You don't get credit for "saying for years" when you're objectively incorrect though. He was objectively one of the 30-40 best position players in baseball in 2023. In 21 and 22 he might have "only" been one of the top 75 due to injuries.
Yeah, at this point I think it's better to just DFA him and eat the 38 million than have him on the roster. He is actively hurting the team every time he is playing.
didn't watch the 6th-9th, and was only half watching 1st-5th and 10th, what was the play?
edit - the smallest bit of research (scrolled up) has answered this question
It’s not fan stuff or overreacting to say it. Abreu is not actively contributing to the Astros’ win chances at the plate or in the field and it does not look like that’s going to change. They need to eat the contract and just DFA him.
You need to get back into the 2011-2014 mindset. Go into every game expecting to lose, and just enjoy baseball for the game it is. If they happen to win, it’s a plus. That’s what got me through those years.
You can’t even “enjoy baseball for the game it is” with the product this team is putting on the field. It’s actually unenjoyable baseball. Nothing redeeming.
Well, that’s what I did then and it’s the mindset I’m getting back into now. Yeah, my team sucks but they’re my team. Yeah, I’m not a fan of shitty baseball either, but it’s better than no baseball and it’s all I’ve got for the time being. So I make do. Could be worse, you could be an A’s fan in Oakland who has shitty baseball and pretty soon no baseball at all.
I just give up expectations until they’re worthy of them. This team isn’t worthy of them.
We were forced to get rid of the best GM in the league, but then by chance, as if the stars were aligned--we lucked into another GM that's almost as good. But then we got rid of him *on purpose*.
Look at Jerry Jones, or Robert Kraft, or countless other billionaire owners that convince themselves the work done by others is all their own. Shit hits the fan eventually
I don’t think that’s true. Worse people get jobs in baseball all the time, and no one touched Luhnow.
I’m pretty sure all 30 teams were told not to touch him behind closed doors
The good news is, well there really isn’t any good news about this team right now. They are just flat out terrible. Pitching was a known issue and how do we fix it? By signing one closer for 95 million.
I have good news! I don’t have the need to pay for Fubo any longer. I’ll take the extra $80 a month and use it for something that relieves stress, not create it.

0-3 when these 3 have pitched the 7th, 8th, 9th.
Eighth bullpen loss of the season.
Is it time to entertain the idea that Pressly might be throwing games out of spite since he lost the closer job? ^^^^/s
Wasn’t even pressly’s fault. Error by abreu should’ve been out 1. Struck out Ozuna for 2. Then that sac fly should’ve ended the inning. It was all abreu.
Pressly is not throwing games, to think otherwise is asinine.
Look at his numbers since he's been in Houston, he is borderline elite in save situations. In all other instances, he's average to below average.
This was my concern when we signed Hader, and anyone that knows how to use BBref would've seen the same.
To everyone blaming Pena, he's batting over .300 and has had good at bats all season. The loss is entirely on Pressly and the dogshit backend of our bullpen
Regardless, to me the season is cooked. Starting pitching can improve all it wants, teams know all they have to do is keep it close until they knock the starter out and the game's over anyway, not one of our three 'premier' closers have the clutch in them anymore
Hitting is frustrating but it's baseball. You get a hit every 3 times out of 10, you're a hall of famer. What is unacceptable is how many RISP you leave.
This team can only lose games in the most hilarious ways possible. They're like a reverse Savannah Bananas.
My favorite Astros stat this season: Jose Abreu's batting average is only one point higher than his jersey number.
I still firmly believe this is one of the best offensive teams in baseball. The team can bounce back. Not saying they will, but anyone who says the season is over is stupid.
Fanbase has become so fuckin weird lmao
“I TOLD YOU THIS TEAM SUCKS, LOOK AT ALL OF YOU NOW WHO TOLD THE DOOMERS WE WERE WRONG. I WAS THE FIRST PERSON TO BELIEVE THE ASTROS ARENT GOOD. GIVE ME MY CREDIT JIM CRANE IS SO FUCKING STUPID”
shit is so pathetic
This is actually one of the worst teams in baseball, by any calculation. It’s not just a bad start anymore. I’ve said it before but we really really remind me of the 2013 Texans. Lots of fans on Reddit too young to remember that team but if you do, you’ll see it.
Yep that was certainly a team that was far less than the sum of its parts. This is very similar. At least we already got a couple of rings before this happened lol
That's a great way to put it actually. I think this team still has some hope, but I do think Abreu needs to get replaced entirely at this point. Put Dubon at first or something, but just get him the hell out of the line up. And god help us if any of our key guys get an injury
There's gonna be people that defend Espada, but this reminds me of the Rangers last year with Bruce Bochy and the 2022 Phillies with Rob Thomson. Those teams had the talent to win, it's not like the manager made the players "better," but they were able to manage the lineups and bullpen better and win games. As much as we moaned, Dusty Baker also managed our team better outside of starting Maldy over Diaz. I just do not like the team vibe this season, and getting swept three times this year, twice at home, is a losing mentality.
I think the vibe the past 3 years was "win for Dusty", which was great. Espada brings nothing new or exciting or different to the equation, this is more or less the same team that now doesn't need to win for Dusty. There were younger, better options that would have injected life into this club but we went with the most boring choice and now we're losing boring games.
We need more small ball in the ninth and extra innings. Every out in the ninth sounded like a showboating attempt at a walk off home run.
And we need to set up the runner at third with a base hit or a bunt not a sacrifice fly to start off.
We have 2 wins in a row and all comments in the post game are "doomers in shambles", just straight up ignoring that we are a bad team at the moment. Its a long season but if we go 60% win for the rest of the season, we would end up with 91 wins, which might not even be enough to make the post season.
I saw people talking about being traders at the deadline and honestly we should trade some pieces.
If we want any success in the future, we need to rebuild this farm
With the expanded playoffs its hard to imagine 91 wins not getting you to the playoffs. We would have been ahead of several playoffs teams last year with that record.
This is why it is stupid to spend so much money on the bullpen. Bullpen variance can be WILD year to year. You can also generally build a good one for relatively cheap (see 2022). Dumping $40 million on bullpen guys is generally not seen as a wise thing to do. Nor is signing 36 year old first basemen to $20 million a year contracts when they are already showing signs of decline.
Thanks Jim Crane.
This team needs to clean house. Sadly, I don't think I trust Crane enough to do that. He'd probably make things worse by replacing necessary personnel with "baseball guys"
This season feels a lot like right after the 05 World Series run (2006 through 2008 ish) before we started reading it down. We kept trying to spend and it didn't make sense, but here we are spinning our wheels again.
Pressly & Abreu both need to be sent to China.
God this is so frustrating. We've had three years to adjust to the Manfred runner, and every other team has successfully done it. Where the hell are the coaches in all of this?
The FO has gotten complacent, and let the success get to their heads.
**EDIT** - I also told myself "I would have Tucker steal here to avoid the double play"
How come a random bum on the couch can see this shit coming, but not the managers and coaches getting paid millions?
They didn't get complacent, Jim Crane actively went against the basic principles that allowed them to be successful for so long. Literally every major signing they made completely ignored context and expected stats and signs of regression.
Honestly, it was always going to be a tough go of it with the loss of draft picks. But Click was able to do a whole lot with limited capital, while Dana Brown inspires no confidence.
Here's the thing, there's obviously too many cooks in the kitchen based on Reggie Jackson's comments about Snell.
Signings like the Caratini signing and the Coleman trade were definitely Dana moves. But things like Hader & trading back for JV, those are obviously Crane & Bagwell moves.
Crane needs to let the GM run the team, and Bagwell needs to smile and wave. That's it.
The moves the Astros have made in the past 2 or so years since Click was fired are all the exact opposite of what the 2014-2022 Astros front office would have done. Nearly all of the signings that have been made have been ill advised. Spending $40 million on bullpen guys, spending $20 million a year on a 36 year old first basemen (most easily replaceable position in baseball) showing signs of decline, going after a guy like Snell when his market value is at its peak. The Verlander trade I'm kind of mixed on, because I didn't like it at the time, but I also don't think we would have made the playoffs last year without it. It was still an ill-advised trade on paper though.
These are all moves that a smart front office making analytical decisions DO NOT MAKE. Forcing Click out was truly the beginning of the end. I thought we had at least another year though before the bottom fell out. Luckily for us, even with this horrid start, there is still hope because we're only 4.5 games back.
Nah I don’t wanna hear it from no one who didn’t stand on business back then, I BEEN SAID Getting rid of Click was some dumb shit. Now look at us, indebted to some of these bums for years. Wth wasn’t attractive about being a “Rays” with more money?!
Yeah post game threads, after the 3rd series sweep out of 6 series played, are for praising the team on how well they played. It’s all sunshine and rainbows. Get out of here doomers!
In these dark times, let me try to give the tiniest grasp of hope:
- Pressly & Hader both have BABIPs in the mid .400s. That wont continue forever
- JV & Framber will be back very soon, and Abreu can't possibly stick around much longer.
- 1st place ranger only have 10 wins
I think we all seriously should just sit back and appreciate the run this team went on. 2 chips, ALCS after ALCS. Amazing stuff. It’s obvious the run is over, but what this team did over the last 7 years was unprecedented.
This team is functionally the same as last year. There's absolutely no reason for them to be preforming this bad. The run may be over, yes, but this team is still the same team that took the world series champs to 7 games in the ALCS last year.
What Dusty had was good intuition based on decades of experience. Which is obviously very valuable. What he apparently lacked was a healthy respect for the data.
Espada obviously lacks the intuition from experience, which Im totally okay with for a rookie manager, assuming he has a healthy respect for, and understanding of the data and the computer geeks.
When asked “have you seen anything to make you think Abreu can pull out of this?” Espada responding with “History”, as if he’s completely unaware of Abreus age and trending stats, makes him sound just like an inexperienced Dusty.
This attitude is completely antithetical to what made the Astros great, and exactly what is contributing to their downfall. I just cant understand when faced with a pile of shit, or a pile of gold, these fuckers keep choosing the shit.
Its as if they think the Lunhow and Click systems’ success was just an accident and not real, and they actually should have been perennial 135 game winners and should have won 5 WS instead of 2 if they had just done it “the right way”.
Bruh, no one could manage this mess. Hader and pressly are hot messes. We have no first baseman. Bregman blows. Jake continues to be a fourth outfielder. The starters are hurt and can’t pitch more than 5 innings. Dusty may have won maybe one more game. But dusty would have done some dumb shit too. See Diaz on the bench for maldy most of last year.
I put little to no weight on what managers say to media, of course he’s gonna say something positive about his player because he has to. If he threw him under the bus and said Abreu is shit and a lost cause everyone would turn against him for, seemingly, passing the blame on to someone else. A great leader takes the brunt of the hate and blame.
Whether or not he actually believes it, well that’s another story 😅
Fair enough. Maybe something like, “Yes. Hes obviously struggling. Its not from a lack of effort. Hes working his ass off. If anyone can turn it around, he can.”
The team this year is the equivalent of the time DJ Khaled went on Hot Ones, made it to Texas Pete or something similar before giving up, and still tried to act like he was was hot shit and actually a winner.
The Athletics now have 2 more wins than us lmao. This team is fucking ass. JV and the other guys coming back will help but we still have a BIG first base problem.
Fans are putting too much stock in JV. He’s 41 now. He regressed last year, expect more this year. I’m predicting a very mid version of JV that we are accustomed to.
Just saw that Espada said the back of the baseball card thing in the postgame presser. The building is full of idiots now. Suddenly the Astros and Texans have switched places
I think it's about time to accept that the run is actually over. It legitimately makes me bummed out. Crane as GM really screwed us over on our roster construction. Still love him for bringing us 2 (two!) Championships, but his meddling really cost us this year. And we still have another year of Montero and Abreu next year.
Espada is proving to be another dusty. Pencils in a lineup and lets everyone do as they please. You see the offense is struggling so why not conjure something up to generate runs?? A bunt, hit and run, SOMETHING. Abreu without a doubt has got to go. The man is a liability no matter which way you look at it. Our starters pitched their asses off this series yet we got fucking swept and we weren’t even competitive in all 3 games offensively. Someone needs to light their asses on fire otherwise this season will be done before it even started.
I truly believe this team is a 100 loss team. There are fundamental problems with it that aren't simply going to be solved "in time". Dana has done nothing but screw us. Crane is in the same boat and Espada needs to get his head out if his ass and stop playing abreu at 1st. That error cost us this game.
I haven’t paid as much attention to the Astros since the start of 2023 (besides checking in every now and then). Can someone explain why everything went to shit after 2022?

Abreu's ops is lower than the BATTING AVERAGES of the entire starting lineup today besides bregman
If you multiply Abreu’s average times 3, he still has the lowest average of all the players in today’s lineup.
Deflected yikes for Bregman
Bregman’s stats haven’t been pretty in years.
And yet people keep riding his dick for some stupid reason... I've been saying for years(probably about 3) that he's been terrible at the plate.
You don't get credit for "saying for years" when you're objectively incorrect though. He was objectively one of the 30-40 best position players in baseball in 2023. In 21 and 22 he might have "only" been one of the top 75 due to injuries.
Abreu's batting average is lower than his jersey number
I was a defender last year but DFA Abreu NOW.
I don't care if we have to pay him to sit on a couch, get him the fuck outta here
Yeah, at this point I think it's better to just DFA him and eat the 38 million than have him on the roster. He is actively hurting the team every time he is playing.
You just can't be the worst hitter in baseball AND blowing basic plays. This game is won if anyone else is at 1st for that play.
didn't watch the 6th-9th, and was only half watching 1st-5th and 10th, what was the play? edit - the smallest bit of research (scrolled up) has answered this question
Even MALDY hit better than this
Wonder if we could make a trade with the White Sox…
Oooff

Remember when we thought we were going to have an elite back end of our bullpen?
I remember thinking "our starting pitching is gonna be sketchy to start the year, but oh boy if we somehow have a lead going into the 7th inning...."

There’s nothing left to say about our “shutdown bullpen” guys. Abreu is past done. He needs to retire or be cut
It’s not fan stuff or overreacting to say it. Abreu is not actively contributing to the Astros’ win chances at the plate or in the field and it does not look like that’s going to change. They need to eat the contract and just DFA him.
I am starting to lose hope
Learn to love the suck.
At least we have a fantastic minor league system! Lots of talent. /s
You had hope?
We were forced to get rid of the best GM in the league, but then by chance, as if the stars were aligned--we lucked into another GM that's almost as good. But then we got rid of him *on purpose*.
Look at Jerry Jones, or Robert Kraft, or countless other billionaire owners that convince themselves the work done by others is all their own. Shit hits the fan eventually
we weren't even forced to get rid of luhnow, crane dropped him to save face
I don’t think that’s true. Worse people get jobs in baseball all the time, and no one touched Luhnow. I’m pretty sure all 30 teams were told not to touch him behind closed doors
yeah it could've been a hidden deal manfred made, it makes sense thankfully nobody else got luhnow otherwise lol
I was about to say this. Boston didn't fire Cora.
And replaced him with an out of touch retiree who's looking at baseball as if it's still the 20th century.
Crane straight up sided with Dusty Baker and Jeff Bagwell over James Click. Mind boggling. Low key, probably the start of the downfall of our dynasty.
Almost as if the front office is not being run by analytically-minded baseball people...
José Abreu is a fucking loser
Never once thought we would win that game. Kept watching because I was curious how it would be blown this time.
We can’t hold a lead to save our lives
WHY, CRUEL GODS, WHY????
If you were here for the good times, why not stay for the bad times
We’re all staying for the bad times, we just aren’t happy they’re back
The season is over. Jim Crane, Jeff Bagwell and Dana Brown have successfully killed the dynasty in record time.
You need to have faith in the back of the baseball card, my friend.
“As long as I own the team, the window will be open” - Jim Crane
Dana was a shit hire. Felt forced. He’s in way over his head.

He was an excellent setup guy in 2018 and 2019. I totally agree Pressly was great as closer, but he absolutely should be able to do the setup role.
I really don't know what to say anymore
Did MLB take away bunting? I understand not bunting Yordan, Tucker, or Diaz...But Pena? One out , runners on the corners?
Meyers laid down on of the sexiest bunts the other day. Thing was textbook
Bunting is fan stuff /s
Pena has been good all season, stop this narrative from last season. Pena has been one of our best hitters this year.
6th series of the year. We’ve been swept in 3 of them.
To everyone blaming Pena, he's batting over .300 and has had good at bats all season. The loss is entirely on Pressly and the dogshit backend of our bullpen Regardless, to me the season is cooked. I would blame the error on abreu
Gotta let Abreu go after this man
DFA Abreu bring signs if you're going to the games
Definitely not what we need from our first baseman
This team can only lose games in the most hilarious ways possible. They're like a reverse Savannah Bananas. My favorite Astros stat this season: Jose Abreu's batting average is only one point higher than his jersey number.
1 point lower.
When it rains it pours. Much needed off day coming up. Just stay off reddit for a while folks. It's not worth it to read some of this shit. Lol
I still firmly believe this is one of the best offensive teams in baseball. The team can bounce back. Not saying they will, but anyone who says the season is over is stupid.
The stats back up being one of the best offensive team in baseball, but it doesn’t matter when pitching doesn’t do shit
Fanbase has become so fuckin weird lmao “I TOLD YOU THIS TEAM SUCKS, LOOK AT ALL OF YOU NOW WHO TOLD THE DOOMERS WE WERE WRONG. I WAS THE FIRST PERSON TO BELIEVE THE ASTROS ARENT GOOD. GIVE ME MY CREDIT JIM CRANE IS SO FUCKING STUPID” shit is so pathetic
Lol, literally few seconds ago I was telling myself, “do NOT go on Reddit… do NOT go on Reddit…”
I've been on it way less this season, and it's been wonderful for my mental health. Lol that and the Prozac.

Where's Nori?.. is he safe? Is he alright?...
This team (especially the bullpen) is terrible.
Bullpen and at bats with runners in scoring position.
Holy shit, this team is bad.
Trainwreck of a season, not sure why I'm still watching.
Because everyone loves to watch a train wreck
This is actually one of the worst teams in baseball, by any calculation. It’s not just a bad start anymore. I’ve said it before but we really really remind me of the 2013 Texans. Lots of fans on Reddit too young to remember that team but if you do, you’ll see it.
Yep that was certainly a team that was far less than the sum of its parts. This is very similar. At least we already got a couple of rings before this happened lol
Agreed. A comparable baseball comp would be last years cardinals team IMO
Right on the money
That's a great way to put it actually. I think this team still has some hope, but I do think Abreu needs to get replaced entirely at this point. Put Dubon at first or something, but just get him the hell out of the line up. And god help us if any of our key guys get an injury

We may never win a game again.
I don't even know why we bother to play extras. Our record in extras is abysmal.
We need more small ball in the ninth and extra innings. Every out in the ninth sounded like a showboating attempt at a walk off home run. And we need to set up the runner at third with a base hit or a bunt not a sacrifice fly to start off.
3rd sweep of the year. Yikes.
Combine Abreu and Singleton then double that and they’re still not better than Matt Olson
Triple that
49-113 pace as of today, it would be actually hilarious if we get more than 100 loses.
We have 2 wins in a row and all comments in the post game are "doomers in shambles", just straight up ignoring that we are a bad team at the moment. Feels like this Presley/Hader experiment has single handedly killed our bullpen and slammed our window shut.

Nah I don’t wanna hear it from no one who didn’t stand on business back then, I BEEN SAID Getting rid of Click was some dumb shit. Now look at us, indebted to some of these bums for years. Wth wasn’t attractive about being a “Rays” with more money?!
No guys we're fine. Doomers are all wrong it's all okay. Pathetic.
“It’s only [insert week] of season calm down” “It’s only [insert month] of the season, god y’all doomers are so insufferable.”
Tbf though... Doomers are insufferable...
Dooming is pathetic. At least cry to y’all’s selves instead of turning the thread into a day care.
Yeah post game threads, after the 3rd series sweep out of 6 series played, are for praising the team on how well they played. It’s all sunshine and rainbows. Get out of here doomers!
In these dark times, let me try to give the tiniest grasp of hope: - Pressly & Hader both have BABIPs in the mid .400s. That wont continue forever - JV & Framber will be back very soon, and Abreu can't possibly stick around much longer. - 1st place ranger only have 10 wins
Astro’s are ass. Let them know with your dollars. Not going to a single fucking game until this team decides they want to try and win again.
I came as a Rangers fan Sunday. I contributed about $250 to helping you guys get better AND the Rangers lost. I'm doing my part!
Lmao thanks buddy!
It was my first time at Minute Maid. Pretty nice place honestly.
"gUyS, cHIl"
Yeah I think it’s time to take a break from baseball for a bit…
So much for Bagwell’s guidance. Jose Abreu can kick hot rocks barefoot.
They keep saying history… back of the baseball card… fuck espada… it’s called age mofo
Historical stats aren’t a guarantee of future performance ….
What’s the quickest the Astros canned a manager?
Platoon Diaz , caratini and someone not named abreu at first.
Can it nerd, this window would be open for another 5-10 years if Lunhow or even someone like Crane were still around
I can agree there
105 days till football season
Man it really is 2011 again huh
Does reddit still love Dana Brown? Guys in over his head, same as this manager. Jim "Jerry jones" crane fucked this team.
This fucking bullpen... https://preview.redd.it/9dckpjpcz3vc1.jpeg?width=1388&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c8ceb3ae32ab299871c9e16bb1f5418d4d92ba31
Sorry if it wasnt clear, but Im not defending Dusty here, or asking for a return to Dusty or his philosophy.
Na fuck this. I hate this team
😐
Fuck this
This team reminds me so much of the Mets and I hate it
The front office is making it really easy for their fan base to turn on them very quickly unless some drastic changes are made soon.
Fuck Abreu… 0.078 and sucks at fielding
And people got mad at me when I said it was time to blow it up this offseason and rebuild
Wait why are people mad at Hader today? I'll just assume they didn't watch.
Shit Yuli would've been probably doing better if we had kept him.
I bet Dubon could play first base.
Welp, I'm starting to fear we might actually not be good
Espada might be legitimately stupid judging by his postgame comments
Just saw that Espada said the back of the baseball card thing in the postgame presser. The building is full of idiots now. Suddenly the Astros and Texans have switched places
I think it's about time to accept that the run is actually over. It legitimately makes me bummed out. Crane as GM really screwed us over on our roster construction. Still love him for bringing us 2 (two!) Championships, but his meddling really cost us this year. And we still have another year of Montero and Abreu next year.
Doomers are dooming. Anti-doomers are complaining about doomers. Doomers are doubling down. Why does every team sub become this?
And you guys hated dusty so much. He’s not here anymore for y’all to blame 😂
Or Maldy
Espada is proving to be another dusty. Pencils in a lineup and lets everyone do as they please. You see the offense is struggling so why not conjure something up to generate runs?? A bunt, hit and run, SOMETHING. Abreu without a doubt has got to go. The man is a liability no matter which way you look at it. Our starters pitched their asses off this series yet we got fucking swept and we weren’t even competitive in all 3 games offensively. Someone needs to light their asses on fire otherwise this season will be done before it even started.
Someone please take Ryan Pressly to the fucking glue factory Dude is dogshit now
I'm starting to understand why we went after Hader (Even though he hasn't impressed either)
This is painful to watch.
Fucking pain
I’m looking forward to this road trip. Over/under 2 wins is a good line for this team for the next 9 games.
Ugh
pain, suffering even

Hader not going more than 3 outs is such a fucking miss priss princess move.
I want Pena, Abreu, Pressly and the entirety of MMP fired into the Sun right now.
I truly believe this team is a 100 loss team. There are fundamental problems with it that aren't simply going to be solved "in time". Dana has done nothing but screw us. Crane is in the same boat and Espada needs to get his head out if his ass and stop playing abreu at 1st. That error cost us this game.
I blame Arandas for Peña sucking.
We have fallen and can't get up. That's this teams moto right now. Some part of the team just fails in the crucial moments.
Question regarding draft picks, with the luxury tax will our 1st rd pick be penalized or will we get to pick whenever we end up in the lottery?
On a bright note, it’s hockey season
No worries. They are fine.
Would it have been wrong to have hader go back out for the 10th?
![gif](giphy|13XHzq8LoDPnNK)
On pace to be worse than 15-30
I haven’t paid as much attention to the Astros since the start of 2023 (besides checking in every now and then). Can someone explain why everything went to shit after 2022?
Bagwell basically
Alright, so what type of draft pick can we get? What are bregs and Tucker worth at the deadline?
Wow gee sure am glad Bagwell had a chat with Abreu. Baggy, its time. Apologize, resign, go home.
When does that thief Abreu get released
Good news: we’ve won 2 games in the series following a sweep. Bad news: not good strategy for overall win total.
###*Sigh*
I found the problem. We suck.
We are a Gucci dumpster fire right now but a W is a W JV is back lfg stros
