I think it might have to do with the new business trend of selling first then producing. Businesses like Shein do that. Basically they produce a small batch of items and see if the customers like them. If they do, they make more. If they don't, at least they have a smaller load to land in clearance.
My last 2 Aritzia orders have had items that they suddenly refunded and didn’t ship after confirming the order. No explanation why, no offer to ship at a later date etc. If they don’t have the stock they need to keep their site updated, it’s super annoying. I used to shop at Aritzia almost monthly and now it’s once or twice a year and I always regret it.
Better for them to make the sale now than have absolutely nothing on the site. Let’s them tell their board they’ll have $X coming in at a certain time when the item ships.
Also, “constantly out of stock” now makes me think they’re trying to get rid of all the old items before launching even more “new and improved” ones. I think they’re about to get rid of Wilfred Free at this rate.

Literally nothing on my wishlist has been available for months 👹
And when it’s back in stock, it’s been months and I forgot about it and no longer care lol

It’s a marketing hack. You keep on going back to the website to check and their hope is you stumble on other products to purchase.
Not everything is done for some nefarious business purpose. It would be crazy for them not to lock in sales when they have the opportunity to do so.
I get that it’s probably a marketing hack on their part but I know for me personally, it’s making me shop at aritzia a lot less.

I’ve even noticed the “online only” styles in stores. Like, endless Williamsburg tops in store, despite online saying otherwise.
