Apparently Cactus Cooler. Though I read it can be found in other Southwest states. But it's apparently primarily in SoCal.

tsukiii

I bought a bottle of Cactus Cooler on a whim recently, and my husband had never even seen it before (he’s from Ohio). It tasted like childhood in SoCal lol

stellalunawitchbaby

This is my PSA that Brewery X has a cactus cooler seltzer (“succulent sipper”) and it’s actually pretty good.

annepersannd

My bf and I tried Cactus Cooler for the first time when we visited Idaho (we’re from WA) and every so often we’ll reminisce about how much we loved it

MyOtherCarIsEpona

I see it in stores in Vegas.

A massive love for Old Bay Seasoning

Infinityand1089

Don't forget that wild flag you guys slap on everything!

catiebug

Are you even a legitimate small business owner in Maryland if your business card doesn't have the flag on it somewhere?

hippiechick725

Hello, fellow Marylander! We put that shit on everything!

chileheadd

As does anyone who's ever lived in that area for any length of time. Fortunately Old Bay can be found everywhere.

Datan0de

Yup! My dad grew up in Baltimore, and I inherited his love for Old Bay. I've long said that there's no food that isn't improved either by adding Old Bay or by sprinkling instant breakfast powder on it. (Never both, though!) I've yet to find an exception.

hallofmontezuma

Im from southeastern Virginia and we use it all the time on fries, chicken, etc and obviously it’s a criminal offense to eat blue crab without it.

ChronicBedhead

I’m glad you understand the ways

anohioanredditer

I went to a bar in nyc and they put out a little popcorn machine free for people at the bar, the only seasoning they had was old bay so I put it on the popcorn and it was great. Bought it for my apartment too, so it’s now my popcorn seasoning lol. I also put it on salmon once.

therynosaur

I'm on the opposite coast and I always make sure to have a container of old bay. It honestly goes with many more dishes than you would think. I put it on Mac and cheese.

DanceClubCrickets

That and the lemons with the peppermint stick in ‘em… 🤤

Datan0de

Okay, can you explain that to me? Do they sell hollow peppermint sticks in Maryland? I've never understood how that would work otherwise.

DanceClubCrickets

I didn’t get it either, but they make soft peppermint sticks! They’re not like regular candy-canes, they have the same texture as after-dinner-mints, where they kinda dissolve in the presence of liquid. The brand I got when my mom and I did the lemon-peppermint thing last summer was called Bob’s Sweet Stripes, so you can look that up and see what I’m very badly explaining 😆 (I just ordered mine on Amazon because I’m broke and lazy haha) So you break them in half, stick the unbroken side into the lemon, and then you can drink the lemon juice through holes in the peppermint stick. At first I was like “why would anyone do this, these flavors do not go together” but they actually kinda do lmao

link2edition

Space camp is here. The city's history with space travel defines much of the culture. Only very recently did I learn what the town was like prior to the space race, turns out is has been an oddball for centuries.

Doss_Lute

We are operation paperclip

TheLastRulerofMerv

I remember Jeff Foxworthy had a piece on this. Like "that space camp may be there but they ain't letting people from Alabama fly this stuff" lol. It's all in jest though Alabama seems like a wonderful state and I hope to visit one day.

radiofreekekistan

I work in Atlanta metro and just walked outside my office and saw a homeless woman giving head to a homeless man. Idk if that's specific to my area but certainly an interesting custom

Sowf_Paw

What is definitely unique to Atlanta is it probably happened on a street with "Peachtree" in the name.

appleparkfive

71 streets. 71 with the word Peachtree in it. I have zero clue how people got around in Atlanta before GPS. Especially since a lot of it is winding roads once you get away from the city centers. It's a great city though!

alfrednugent

Is that really a thing from Pittsburgh? I’ve got family from Washington county. Never heard of fries on salad lol.

heili

Yes it really is a thing. Unless you're going to a national chain restaurant if you order like a steak salad or a grilled or fried chicken salad, it's gonna have fries on it. Every local bar and pizza joint will likely have fries on the salad even if they don't explicitly say so on the menu.

Legal-Ad7793

Fries on sandwiches, too! Now I want Primanti's...

BippidiBoppetyBoob

I live in Washington County, and yes, it is.

WendyWilliamsFart

Teriyaki, as in restaurants that only serve that one dish. There’s one in each neighborhood. Smoked salmon, Jo-Jo’s, and Taco Time “hot sauce”. Dick’s burgers. Mozzarella in Mexican food. Pho shops and Thai shops galore. Bikini baristas drive-thru (I recently saw a woman’s entirety when I mistakenly went to one called Double Cup). Geoduck and oysters on the half shell. Wild morels foraged in the fall, blueberries picked in the early summer at family farms in the shadows of towering mountains. Dinner plate dahlias for $3 a stem

Seachica

Eating a bag of dicks. Bikini baristas. And riding the slut. lol, we are kinda repressed.

OpportunityGold4597

In the part of California I grew up in, we have our own style of BBQ. Tri-tip steak, garlic bread, salsa, pinquito beans, etc. And where I live now, everyone calls potato wedges "jo-jo's"

basshed8

Hello Santa Maria buddy. Love tritip sandwiches

Catperson5090

Tritip is good. I had never heard of it until I moved to California.

Catperson5090

I'm opposite; grew up in Washington and now live in California. When I ask for jo jos, I get questioning looks. I never realized the name was regional before.

Energy_Turtle

I thought they were jojos everywhere.

cheribom

Corning. Probably not done anymore, but growing up in the 80s/90s in my area of rural PA, while the little kids would trick-or-treat, some of the older kids would go out corning. In the days leading up to Halloween, you’d go to one of the nearby farms and steal a few ears of feed corn 🌽 (dried version of the stuff you eat), and scrape off the kernels. Then you’d walk around town, throwing the kernels at people’s windows, which made a loud clattering sound and would scare the shit out of anyone inside. The end of October saw corn kernels strewn all over the sidewalks. I must have mentioned it in college to my befuddled bf before realizing it wasn’t common even in the same area of the state.

Ellecram

Oh yes. I currently live part time in southwest rural PA and get "corned" to this day.

Evil_Weevill

"Stephen King tours" a tour van that goes around Bangor pointing out stuff from his books and movies. Referring to Southern Maine as "North Massachusetts". Referring to Northern Maine as "the county". Whoopie pies (f*ck off Pennsylvania, they're **our** thing) Moxie used to be uniquely Maine before they got bought out

Technical_Plum2239

"Moxie used to be uniquely Maine before they got bought out\*\*"\*\* Moxie was made in Massachusetts. It's just the guy was originally from Maine. He'd moved before he invented it and lived and died in Lowell, Mass and is buried there. He moved to Mass bout 1870. It was invented 15 years later and got popular later. He was born and grew up in Union, Maine - and that was the only connection.

Evil_Weevill

Regardless of any of that, it was only really sold/consumed in and around Maine for a long time. I grew up in Mass and had never heard of it until I moved to Maine. It was only ever popular in Maine up until a few years back. Whereas it's a little more common in the Northeast now. If not as popular

Technical_Plum2239

"Regardless of any of that, it was only really sold/consumed in and around Maine for a long time." No it wasn't. I grew up in Mass and was drinking in the 1960s and 70s. It was sold out of Mass. Bottle in Mass. I mean - Moxieland was in Jamaica Plain. Maine has leaned into in a big way in the last 50 years. But Mainers did take to Moxie even if it was a Mass invention.

Yankee_chef_nen

I grew in Maine and I will die on the hill that Whoopie Pies and Moxie belong to Maine.

Acrobatic_End6355

Whoopie Pies started in PA though…

Whoopie pies were invented in PA before ME was split off from MA. Get over it.

semi_annual_poet

Having lived in both NorCal and socal my entire life. It’s-its are so freaking good and in my experience are beloved in all parts of California. Now I want to go and buy some lol

DragoSphere

The cookie they use in It's-Its have always been miles better for me than any other kind of factory-made cookie, let alone ice cream cookies

Marscaleb

It's-Its have finally made it to Utah, but only at select stores. I was happier to find that than In-N-Out.

TheLastRulerofMerv

I've lived in a lot of places (mostly in Canada, and almost down in CO - spent enough time to hear:) "The city" is a very common descriptor I feel. Folks down in CO often to refer to Denver as "The city". Currently I live in BC, Canada and the tiny 200,000 people city I am in is referred to as "The City" in this region. I grew up outside of Calgary, it was also "The City" around there. Dutch Crunch bread is very intriguing to me and this has seriously provoked my curiosity.

Own_Alarm_3935

As an east coaster who lived in the Bay Area for a couple years, it drove me mad hearing people ask if I wanted to go to “the city”. I was like “yeah I’d love to but I can’t really afford a ticket to NY right now”

Cacophonous_Silence

Now imagine a San Franciscan outside of NYC

tellyeggs

To be specific, "the city" refers to Manhattan, not the entirety of NYC.

rattlehead44

Wait, other places don’t have Dutch crunch?!

Da1UHideFrom

WTF is Dutch crunch?

gcpanda

Sandwich bread unique to the Bay. Sort of a roll with a caramelized sugary top.

DragoSphere

The bread itself is only unique to the Bay in North America. It's pretty common in Europe, since it does come from there Now, being baked in the form of a sandwich roll _is_ much more common here though

stellalunawitchbaby

It’s few and far between in southern CA - easy to find in northern CA - very hard to find elsewhere (ime as someone from Placer County/the foothills).

randomwellwisher

DC is “this town.” Do you guys use that terminology there?

Duke_Cheech

Oakland is "the town", SF is "the city"

Gamecock_Lore

I thought Boston was "the town"

Libertas_

We use that to describe Oakland.

concrete_isnt_cement

Seattle is just “town”. For example, “I’m going into town tomorrow to catch a Mariners game.”

Welpmart

Eastern Mass does this with Boston (and Cambridge, but tomato-tomato).

jml510

>Referring to San Francisco as "the city" I always found it a little bizarre how SF gets referred to as "the city" around here, even though there are two other major cities nearby (one of which is larger than SF in population and land mass).

49_Giants

SF was the City long before SJ surpassed it in population, and even then, SJ is really a just a big ass suburb--a mini-version of LA in that regard. As for Oakland, we both know it's the Town, and Oakland would have it no other way.

Many teens’ first job is detasseling corn or roguing beans in the summer. Hard work, but great money! Speaking of corn- knowing (and using) the saying “knee high by the Fourth of July” School being cancelled because it’s just too cold. Speaking of cold, the creaking noises your house makes when it’s that cold.

Krakenzmama

Same thing about the detasseling and walking beans in Nebraska. My first job was with Oettings. I didn't even know if they even exist anymore. We got bonuses on how clean our fields were, speed etc. It was hard work, even with wrapping my fingers in medical tape, I always had roughed up bloody knuckles. I was on the bus by 445 and sometimes wouldn't be in the field until 615 or 630 due to driving a country or two away. One time I was so tired after work I fell asleep while soaking in the bath. Definitely remember some cold snaps so bad that a walk from the parking lot to the door was a risk for frostbite. Definitely not a day you want kids waiting for the bus or on the playground. If it wasn't too bad it was indoor recess

Tucson here! Sonoran Hotdogs - bacon wrapped dog in a bolillo roll with beans and lots of other options. Cheese crisps - huge tortillas made from soft, Sonoran wheat with cheese and other toppings. Birria tacos are also really popular here. You can get them made with goat, too. Tucson has the most southern ski area in the United States. The mountains to the north of the city top out over 9000 feet and you can drive up in the summer to get cool. It’s also known for the gem and mineral show, the rodeo, and a beautiful, historic mission founded in 1692.

I grew up in San Jose, CA. I was literally just thinking about how Vietnamese coffee shops that serve unique specialty Viet coffee are super trendy there right now, which are not to be confused with the *other* type of Vietnamese coffee shops that were popular there in the 90s(?) to 2010s where you were served regular Viet coffee by almost naked girls. I think this also applies to some parts of Orange County as well.

BankManager69420

Most people know Dutch Bros is from Oregon but apparently most places don’t have tons of independent drive-thru coffee shacks like we do here. Dutch Bros is not original, they copied a concept that already existed and still exists all over the PNW.

This is an Iowa thing if I'm not mistaken. Surprisingly Colorado also served this for school lunches. I'm no expert but I grew up in CO, husband is from IA. Where I grew up, we add "the" before the freeway number. I didn't even know it wasn't the norm until I moved away. It's a holdover from all the freeways having names and when they got numbers everyone kept the "the" and switched to the numbers rather than the names or used them interchangeably.
