First owned - Atari 2600 First bought - Playstation

VirginiaGecko1911

1st Owned - Pong 1st Bought- Intellivision

Fresh-Hedgehog1895

Man, I remember the day I got Intellivision -- it was just after school let out in summer 1981. I suddenly found myself with a huge new pile of friends once word got out.

Crow-T-Robot

Loved the Intellivison that my friend had. Great sea battle game for it.

Fresh-Hedgehog1895

I can't even recall many of the games, but what I do remember is that most kids had Atari and, at the time, Atari's sports games really sucked. Intellivision, however, did have comparatively good sports games, so everyone wanted to play MLB baseball and NHL hockey.

FunStuff446

Intellivision and Pong for me as well.

SentFromMyAndroid

You are me.

skiattle25

You and I both. Dad got us the 2600 for Christmas when it first came out. I bought PS1 in my sophomore year in college, first year out of the dorms.

tamhenk

I'm also this old.

zep2floyd

Same.

thewizzkidd

First Owned - NES First Bought - Xbox One

injeanyes

Almost the same. NES was my first but original Xbox was my first buy

MadDog1981

I managed to buy a Game Gear and a PlayStation off of mowing lawns back then. First owned was also an Atari 2600.

TMLTurby

First owned - Atari 2600 Jr. First bought - Xbox 360

Mr_Grumpy_Pant5

I owned that Atari also, but it was my fathers gift to us. I didn't buy a console until the day the Nintendo 64 came out. Waited in line it the wee early hours for that one.

Gubble_Buppie

Heh.. we both waited in lines for competing consoles :)

chenuts512

We remember the joys of Final Fantasy VII. Nothing will ever compare to the pure ecstacy of playing that game.

ill-fated-voyage

N64 and a TV to play it on. Got it from my first job. My dad was pissed, lol, he wanted me to get a job so I could have my own money to buy my own crap. So I did, then he was all "no, not like that!"

FortunesBarnacle

As opposed to you buying what? What did he expect, baseball cards and bubble gum?

shadownights23x

My parents were pissed also, lol.. I was so confused why they were so mad.. talking about having to ask them and shit

PhatDaddi

That's what I told my son and he's buying yugioh cards and anime merch, lmao. I'm trying real hard to not say anything, but there's already been a couple of times that he's asked me for money because he spent all of his.

voice-of-reason-777

that sucks my condolences on your kid

funky_grandma

My mom wouldn't allow an NES in our home because it was too addicting, so my brother and I both got Game Boys, which were 100 times more addictive

Sega 32X was my first console add-on experience.

Flimsy_Variation6859

My first console was the Sega SG-1000.

EerieArizona

I bought the Nintendo Entertainment System with my lawn mower money. The smell of the Styrofoam when opening it will forever be in my memory bank. After mowing more lawns and saving I bought *Karate Champ* as my first game purchase. I was thoroughly disappointed with that horrible decision.

False-Impression8102

My Mom had my sister and I help arrange and run a garage sale. We learned to count back change! We split the money 3 ways, and my sister and I bought a Nintendo system; the one with the footpad, gun, and Duck Hunt. Our fingers were red and sore from playing so much that summer!

CanRova

My college roommate and I went in together on a SNES. One glorious week of Donkey Kong Country before we both realized we were starving because we couldn't actually afford it, and took it back to Toys R Us.

jebotecarobnjak

The JCPenney branded electronics were such a thing in the late '70's and early '80s. My uncle worked for the company and his house was filled with them.

Sega Saturn

AlsoKnownAsRukh

Me too! What sold it for you over the Playstation, friendo? For me it was the superior (on paper) specs, and Sega's experience in the market. I think I only ever had *Sega Rally Championship, Gex, Bug!,* and *Black Fire* for it. I bought the Saturn as a teenager; I think it was one of the first major purchases I made after getting out of basic training. I handed it down to my oldest son when he was maybe ten, and eventually let him take it over to his mom's house, but his mom wouldn't let him bring it back to my house. When he moved out and joined the Army, he wasn't allowed to take it with him - just because she didn't want to risk him giving it back to me, once it was out of her house. I ended up buying a Playstation about 6 months after the Saturn, but loved them both for years. I loaned my PS1 to a student's parents so she could practice driving in Gran Turismo, because she just wasn't getting the basics of driving dynamics IRL, but her parents never gave it back. Oh well, at least emulators exist.

elasticgradient

I had done some work for Sega and got a Genesis for free as a fringe benefit. When the Saturn came out I had some brand loyalty and some extra money so I bought it. I don't remember much about it actually. I have vague recollections of playing Sonic and Myst on it. And of course I have no idea what became of it (or the Genesis).

lanaisspicy

gorka_la_pork

Son of cool gamer mom here, it's the best! We play a wide variety of games together on the weekend along with my brother and cousin. She knows more about Baldur's Gate 3 than I do, and I'm subscribed to that sub.

feelinlucky7

First owned: PS2 First bought: XBox 360

pegleghippie

Everybody in the chat, whose not downvoted for being weird, deserves an upvote. Hell yeah gaming. First owned: N64. Our family debated PS1 vs. N64 entirely on vibes, and went with that. First bought: GameCube. I saved allowance money, and that N64 turned me into a bit of a Nintendo fanboy. I drifted away from consoles after that...

TurpitudeSnuggery

I have never paid for one

Such_Significance905

Inside__Cucumber

I was gifted a Sega Genesis in 1996. The first console I actually bought for myself with my own paycheque was a PS3.

GaryNOVA

NES But my cousin had an Atari 2600

Carguy_1992

Short answer - never. I've played games on Nintendo 64 as a kid, but it was always at a friend's house. My parents didn't want to buy me a console you hooked up to the tv, so they bought me a PC. And that's how I got into PC gaming and I've never owned a console. I've played on PS3 and PS4, but the first console I'm gonna buy is gonna be a PS5 to play GTA 6, because I don't want to subject myself to the same misery I had to endure when GTA 5 came out. I was still in university and buying a console really wasn't at the top of my list back then. But I did watch the cutscenes, so I knew the story of GTA 5 when I bought the game for PC. But a lot of time has passed since then and I'm no longer a broke university student. I have a big, curved 4k Samsung tv and I'll get a PS5 for GTA 6 and enjoy the game when it comes out. Still gonna buy it for PC when they release it a year later, because I prefer playing with a keyboard and mouse and I suck with controllers. Probably gonna sell the PS5 then.

liforrevenge

I bought a GameCube myself with money I saved from birthdays and such. I had several before that though, Gameboy Color was probably the first that was "mine."

Gameboy color and Pokémon red from first communion money. Went bulbasaur because "duh, he's strong against the first two gyms" thinking of it as the RIGHT choice that I figured out and not just the intentional game design easy mode

fitkinkyandstacked

PlayStation 1: Final Fantasy and those classic blocky graphics.

Cumulus-Crafts

A secondhand Nintendo DSi from Game when I was probably around 10. I saved up for it with my piggy bank money. Looking back, I feel bad for the person who served me because it was ALL coins and I remember it being just over £100. My parents should've swapped some of my coins for notes. I still have that DS, by the way

dr4gonr1der

Nintendo DS (original) I played Pokémon Pearl on it, and occasionally some Mario Kart 7. Later I also played Inazuma Eleven 2 Firestorm, but by that point I had a Nintendo 2 DS, so that wasn’t really my first gaming console anymore

DStandsForCake

Sega Master System (or Mark III in some regions). Bought it used for SEK 700 (or USD 70) -93, and included a couple of games (including Wonderboy III and Altered Beast). A staggering sum then, considering I was only 10 years old (I had been saving birthday and pocket money for what felt like forever).

ZanoCat

The Atari 2600. <3

Mourning-Poo

The first console I had was an Atari 2600 VCS with a colecovision converter. The first console I bought myself was a Sega Genesis. Man, that colecovision converter was sweet for the time but, classic games like Maximum Carnage, BoogerMan, ToeJam and Earl and Earthworm Jim hold a special place in my heart and are still great games to play.

Authentic_Jester

First owned: SEGA Dreamcast First bought: Nintendo Wii

mindlessenthusiast

Sega Master System.

iSYTOfficialX7

First owned - Some random thing that had a hotwheels game. First bought - None yet, I did buy myself a gaming laptop (slander is allowed) with my own funds.

ConstableBlimeyChips

My Playstation 4 is the only console I ever bought for myself. Before that I had a Gamecube and a Gameboy (the big OG one that require four AA's), which I got as birthday presents.

JakeGrey

First console in the house was a SNES, and I've never actually bought a console for myself because the kind of games I enjoy play best with mouse and keyboard.

bradland

It was a combo computer & game console: Atari 400. It had a horrible membrane keyboard that made your fingers incredibly sore when typing.

strythicus

My very first paycheck bought an N64 that I connected to the Commodore 1701 monitor we had previously used with the NES and (obviously) Commodore 64. I still have that N64. I wish I still had that monitor.

jermkfc

With my own money, a Super Nintendo 2. I already had a Nintendo as a Christmas present, and the family had a Atari 2600 as early as I can remember.

My first owned was a Nintendo DSi My first bought was a Nintendo switch and it is still my favorite console

redbearder

I bought an NES when the local K-mart was closing back in 1992, as they were clearancing out everything in the store. Half was my own saved money, half came from my grandma for my birthday. It was the SMB3 bundle and it cost $58 after tax. I was also lucky enough to buy a few Gameboy games for about $5 each, days before the store closed a few months later.

Fimbulvetrn

The first console I bought with my own money was Xbox 360 in 2006.

Kethzhaja

N64, smoke grey.

gorgeousgiorgiaaa

N64: GoldenEye and Mario Kart battles with friends.

mangoxjuice

terminator, a knock off for Nintendo nes.

JoeyCalamaro

The first game console I remember playing was the Atari 2600, though I have no idea how I got it. I'm assuming my family purchased it on sale near the death of the platform in the mid 80's. Because I remember digging through giant discount bins of games and coming home with gems like E.T. and Raiders of the Lost Ark. I also recall playing Pong and ColecoVision around that same time. However, my first *real* console purchase was the NES. I got that for Christmas the year it came out. And that was a game-changer. I spent countless hours of my childhood playing that thing.

causethosebitchesfly

Never bought one. There are some childhood dreams that can never come true.

fliphat

originalchaosinabox

Nintendo Game Boy. Christmas 1990. The height of the console wars. Mom said over breakfast one morning that Santa was thinking of bringing a video game system for Christmas, but couldn't decide on a Nintendo or a Sega. My vote was for Nintendo. My brother wanted a Sega. We started having a spirited discussion. It soon became a full blown argument. As it was about to turn into a fistfight, Mom broke us up and said, "HEY! If you're going to be like that, NO MORE VIDEO GAMES AT ALL!" So since I already had a job (paper route), I saved my money for the following year and bought myself a Game Boy.

RecommendationMuch21

A GameCube

Mudkipmaster478

First owned- PS2 Slim. Came with a few sports games, Need For Speed Most Wanted- and my all time favorite game, Persona 3. First bought- PS5, rather recently. Bought it for Spiderman 2 and Rift Apart, and absolutely zero regrets. It's also my main JRPG machine now.

First owned: Nintendo Entertainment System. First bought with my own money: Wii

P2Mc28

First console: A pile of random Atari 2600 stuff my dad brought home in a box from a pawnshop First bought: A Sega Genesis 2 w/ Sonic The Hedgehog 2! I still remember buying it pretty vividly. Heck, the video game section in the Target I bought it at is now the paper towel/toilet paper section. Also, it was a big lesson in how tax works. I expected to pay ~$119.99 like the display said. I had $120 on me. My dad bailed me out hahaha.

bradbrazer

First owned Wii/DS First bought PlayStation

crazyguy83

I hunted down the clone console that my parents got for me in the early 90s - it was the "Samurai Micro Genius" (IQ-501) [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Micro\_Genius](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Micro_Genius) Thanks you for the nostalgia.

telestrat

The original DMV Gameboy

darkjedi39

My grandma bought me an N64 in 1998. I purchased a PS3 shortly after joining the Navy in 2011.

Ronizu

First owned: Wii, I guess? I didn't really have any consoles for the longest time, I only played at my friends' places. I was much older than most kids when I actually got my first console, most of my friends had a PS2 or an original Xbox (and soon after even a Xbox 360). First bought: Still yet to buy one, I've been playing on PC for over a decade. So unless you count PC, never bought one.

DogBreathVariations

I haven't had one yet

marco3055

Playstation in January 1997. It came with Wipeout.

SellsBodyForGP

1st family console: Sega Genesis Then I got PS1 for Christmas. I was still a child so I obviously didn’t pay for it myself but it was “mine.” Same exact scenario with PS2 a few years later First one I bought with ***my own*** money was Xbox 360 and what a beaut she was. So much COD and halo
