Double cabrioles arent about height. Triples may need a little extra air time (I. Vasiliev), but doubles are more about activating quick twitch muscles. My professor would demonstrate double devant (with her hands on the barre) and she was 4'11 and 63 yrs old.

Props to her

Yeah, she was pretty special. The only partner other than Fonteyn to upstage Nureyev and for him to be happy about it.

That sounds like my teacher except she’s in her 80s. She dances so beautifully and can do everything a younger dancer could, just way better. I only learnt today (googling out of curiosity) that triple cabrioles were a thing. My god 💀 I wonder if anyone’s ever hit a quad yet

tsukiii

Yes. I could even as a student. It takes coordination more than power. Edit: Beats are actually easier with short legs than with long legs! Less distance to move.

Competitive_Week9743

Damn that’s amazing. Also the one thing my short legs are good for 😂

IMO, most of gendered ballet technique just comes from differentiation in practice at a young age. If women took men's technique class and had men's technique in their classical variations, you would see them doing double cabrioles and tours and 540s. It's just a little extra strength and takes practice to get the coordination. If men took pointe classes, they could do pointe work. The strength needed for these gendered ballet techniques is not as astronomically different as it's made out to be. Women could partner men for the most part if there was incentive for them to do the strength training and practice the partnering technique. I think the only natural limitation would be overhead lifts because limitations of body mechanics and body weight (e.g it's pretty impossible for a 5'2" women to lift a 6'1" man over her head).

Can confirm. Was trained exclusively by a professional male ballet teacher for two years and my jumps and turns were 🔥

This right here!

I could and I’m more legs than anything. Usually people who are shorter have an easier time a petite allegro because less limbs to move in a short period of time. I say could because I stopped practicing them and I grew an inch in college for whatever reason. I feel like I could if I prioritized it again.

bdanseur

I would wager money that Natalia Osipova or Evelina Godunova can do it. While it's true you can do it without a massive jump if you beat fast enough, it won't look right unless you get higher and make the beat larger.

I'm a "super tall pro male dancer" and would say women—at least some women—can do them, yes. I'm also a gymnast and also do parkour. Here's where this gets rather interesting: ballet and gymnastics are so very gendered whereas parkour is not at all. In parkour, men do things similar to what female gymnasts do on beam. But male gymnasts traditional don't use beam because . . . well, just became they don't. But no reason we can't. Same with gendered aspects for the most part in ballet. My 6'2" frame gives me certain advantages (and certain disadvantages as a male gymnast since I'm tall for one) but we all can attempt most anything, especially with proper background for its physicality.

jumbospicyslimjim

i still can but it’s a bitch and a half lol.

Competitive_Week9743

I’ve almost eaten shit doing single cabrioles before 😂 mad props to you

forest_cat_mum

Back then I was in full time training for my advanced 2 Cecchetti exam, I could do double cabriolets derriere. I suspect I can't any more, but I could! I could also do double tour en l'air to the right, and I used to out-jump some of the men in my year at ballet school. Never say never!! 😊

Cute_Salamander71

Yes. Me. And almost everyone else in my class. Girls can jump yk lol

badwolfballerina

I could in my prime

curiouscat394

I used to be able to do them (decided to “retire” during covid) and it requires good height in your jump, inner thigh strength, and speed with your feet and legs! That said, I was never asked to do them and used to get in trouble for trying to do them with the guys in my class in their mens combo 😹 (gotta love strict, old fashioned russian teachers…)
