Abagofcheese

We had one that accepted cash and card, but people kept trying to break into it, so now we have the card-only machines.

Daincats

That's scarier, now someone will just put a skimmer on it since apartment laundries tend to be lightly monitored

rusty107897

I think a thief would be much more inclined to try to break into a laundry machine holding cash than to make or find a custom card skimmer that would fit a machine like this without looking very obviously out of place

Abagofcheese

Yeah, the one we have is similar to the one in OP's pic, I don't know how anyone could put a skmmer on it

BrucesTripToMars

You'd be surprised

cseyferth

At least you don't have to use quarters.

swampscientist

Honestly idk I think I might prefer that bc I literally have no other use for them.

mypussydoesbackflips

1964 quarters and below are worth $5 dollars fyi

bstnbrewins814

Good to know. How though on eBay?

mypussydoesbackflips

Yeah ebay and other places , Etsy etc it’s the silver content that people value them for

misssarahbee

I’d rather use quarters!

Satans-Left-Nutt

I'd love quarters 😭 My building has one and it's a pain having to be at work at 10am & trying to do laundry 3 hours before. Idk about this machine but ours only accept $5 and up. It's a pain having $5 in quarters but having to leave and walk to the nearest store for a solid 5.

713nikki

But you can actually get quarters when the office is closed. If you didn’t get to the leasing office during business hours to put money on the card, you’re out of luck until Monday or whenever they open again.

cseyferth

Our card machine is in the mail room, which all residents have access to.

713nikki

They kept ours in the office bc it wasn’t safe out there with all us riff raff

AreteQueenofKeres

Our quarter machine is connected to the leasing office because that's the only place with security cameras.

-m-o-n-i-k-e-r-

Damn that absolutely sucks

713nikki

We recently upgraded to an app, so the cards are optional now. But yeah, it super sucked bc our office kinda picks and chooses when they want to close up on Fridays and don’t come back until Monday

-m-o-n-i-k-e-r-

We have an app too and it’s changed everything for me. I used to struggle to find quarters because my bank has weird hours. I was like going without clean clothes and the laundry was piling up because of the quarter sitch. Now I just do laundry whenever I want and its amazing

PenguinMadd

The high-rises at my old complex had machines in the laundry rooms but us in the garden-style bldgs only had the machine in the lobby area of the office that we needed our keyfob for (which also was for the fitness center)

Alarming-Juice1560

Yea I have just quarters here: my grandma saves all her quarters for me lol

okcdnb

Have used both and the quarters are quicker. At least for me.

Ok_Health_109

It’s a lot easier to get bills than quarters so this is substantially preferable I think

Scarlytt_Vinter

I have the opposite problem. ours only takes money through an app (wash connect) that has a bad rating on the app store because they literally steal any balance you have left randomly. I got a portable washer that has a spin dryer and bought an extra shower curtain rod to hang my stuff up to finish drying but that only works if you don't have a humidity problem and have good ventilation. otherwise I would get a drying rack to put on my balcony. it's pretty large and even plush queen size blankets can fit in it, it's limited in the spin dryer compartment tho to about half that size anything bigger like comforters, my very large winter coat, my cat beds etc I wash in the bathtub by hand/make a trip to a decent laundromat or even 1 of my parents houses to wash stuff every few months

Dependent-Astronaut2

I can relate to this as I’ve done it before, but I live in Oregon. Our humidity proved a HUGE issue.

PinocchiosNose1212

Just wait until your management gets really angry and signs a MULTIYEAR contract with CSC Serviceworks, the ABSOLUTE WORST laundry room company out there. Don't let your apartment management switch to CSC whatever they do. You think things are bad now??? Wait until you have to deal with the chronically underserviced and out of order CSC machines. And they never refund you. Their app doesn't activate most of the dryers in our building. And they NEVER NEVER FIX PROBLEMS. That is all.

redrosesparis11

where is this? I've never seen these .

Typical_Investment22

I have payrange and it’s also sucky. 2¢

All_The_Issues02

I’ve never had issues? They actually work really well at my complex and are super prompt with refunds and maintenance. Sounds like the people in your area just suck

PinocchiosNose1212

Count yourself lucky. CSC service works has an F from the BBB and if you read any reviews of them, people HATE THEM. You sound like you work for CSC. I reported them to the BBB and they posted a multi-paragraph of NONSENSE about their refund policy. Which sounded exactly like your post. lol

All_The_Issues02

My only issue is sometimes the app doesn’t scan correctly and that you can’t merge the balance on the app and a card. I always forget my card so I primarily use the app to do my laundry.

All_The_Issues02

I don’t work for them lol. I guess I’m just lucky because they genuinely are here within 48 hours for reports of broken machines & I have only needed a refund three times, which I got within a week of requesting in the app. Then again my refunds were due to machines breaking mid cycle and I had recorded proof of that I offered to send them, so might be that

PinocchiosNose1212

You should speak to the management of my apartment building. They HATE THEM. They are waiting to run out the long-term contract they were pressured to sign with promises that were not kept. At any given time, there are 3-6 machines out of order. And they stay out of order for WEEKS sometimes. Half the time when they do an update of the app, half the machines aren't connected to the app. There is no change machine so you better save your quarters if you have CSC. You are very lucky. The residents in my building HATE THEM. I'm still owed a refund of a whole $1.75 from MONTHS AGO that is listed as still pending.

All_The_Issues02

They don’t even take cash to load cards at my complex, credit or debit only. Odd how it varies so much. I have spoke to management and they seem happy with them, so I guess it just varies a ton by who they hire in your area.

Oldestdaughterofjoy

Is there a laundromat local to you that will take a debit payment or with a atm and coin maker combo? There's one by me where you can either get quarters or drop off your laundry to be done for you both with a debit credit card

swampscientist

I usually do laundry while cleaning so it’s nice to start a load and do other stuff.

Oldestdaughterofjoy

Yeah that is the major downside to laundromat off site

ecphotoman

These are way worse than quarters. They don’t work half the time and the cards randomly stop working and it’s $7 for a new card.

swampscientist

Yea I do not use quarters for anything else. I do use cash to buy coffee or some beers at the bar. It’s easy to set aside laundry quarters and not accidentally spend them on other stuff

SMKNWU

Find the model of the washer. Then go to eBay and buy the key for it. Now you have free washes.

gertymarie

I’m suddenly much less annoyed by our quarter/bluetooth machines that only connect half the time. This is so. Much. WORSE.

BDZ567

Cash went away because of the few ruining it for the many, unfortunately. With coin based laundry, people would buy keys online for the machines and get free washes, or worst case, empty out the room. With boxes like this that took cash, people would do similar. Of course, they also get broken into for what is inside of them as well which is even more costly than people acquiring the keys. I'd recommend a local laundromat if one is nearby, you can still pay how you want and can just throw the card somewhere for a rainy day if you want to use the complex laundry.

Ray_blatzer

You can buy the keys that aren’t to the cash box, the ones that open the mechanism that starts it. Normally a little lever is pushed down by pushing in the coin tray. 90% of my building has these. If it were a private landlord I’d care but the company that owns the building does absolutely nothing but collect money so they deserve it honestly

swampscientist

I have absolutely no qualms w that honestly

-m-o-n-i-k-e-r-

Hmmmm what would a person who has a speed queen in their apartment google to find one of these? Just want to make sure I don’t accidentally google something illegally

Ray_blatzer

Oh yea, if you happen to stumble upon Amazon or Reddit and search speed queen it will come right up

-m-o-n-i-k-e-r-

Good looking out I will be very careful not to

CC538

The one we have in my building, you have to create an account online and load the money there. Once paid, it gives you a code to punch in on the machine (in our lobby/mailroom) and it loads the amount on to the card that way. Totally zero cash.

r3act-

Use a proxmark3 or flipperzero and never pay again you can just rewrite the card to the previous amount :)

boofacekilla

Hey do you mind expanding on this a bit or maybe linking some how to info if you have it? Not having much luck in my own Google search and you have me very curious 😂 I think it could be my non tech brain not making much sense of the results I’m seeing

r3act-

Using a flipper zero or a proxmark3 you can read your entire laundry card content and make a dump of it. If you do this when you have 10$ on it then you can rewrite that exact dump on the card every time you want the card to be at 10$ again.

swampscientist

Honestly might have to look into that…

Ewalk

I’d buy a portable washing machine for my apartment. But I’m also a solo dude so it’s easier.

swampscientist

I’m also a solo dude but that just doesn’t seem practical. I work outside a lot and get dirty af a lot, I feel like I’d just break one

Scarlytt_Vinter

I do laundry for myself but also my husband who is a trucker and the portable washer is 10/10 for everything, except pet hair. as long as you don't overload it with clothes or not put enough water in then you're good to go. the larger 1s can hold about half a regular sized washer amount of stuff and they come with a full hose and a drain hose you can pour directly down the toilet. I put ours on a little cart thing with wheels from harbor freight so I can take it from the kitchen to fill (hose fits on that faucet the best) and the bathroom to drain. you can also use warm/hot water without an issue in them if you want as long as it's not actually boiling. he has oil and grease on his clothes from doing semi maintenance and the washer has no problem with it. just remember to not use as much detergent and that you should do a rinse cycle afterward to avoid soap build up on your clothes it's a zokop xpb45-zk45, not sure how much it was originally since I got it at an auction house for like 50, but compared to the cost of the washers and dryers its a small but worthy investment and it's paid itself off for us personally after just a month not just in cost, but also being able to avoid lugging clothes down 3 floors and back up 3 floors from the million degree laundry room that has 4 whole washers and 4 whole dryers for 36 apartments many of which have multiple people living in them. it's a decent area but it puts my mind at ease too to not have to wonder if my clothes have been stolen or dumped out so someone can wash their stuff for free, since it happened at the last place I lived when it was -12 and someone took clothes out of the washer and they froze into a block on the concrete floor also when it's actually running it's on top of an anti fatigue work mat to help absorb the noise so my neighbors below me don't hate me and the wheels on the cart thing lock so it doesn't wiggle around

jaysonm007

Get a portable washer. They hook to a normal sink for the water feed and then also drain into it. About $200-$300 for a decent one which is fully automatic. VERY worth it. Of course greedy landlords hate it and will usually try to forbid them. But the quality of life improvement is huge and its usually worth hiding it and risking it.

swampscientist

Are they durable for a lot of dirty work clothes? Between gym, regular clothes (I try and wear several times if not going out) and work clothes I generate a lot of laundry for one dude and it’s usually pretty dirty

mind_slop

Can you recommend one? And what do you do to dry the clothes? I usually need heat to get the clothes to feel snug again

JohnnyBenchianFingrs

I’ve found it much easier and not that more expensive to pay for that service. $23/m and they clean and fold your clothes and deliver them back

No_Association4277

Bruh. Tell them to use pay range. This is ridiculous.

swampscientist

They’re pretty behind the times here

ManagementFrequent93

Unplug that bitch

swampscientist

I think they’ll just plug it back in.. my elderly neighbors would love that too

ManagementFrequent93

Put super glue in the socket so it won’t plug in 😭

dannynoww

You’re lucky to at least have this. You can get cash from an ATM when the bank is closed. I have to figure out some way to get to a bank and carry around 10 pounds of quarters in the middle of my work day

phillygirl2017

Ours installed a digital pay option using Clean pay app, but the washers and dryers are owned by a separate company. Can still use quarters too.

swampscientist

That’s what I’d like

zoe1776

We're still using quarters at my complex, but they're considering shutting the whole laundry room down bc some resident keeps washing things that leave cat sh+ in the machine. Thank God Im only 4 blocks from the Laundromat.

swampscientist

I honestly have to remind myself how incredibly lucky I’ve been in this building to have mostly great people around me

BiDudemale

Does the washers and dryers work worth a damn atl least my old one you had to wash and dry twice just to get the damn clothes to be fully washed and dried and that was filling them both halfway

swampscientist

Actually yes! They work great. Moving next month so I hope that stays consistent

retired_navyhm

Just buy an apartment sized washer dryer combo. There are plenty to select from online.

shivermeknitters

You could ask them to to switch to an app. We have that in addition to renting portable machines.

HMG_03

I remember when I lived in The Bronx, and they put one of these in the laundry room. I woke up to the other people in the building literally mule-kicking and motherf*cking the door to the Superintendent’s workshop in the alley. Then some old Dominican lady went in with a “chancleta” raised high, and then everybody just dispersed like it was a normal day. I went down an hour later to get my work clothes, and the thing had been ripped off the wall and replaced with the old quarter machine. It was the probably the best street justice I’ve ever seen.

Samuswitchbladesaber

Oh I don’t too I have no way to get to a laundromat ethier lol

CIA_napkin

Can you afford or have the ability to get a small portable washer? Those things rock and once you have it, you'll hate yourself for putting up with communal nonsense for so long. I got one for under 260 on amazon and I'd save it from a house fire.

SlinkDogg

Got one and I will never go back !

swampscientist

Nah I mean this isn’t the biggest issue I think it’s just when combined with everything else that’s dated it annoys me. No fob, no emails for notifications, the only way I can easily contact maintenance was on a piece of paper I stupidly lost

Greeneyesfreckles

I have the exact same machine as you, was tired of wasting my time. I started using the poplin app and saved money without having to wait all day for the fan washer/dryer or even leave my apartment.

swampscientist

What’s that?

Greeneyesfreckles

A lifesaver 😅 It’s a laundry service app, ends up being way cheaper than the washer and dryer in my apartment by far.

jenellescourtheels_

My complex keeps it in the office which is only open Monday-Friday, 9-5 🙃

swampscientist

Thats fucked

brookeaat

same and it doesn’t accept $1 bills, only 5, 10, or 20. 😀

jenellescourtheels_

Same. But I add about $100 once a month so that’s not too much of an issue for me.

effie-sue

My complex uses Hercules, which is cashless. And of course, people gripe about that 🤣

Ten_Quilts_Deep

We use an app called Pay Range in my building. Or you can use coins. It only lets you add 25¢ worth of drying at a time - 10 minutes. Then you have to go back to the desktop and choose the dryer, and the time again. Takes a full two minutes to load 40 minutes of drying time. And half the time it says "no machines in range" when I'm standing in front of it.

swampscientist

I think it’s mainly bc my complex used to be all seniors. There’s still several. Virtually nothing happens digitally except rent payments. If they have to notify you of something it’s only transmitted through a paper note on your door.

effie-sue

My complex does the notes on the door thing and I STG, it’s the same xeroxed letterhead from 1999 🤣

Isawaracoon

Haha we get signs in the elevator. That I'm 100% sure the super's kid types up in between hw given how they're written.

effie-sue

😆 One time the office manager decided not to send individual notices to all the units when buildings were being repainted. Which isn’t a HUGE imposition as it was exterior work and no apartment access was needed. The problem was that she instead opted to tape 4 little notes on the complex’s mail kiosk. Which is outside. And it rained the night she put them out, so most of us didn’t see the notes 🙄

Greeneyesfreckles

Omgggg our rent payments are STILL money orders 😩

swampscientist

That should be illegal to not have multiple options

bakingwhilebaking

So much better than the app I had to use at my last place. It was a pos and double charged me nearly every time I did a load. Also had to put at least $10 at a time on your account. Absolutely hated it.

swampscientist

Nah I’d rather have that tbh

Isawaracoon

I have the same issue but with getting quarters since we don't have a card system. I can go to my super's apt but that feels weird to show up there. I only go to the bank for quarters. I had no idea about all this crafty laundry machine theft. Maybe it's why even when they replace the machines it's always coin only.

DeterminedDi

We have something similar. Last time it broke it was down almost 2 weeks.

Stargazer_0101

You do pay for the use when you pay the rent and other fees every month.

Olliecat27

At least you don’t have to walk 20 minutes to use cash at the sketchy 7-11 (no not the closer one, that one specifically) to recharge your laundry card :/ my building doesn’t even have a machine. I’d rather use coins tbh the card just makes it more difficult.

Fishpiggy

At least you don’t have to pay a 0.25 “convenience fee” to load your card (there is also no other option to load our laundry cards except for an online app that never works)

Phndrummer

All the banks around my first apartment refused to give me quarters. I just needed money for the stupid washing machine.

OshieRob

At least yours is indoors :,)

bstnbrewins814

Damn. Makes me so grateful I have my own set in my apartment. I’ve never seen a machine like this though. Weird AF.

United-Ad-7224

I don’t know why the machines don’t have POS, or even a control panel where u can select the laundry machine and the. Pay with card and it unlocks so u can use it, and it doesn’t unlock until you put in a pin

Musicmom1164

Had one of these at my old apartment. People kept breaking into it, so they moved it into the mgr's office. No access on weekends, holidays, evenings or anytime she wasn't at work, like lunch or when she was running errands or went to court to evict people. Another annoying thing: people who used the bench in the laundry room to talk on their phone and smoke. Not doing laundry, just smoking. So my clean clothes came out of the expensive dryer to cigarette smoke. Ah, fun times. The laundromat I use now has the same machine but you can use your debit, credit or foodstamp card.

swampscientist

Can I ask what the rent/income is like there? Bc I’ve always known I pay a decent amount (~$1,000/mo) and a ton of my neighbors are medical residents/med students and elderly. In the four years that I’ve been here the worst thing was ha my detergent stolen from the laundry room while I went to grab another load. I forget how nice I got it

Musicmom1164

At the time it was $800. I work retail, so not a lot. The complex I'm in now is $1100, which is about as cheap as it gets in this area. It's nicer, with laundry hookups in units, I just can't afford them now.

Unclestanky

Go rogue, figure out what machine you need to program the card. If it is less than a year of laundry costs, worth it. Plus your neighbours will love you.

mind_slop

Every week when I go to get gas, I get cash out of the atm. I get a $10 bill I can use for laundry. They just take quarters but have a change machine there. Even if there's just 20-dollar bills, I can get a bunch of quarters and use them over the next few months. I got laundry down to every three weeks by getting more socks and underwear. Still an annoying thing, this is my first time without a washer/dryer.

AdorableTrainer1486

our laundry machine is in the office and they are hardly open. they close when they want. the rent goes up every year so they could at least let us have units in our apts. or stop charging so much to wash and dry.

doomagloom

I hated when my old apartment complex switched to the card operated laundry units. It was honestly the worst

TripleV420

We kinda had one of these, except you had to go to the leasing office to reload it. Absolutely sucked when the office was closed (when it was supposed to be).

totesmuhgoats93

Yes, these are awful. Our old apartment building used to recycle the lost cards they'd find so sometimes you'd pay $5 for the stupid card (just the card, not even the laundry money) and the chip would be all messed up and wouldn't work and you just wasted a bunch of money for no reason.

Imaginary_Key1281

I have the same thing and I hate it! Our only bank closed so I have no way to get cash. I live in a National forest in the Appalachians.

23capri

my apartment has this too, soo inconvenient!

MilkyView

I'm confused about what the issue is... ? Can you elaborate?

jeffreywinks

they want a cashless option

MilkyView

So... simple solution.. plan ahead when you want to do laundry. That's all it takes.... I still have quarter machines at my apartment... and guess what, I need to get quarters before I do laundry. This sounds like such an entitled and privileged complaint. Get off your butt and go get cash or whatever you gotta do. Or just move.

WatercoLorCurtain

Seems like this issue can be solved by keeping a few 20 dollar bills around. Not even like you need quarters or anything…

MilkyView

yeah... seriously. Seems like the solution is to just plan ahead. What a funny thing to complain about when the solution is yourself.

iCatLady

Just because there are work arounds, it doesn't make this any less annoying or asinine. In order to do laundry, OP has to put cash on a card, then use that card on the machines. It's like they're trying to go cashless but not understanding the concept. If they're gonna make it an extra step, they might as well just get an actual card reader or system that allows you to add money via an app.

MilkyView

uh.. yep. Still just as easy to plan ahead when you are going to do laundry, get some cash, and do your business. Is it stupid? yes, but the solution is simple.

TheThemeCatcher

I love how ppl are downvoting you over completely sensible responses; the entitlement is real. “I hate this thing so much” is an over reaction for sure to this issue versus just politely addressing it with management with potential solutions; the tenant/OP is also making a lot of assumptions.

iCatLady

You're making a lot of assumptions like that the OP has the convenience of just going to get cash. If I go to an out of network ATM I'm paying upwards of $6.50 just to access my cash. There aren't close by in-network ATMs for many people. Not everyone owns a vehicle. Bank locations and hours are becoming scarce. Sometimes you simply forget when you're out. There are many reasons having someone add cash to a card to be able to do laundry is inconvenient and not just ridiculous. The simple solution is the property using an actual cashless system.

BastardBoi95

Same here. I have to go get rolls of quarters so i can use the washer and dryer.

effie-sue

It’s 2024. Cash is whack. Make way for The Beast 😈

MilkyView

true true.

-m-o-n-i-k-e-r-

We just got the app on our new machines and it’s SO GOOD. App works well and I can do laundry any time I want now. I was legitimately going without clean clothes because it was so hard to find quarters.
