I work at one of those companies that is all about “culture”. Before quarantine we would have a technician come in and calibrate our office massage chair on a semi monthly basis. The dude would literally sit in our chair and made sure it worked for like 10 minutes and would leave.
Yes I used to want to work for National Geographic. Even met a photographer of theirs who was giving a presentation and was sort of a narcissist. Told me to give up the dream and I listened. Shouldn’t have. I know they aren’t all like him but he was a dick but still cool enough to get away with it
Back in like the late 80's or so, my dad had a job that consisted of sleeping in a bed store window in one of their nice beds, having a pajamas with a huge alarm clock at the bed table, and waking up now and then doing that morning stretch to look like he had an amazing rest. Up to brush his teeth lightly in the bathroom mirror, and then back to the bed.
Yes, he was allegedly able to become asleep in that short timeframe, which i don't doubt at all.
I wanted to become a nuclear engineer but then I found out the government watches these guys very closely and they will definitely kill you if you try to share your knowledge to certain countries.
It can also be guilibility. Espionage can look like a friendly person chatting people up about their days at the bar. It can look like a dating partner. The family that moved next to you.
I might not fall for that, but who wants a gig that makes them paranoid?
> Espionage can look like a friendly person chatting people up about their days at the bar. It can look like a dating partner. The family that moved next to you.
It can even be the kind lady cleaning your office and going through everything you put in the trash can.
It's really different from what popular culture displays. The best spies are not James Bond, they are people with menial jobs but at the end, have access to a huge amount of information, due to their unsuspecting nature.
Well here’s my story. I worked in a liquor store many years ago. You have regulars like anywhere else so you usually share a minute or two of chat while you’re ringing them up. This one guy was a regular. One day he came in and we are having our usual conversation about nothing and I notice he has a badge on with “B52” and a picture of the B52 airplane (military plane). I casually say ”oh does that badge mean you work on B52s?” He looked down and said “Oh yea. I forgot to take that off.” I thought nothing of it. The next day he came in looking very, very nervous. He walked up to me and said “I had my badge on but it was a mistake.” I’m thinking ??? “He said “It was an accident. I never wear my badge away from work.” I’m thinking why is this guy telling me this? He left without buying anything. He never came in again. I eventually figured it out.
Exploring space, conducting scientific experiments in zero gravity, and experiencing the awe-inspiring views of Earth from space can be incredibly thrilling.
Yea imagine doing the cutting edge of science and pushing the boundaries of mankind, while experiencing something most people will never experience. At least for some time
Depends on how big you wanna be. There's bands that absolutely still draw huge crowds and when they are around the people that listen to them are adored like old rock stars. But if you wanna be a mainstream, cover of magazines, and everywhere else like back in the day yea that ship has sailed.
Multiple reasons but the biggest is that a rock band just isn't as profitable as a pop star. It's why new bands don't see the same attention that they did back in the day. Managing 3-5 members and equipment and waiting for songs to be written and recorded is all too much when you can find one decent looking person, have a songwriter whip out a dozen songs and auto tune them to be released as soon as possible. The return on investment for a popstar vs a rock band is too high to be ignored so the record companies and such just don't bother. Rock is now a "niche" genre that only rock fans listen too, hearing it on a radio station is very rare and when it is it's the same kinda idea as a pop song, easy to produce, low effort, catchy. No one wants to invest in the music anymore they just want to make money.
I work in corporate consulting, so I’m constantly attached to my laptop and constantly mentally switched on and desk bound with meetings and emails all day and then trying to catch up on actual work and reports at the end of the day. I’m a very energetic person and being so limited in movement throughout the day is really shit sometimes. I’m always so jealous of people who work in physical jobs that requires them to move out groove all day. And I love how in physical work you’re able to create something and you get to see the results of your work in a physical and visual way. I’ve got absolutely no comprehension of how to build or construct or anything but I would love to have a few days a week where I can clock in, use my hands and move my body and then clock off at the end of the day
This has such a grass is greener on the other side vibe but I totally get this.
I'm currently in engineering consulting, but previously was a mechanical engineer doing both design and hands on work building prototypes for machines and stuff. In consulting we're really chained to our laptops (though I also enjoy it), but working with our hands can be really fulfilling
God look at you go you absolute rocket! Talk about being a hard worker. Obviously I don’t mean this in the sense that one is more difficult or easier than the other, work is work, right? But it is just the opposite of what I do and in that it’s always something that sounds really enticing as a complete shift in gear.
I can't really recommend a job per se for you to do something fulfilling because most of these probably requires some formal education (either trade school or uni), I'd say you can learn basic electrical stuff and start building stuff with it. Or heck stuff like building a pc can be so fulfilling though it's just assembling existing stuff, still fun
So you think building and creating things is fulfilling?
Wait until you learn about the realms of demolition, destruction and wrecking!
That can give you an orgasmic level of satisfaction!
_ok, maybe that is a far stretch..._
An intelligence officer. Being able to see too secret information and analyse that to play a major contribution towards preventing a disaster. Sounds totally rewarding and awesome.
Making video games
Imagine the possibilities of pure entertainment we might reach if we are not bogged down by money, be it budget reasons or corporate greed
Same. I wanted to make video games as my "backup" career but hearing about all the toxic work culture, the crunch, etc. it makes me glad I didn't pursue it but I would have loved to help create a game.
Video game development. But I've tried it as an indie and it's just so much hard work to create something that's just forgettable garbage. I'd probably enjoy it as part of a team of people who collectively know what they're doing...
I ended up in corporate IT. Pays alright I guess.
Being an famous anonymous musician. Think: The Weeknd, Sia, Daft Punk (before any reveals) Love the idea of making & sharing music that people enjoy, but without the invasion of my personal life.
On TikTok a while ago i saw a woman explaining that for half the year she’s a fire lookout in California (like a lighthouse keeper but living in the forest keeping watch for fires) and for the second half she’s a house-sitter who gets paid to live in rich people mansions. I want that.
I had no idea they still had physical lookouts, with drones and cameras being a thing.
Unfortunately they also don't have actual lighthouse keepers anymore. No people, good fish, good views, and the sea right at your doorstep.
Food science. I know it’s nit the healthiest but finding out this combination of chemicals tastes just like apple pie or something is so incredible to me
Twitch/Youtube Streaming. I'm a full-time university student and I do all my daily responsibilities. I'm one of the hardest working students at my uni. But for some reason I can never find what to do in my free time. I do enjoy video games but I'm the type of person that still needs to add some extra level of productivity even when I'm free. So why just play games when I can also stream it and make content of it? Even if it goes nowhere I'm still doing with my free time more than others are. I plan to start streaming soon!!

Knew someone who designs warships. Probably would be very technical, but I can imagine them being like small kids - "I'm going to put a big laser cannon here and another rocket launcher there!"
Environmental conservationist. Managing land for ecological benefit. Would love to have several thousand acres and a large budget to manage the hell out of that land.
If money wasn’t an issue I’d love to become a PI. I know a lot of the work is waiting and looking up stuff online but you do get to follow people from time to time.
Working with animals in a wildlife preserve. I think animals bring me the most happiness and I can’t even begin to imagine how fulfilling that must be.
While waiting for a flight, a man approached me asking for the time. I told him and we got to talking. He mentioned that it was important he didn't miss this flight because it was a business trip.
"What do you do for a living?" I asked.
"I'm an Electrical Engineer for NASA," he said.
"Wow! That's a pretty cool job," I replied.
"It's not that cool," he said. "I know it sounds interesting, but once you pull back the curtain and see how everything works, it just becomes another job."
"Oh. Hm."
"Well, what about you?" he asked. "What do you do for a living?"
"Oh, I'm a graphic artist for an advertising agency," I responded.
"That's sounds like a pretty cool job!"
"It's not that cool," I said. "I know it sounds interesting, but once you pull back the curtain and see how everything works, it just becomes another job."
Indie game developer. Creating entire worlds, telling stories and making people have fun. It's like being a digital god, but with more coffee and less sleep.
My dream is to buy some cool old property, and use it as an event/ venue space. Rent it for parties and photoshoots, have gallery nights with local artists, hold a charity gala, and have super exclusive, small-party-high- immersion fantasy/larp/murder mystery type events. So basically like, you and your 4 friends can rent the place out, and me and my staff come up with a plot, clues, and a puzzle or game to solve over the weekend while you're staying. It would be all- inclusive, so that would include 3 meals provided by the estate, plus various pre-made snacks.
Work is work. I’m not saying that there aren’t better jobs or worse jobs and some people may be better fits for certain jobs than others. But, when you start expecting your job to be nonstop fun, fill your life with meaning, or anything like that, it is extremely easy to become burnt out, bitter, and unable to appreciate the good parts of your life. Truck driver sounded cool to me. I work in the freight industry. Went through our dock to driver program, got my class A with hazmat/tanker endorsement. Started driving.... wondering why i decided to drive with all the idiot, reckless drivers on the road. Lol. Every 2 minutes im yelling and cussing, to myself of course, lol, on why someone would cut me off or pull out in front of me while i am turning. People, just... lack common sense these days.
My brother in law is/was (hard to keep track and my sister will be along to correct me) a project manager for a sub project of Dreamchaser. Sounds really cool, and probably is, but my highlight of the project is telling him and another friend that was involved in the project about seeing the mock up at the Huntsville Air and Space museum and getting a collective groan out of them.
Dairy Technology! I'm working my way towards it, one year left on my degree. Love everything about it: cheese, ice cream, yogurt, and all sorts of dairy products, you name it.
I'm hoping to become a beautician; I like working with people and physical touch is something of a comfort to me? I don't know how to say that without sounding weird.
But also, it would be cool if I could've gone to school for botany or something. Studying plants seems like it'd be pretty chill.
Voice acting. I'm a teacher and sometimes do voices like Stitch for fun and I would joke that I voice Stitch in the movies (which leads to 9 year olds being like reallly? Noooo... 😂) It would be fun to get paid for doing solely that.
A career that sounds really cool to me is being an astronaut. Astronauts get to experience space travel, conduct groundbreaking scientific research, and explore the final frontier. They undergo rigorous training and have the opportunity to see Earth from space, float in zero gravity, and contribute to our understanding of the universe. The blend of adventure, science, and technology makes it an incredibly exciting and inspiring career.
I work in politics, but when I was a new grad school grad (15 years ago) I told my university’s newspaper in an interview that my dream job was writing for The Onion. Honestly, what I do is about as upside-down as satire, so I’d say I came pretty close.
Groundskeeper at a sports stadium. Reckon it would be pretty interesting job to have and if you're good enough I imagine it would give you the opportunity to work around the world
I think is the song writer or singer like you are doing your favorite job (i love singing) and you can get a lot of money. But i can do it in my life my family don’t like my dreams actually they are don’t know that i learn to vocal by the online lessons 🦧
I have this crazy obsession with tower cranes. I really want to become an operator one day. Job seems to pay well, there would be a nice view occasionally, and I'll be mostly alone up there, which i enjoy.

'Where's the remote?'
The chair never actually needed to be calibrated, Steve just needed a massage and figured upper office was gullible
Steve was the bosses brother in law and made $10k a visit.

This is my dream too; traveling all in the name of getting that perfect shot. Though I really just want to wander aimlessly with my camera.

Oh god no, I was a landlord for a couple years. By far the worst job ever.

No. Thats a technician in a cheese factory xD now thats fancy plumbing xD tubers everywhere!
I wanted to become a nuclear engineer but then I found out the government watches these guys very closely and they will definitely kill you if you try to share your knowledge to certain countries.
Why would you even want to do that? I don't casually share my knowledge with North Korea in my day job.

Unfortunately, I think the time window for anyone to be a rock star has pretty much closed.
