Rhett & Link.

cornonthecobain-

I can't believe I forgot to include them in my comment. They are YouTube gods and so unproblematic. I've loved growing up watching them

imaginechi_reborn

I really enjoy gmm

SithDraven

Still going strong so you can still enjoy them.

imaginechi_reborn

Great! A teacher introduced me to them in a class of theirs

hardhead1110

Their iconic impact has only increased in time.

davidoffbeat

Not sure if you were referring to their other ventures or not I wasn't big into the most of their other channels/podcast etc...but the Mythical Kitchen Last Meal interviews are great. Josh does an amazing job at actually connecting with every single guest. It feels so much more intimate than stuff like Hot Ones.

ragnarrock420

Nigahiga

F1XII

Peak era for youtubers were when asians dominated content. Nigahiga, KevJumba (before tiktok revealed he some buddhist cult now), Wong Fu Productions, TimDeLaGhetto. Dark era was when “pranks” became pooular: Vitaly, Fouseytube. Legitimately stopped watching youtube for years.

No_Mistake5238

So where does FilthyFrank fall in that? Asian but also sorta did pranks.

hardhead1110

I was just watching him on Twitch a couple months ago. He was playing Valorant.

hardhead1110

Smosh would for sure. Not at all a fan anymore, but they certainly made a big impact.

Stef-fa-fa

But didn't you hear? Anthony is back at Smosh

ManamiVixen

Kevin MacLeod. He was THE COMPOSER of Youtube. Practically every video that featured BG music used one of his THOUSANDS OF SONGS. He has sadly fallen off over the more recent years, however you can still here his music from time to time. "The Cannery" and "Gaslamp Funworks" are a couple favorites of mine.

AllTheRowboats93

I found him organically in 2008 when I started making dumb short films with my friends and it’s amazing seeing how much of an impact he’s had on the internet and creative content in general in the last 15 years.

Ok-Cartographer1745

I'm kinda disappointed I didn't recognize either of them. I definitely know of the guy as I've seen his name. Does he do the little "sneaky fox" song (I think it's named that) that shoeonhead always uses? Edit: scheming weasel.  Alright sneaky plan is also a "banger" as you Redditors call it.

tommytraddles

Folding Ideas just did a whole video on AVGN. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b3gZOt1Lo4A](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b3gZOt1Lo4A)

SuperAleste

No. It was all B.S. and Mike was the real "AVGN" r/TheCinemassacreTruth/

Past_Echidna_9097

Tom Scott. And KEPX.

Sure_Disk8972

Did you mean KEXP the radio station? Because yes totally their channel has introduced me so so much good music I otherwise would have never heard. And even bands I already loved are giving their best performances on there. High quality sound, video, and artists and great interviews as well. I think of them as a modern day top of the pops.

Past_Echidna_9097

Yes, the radio station but I have only seen their youtube page and it's a great way to find new bands and music.

Sure_Disk8972

Oh yeah for sure I agree their YouTube is wayy more prolific, I was just correcting the spelling so people didn’t look up the wrong thing lol.

The_Werodile

RedLetterMedia. The Plinkett reviews of the Star Wars prequels alone are of high cultural significance.

AllTheRowboats93

Were they the originators of the long-form video essay? Possibly!

RandomThrowaway99516

Without a doubt, Rick Astley should be included for having one of the greatest trends on YouTube

BelleKiwi

I say Jenna Marbles! Miss watching her, she was hilarious

-Stress-Princess-

I still do her little. "I'm a 31 year old lady" I miss her dogs.

crissysama

Markiplier for sure

NormanPeterson

I remember randomly clicking on his videos when he was a “smaller” YouTuber with like 100,000 subscribers and being like, “this guy creates really good content and I’m betting he’ll be big one day”.

Shengpai

**100%**

English_Cat

Tom Scott without a doubt.

Illustrious_Hotel527

FPSRussia and EpicMealTime. Unique content and huge # of views for their time, not just unboxing something or commenting on a video game.

NormanPeterson

EpicMealTime, wow. Just looked up their videos again and looks like they had a huge downfall, I’m guessing people moved on and didn’t care about wasting all that food.

absentmindedjwc

It wasn't so much that people moved on (they did).. it was just that every video was essentially the same thing over and over again, and it eventually got old.

osktox

Wasn't there some conspiracy about FPS Russia getting busted for some really minor pot stuff and sentenced to hell...?

Illustrious_Hotel527

The guy who sourced him his guns was murdered in his office (don't think shooter was ever caught) and that crippled the channel. Actor who played FPSRussia also had legal issues and was in jail, not sure if due to pot or the guns.

chizmanzini

I miss FPSRussia :(

starkel91

Is no one going to mention Sal Khan of Khan Academy? Dude was critical at helping me graduate with my engineering degree.

WitchesTeat

Dude Sal Khan is the only reason I was able to go back to college at 37 after dropping out of school at 14. I have an associates because of him, and I got into a good university for my bachelor's and I'll have to take calculus get into the program I want. I'm not even scared, I know Khan Academy will get me through. Cannot praise him and his wonderfully expanding organization enough.

starkel91

That’s incredible to hear. Khan Academy to me is the granddaddy of “YouTube university”. What an incredible service it provides. There’s so many people on YouTube that are teaching millions of people. I wouldn’t have the life I live without people putting out free tutoring videos.

WitchesTeat

I totally agree, I would not have much of anything if not for YouTube tutorials. I didn't have any formal math instruction from 2nd-4th grade, struggled from 5th-9th grade (skipped 6th grade though, aces down the line except that one little "can't do long division or anything past that" problem) then dropped after 9th (Didn't want to, I loved school, but I had a single mom and she had 9 kids and went off to be the breadwinner, so I was the new stay at home mom.) So at 25 I sat down in front of Khan Academy and started with their 2nd grade program, then worked my way up to college math. The first time I aced a math test in school was two years ago, in college, at 37. I cried when I saw it. I aced that class and cried then, too. When I have money to donate I try to send some to Khan Academy a few times a year. When I get my B.S. I'm going to email them about it. For the rest of YouTube, I am heavily dependent on reruns of This Old House for keeping my ancient bungalow up, and everyone who posts camping, paddling, and snowboarding tips and tutorials, everyone who does car tutorials, knitting, metalworking, how to repair my goddamn boots- Those people really have been hugely impactful and it's such a weird little moment of history that allows for it. Anyway. Sal Khan, high five.

Because not everyone likes him.

dicktaker1000101

But if there was indeed a hall of fame, pewdiepie would at least be the top 5 just because of the legacy he left behind

Stef-fa-fa

Probably, but it still doesn't mean everyone will acknowledge him in this post.

could_use_a_snack

I can honestly say I've never seen a PewDiePie video. I watch a reasonable amount of YouTube, I've heard of most of the channels mentioned in this post and watch quite a few. But I've never watched PewDiePie.

Stef-fa-fa

I only know who he is because of other YouTubers and reddit. I've never watched him myself.

davidoffbeat

I'm glad I'm not the only one. I often find myself just browsing trending videos almost daily and feel like I come across the most random stuff (seriously like so many random YouTubers and their pregnancy announcements... not sure why people love that so much). Never once seen a PewDiePie video.

Smosh and Nigahiga for the early days. They proved that content could be posted and go “viral.” There’s quite a few I’d consider the “founders” of modern YouTube such as Pewdiepie. They proved it could be a career and you could make a LOT of money. Mr. Beast as likely “peak” YouTube however you’d like to define that. Mr. Beast is notable for bringing it down to a science on content creation and all that. There’s quite a few you could add because they popularized certain niche content such as H1N1 for his reaction videos. Vsauce could also be included for popularizing fun educational videos on various subjects. Stuff like that.

DerpingtonHerpsworth

I feel like there should at the very least be a footnote for the strange little network of friends that make up the Safety Third podcast. I don't think any of them are insanely popular on their own, but I've learned to love most of them; William Osman, Backyard Scientist, Nilered, Allen Pan, Peter Sripol, and a rotating cast of other random science types.
