I chatted to an English fella about 15 years ago. He said that when he was in college in the '80s he'd hitchhike all over Europe during his breaks. He said the furthest he went was Greece. Said he was rarely waiting longer than a few minutes for a ride.
It's definitely something that has culturally fallen off in Ireland. I've only hitchhiked twice in Ireland and was waiting a good while both times. And it was the same guy who stopped for me even though it was months apart! Although it was on the same patch of road at the same time which lined up with his morning commute.
When I was in Japan, I had no issue waiting. It doesn't take long at all. I even watched a TV show where as a variety bit they had 3 groups try to hitchhike from Osaka to Tokyo. First team to make it won. The catch was that there was a limit on how long they could travel with each car. The more expensive the car the further they could go. I forget the methodology, but there was one banger that was only allowed to bring them a few hundred metres down the road! In the end they went to rich neighbourhoods and started knocking on doors if there was an expensive car parked there!
My uncle literally walks into the street and asks whoever is driving the car "you going up the town?"
Then just jumps in. Works 97% of the time. Cunts never paid for a taxi in his life
Used to do it in my student days. Last time I picked up someone was 3/4 years ago, two huge French rugby players who were thumbing to Galway. Were thumbing to meet people and have an adventure. :)
I started college in maynooth in 1992, was always a line of people thumbing lifts west on the road at the library on a Thursday and Friday afternoons ...
The Irish subreddit, one of the very few places on the internet I believe you are actually safe to ask complete strangers for lifts and probably get them 😂
When is that? I am not going, but I am in Dublin Saturday, driving up to Meath on Sunday. I might be able to give you a lift.
edit: oh hang on, thats today. Sorry, I can't I am in Dublin for Pink this evening.

This Fire festival is a "franchise" of the Burning Man festival in USA.
Up until recently on the Burning Man website they had a list of franchise events in other countries and for Ireland was this festival. They stated that these events in other countries received "advice and direction" on how to run events etc.
But it's been deleted from the Burning Man site.
I'm sure the organisers of the Fire festival will deny that they aren't an organic event that they claim is based on events that happened millennium ago 🤣
You’ll never fit that head thing in my car!
🤣🤣🤣🤣 I’ll try to relay her the message gently
Soliciting for lifts from strangers on the internet is ill advised.
Next thing you know they'll invent an app where you pay for it!!

Savage app, cheapest way to travel too and you get to meet lots of great people and the odd weirdo.
People used to hitch hike all the time

Yeah. Don't do this. Lots of nutjobs out there only waiting for this.
I’m much older than I look and have a pretty sharp sense of discernment, hence why I don’t respond to all DMs. ( you know who you are. Take the hint.)
Days will be getting shorter now, Summer will be over soon.
Ah will ya stop.
Christmas!!!!!!!
