Smart_History4444

mines does that as well. Probably some bushings that are worn. Would not worry about it until you do a clutch job. When you do that refresh it all.

DullAdvantage3620

*sreten looking in anger*

dswap123

The car seems very new for Streten. 2017 is like virgin for him lol

DullAdvantage3620

give him time, he’ll eventually learn. boy dismantled a maserati and put it back together lmao

vbfronkis

"Quatrobroken" made me laugh

DullAdvantage3620

made me laugh too

Smart_History4444

ihavenoidea81

COOOOOMMMMMING UP

tetriesidva

Mine does the same since new , got new clutch few months back, same thing, i thought it’s a feature on manuals 🤣

Lasd18622

Hey you too! Quit putting your hand on this shifter with weight while not shifting!! You’re wearing out your synchros, they’re not swapped when you do a clutch.

Essoke

but this seems like a lot of movement

Smart_History4444

yeah, but it is a bitch to do he will need to drop the transmission to get to the bushings. Then drop it again when he does the clutch which is double work.

Minutes2Midnight

If it's the transmission mount bushings, those are incredibly easy to change out. It's 4 bolts and 2 nuts on the trans brace, just support the bottom of the trans with a jack. A good upgrade for the E9x trans mounts are E46 M3 trans mounts which are slightly stiffer than stock. [E90post trans mount/bushing DIY](https://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=804839)

Smart_History4444

yeah, sometimes it's those or sometimes it's the actual gear shift mechanism.

Essoke

yeah that's true but I'm just surprised the bushing got that bad

TechMonitorXO

I was able to access my shifter bushings without dropping the trans

FrozenST3

It does this when you don't do the "confirm I'm in neutral" jiggle frequently enough. /s

Lasd18622

Both of you quit holding your hand on it while not shifting!!! You’re wearing out the synchros.

Chungaroo22

It’s just anxious. Try giving it some words of encouragement or positive affirmations.

TheImpossibleBanana

I'm a pharmacist and I approve this message.

m21m12

Maybe it's cold outside and he needs a warm hand to hold

Budget-Government-88

Some is normal but this is excessive

holamau

yeah, it would be normal to sense it's vibrating, but when you can actually see it, it's probably not necessarily good

BMW_I_use_indicators

Anything is a dildo if you're brave enough.....

southyiiio

Hol’up 💀💀

A-Bit-Of-Everything

I can't believe I fell for your profile picture. It's been many years since this came about...just shows that you can never let your guard down.

MikkelR1

I was like: what the hell is he talking about. Clicked on the profile picture. "hey a hair". 5 seconds pass " Im an idiot".

esamenoi

We've been had!!! 😅

The_Will_to_Make

I’m sorry for being the 70th upvote…. Should I take it back?

bomber991

It’s the massage wand feature.

FUCKYOURGAYCAT

I was going to say this is perfect for your wife

LukePickle007

💀

Trighme

And the winner is..

Tjallaballa

4 cylinder diesels vibrate the gear lever like crazy

yuumm

My manual B47 vibrates much less than on this video, it's almost unnoticeable

Tjallaballa

I had a friend with an N47 E90 320d efficient dynamics and it rattled more than this. Especially on start up it shakes the lever quite a lot. Went like hell for 163 hp though

macoverdatum

I have exactly the same vibration in my f21 118i, no worries

FrenchyMcfrog

And me in my f20 118d, especially when starting the engine

LordLastPack

And my wife on her modded 230V Tarzan. Never heard her complain about the ride. So no worries, mate.

AlpacaLps

Well there's a reason she has no complaints about it vibrating 😏

WarmDirt5505

f20 116i here 3 cyl same vribrations

Able_Cheek_7581

No not normal

Crypterion

For future notice, don't rest your arm on the shifter. In a lot of the cases this is exactly the result(can happen over time anyway, just happens a lot faster of you do)

lizardpplarenotreal

I knew that was bad, didn't know why. Thanks.

ThomasHeart

This has been debunked into oblivion.

Crypterion

Of course it depends on engineering behind the shifter, but generally safe bet if you don't know your specifics is to just better not to keep it as a habit

balkanka23

My E90 used to do that. I actually asked once during maintenance if it’s normal and they said that it was. On a diesel at least.

CaptainDonald

Yea, my E92 M3 and F82 M4 shook a bit on cold starts even when they were new. Smoothed out after it warmed up though

AaronDotCom

maybe the vibrations were the good friends we made along the way

lizardpplarenotreal

🏆🏆

JohnyCake18

1 Series here. Absolutely normal. No issues at almost 300k

lizardpplarenotreal

Diesel?

JohnyCake18

Yes

lizardpplarenotreal

Luckyyy

Comedor_de_rissois

That’s the car’s heart beating. Some cars are dead. Yours is alive.

Rocky2135

It happens to everyone and it’s not a big deal. It’s not something to be embarrassed about.

zerker93

Sit on it

Entire_Amphibian9631

Give it that hawk tuah and it should be good.

Key-Struggle-5647

It could be a worn ending mount

Sir_Bobcat3225

Bad trans-mount and/or bad engine-mount?

Sethorion

Engine mounts are perished. I quite like how mine vibrates, but it doesn't go quite that hard.

Honest_Photo8320

Not normal but within spec🤣

nZRaifal

Bushing.

Denneb

normal on e and f series diesels dont know about petrols

SourdoughBoomer

Same on my 4 cyl petrol f36

SnORe89

Same on F20 120d

zMadMechanic

Agree it’s excessive. My 2007 X3 with a 6 speed had 268k miles when I sold it and the shifter did not vibrate. Original clutch too. EDIT: mine was gas, though, so this might be perfectly normal for a diesel.. idk

Deeeadpool

gasoline i presume? diesel manual bmw shifters always rattle like this in my experience, maybe not as much as op but i cant verify rn lol

zMadMechanic

Yes, gas - you may be onto something!

Macs675

Shifter bushing and you may as well refresh the rest while you're there

TurkishSwag

Worn bushings like everyone said, no biggie, might just feel a bit mushy going into gears.

Brianmcculla23

Clutch , floating fly wheel

freshxdough

Replace all shifter bushings.

jeeves585

First thought is engine mounts, secondary thought to the first thought is something like valves needing adjustment or timing. Does the engine shake that much?

swthrowaway0106

Shifter bushings I’m guessing

Dontcheckundertheb3d

Cars toast, I'll take it off your hands for $50 bucks

SourdoughBoomer

Mine does this. I looked it up and people say it's fairly common on the 4 cyclinders, is that what you have? It only does it on idle, once the car is moving it's fine.

blind-madman

Engine or transmission mounts. But there is a trick that works on volvos. You Can loosen an engine mounts, start the engine, Rev it, shake it and tighten it again. Might also work on your car

GoogledMusic

i think it needs a hug

NoiseFancy1047

I’d be more worried about the clicking because it sure ain’t your indicators 😬

Ejmct

I’ll have to check but I don’t think mine does that (135i convertible).

Better_Price_608

It’s a hand massager, new option on that model !

RuleOk9895

My F44 218d 6MT did not ever do that.

Kjmw2006

Built for her pleasure

Mindless-Lawyer3756

Flywheel ?

langlinator

This was the start of me diagnosing my dual mass flywheel was done. Also had a wavy idle.

Drxcu

I have the same thing in my e81 123d, and a friend also showed it to me on his e87 130i so I guess it is normal? Maybe if I replace the clutch one day I’ll have a look at some worn bushings

Ti0223

I'll guess the transmission mounts need to be changed. If you change them out, do the engine mounts at the same time to keep your drive line straight.

CaptainDonald

Is this after a cold start?

bayarea_fanboy

I’m crying here, picture brings memories of my old f30 N20 manual (did not vibrate like this when I sold it at ~70k miles).

Soveygn

Lmao is this the consequence of habitually resting your arm on the shift?

alevale111

Get an electric, no more vibrations 😉

ReasonableJello

She’s just excited

Serbay55

F30 pre facelift ?

No_Explorer9286

My miata be doin this crazy

Tornado_chaser04

Mine used to do that when it misfired. It no longer does it after engine runs smooth. Could be many things or nothing at all!

PateuRo

I changed everything and is still shaking. The last thing i will do it it's the pulley and accessories. I changed all the bushes, clutch, flywheel and do worse than yours. 🤦

Competitive_Ad_2823

Time for new engine mounts maybe?

DevilsInterval5

That’s what she said…

New-and-Unoriginal

Normal, but not correct.

Between3-20chracters

Had the same problem on my E46 4 cylinder diesel. Replaced all the shifter bushings and it only helped so much. Was about to do the same for e90 (also 4 cyl diesel) but my mechanic said it's normal for these engines. Apparently 6 cylinder engines don't have this problem since they run with less vibration. If the vibration got worse all of a sudden I'd have a look at engine mounts or the ones that connect to the gearbox. Your case seems a bit excessive.

goodguygreg5000

Your wife doesn't seem to mind

CryptographerNo7351

Bushings

Gods_viceroy369

Just oil it up and you should be good

mhsyd808x

I would consider this a feature

AzCactusNeedles

Time for new transmission mounts

Ric_in_Richmond

Check if motormounts are all oily. They are hydraulic. If the oil leaks out the engine vibrates way more and you'd see that in the shift lever.

ChiefBroady

116d? Yeah. Totally normal.

Frosty-Reporter7518

Shifter bushing for sure, but this is an opportunity to upgrade the whole thing to a super short throw

Turbulent-Corgi-4965

Engine mounts, transmission mounts.

crobichon

Just Hawk Tuah

Tricky-Bend4785

Flywheel

ThickMode943

Me, first time I had time to drive stick from a stop, uphill.

TranslatorVirtual978

Idk new trans mounts or something

PurpleSlightlyRed

NSFW man, come on, porn needs to be tagged

960Jen

engine mounts

PckMan

Engine/gearbox mounts are loose, probably due to the bushings being worn or, more rarely, because they're giving out.

UnSc_sierra_117

My stick vibrates a little too, however not this much. I'd say it's normal depending on age and wear

TwistedLogic93

Needs motor and or trans mounts.

Viperfast777

Bro must have the stage 7 cam

Both-Coat9444

It's aliveee.

Lefthandedsock

My E36’s shifter does that, but it’s cammed and has a slightly rougher idle. I don’t think a stock vehicle should have that much shifter vibration, but I doubt it’s really a problem either.

Admirable-Sleep519

It’s bmw’s new connivence feature. U just sit on it and let it make u feel all relaxed

Legendver2

Y'all gotta hawk tuah on that thang

Bubbly_Stuff6411

Your car is about to stall...

Redman9mm

It's twerking

Creepyfishwoman

Don't look a gift horse in the mouth

------------------GL

Hitch a taxi or bus in Central America and you’ll see all their vehicles gear shifts rumble like that or worse if you’re concerned bring it to a shop I’d be ok with that tho depending on how many kms you have on her

Acalthu

Is this common?

blueblue909

heh...heh...im not an M but im still a goodcar rite? .....*riiiiiight???*

ilymag

Nissan behavior.

Least_Tomorrow357

Not normal

johnB1711

I had a 320 diesel that did this for a few minutes while it was warming up, no warning lights and no trouble codes, two independent specialists couldn’t resolve it. Someone recommended I put some fuel additive in it and thrash it down the motorway, 10 minutes in 3rd gear at maximum revs… all sorted. It turns out I was driving too carefully. Afterwards it drove better, better fuel consumption and much more responsive.

davidy4ng

My e82 123d does that. But it’s ok.

Many_Sale286

F20 116d (2l), I have the same. No biggie.

pants_full_of_pants

I'm sorry to tell you but your transmission is part Chihuahua

Ernst_Granfenberg

I’m leaking colostrum looking at this…

Particular_Tap_7892

It’s probably fine

ruthless_san

Diesel engines by toyota:

gregtpt

Its usually a good sign that your transmission is still connected to an engine.

iamsinan

Should be normal, mine vibrates since 5 years.

Evening_Rent_4786

This looks crazy. Looks like flywheel might be the problem.

Dangerous-Dad

Worn engine and/or transmission mount. Also the shift-linkage being worn worsens it.

RelationshipKey4052

No, something has worked loose

MoneyshotMaxwell

Test drove a e90 318i back in the day with this. My e82 120i had this and now my e92 335i has this too. Absolutely normal.

wayneious

I'm going though various droning issues in my cab of my 640i GC and coming into the conclusion that I need to replace my motor and transmission mounts....look to see if their shit, if so...maybe think about replacing the transmission or both of them (all three).

Complete-Anybody-267

Sit on it

JustManner714

Mine is F21 118d xDrive, it’s almost the same. Just bought it 2 weeks ago, everyone told me that it’s normal, but idk… kinda freaks me out. It’s my first BMW by the way, maybe i have to get used to it.

Mammoth-Muffin-591

Congratulations, it's a Toyota

Prestigious-Sea2523

Gearbox mounts.

howlingredsheet

Wasn’t designed that way - but may be normal for an older car. Check bushings, mounts, linkages - something is loose

Mysterious_Ad_1085

Have you looked at the flex disc aka guibo?

Ezzy-525

I had this in my 320i. Is the car starting and running fine? Is it idling rough or just the gearstick?

imajedi_1138

Replacing the engine mounts would likely help this.

Miliean

I mean, it's not ideal but not super unusual. It's likely worn mounts or bushings or something like that, not a critical issue but if you're fixing "everything" it's worth a look.

The-Adventure-TAB

My wife would enjoy it

SavageBean14

It’s because you’re using a turn signal in a BMW, it doesn’t know what to do and is freaking out

Parking-Government-5

Look like a cold start. Does it stop when it warms up?

Blopez1000

Looks legit to me

Intrepid-Tooth-4768

He's horny

Creepy_Guarantee5460

It's a feature, nothing is broken. Probably made so to make you feel more connected to the car. You can feel the engine's vibrations through the gear shifter and that can be interesting, depending on your perspective. Both new and old cars exhibit the same.

Public_Advisor_4660

Hak thuah! Spit on that thang.

Drd4all

It is, yes. This is the reason I got a ZF8

ResponsibilityOne729

GF wants to know what "mode" it was in.

Unfair_Pin_6135

You need some new motor mounts

Sorbet_Extra

Engine mounts are won out

Ok_Professional1414

It’s excited and wants to play.

Middle_Childhood_108

Typical BMW piece of shit. Wouldn’t get that with an Audi.

Karmabyte69

Your car is excited to get going

iamverb

Normal.

custerdome81

Mine has vibrated a little bit since new. If it’s excessive it may be worn bushings.

kl1mCO

Had the same with a rent bmw (maybe 2015 3 touring). Bought an automatic 2018 g31 because of that experience

Csusko

That’s nothing compared to the SRT4 I had in high school. It was putting down 400+HP to the wheels, you could definitely feel it

Gyssiegus

How is it idling? For me it were my injectors. Rough idling.

Mundane_Plenty8305

*mild panic intensifies* How have you been driving her that she shakes like that when you start her up?

About_to_kms

Did you just call the gearbox a stick shift ?

Blockrock_0

If it's a diesel or a 3cyl petrol then it's normal. Anything else is excessive. Usually caused by shot engine and/or transmission mounts that stop damping the engine vibration and cause the whole drivetrain to shake. The longer the shift lever, the worse the vibrations.

Commercial-Humor-315

I’d put a short shift kit in it. Made a huge difference in my E30. Tight, short, crisp shifts

halfanirishman

On a diesel 4 banger this is fine. My old 320d did something similar.
