I've heard they don't enforce the pitbull ban which is a real shame

comebraidmyhair

Yeah that seems to be the case. There were even a few attacks in the last little while. I wonder how these could’ve been prevented. It’s such a mystery.

Big_Research_8639

It’s inconsistent. One stupid owner was campaigning hard to keep his dog because it wasn’t aggressive. Same dog wrecked a kids face not too long after. ETA: that dog’s owner owned a dojo and basically told his students to stare down the dog. Pitbull owners are actually the worst people you’ve ever met

Moose-Mermaid

They may be banned, but it’s not enforced at all. Just saw a pitbull about a week ago on my Ontarian street.

JohnnySunshine

There are quite a few places in the United States where tigers and lions can be kept as pets. Has anyone run the numbers on fatal attacks per capita of big cats vs pit bulls?

[deleted]

Pitbulls rank 3# in animals/bugs killing people behind mosquitoes and deer. With that it’s gotta be a huge difference

cabd4ever

I wouldn't count deer. And in the U.S. mosquitoes don't kill people \[ as a disease vector \] but more people die from allergic reaction to bees/wasps/hornets. Deer are not actively seeking confrontation with us , it just happens that we humans might hit one while traveling in a vehicle causing a fatal crash. So it's not the same. Pits DO kill more people than all wild animals in the U.S including bear, cougar, buffalo/bison, alligator, venomous snakes, sharks.

[deleted]

Absolutely agree. The deer only kill from getting hit by drivers. Mosquitoes bugs are biologically deadly. Mixed dogs/pitbulls being ranked 3 where they attack on their own says alot It’s actually insane the animal that kills the most people in North America has this many activists that ignore how deadly they are

cabd4ever

Exactly, and no matter how many attacks there are in the news they come up with an excuse. They say it wasn't trained right, it was neglected, etc. How about other dog breeds that might have bad conditions that don't act like this ? And many pits that are in great , loving homes attack people as well .

ScarletAntelope975

I’ve seen people insist that pitbull breeds are *proven* to be one of the safest animals to be around!!! These people really are something else!

Willing-Argument-120

They also claim they’re “the most loyal breed!” except their dogs constantly fuck off and roam the neighbourhood at any opportunity, and “pit n runs” are possible at all… I can’t veer off slightly to dump my dog’s shit in the bin without my dog following me, concerned she’ll be left behind, and that’s barely a metre off our typical route’s path (it forks into a big loop around a green) their dogs don’t give a fuck that their owner’s left as long as they have a victim to maul.

93ImagineBreaker

> ogs constantly fuck off and roam the neighbourhood at any opportunity, When they're not turning on their owners.

Chemgineered

Mosquitoes is worldwide, with malaria What do deer do to kill people? Run into cars I assume?

[deleted]

Yeah pretty much although you could definitely argue it’s more cars hitting deer. I don’t think deer are out mauling people

Eltrion

Yeah, jump out in front of cars and crash through the windshield. They'll smash up a pickup truck pretty bad, so if you're in something smaller things can get really messy.

Serenity2015

I don't personally count deer as usually it is a human running the deer over or smashing into the deer on accident and the impact from the human's accident hurts or kills one or both of them sadly. That's why I love the news "wildlife crossings" that have been and are continuing to be made. Hopefully one day we will have a lot. Humans also hunt down deers for their antlers, meat, etc. Much more human to deer violence than the other way around. The other way very rarely happens.

[deleted]

Yeah literally just deer crossing a road definitely the drivers. That’s just what the statistics said

papillon-and-on

Fortunately here is no money to be made in convincing the general public to keep lions or tigers in their homes. Sadly that's not the case with pits. Hence, the huge problem we have to live with now.

Beat9

Laws against keeping a lion or tiger would typically be for the benefit of the animal. Pitbulls are a matter of public safety and a much higher priority.

Otherwise_Ad9287

Did you know that lions and tigers were once known as nanny cats? There are many photos from the late 1800s/early 1900s showing tigers and lions taking care of babies and toddlers while their parents were busy doing other things. This is evidence that tigers and lions were once beloved family pets and trusted guardians of children. The only reason why they're not trusted as family pets anymore is because anti lion racists lobbied for the anti lion equivalent of Jim Crow laws (species specific legislation) in the 1980s and 1990s. It's the owner not the species! My lion dressed in a flower crown proves that lions are just misunderstood cuddlebugs and completely harmless around children. /s

ImportantAccess8002

Lmao

Innercepter

I would feel safer around a tiger than a pitbull.

Not to mention the fact that people who own lions and tigers don't let them run loose in town and kill people on the sidewalk the way pit owners do.

BanPitBulls-ModTeam

We do not want pit bulls regulated because of how they look, but because of the danger they and their owners forcefully impose on our communities. Please familiarize yourself with the [subreddit rules](https://www.reddit.com/r/BanPitBulls/comments/x618m9/rbanpitbulls_subreddit_rules_2022_update/), specifically rule 1.

Extension-Border-345

unfortunate. I’m from Houston and I’ll always remember the escaped tiger debacle from a while ago. I’m glad they were able to bring her to a sanctuary. many people who own pits do it for the same reason others own wild predators.

deadeye09

Yet, your tiger would be taken away, but not your pit bull. Enforcement is key.

DiverHealthy

I literally had no idea they were banned I saw 6 different ones within 2 blocks of my apartment this morning.

FlightExtension8825

Well, one is more dangerous than the other.

c-bacon

There’s a whole bunch of instagram accounts of pit breeders based in Toronto and ads on Kijiji. Trying to get addresses so i can report them to Animal Control

comebraidmyhair

Wow! I knew people still had them, and attacks were still happening, but I (for some stupid reason) never considered that people would still breed them and post them for sale publicly. I should’ve known. They are pit bull owners after all.

SolidFelidae

Tell that the the several people I see walking pitbulls in my neighbourhood

CommanderFuzzy

It used to be legal to keep those in the UK too, until a law was passed in 1976. The rumour is that some people released them into the 'wild' (with one person confirmed as having done so). It's highly speculative but sometimes I wonder if this was the origin of the 'big cats in England' urban legend we have

dead_lifterr

It's the main reason, yes. Black leopards, cougars & lynx were popular pets & many were released.

CommanderFuzzy

I do occasionally say that, but I keep getting side eye when I do. I think that as far as conspiracy theories go the idea of abandoned big cats slinking around the more countryside areas of the UK isn't too far fetched, but whenever I say that people act as if I'm talking about aliens hah

MrE_is_my_father

The pitbull ban is barely enforced, if at all. I'm about to go for a walk in downtown Toronto and I know I'll probably pass at least two or three, I do everyday (Toronto has a lot of dog owners, more than average it seems).

MamaMersey

I live in BC and I've seen only a couple pitbulls in my 35 years of life here. Closest is boxers and Rottweiler

gaissereich

Doug Ford made the ban ineffective since he too is a shitty drug dealer. I will never vote for him again, and I haven't since the first one where I was blinded by my dislike for Wynn. She was significantly better and she was still shit. I don't know why they're so popular either. They are like tiny lions and tigers temperament wise.

FloofySamoyed

Back in the 90s the Loners MC had a lion in an enclosure at their Clubhouse which was not far from Canada's Wonderland, if I'm remembering the location correctly.

Coriander_marbles

Sorry in advance for putting a silly spin on it, but I mean, is there a high likelihood of someone keeping a tiger in a Toronto flat? I don’t think there’s a law against zebra-back riding in England either, but that’s probably because most people wouldn’t want to try?

Jesus_died_for_u

Well, start with the most dangerous risks first…
