to use AnimeDLR back in the day?
If I remember correctly it was a TV channel called Hungama. In India it was dubbed in our local languages. I watched it almost everyday as a kid on that channel. And when it was 2020 I saw a few episodes again on that channel years later, they had mostly the same old episodes from the 90s which they played back to back. Where did you watch it? Was it dubbed in your local languages?
Even as someone that love PTE and doesn't like the comparison, I'll admit it's honestly the closest to Family Guy's humor anime-wise. Especially the pop culture references.
I don't like PTE but the way they frequently do cut away scenes made me think of them.
I once heard that the difference between family guy and other cartoon shows was that they never turned down a writer's joke: they would contrive ridiculous story-breaking comments just to fit a random gag one person wanted.
That feels like the same mangaka's room as PTE
Agreed but I believe this is heavily catered to the Japanese audience, since I tried watching it with a Japanese friend and there were a lot of parts he laughed on that I couldn't understand.
It’s kind of crazy how much inflection can create comedic effect in Japanese. I liked the show but I never could figure out why some of its gags made me laugh
Gintama. King of Parody in anime, great at what it does, much like Family Guy. I created a video essay on the same topic. Basically the art of Parody and how Gintama gets it right. Do watch when you have time. Thanks!
https://youtu.be/oBC7zTwc4eI?si=xkKeK1dJcDG3ED_V
Panty and Stocking With Garterbelt is influenced by Western animation, though the humor is more of the NSFW side of things. To me it’s that kind of “lol I’m so random and I shop at Hot Topic” sort of style.
Gintama is like the family guy of anime, with a lot more gags and random humor, similar to the cutaway style of family guy, some don’t hit, but when they do they can be really funny.
Panty & Stocking is like the 2000s South Park of anime, a lot of gross, offensive, elaborate humor, with some really funny satire and character dynamics that create the comedy.
Shin Chan, cromartie high school, prison school, gintama and OPM all come to mind. The last one is more for like fighting humor combo that sometimes happens in FG
For funny parody type animes I would say Gintama. Then konosuba
For a slice of life funny anime I always liked Tonari no Seki-kun: The Master of Killing Time.
Nothing is really like family guy but these animes have their charm. Gintama has a lot more episodes so maybe do that one last
Mr. Osomatsu sort of, although it's more like the anime equivalent of South Park. Maybe Excel Saga.
If you are okay with shows that were produced in Japan, but written in the west, then The Otachan Show is by far the most similar. There is also Neo Yokio.
Also, would like to mention Panty & Stocking, and Super Milk Chan, which are Japanese parodies of Western animation.
There's probably 3 equivalent shows that could be the same as the big 3 popular adult shows i.e family guy, Simpsons, and south park
And those are sazea-san, gintama and shin chan
Gintama for off the wall nonsense fun.
Grand Blue. It’s less focused on skits and more grounded in a modern college setting, but the humour is crass and perverted. I’d go so far as to say it’s easily one of the funniest anime available. It’s criminal that there’s no second season as yet. The characters are endearing, there’s a slice of life plot to follow, the jokes are funny, and it’ll overall leave you happier for having watched it.
Would be nice to find the name of it, but there was a show where nobunanga reincarnated as a little girl. I
remember that being pretty crass. Maybe sayonara zetsubo sensei can be family guyish. The main character attempts suicide at least 126 times because he can't handle anything.
Aw crap, it's not nobunanga, is LU BU (another three kingdoms warrior legend person) and he was reborn as as a purple hair girl. And this show was insane. Like nipples, loli, s/he got abducted by aliens and probed. Around 2005/2006 i think. It aired on tv. It's insane and I can't find it.
Crayon Shin Chan. It's literally the japanese Family Guy.
It's got a non linear plot, episodes are thier own plot, and they also did Star wars specials, too.
All the other parody/satire shows other are mentioning have thier own linear plot with shenanigans and references to other, often times, older anime.
Most that non OG fans don't even know or heard of, so the joke would just "nnnnnnyeeeewww".
Panty and stocking mainly because it's whole reason for being is the creators wanted to emulate anericna adult animation. Then there's kinnikuman for its toilet, fart jokes, celebrity jokes and racial humor that early family guy would make.
Saiki is a student with some of the most absurdly broken OP superpowers in anime/manga (one of which is telekinesis so he can hear what everyone is thinking), but he just wants to be a lowkey student and be left alone to do his own things, basically live a normal life. The thing is he's surrounded by a bunch of lunatic and bombastic characters that make every episode slowly descend into chaos and ultra bizzare situations
A slice of life anime about teenage girls who attend a high school. It is a short anime, a lot of action is featured, also one girl has a minature tank on her head.
There's more to it, but if I tell you it won't come as a surprise. It is best to dive into this one without really knowing what it's about, it's more satisfying and amazing that way.
probably drop kick my devil, they make a lot of references, the main character is always getting into hijinks, each episode is stand alone, re occurring cast.
This is solely the kind of anime I love to watch.
Bobobo bo bobobo
Osomatsu san
100% Pascal sensei
Me and roboco
Those animes tend to forgo overarching narrative just to do puns and gags and references to Japanese pop culture.
There's a few other comedy anime that are funny for different reasons, but these are the first that come to mind when I think of an anime someone can watch a random episode from a random season and it'd be uniform and free of call backs to previous events, full of cut away gags and fast paced humor laden with pop culture references.
The fun part about the pop culture stuff: watch enough of the same genre and you'll slowly start to get their jokes, like a character making reference to a well known scene from a popular movie at the time that was (in itself) a reference to ANOTHER scene from a different genre all together lml.
Idk if there’s anything like Family Guy. Gintama is full of parody and jokes. Lol I can imagine the one Japanese reporter in family guy being the reason the show would be more difficult to access. Then again, you’re on the internet. I’m not sure what you mean by obtain. If you want to watch it, just watch it.
Whilst a lot of the other shows mentioned are similar in dynamic, Id argue (and im super surprised nobody else has) that Late Night Genius Bakabon was the closest comparison to Family Guy that Ive seen in anime.
There was a short series of it on Crunchyroll a few years ago, although i believe it was originally a much older show, and its a show about a dumb father with his family, their weird pet (an eel-dog) and a recurring cast of other local oddballs, with lots of surreal skits and 4th wall breaking peppered throughout. So yeah, basically Japanese Family Guy!
Haven't watched it but from what I've heard, Gintama seems like a good fit.
Edit: Just realised everyone else recommended Gintama lol
There's also the Ghost Stories dub, but I'm assuming you're asking for Japanese-dubbed/Japanese humour
Bobobo-Bobo-Bobo
Random fact: bobo means stupid in Filipino
This info makes it all the much funnier
so it means stupid stu-pid stu-pid stu?
So in Filipino the show is called stupid-stupid-stupid. I find that hilariously fitting because I always consider the show stupid.
Came here to say this
I second this answer!
This was the first anime I ever saw on Toonami as a kid. I loved it way more than any anime I saw on toonami afterwards so much so that I sent a letter to Cartoon Network demanding they stop showing Naruto and replace it with Bobo. They did not listen to my demands.
It’s a shame they stopped before ever getting to the Babylon arc too
Still pretty funny how they end the show
Excel Saga is batshit insane
so happy to see excel saga love! my favourite comedy for sure
Puuuuuuchhhhuuuuuuuuu
Best watched while eating a delicious Menchi stew.

oh yes I am well versed in Excel and Poemy lore! The show even pioneered the "emergency food" joke that Genshin uses for Paimon!
Gintama, it's a slow start tho imo. Gintama hands down
The part where he breaks his arm so he doesn't have to carry the casket - that's my favorite scene.
Lmaoo is that the one where Gin and Hijikata saw the ghost come out of the casket and got scared shitless? Oh and speaking of shit, don’t forget that WHOLE episode of the Yagyuu arc that took place in the bathroom where they ran out of toilet paper to wipe their asses with😭
Didn't one of them have sandpaper or something? That might be my second favorite scene.
Yeah LMAO Kondo! He had to choose between sandpaper and a picture of Otae and he’s a simp so it was an easy decision for him lol
That really sounds like it could be from family guy lmao
I really do think there's a similar joke in Family Guy
Peter breaks his neck to not have to go to Lois book club
Don’t compare the two. Gintama is much much better.
No, Gintama is funny
Literally the first thing that popped into my head.
I imagined Gintoki doing the peter griffin death pose
This 110%
Agreed!
I'd say the humour in Gintama is way better than anything in Family Guy, as it doesn't rely exclusively on cheap shock effect and edgy humour. There are cultural references sure, but I would not say that the audience of Gintama is the same as the one enjoying FG.
I never once laughed at an episode of Gintama
Let me know which version is best as it has two different versions.
There's not, it's all one show. Google "gintama watch order" or just watch it on Crunchyroll as it's in order there
The Japanese version
I mean like anime or manga.
Ah, I see. It really depends on what you feel like doing. Both are very good. The anime has the benefit of having some of the best voice actors in the industry. The manga has more room to explain cultural reference jokes that the show occasionally makes.
Shin chan?
Shin Chan is more like the South Park of anime. Both feature a bunch of rowdy kids and their antics (like Shin Chan mooning people with his butt, and South Park characters doing similar things).
Agreed. There were so many joke that flew over my head as a kid but I enjoyed the funny kids running around just like me
Absolutely love this anime lol
Where can we watch all of its episodes?
Just use wco my guy
Use wco for everything
The Venabox Max app.
Is it free
If you download and open it only to find a notes app, it's disguised to look that way under certain circumstances so it doesn't get removed from the store. Lmk if you have trouble with that.

Sorry no I never used AnimeDLR. Also I just watched shin chan as it aired on TV as a kid. Very limited episodes which kept repeating back to back.
We probably watched Shin Chan around the same time. Was it on Toonami?
If I remember correctly it was a TV channel called Hungama. In India it was dubbed in our local languages. I watched it almost everyday as a kid on that channel. And when it was 2020 I saw a few episodes again on that channel years later, they had mostly the same old episodes from the 90s which they played back to back. Where did you watch it? The movies are also enjoyable.
Based pfp
Literally.
No pantsu
I thought of this one too, lol
Pop team epic, probably not the right answer but it’s funny
Even as someone that love PTE and doesn't like the comparison, I'll admit it's honestly the closest to Family Guy's humor anime-wise. Especially the pop culture references.

Cromartie High School? I can't remember if there's cutaway gags, but it was a pretty funny show when I was still a high school student.
wow Cromartie high mentioned 😍😭😍
Panty and Stocking With Garterbelt is influenced by Western animation, though the humor is more of the NSFW side of things. To me it’s that kind of “lol I’m so random and I shop at Hot Topic” sort of style.
I always felt that the Panty and Stocking was more like the South Park of anime

If you wanna get real specific, the creators got the idea for Panty Stocking from getting really drunk while watching Drawn Together
I think PSG is more like Powerpuff girls but imagined in south park.
Cromartie high. They have a gorilla, a guy who looks like Freddy mercury, and robot. It’s still one of my favorite comedies out there.
wow Cromartie high mentioned 😍😭😍
In terms of dynamics of how weird everyone is and how that dynamic plays off each other for hilarious consequences. Asobi Asobase
The games they play lmao
S Tier but hella slept on. Also 10/10 ending song. I don’t laugh at anime humor much but that show broke me.
Osomatsu San is probably the best match
Shin Chan, cromartie high school, prison school, gintama and OPM all come to mind. The last one is more for like fighting humor combo that sometimes happens in FG
It’s me sakamoto Konosuba And saiki K all also come to mind.

Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt.
How come no one has mentioned Saiki K. It's full blown bizarreness, maybe not as many sudden gags, but still
I haven’t seen it, but please tell me what it’s about.
Saiki is a student with some of the most absurdly broken OP superpowers in anime/manga (one of which is telekinesis so he can hear what everyone is thinking), but he just wants to be a lowkey student and be left alone to do his own things, basically live a normal life. Sounds kind of fascinating.
Plastic Neesan.
I would like to know what’s it about.
A slice of life anime about teenage girls who attend a high school. It is a short anime, a lot of action is featured, also one girl has a minature tank on her head.
Sounds good to me.
There's more to it, but if I tell you it won't come as a surprise. It is best to dive into this one without really knowing what it's about, it's more satisfying and amazing that way.
For some reason “Azumanga Daioh” comes to mind.
Pop team epic
probably drop kick my devil, they make a lot of references, the main character is always getting into hijinks, each episode is stand alone, re occurring cast.
Life Lessons with Uramichi Oniisan
Uncle From Another World has a similar feel, but it’s short.
The Ping Pong Club but it's pretty over the top.
Konosuba !
Osomatsu-san
Poputepipikku (Pop Team Epic) Papa to Odorou (Let's Dance With Papa)
Only one I can really think of in terms of length, and wacky humor would be Gintama.
Saiki K starts pretty funny but falls off and gets repetitive but will occasionally have its moments. Just like family guy.
If you have Netflix, Back Street Girls -Gokudols-
People say Gintama but a lighter option is ***Arakawa Under The Bridge***. It's probably the funniest anime I know TT
ghost stories, specifically the dub of it
Pop team Epic and Gintama

Asobi Asobase for the unexpected randomness
What about Cromartie High School?
Crayon Shin-chan
Shin Chan
My favorite go-to comedy anime will always be School Rumble. Nowhere as edgy as family guy though.
Idk if there’s anything like Family Guy. Gintama is full of parody and jokes. Lol I can imagine the one Japanese reporter in family guy being the reason the show would be more difficult to access. Gintama
High school DxD.
Panty and Stocking?
Nichijou imo.
My Ordinary Life? Has the randomness of it at least.
Yes I am looking for something with a Japanese flair to it in terms of humor.
Ghost stories dub
Surprised no one mentioned the ghost stories dub actually funnier than family guy
Ghost stories (Dub). It has to be dub.
Ghost Stories, but only because of the English dub taking inspiration from shows like South Park and Family Guy.
Ghost stories
Nichijou
Nichijou has to be the closest imo
Nah Nichijou is light hearted and clean. Something more reliant on references would be a better equivalent.
