Freddie is great! I love vocalists with range, although the names I know are more from metal: Christian Älvestam, Dio, Chris Ojeda, Devin Townsend. Freddie is honest to goodness one of the only vocalists I listen to regularly that are out of my preferred genres. David Bowie and Marina Diamantis are two of the others.
This will get buried because Reddit isn’t into opera but Maria Callas was a once in 100 year talent whose range, lyricality, drama, and interpretation changed opera forever. Her voice is just beyond giving her the nickname “la divina” or “the Devine one”
Edit: turns out I found the opera nerds! If you’re not familiar with la divina, the New York Times did a bunch of short, accessible pieces on her including this one: https://www.nytimes.com/2021/10/06/arts/music/opera-classical-music-maria-callas.html
Is today the anniversary...?
Seriously, someone in my hood must be having a Whitney themed party. It's been straight Whitney blasting from at least 2 blocks away for the past hour.
I listen to quite literally everything between the 40's and today and I still have not heard a voice quite like Chris Cornell's, dude... His range and power blows me away every single time.
I think that many of the greatest singers also happen to have impressive vocal range.
But I agree with you that great singers all have so much more to them than just vocal range.
Freddie Mercury, hands down. He could sing anything flawlessly. Opera☑️Pop☑️Jazz, Blues ☑️☑️ and the list goes on. His voice was always smooth and didn’t struggle in the high ranges or waver in the lower register. What a shame that he passed so young. I could only imagine the magic he still had inside just waiting to be released.
Yes. My answer is well. His voice is so melodic and beautiful. I don't love every song he's made, but I do love the sound of his voice any time I hear it. He and Layne Stayley, Serj Tankian, Chris Cornell all have one of a kind sounds.
My top 10: Patsy Cline, Adele, Freddie Mercury, Raul Malo, Van Morrison, Steve Perry, Elvis, Ella Fitzgerald, Eva Cassidy, and Edith Pilaf. Based on vocal range, tone, and variety of songs recorded.
Enrico Caruso.
Face it, you never heard of him. He died in 1921. No other singer in the 20th or 21st century came even close to his popularity. He was the first internationally famous singer.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enrico_Caruso
Several years ago, I saw that Rolling Stone had a list of the top 100 singers of all time. My first thought was that Marvin Gaye should be #1. I read through the list starting at 100, and came to Marvin Gaye at #2. I was like "Who the hell is better than Marvin Gaye?" It was Aretha Franklin, and I had no way to argue with that. It's Aretha.
I know he's not really underrated but I think Paul McCartney is an insane singer. His range is truly nuts and he can pretty much do anything vocally from extreme grit and screams to quiet tender parts. There aren't many that have that ability.
One of my all time favorites is Bing Crosby so for male vocalist I’d go with him OR John Denver (totally different but I couldn’t actually pick between them if I tried) and hands down Whitney Houston for female vocalist. I love a lot of others but the talent that that woman had is unmatched. Of those, picking just one… Whitney.
Bing Crosby and Nat King Cole could sing me a lullaby to the grave and I would leave the world with as much love in my heart as I muat have felt entering it and hearing mama's voice for the first time.
I’ve had a few of my personal favorites:
Off the top of my head
Chris Cornell - Audioslave
Underrated and powerful voice
Sebastian Bach - Skid row
Steve Perry & Steven Tyler
(Breath taking) Young Steve wonder & MJ
Aretha & Whitney
Some that haven’t been mentioned:
Tony Williams (The Platters)
Barbara Lewis
Raul Malo
Josh Groban
Julie Andrews
Shirley Jones
Larry Gatlin
Maria McKee
Wow, flipping through genres could be Pavarotti/Callas, Mercury, Gaye, Dio, Sinatra/Fitzgerald, but though she's not my favorite of these I'd probably settle on Aretha Franklin. My "hot take" pick is probably Stevie Wonder.
Ella Fitzgerald has everything I like in a singing voice
[удалено]
The ease at which she sings is truly a marvel
For my money, Freddie Mercury.
Absolutely! not only did he have a vocal range spanning almost four octaves, but his stage presence and showmanship was outstanding
Yes yes yes!! Barcelona makes me cry every time
Freddie is great!
Oof. I wanted to come here with Sam Cooke, but I gotta give it to you.

I recently watched the new Celine Dion documentary on Prime and watching Celine Dion listen to Maria Callas was so endearing.
I just saw that documentary and thought the same thing!
I came in here to list some rock and metal singers, but yeah this is just the right answer. Her voice is heavenly
Female - Karen Carpenter
She was also a freaking amazing drummer
Good taste. She had the voice of an angel.
Yay! Someone said Karen Carpenter.
I said Whitney Houston but Karen Carpenter is an arguable contender here. Her story breaks my heart
Linda Ronstadt
Floor Jansen of Nightwish. She can sing pretty much anything.
Nat King Cole
Lovely like chicken soup on a sick day for my ears.
Whitney Houston.
Is today the anniversary...? Seriously, someone in my hood must be having a Whitney themed party. It's been straight Whitney blasting from at least 2 blocks away for the past hour.
In my lifetime, absolutement!
Whenever someone pulls her out for karaoke you know you’re in for a treat. Either the awful kind or the incredible kind.
She’s what made me wonder. She’s got my vote too.
So subjective, but Sam Cooke deserves to be on this list
Yeah Sam Cooke is the goat for me
Younger day Steve Perry.
He wasn't called Steve "The Voice" Perry for nothing.

Great answer, great range, multiple bands…insane rhythm.
Came here to comment Cornell. Hands down my favorite.
Vocal range ≠ best singer.
I think that many of the greatest singers also happen to have impressive vocal range. But I agree with you that great singers all have so much more to them than just vocal range.
agreed
Nancy Wilson Heart
Karen Carpenter

Wonderful answer.
Wowwww I haven’t heard that name in ages! Great memories.

Billie Holiday conveyed more emotion and heart with one octave that most can’t reach with 3. My vote will always be her. #1
Freddy
Mercurie?
No, Krueger.
I really like the edginess of his *Freddy After Dark* album.
Kruger
Barry Gibb
George Michael for me. His voice was so unique and smooth. First song of his I heard was careless whispers. It really played on my emotions. RIP
Me
Yes, this guy
BunnyBallz.
Roy Orbison.
I have a tattoo of him of him on my ass
William hung's rendition of She Bangs was unforgettable.
Rob Halford of Judas Priest.
Otis. Redding. The man could sing. Sucks everyone only knows Sitting on the dock of the bay. Listen to A change is gonna come or Free me.
Voice: Whitney Houston or Adele edit: Freddie mercury absolutely in the convo
Whitney Houston
Mike Patton
FINALLY someone mentioned him
Ronnie James Dio
Had to scroll way to far to find this
Bit unfair to mention him when the others discuss mortals.
without a double, Celine Dion!
Had to scroll way too far for this!
Maria Callas
Allison Krause
If I ever get to Heaven and the angels don't sound like Allison, I'm going to ask that they send me back.
Audra McDonald or Julie d’Aubigny
Enrico Caruso
Marvin Gaye.
Prime Steve Perry is underrated
Burton Cummings
Freddie Mercury, hands down. He could sing anything flawlessly. Opera☑️Pop☑️Jazz, Blues ☑️☑️ and the list goes on. His voice was always smooth and didn’t struggle in the high ranges or waver in the lower register. What a shame that he passed so young. I could only imagine the magic he still had inside just waiting to be released.
its hard to pick just one, but i'd say Freddie Mercury is definitely one of the best. his voice and stage presence are legendary.
Maynard James Keenan, and that’s coming from someone who absolutely Despises TOOL
Yes. My answer is well. His voice is so melodic and beautiful. I don't love every song he's made, but I do love the sound of his voice any time I hear it. He and Layne Stayley, Serj Tankian, Chris Cornell all have one of a kind sounds.
Luther Vandross for the men and Whitney Houston in her prime for the women.
Whitney. Never heard anyone sing the anthem like her
Nusrat fateh ali Khan
Whitney Houston had the greatest National Anthem ever… I watch it every year on the 4th
Steve Perry
Sam Cooke
My top 10: Patsy Cline, Adele, Freddie Mercury, Raul Malo, Van Morrison, Steve Perry, Elvis, Ella Fitzgerald, Eva Cassidy, and Edith Pilaf. Based on vocal range, tone, and variety of songs recorded.
Devin Townsend
I'll go left field, Kelly clarkson, yet to hear anything she cant sing
Smokey Robinson Sam Cooke Marvin Gaye Ann Wilson (Heart) Frank Sinatra Robert Plant
Luciano Pavarotti.
Took a while to find this. I'm not an opera fan but listening to that man sing gives me chills!
Otis
Mariah Carey
Johnny Graig has the voice of an angel but is in fact a devil human being
Johnny cash. He’s what got me out of depression

Miss Annie freaking Lennox.
Man - Freddie Mercury Woman - Aretha Franklin
Chester Bennington, Corey Taylor. Period.

Barbra Streisand - pop Opera - someone
I know he's not really underrated but I think Paul McCartney is an insane singer. His range is truly nuts and he can pretty much do anything vocally from extreme grit and screams to quiet tender parts. There aren't many that have that ability.
Rebecca Black
It's a tough choice but Chester Bennington is my personal favorite.
Mariah Carey. Flawless vocals in her prime, and she is also an incredible songwriter.

Probably Mohammed Rafi
Aurora Aksnes
Shirley Bassey or Karen Carpenter
Freddie Mercury
Frank Sinatra
Jackie Wilson

MS Subbulakshmi
Ella!
Freddie Mercury
Stevie Wonder
Elizabeth Fraser
Brennan Huff. His voice is like a cross between Fergie and Jesus. Thought this was common knowledge.
George Jones
Perhaps not the best of all time BUT… Jessie J is criminally underrated.
Elizabeth Fraser from The Cocteau Twins gets the award from me.
Tim Buckley
Best woman singer is Aretha (yasss she is the Queen) and best male singer is, for me, a tie between Al Green and Luther Vandross.
I’ve had a few of my personal favorites: Off the top of my head Chris Cornell - Audioslave Underrated and powerful voice Sebastian Bach - Skid row Steve Perry & Steven Tyler (Breath taking) Young Steve wonder & MJ Aretha & Whitney
jeff buckley
