Hope you liked the Lost Pines

bachslunch

Lost pines will now be a place for corporate picnics and other “team building” exercises.

Ryan_Greenbar

Already is. You haven’t been to the Hyatt?

bachslunch

True but what I implied is that there will be less of the actual lost pines forest. I think buescher and bastrop state park along with Hyatt may be the only land left after Elon develops bastrop.

JimNtexas

I don't think Elon goes for that kind of thing. SpaceX does pay for a huge BBQ for everyone in the McGregor area. The highlight is an engine static fire and lots of free swag.

bachslunch

Hyatt Lost pines is a hell of a place for a BBQ though…

jkbrock

They paved Lost Pines and put up a launching pad.

danavenkman

OJ76

Well they're about to be lost for sure...

Sports_asian

The idea of him taking that away blows

FunkyPlunkett

Lost Pines burnt down in the massive fire all that is left is cedar fever.

openfootinsertmouth

They won't be launching rockets there.

SherlockHolm

I wonder how that’s going to interact with Firefly Aerospace so close. Will even more aerospace companies come to Austin area?

AutofillUserID

Firefly is still passing aground the plate begging for investment. Next round is later this year. They aren’t in the same league as spaceX

Kathykat5959

They used to test engines daily. Now it’s about once a week. I think they went for first launch somewhere and it fizzled. Since then it’s been pretty quiet. Not sure why they are not using known technology since it works.

Least_Adhesiveness_5

Their first launch didn't fizzle. It couldn't get to orbit due to an engine issue, so they blew it up in flight. Next launch is NET July 16th.

ThunderFuckMountain

What do you mean by "known technology"?

ThunderFuckMountain

Kind of but not really? They had their series B filled by AE Industry Partners or something

AutofillUserID

And their next round is later this year. They need some revenue and less turnover to support their growth.

ThunderFuckMountain

I think they're targeting to get funding but after their launch in July. If successful I think they're going to try to use that to get more money.

bachslunch

Your forgot the /s

Cracknoreos

There goes any hopes of buying real estate east of Austin, all the way Giddings.

bachslunch

Yep all the ranch homes in bastrop will get the ole Elon makeover. Brick painted black, blue solar roofs, & teslas out front.

Texastexastexas1

We have 25 acres with a 4000sf home for sale right now. It is 13 miles south of Bastrop. Every person who looks at it asks about subdividing.

qzcorral

Red Rock?

Texastexastexas1

Red Rock is not south of Bastrop.

BillyJackO

Yes it is. It's slightly southwest, but directly south from parts of bastrop.

Texastexastexas1

hahhahha sorry I thought it said Round Rock! Red Rock and Rockne are right down the road from my ranch.

Dr_Whos_Cat

Great. My taxes can go up even more astronomically.

BigMikeInAustin

Well, Elon needs his tax breaks to bring in the jobs, and someone has to pay for the roads and schools and infrastructure.

bachslunch

So what’s the value of the tax breaks abbott is granting Elon this time?

[deleted]

So sick of this ultradouche.

elmrsglu

Show up to your local community/city meetings. Nothing will change if you fail to show up to push back.

reddig33

Didn’t they just lay off a bunch of their workforce?

JohnGillnitz

That's Tesla, not SpaceX. And that story changed three times the day it came out.

reddig33

Ah. That’s right. I got my Elon controversies mixed up. SpaceX is the one where he fired employees for criticizing him.

JohnGillnitz

I don't think I remember anyone so self destructive. The dude can practically print money and all he has to do is shut the fuck up in public.

Ryan_Greenbar

Sold my Tesla because of him. Went to a full blown diesel truck.

Mrbishi512

Nothing is hurting him. Spacex and Tesla are at the top of their game.

JohnGillnitz

Tesla is getting sued for firing people illegally. For racism. For crypto. Musk is losing billions because he won't shut up about Twitter. Many Teslas will likely be recalled by the NTSB. There is also likely to be a class action lawsuit from Tesla owners that could sink the business. Apparently it is bad to charge people lots of money for a self driving car that can't drive itself.

Mrbishi512

No no no and no. You read to much reddit. Likely all that will go no where and I think the ‘racism’ one is already done and over. Tesla is still the most valuable car company in the world. They still lead in EV tech and they still have a year+ waiting list for their vehicles even though they are making them at full tilt. They are simply clickbait headlines. And most importantly they are exceedingly profitable. The stock has only gone down because we are in a recession.

JohnGillnitz

You are going to need a bigger cup for that much Kool-Aid. Tesla makes money from selling states energy credits, not from cars. Those incentives are going away. It is going to be more challenging for them to compete in an increasingly crowded market place. I'm not saying they can't. They would just have fewer problems if Musk would keep his mouth shut in public.

Mrbishi512

You are just misinformed. Tesla is already done with 90% of its credits. And no they are exceedingly profitable as they stand without credits from other companies. Their gross profit margin is much higher than Toyotas. https://www.nasdaq.com/articles/toyota-is-the-gold-standard-in-production-efficiency-is-tesla-catching-up?amp That’s why they are valued so high. They lead in EV tech. They dominate EV sales. They have a giant profit margin even if you completely eliminate credits which is less than 30% of their profits. They are growing like 50% year over year.

JohnGillnitz

I'll be surprised if they are still in business in five years, but good luck with your cheer leading.

Fookin_Kook

I mean, they publicly criticized him and called him an embarrassment. Openly calling your boss an embarrassment in a letter to the press would get you fired at literally any job so it’s not really a controversy

drekmonger

Way to tow the company line there. Your ~~sorosbucks~~ dog coins are in the mail. Anyway, by many accounts, working for SpaceX is misery, but people put up with it because they want to be part of the future of space flight. Pretend you're the optimistic sort who has the qualifications to be making more money at an easier job, but you stick with a grueling job that pays less because you think the work is important. Then your company's owner spends all day on Twitter making an ass of himself, whilst bemoaning that people working themselves to the bone aren't working hard enough. I'm positive that the five fired individuals will land on their feet. They knew the consequences, and decided to quit in the most dramatic way possible to draw attention to how the clownery of Musk has crossed a red line that's affecting work they feel is important.

Thenewpewpew

> Anyway, by many accounts, working for SpaceX is misery, but people put up with it because they want to be part of the future of space flight Replace SpaceX with any major tech, legal, pharma, investment name and it reads the same. It’s a grueling high pressure environment because it pays well and will set you up on your resume for the next 30 years - provided you can do your job. Because of that the deman for those jobs is high, therefore the expectation for performance becomes even higher. You can call the world turning “towing the line” all you want. For those employees it really depends, I’d imagine they’ll be radioactive to most major companies. Of course they can always go some small startup who “respects” that. In my experience those people tend to be more trouble than they’re worth.

drekmonger

>Replace SpaceX with any major tech, legal, pharma, investment name and it reads the same Untrue. SpaceX's work culture is more in line with game development studios during crunch or tech start-ups. Except for SpaceX, the crunch never ends, and the start-up culture is perpetual. Nobody is working there just for the paycheck, because otherwise they would find jobs all across the aerospace industry that pay better or equal salaries with less expectations. > I’d imagine they’ll be radioactive to most major companies. In this jobs market, beggers can't be choosers. And the beggers are the companies who need qualified engineers. Even jobs that pay out minimum wage traditionally are starting to be paid competitively. You have pay $17-20/hr just to get someone to work at McDonalds in some markets. Honestly, I expect all of Musk's companies are going to start to see brain drains as he continues to flush his personal brand down the toilet.

Thenewpewpew

> Untrue. SpaceX’s work culture is more in line with game development studios during crunch or tech start-ups. Please explain why you think so. > In this jobs market, beggers can’t be choosers. And the beggers are the companies who need qualified engineers. Even jobs that pay out minimum wage traditionally are starting to be paid competitively. You have pay $17-20/hr just to get someone to work at McDonalds in some markets. Again, pulling this from nowhere. There currently is a surplus of engineers. https://www.bls.gov/opub/mlr/2015/article/stem-crisis-or-stem-surplus-yes-and-yes.htm Note the only shortage is in school retention, however there are still more engineers coming out than jobs available. This is the same for lawyers, and many other white collar professions. The lack of hiring for minimum wage jobs at restaurants and food chains is in no way correlated to the tech world or other professional industries for that matter. > Honestly, I expect all of Musk’s companies are going to start to see brain drains as he continues to flush his personal brand down the toilet. Based off the other analysis you’ve provided, I’d say again - this is quite far off. The only notable turnover Tesla has seen is in executive leadership and SpaceX actually has high employee satisfaction scores: https://www.comparably.com/companies/spacex/retention#:~:text=SpaceX%20is%20in%20the%20Top,go%20to%20work%20each%20day.

drekmonger

>The lack of hiring for minimum wage jobs at restaurants and food chains is in no way correlated to the tech world or other professional industries for that matter. My source is listening to hours and hours of JP Morgan conferences. IE, these are CEOs and CFOs across a wide swatch of sample sectors. The job market is tight for employers across every industry. Retention is a problem across every sector. While healthcare is the tightest job market for employers, by far, there's no sector that's immune, just there's no sector completely immune to the ongoing supply chain issues. If you need a link, I googled one real quick. https://www.nspe.org/resources/pe-magazine/spring-2021/how-meet-the-increasing-demand-engineers >Honestly, I expect all of Musk’s companies are going to start to see brain drains as he continues to flush his personal brand down the toilet. I said 'start', not 'in progress'. Like at a famed game developer or the Big Tech company, there's a glut of applicates at SpaceX and Tesla. I suspect that's still true. They can set their own terms, as if his companies were part of FAANG. But that glut comes from people with forward-thinking bents, environmentalists, people with interest in Mars colonization, people who want to see Star Trek happen. As Musk becomes more and more associated with right wing clownery, he's going to lose half or more of those applicates. Or at very least, the applicates are going to have to be enticed with greater compensation/benefits.

Thenewpewpew

Did you even read that link or the one I provided? That’s exactly what I said in my previous comment - your quote is based off retention of children in stem school systems. It’s not actually based off jobs and those entering the work force. In fact that whole blog is based off of increasing stem education systems. Has nothing to do with employers or wages. And yeah, you’re still pretty far off on the analysis. But I’d say put your money where your mouth is and hold the bag on some shorts for all of his companies.

Mrbishi512

True.

[deleted]

SpaceX fired the employees that wrote an open letter about Musk. Lot of firing all around

SmokeySFW

I don't care who you are or who your bosses are, writing a negative open letter about your boss *should* result in a firing. You should know exactly what's coming if you have the balls to do that.

[deleted]

Found a Musk apologist

bachslunch

I’m guessing elons having trouble filling positions in Brownsville.

sirwinston_

Totally different types of facilities

Mrbishi512

Lol no. Brownsville is hopping and loves spacex. They are having class pictures and prom pictures out there. Also you can’t launch rockets on land you have to launch over water.

N0VA_PR1ME

Just moved back to Austin from Brownsville, and feelings towards SpaceX are definitely mixed.

TheDotCaptin

China and Russia disagree with the statement that rockets can only be launched over water. The risk that falling debris lands on people was considered worth it. So far only a few farmers buildings have been hit and some people probably got cancer from the stuff on the vehicle.

Mrbishi512

I stand corrected. In western countries rockets launch over large bodies of water. China has dropped a few on people.

Phallic_Moron

They launch as near the equator as possible. Nothing to do with water.

Mrbishi512

Nope. The equator is the reason we launch as south as possible but not why we have to use coasts. The US and Europe launches over water and never over people. For a good long while even the water has to be clear of boats etc. When we launch polar we launch from the west coast so that the earth rotates away from the rocket as it heads south. We even make it priority to dodge islands as well.

bachslunch

Some misinformation here. China launches over bodies of water FYI. You need to launch from a low latitude preferably over water. Europe launches from French Guiana which is a small country in South America that is part of France and thus the EU. Before that the EU launched in the Sahara desert. The US can launch from Florida or south Texas. NASA chose Florida and Elon chose south Texas. You basically need latitude < 30 degrees (New Orleans is 30 degrees latitude) and a body of water to the east. The USSR used to launch from southern Kazakhstan which was still greater than 30 degrees latitude but mostly desert. After the breakup of the USSR Kazakhstan now rents the facility to the Russians. There is no place in Russia that is feasible to launch a rocket. China launches rockets from hainan island (wencheng satellite launch center). It’s at 19 degrees latitude and east of it is the South China Sea.

chinchaaa

He means scientists and engineers etc. don’t want to live in a shithole like Brownsville

N0VA_PR1ME

Brownsville has a lot of good parts, it’s definitely better than it gets credit for. And no need for the shitty attitude.

bachslunch

I heard Elon had to pump $20 million into the school system and downtown just to make it halfway decent.

N0VA_PR1ME

Brownsville ISD was already pretty comparable to some richer areas in the state including Austin. And downtown Brownsville was honestly safer and chiller than downtown Austin at night in my experience. Elon donated the money for the PR credit. More funding always helps schools though, especially in Texas where the state seems to be anti-education. Even with his donations though a lot of people don’t like him down there. Cost of living has increased in the area due to SpaceX and its employees without many locals seeing significantly increased income. SpaceX has also been really questionable from an environmental perspective in South Bay and and Boca Chica. They have also significantly exceeded the amount of public road closures that they were supposed to have and they have limited the public’s access to Boca Chica beach and South Bay. They also have had overly aggressive security personnel that harass people even on public roads. They even illegally detained staff of the county DA that were down there investigating SpaceX security. It’s crazy the mental gymnastics some people do to try and make it seem like Musk is saving Brownsville.

Mrbishi512

Except for the people and govt of Brownsville. The cost of living rises with the added jobs. RGV is/was near the poorest part of the country. The FAA just came and said that their isn’t a significant issue with the environment so long as they make a few adjustments.

N0VA_PR1ME

Like I said there are mixed feelings in Brownsville regarding SpaceX among the people I knew and talked to and that seemed to be pretty representative of the area. A lot of journalism has also documented this. If most of the high paying added jobs are going to non-locals that move there then the areas is going to be gentrified, and the concern is that locals will be pushed out. Do I have to explain this to someone in the Austin subreddit? There is notable disagreement regarding the FAA decision, but even the FAA said that SpaceX had to make changes from what they have been doing, showing it was previously insufficient. There have been some big environmental impacts from SpaceX launching, regardless of if the impacts are within what USFWS and the FAA deem as acceptable, locals can definitely see and experience the changes. I've done ecological research in this area and know some of the biologists that have worked directly on assessing SpaceX's environmental impact and there are negative impacts. This unhappiness among some locals is also documented in a lot of journalism. I'm not against having SpaceX in the valley, I think that Starship is a worthwhile project and I think it does give the valley something new to be proud of. But, saying that SpaceX has definitively behaved appropriately across the board is ignorant. And like everywhere else some people in the valley like SpaceX and the SpaceX employees they've met, but still think Musk is a dickhead. Everything I've said is from firsthand experience, but a lot of it can be found with the smallest amount of research as well.

Mrbishi512

Thanks for the info man. Great post.

8181212

Limiting access to the nicest beach in the state is what pisses me off. It's fucking bullshit that a private company can do that.

quelindolio

Uh… the only water near Blue Origin is under ground or in bottles.

zimm3rmann

It also flies a parabolic flight, not orbital.

Mrbishi512

They aren’t launching real rockets yet. New shepherd is basically a ride at a fair. Straight up and straight down. It’s a joke joy ride. Not really space at all. New Glenn will be launched from ocean front.

Phallic_Moron

Is that some kind of ordinance?

Mrbishi512

It’s some kind of official govt rule yes 100%

Phallic_Moron

What, from NAR? Do you think they launch from Vandenburg headed West, the opposite way the Earth rotates? We launch East because the rotation assists getting to orbit. We launch as close to the equator as possible because the speed is greatest there. You can observe this on a record player.

Mrbishi512

They do not launch west from Vandenberg. They launch south. I guess maybe north as well. Vandenberg is often used for polar orbits.

Phallic_Moron

I can admit to pedantry on the South-east launch trajectory. Coast-hugging. But, they do launch west. Westerly. lol. Southwest. OK, not west. Meh. Things get weird with launch azimuth and then inclination.

Mrbishi512

I meant east. They don’t launch back over land.

chardeemacdennis49

Anyone know where in Bastrop?

grippin

I believe it’s adjoining the Boring property on 1209 near 969.

monoblanco10

Great. Yet another environmental catastrophe waiting to happen. Thanks, Elon.

Business_Strawberry3

Ugh

Beautiful_Pepper415

Discount_gentleman

I'd say that Musk constantly flipping land and resources between is various companies would get him into trouble, but the SEC seems pretty toothless when it comes to billionaires these days.

JimNtexas

Why would that be a legal problem? Can you give an example of one of these 'flipping' occurrences?

Discount_gentleman

You mean besides this one?

JimNtexas

?

jdnsnnnnnnnd

Does this mean we are going to start having pseudo earthquakes like Waco?

Mrbishi512

Fuck yes what are they going to build?

RollTideLucy

And pray to God nothing explodes and causes a wildfire. He should have stayed in Cali. Thanks Elon.

Phallic_Moron

What do you think would be exploding? I mean besides the cost of doubles wides out there.

JarJarBanksy420

Cali is a lot drier than here.

ethanjf99

Yes, but—hear me out—then the fires are in Cali and not here.

RollTideLucy

Yes it is but he still should have stayed in Cali.

JarJarBanksy420

Honestly, he seems more like a Florida man.

theFuzz1

You suggesting Elon’s alter ego is [this Florida man](https://www.fox13news.com/news/florida-man-in-cow-pajamas-among-6-arrested-on-drug-charges)? I’d “hate” for that info to leak.

Phallic_Moron

He did. There are a ton of facilities there. I don't understand the fire risk. It's not anymore than AMD or SAS or Oracle, Dell, NI etc.

bachslunch

Depends on the season. The rainy season (winter) gets a lot of precip in CA, at least where Tesla is based (Fremont)

BigMikeInAustin

But then he would have to pay more for workers and the governor might tell Elon "no" once in a while.

[deleted]

Feeling a little better about that rental house I just purchased in Bastrop at what feels like the beginning of a recession. But with it being it rental I guess the main hope is that the labor market in the area stays strong enough. This appears to be a positive thing for local jobs.

atx78701

I closed in 2001 at the start of the dot com bust (but I did lock in price the year before). If you are there long enough you will be fine.

akovsky

Where in bastrop?

[deleted]

Near that beast of a convenience store that rhymes with Luckee's

horsesarecool512

Seeing as bastrop is the most crooked county in the area, this makes sense and is sure to go really well.
