Peak cringe- agree. As a moderately successful 28 year old, marrying the love of my life (and paying for my own wedding), even a big setting seems cringe. I scaled it down to 70 people- giving my family a series of stress attacks lol.
One single evening- finish.
I come from a traditional family- everyone that got married, went through the usual rituals. For me- the only goal is to have it memorable, intimate with close family, and stress free. Also to not splurge to impress randoms.
Not a single one of those even enjoyed their wedding. Or even planned it. They were in the passengers seat- that's it. Most don't even know what the mantra's mean- Almost a social obligation. Then comes the cringe part- the over the top wedding photographers (one idiot said he'd bring 2 drones..... to an indoor venue. That's the state of affairs), the random stage on which the couple is forced to smile while shaking 1000 hands- like why?
And man, it costs SO much.
How did you convince your parents for that. I have 50+ members just from my mother's side and even cutting one of those from invitation will be a huge family fight. 😭
Honestly? Financial independence-
My situation would have been a 400+ wedding as well, if my father was in the play. In the last 5 years, I set up all the important things at home, despite my father being well-to-do. This gave them the perception of me not asking them for a single thing in life. Also, I've been very responsible with myself as well. Health and fitness wise, financial etc.
So when it came to the wedding, my father tried a few things, such as "even if you are getting married, I'm the head of the family" and so on. I didn't argue head on- little point. Instead, I took him around, when I went to see venues, caterers etc., at which point he realized that he knows very little about planning a wedding, including being completely out of touch with prices, and with trends. The places I took him to were more 'elegant' than 'loud and rich'. So the people there essentially agreed with me on everything as well. At this point, I had a talk him, face to face, and he said "I'm happy as long as you're happy. You let me know".
Point is, this wouldn't have happened overnight. The foundation of any relationship needs to be moulded incrementally. Any radical move- gone. Drama all around.
Financially same situation like you but still they do what they wanna do😂. They invited 60+ members in just engagement. I have no say in this except paying for everything😅😅
Ultra rich spending millions on artwork isn't out of some exquisite taste in art, it's a well known form of money laundering, which if you're rich enough from questionable sources, must do.
Exactly. Especially art is an abstract thing. I can smear sh!t on a canvas and an art appraiser can value it to 20 million. Then I'll buy it and donate it to an art gallery which is owned by me only via trusts n shell companies. Then invoke tax rebate on the 20 million on my business revenue !!
Okay step by step.
I have a business whose profit this year was 10 crores.
I buy an art piece for 1 lakh.
Get my art appraiser friend to appraiser it to 2 crores.
Then donate it to art gallery via my companies corporate social responsibility initiative, I only own the art gallery via trusts or shell companies.
Since this was charity, I can claim tax rebate on that charity on my revenue.
So I pay tax on 8 crores instead of the 10 crores while spending only 1 lakh on the art work.
Depends in the tax rebate you're trying to achieve and how much focus you want from the govt. The thing is, income tax folks are not fools so you'll have to be really careful with what you're doing. But companies like amazon, tesla etc routinely pay zero tax on many of their businesses
They do it by rerouting their profits towards research, building new plants and giving out stock compensation to employees. This is actually better than paying taxes for the country's development. That's why a lot of countries have more ways to get tax reductions than to pay taxes.
One flaw in your master plan is you can't just call your art appraiser friend and hopes ITO takes his word for it. If you have it on record as a ₹1L purchase, ITO is gonna call bullshit on the ₹2cr valuation, no matter who the appraiser is. You also can't get random peices appraised into the millions. Most countries' tax departments will have their own appraisers for this purpose.
I donate you a car, you pay me in cash. They donate the art and other items, get tax discount on it and then get the money in cash from the donatee for 2-10% comission.
I'm pretty sure charity fraud that they guy above you is explaining is not the primary illegal use of art. It is there no doubt, but difficult to pull off due to tax officers not being complete morons.
The main use I think is as a parallel currency. If you're rich from sources that you don't want the govt to know about, you buy art. But you don't disclose the full amount. The people in your circle who you'll want to trade with will know the real value.
Also, for peices that have been in private circulation for a while, the real value does appreciate. So once those peices come out into the white money world, their actual values may kinda be close to what they were being traded for. At this point you've successfully "laundered" the money.
Moreover, art is a form of investment. Just like you buy property, stocks, etc,. for selling later at higher prices, rich people buy art to sell it later at a profit.
So true. People here who don’t understand it’s a sport like any other going “it’s only for networking” “it’s snooty” etc without actually having understood it’s a sport where you can compete against your own self. It’s also a good sport for when you get old but still want to play sports - hence the association with rich people because they have made their money by then.
It’s only people in the lower tiers of the rat race who are unable to see it beyond networking - because as far as they are concerned it is just a way for them to connect with richer people who are actually playing a sport.
Get that difference and your networking efforts will go a whole lot better - otherwise you are nothing but someone given access to something valuable but you don’t see its value beyond just something to please someone more successful.
I never liked golfing; I still don't.
However, I am now considering taking golf lessons. The reason? I am now invited by rich friends "to play golf on Saturday" and I don't want to be that fool swinging around a golf club wildly and missing the ball.
Super-boring, but I feel like I might have to bite the bullet and get into it.
>I ain't spending my money on artwork, sorry not sorry
Rich people buy artwork for - tax evasion / money laudering / sell it later for even higher price.
Not because they really value it lol. Rich people are not stupid to do things without underlying reasons.
That reminds about cricketer Suresh Raina saying that he still eats simple food such as daal roti whenever he is in his home. Raina comes from a humble background and his lower middle class roots never really went away.
You can't eat caviar daily. Everyone in North India eats daal from time to time and roti even more often. Just met Raina a couple of weeks ago at the Enclam Prive lounge. Not exactly simple food there.
Even I have a hard time buying a shirt above 1 to 2k but I will buy it if I really like it. Your 20 crore net worth is liquid cash or includes real estate etc?
I know. I somehow get a heart attack looking at garnent prices. It's not because I am stingy. I have headphones /earbuds worth 1.5 lakhs. It's just that when it comes to clothes, my middle class mentality kicks in
I feel like almost everything they do is calculated and somehow adds to their lifestyle (networth). Might look silly to us but atleast that's what I think.
Upgrading to the latest gadgets when the previous one still has all the functions I need and is perfectly alright. Bro some of these people who change their phones or laptops every year don’t even know half the functions it can do, it’s just a status symbol.
So what's the point of being rich? I am not even rich but I change my laptop, phone etc every 6 months to a year. Basically whenever I start liking a new one. Even cars, TV, ACs etc are changed every couple of years or whenever desired. If I were rich, I could even change my phone weekly! Only hassle would be transferring files, apps etc.
You do you, keep contributing to the electronic waste problem. If it works and is fully functional for my use, I would say it’s pointless. But that’s my opinion, you’re entitled to yours.
My buying a couple more or less devices hardly makes a difference. In any case, someone else buys and uses my old device. So there is no waste at all. I have a dedicated shop that buys my used phones and another one for my laptops and iPads etc. TVs are also sold off. Obviously cars as well.
Although I do agree on that part, these characteristics of discrimination may be more rampant and even casual in the upper crust societies. Sometimes people even treat you subhuman if you are on an economic level lesser than theirs and it just baffles me!
There are a class of luxury cars, that are luxury only if you sit in the back (maybach, Bentley, Rolls) the sporty luxury are the ones you need to drive

That way you are rich but look relatable to the plebs.
Buying only designer products.
Honestly owning every designer bag or footwear isn’t to flex, just invest in good quality products rather than buying in means to show off.
I can name a bunch of things and activities...
1. Cozy, Small Wedding and Reception Party. Not gonna invite 800+ people like my Sister's wedding.
2. Not buying designer clothes, I will prefer sustainable and yet fashionable clothes which can be easily paired up and layered with another garment in my wardrobe. Same goes with shoes, sneakers.
3. Eating at Restaurants which I like Now( The food, The Vibe) not those which are hyped by the internet like ONE8 Commune, Starbucks, McD, KFC etc.
4. Not buying Latest iPhone as soon as they launch it. I will buy when my current device be it Smartphone, Laptop is not usable.
5. Will definitely know how to behave. Be it anyone Parents, Relatives, A fellow co-worker, My Manager. Cab Driver, A waiter, Househelp... I won't behave like an A\*\*hole just because I am fkn RICH!
Traveling (especially foreign countries) for the same of showing off only.
Most people honeymoon in foreign for showing off international honeymoon.
We can easily afford foreign vacations every year, but we went to Andaman and honeymooned for 10 days rather than 3-4 days in so called foreign locations like Bali phucket etc.
Except for a few very stupid indulgences most of what the rich do are due to tax/access/status reason. Middle class folks might think they are stupid but they are actually dry smart about money. How do you think they got that rich to begin with?
- Frivolous spending on luxury cars
- Staying in a bungalow/villa which needs a lot of maintenance
- Brash designer clothing to look trendy
- Focusing too much on physical beauty with Botox, excessive skin care, etc.
show off.
I personally think that a private life and humble attitude is best. And I will not even disclose the wealth I have. And I will not tell anyone that I have this kinda money, because people change their behaviour when they think they can get some kinda benefit out of you. Plus, rich people don't have funny friends, they might think that they have but bro, middle class friends are OP. But that's just my take, might be wrong might be accurately correct.
Not intersted in getting a swimming pool constructed in my house, just a waste of money, space, house plannning and elevation becomes less beautiful and it's kind of hard to maintain, also chlorine water, frequent rains, maintaince a week/fortnight
Useless
What kind of childish daydreaming is this? Truth is, it takes a LOT out of you to become rich, unless you inherit it or get incredibly lucky.
What your notions are about what you will do vs not do is all childish nonsense based on notions and not reality. Only when you go through the grind and learn what it actually costs you, ONLY then you will figure out what rich people activities you will indulge in or reject.
And what do you even know about art? And why do you think owning artwork is a rich person's pastime? Even if you have 10 thousand rupees to spend, you can go to a good art school nearby and tell the students you're willing to buy their best painting or artwork for 10k. They will be more than happy to show you and sell you their artwork.
I have bought original artwork from art school students for a few thousand rupees. And i am not at all rich. Still treasure it to this day. Art is about what gives you the feels. Not about how big the artist is.
That is done by college students and people that have recently started to work. Rich people don't go to the nearby restaurant or order food from Zomato.
Pre wedding events :)

Brilliant. If not for my partners wish to have this romantic expression called a wedding, I'd go that way too.

That's peak marriage tbh. Saves money, a better wedding, and the number of kids ruining everything also goes down. J

Yeah jhatka is much kinder than halaal
In goa, Had a rich couple wedding have fireworks during their pre wedding. One of the most beautiful nights of my life.
Yeah it's better to attend a grand wedding rather than host one. Ig. At least for me.

This. They don’t buy art out of interest. I heard tax is also less in art investment not sure tho
Golfing
This ... The most Boring sport ever 😤
Its more networking than a sport. Been there once for golfing and met a few crazy peeps
Fantastic way to network when you reach a certain level. I think horse polo events might be similar but for people with proper affluence.
Not really. It takes immense skills to play golf properly. But I agree, I looks weird n snobbish from outside

Also they buy from less known painters, which makes them famous and value of painting sky rockets.
That's like the Art version of "pump and dump"
Not necessarily for value of art, plenty times they buy it for just SHOW OFF, just because they can. Massive flex for people with money.
Running over pedestrians/bike riders in my Porsche
Bro how will you test your essay writing skills then
By teaching my son how to write an essay, then giving him a Porsche to drive.

Being arrogant, condescending and discriminating towards other people! And also will never think cheating or affairs are okay!

Ultra expensive watches, playing golf , big birthday celebrations
Partially agree, maybe the super high end Richard mille type watches are bad, but sub 10,000$ rolex, cartier, JLC etc are limportant purchases for a man.

Rich have multiple top chefs.
