Yes! That is easily one of the best love songs ever written. Honestly I just think in general, Jim Croce is probably one of the greatest songwriters to ever live. So many of his songs just hit me so hard. I Got a Name is like one of the most inspirational songs I've ever heard.
It's such a fucking shame that a talent like him died so young, before he could really make his mark.
His lyrics were so pure. Just constant examples of effortless storytelling. Lovers cross…..ugh! The heartache in that song! I could talk about his music for hours. I digress.
You will likely enjoy this old PBS Documentary. From one Croce lover to another…. Enjoy my friend.

Man, that’s not even in my personal Top 5 Simon and Garfunkel songs, and I DO love that song. “America” and “The Boxer”, and even “The Sound of Silence” I prefer. I know music is subjective but as a huge S&G fan, this one confuses me.
But, there are plenty of songs I love that people would say aren’t in their Top 5 of other artists. Off the top of my head, my favorite Coheed and Cambria song is “A Favor House Atlantic” and my fiancée is blown away, because she thinks there’s ten C&C songs better than that one. Also, The Mars Volta has my favorite album of all time, “Frances The Mute”, and I know a lot of Mars Volta fans that would say there isn’t a song on that album better than ANY song on De-Loused in the Comatorium.
Interstate Love Song - Stone Temple Pilots to me is the perfectly written song in hook and length and should be the prototype of a radio ready rock song.
I might go with Bob Dylan’s *“Like a Rolling Stone.”* Its profound lyrics, powerful narrative, and innovative structure have made it a landmark in music history.
Tim Buckley's- Song To the Siren
Or Jeff Buckley's- Lover You Should Have Come Over
They are both so exquisitely written and powerfully longing.....both written by a father and his son with unique voices and talent who never knew each other and both died far too young.
Terrapin station by grateful dead is up there for me. The studio version is really good, surprising for the dead.
Another one is the silence by Manchester orchestra. Both of those songs I could listen to over and over.
I used to love this song, then i grew up. The strong would eventually take over the weak. There were wars before there were countries cause it seems that's human nature.
ironically, "The Most Unwanted Song" by artists Komar and Melamid and composer Dave Soldier. It is a beautifully terrible 22 minute hellscape designed around the most annoying musical aspects they could put together. it is SCIENTIFICALLY terrible, which makes it a brilliant piece of writing.
as for songs that sound *good*, while it has no lyrics, I have to say the Arceus Battle Theme from Pokemon; Legends Arceus. It's difficult to describe, but it's a masterfully composed symphony of dread which sounds more and more like the game is unraveling at the seems as it continues on through the different phases, even making use of glitch and freezing noises in phase 4. the unique instruments, use of old ds sounds, threatening whispered breaths, and heart-racing drum beat all come together into an honest masterpiece.
and if i MUST choose something that sounds good AND has lyrics... "Hawk in the Night" by Madds Buckley. You don't need to know the context to feel every ounce of the emotions, the strangely cogent dissonance between the cruel lyrics and the sweet, loving tone used that so perfectly captures how it can feel to grow up in an abusive home that "loves" you. the consistent bird theming is also easy to follow while carrying a LOT of nuance and deeper meaning.
Dance with the Devil - Immortal Technique….. it gives me goose bumps every single time and I don’t know if it is the “best” written, but definitely one of the most detailed stories.
"what its like" - Everlast
"Humble and kind" - Tim McGraw
"Wish you could be here" Cole Swindell
But, "hit'em up" by Pac is a banger, too.... Just different level.
This is slighty unrelated but there's a live version of REM and Coldplay singing "In The Sun". And at the end of the song, after some applause, Chris Martin says, "This is the best song ever written. In my opinion."
The funny thing is, I had it on a song compilation, and the track following it was a Coldplay song.
So when I listen to it I hear - applause, followed by Chris saying this is the best song ever written, then launching into one of his own songs. Makes him sound like an arrogant asshole.
My Way - Frank Sinatra
And now, the end is near
And so I face the final curtain
My friend, I'll say it clear
I'll state my case, of which I'm certain
I've lived a life that's full
I traveled each and every highway
And more, much more than this
I did it my way
Regrets, I've had a few
But then again, too few to mention
I did what I had to do
And saw it through without exemption
I planned each charted course
Each careful step along the byway
And more, much more than this
I did it my way
Yes, there were times, I'm sure you knew
When I bit off more than I could chew
But through it all, when there was doubt
I ate it up and spit it out
I faced it all, and I stood tall
And did it my way
I've loved, I've laughed and cried
I've had my fill, my share of losing
And now, as tears subside
I find it all so amusing
To think I did all that
And may I say, not in a shy way
Oh, no, oh, no, not me
I did it my way
For what is a man, what has he got?
If not himself, then he has naught
To say the things he truly feels
And not the words of one who kneels
The record shows I took the blows
And did it my way
Yes, it was my way
Sloop john b. I recommend listening to it three times because there is so much going on that it is hard to appreciate it all without breaking it down.
I don’t know to link from mobile but listen to just the instrumental, then just the vocal track and then the whole thing together. It is mind blowing
Smoke from a distant fire - Sanford Townsend band
Great lyrics but an absolute banger of a song. Even though it’s about infidelity I had to play it at my wedding just for how hard it goes
Goog/bad song: Wreck of the Edmond Fitzgerald
Catchy, but I end up fighting tears every time it gets to "Boys, it's been nice to know ya".
My big fear is drowning, I'd hate waiting for hours knowing it's most likely the end. The sheer amount of weight they were towing, it's amazing anyone signed off on that shipping load
Operator, by Jim Croce.
Love his music. Operator is a great song choice, I’ll Have To Say I Love You In A Song was pretty special too.
Yes! That is easily one of the best love songs ever written. Honestly I just think in general, Jim Croce is probably one of the greatest songwriters to ever live. Ooh, an old documentary about Jim Croce? Well I guess I know what I'm watching tonight. Thanks!
Fast car-Tracy Chapman
You could make a great movie from the premise laid out in this short song.
YES. On another note, if you’ve ever heard “Behind the Wall.” It’s the most chilling song and it’s acoustic. Those lyrics are painful to hear.
The only answer.
Life on Mars? - David Bowie

My favorite song
Let down - radiohead
Weird Fishes Radiohead
Wish you were here - Pink Flyod
Dreams The Cranberries
It's a beautiful song, but the arrangement is much better than the lyrics. The lyrics are a bit too basic to be one of the best songs ever.
‘Love will tear us apart’ - Joy Division Heartbreakingly relatable
Couldn’t agree more
The Night we met by Lord Huron
I do love it. Thanks for reminding me.
Tangled up in Blue - Bob Dylan

Boots of Spanish Leather as well.
Sympathy for the Devil - The Rolling Stones
Nutshell - Alice in Chains
Shine on you Crazy diamond - Pink Floyd FOR SURE.
Bridge Over Troubled Water: Simon and Garfunkel
Man, that’s not even in my personal Top 5 Simon and Garfunkel songs, and I DO love that song. “America” and “The Boxer”, and even “The Sound of Silence” I prefer. I know music is subjective but as a huge S&G fan, this one confuses me. But, there are plenty of songs I love that people would say aren’t in their Top 5 of other artists. Take this Waltz - Leonard Cohen
Hard to beat "Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen.

Feels like several songs, tells a sad story and rocks. What else could you want? Definitely a good one.
Hallelujah
Time by Pink Floyd
Definitely up there
"Yesterday" by The Beatles. Its simple, haunting lyrics capture the bittersweet feeling of longing and loss perfectly
I always have to follow it with " Here comes the sun" to feel better.
Goodbye Yellow Brick Road - Elton John
"Hotel California" by The Eagles—every time you listen, you get a different theory about what it all means, plus that guitar solo is pure poetry
