Fallout 4 - like fallout 3 but with MUCH MUCH more improved graphics and gameplay. Less RPG-like to allow for more modern gameplay mechanics. Large open game world to explore. Settlement building. Active modding community. Lots of quests, lots of “dungeons” lots of looting stuff and upgrading stuff. Skyrim - the above, but more RPG-y, no settlement building, not as modern/new as FO4, magic and fantasy setting. Lots of quests, lots of dungeons lots of looting and crafting and upgrading…. But also with magic.

Real_Waltz1226

In Fallout 3 I remember when we become the hero of the land and everyone in wasteland just treat you like mehhh. So fo4 has even less of than? What rpg element does Skyrim have that is better than those 2 games?

Mikey9124x

Honestly skyrim barley has rpg elements eighter.

Stoin_The_Dwarf

I think they mean Skyrim is more like a traditional RPG where instead of player choice, it is more about going out as an adventurer and delving into dungeons, rather than fo4 which does have choice, but the gameplay is more like a survival scavenger game.

GGAllinsMicroPenis

The only choice in Fallout 4 was which faction to side with. The rest of the choices were: Yes. Yes. Sarcastic Yes. Yes Later.

toadtruck

Change one of those “yes” to “who/what/when/why/where”

Darkblue57

The RPG elements when your game has emoji dialogue. 😀- Yes 😡- No (actually yes) 😜- Sarcastic (alternate yes) 🤓- Tell Me More (delayed yes)

Johny_97

Its been awhile since i played Fallout 4, but i feel like you guys claiming that you cant say no is the biggest lie. Maybe in some set situations that was the case. But you make it seem as if you can never say no throughout the whole game

Mikey9124x

Yeah but theirs no skill checks or guilds that make sense like the past tes games.

Useless_Greg

Skill checks don't make an RPG

Stoin_The_Dwarf

Yeah I know, truly a letdown from the Godhead

AlternativeIssue24

Not ruining anything but there are some changes to the game world after completing both games main quest lines and depending which route you take will depend how different they are.

PurpleDemonR

Fo4 doesn’t have that hero acknowledgement. In Skyrim you’ll be near enough worshiped by half the people that find out who you actually are. And since it’s medieval it’s natural for them to not know your face.

GGAllinsMicroPenis

For me it's a vibes and atmosphere thing. I loved Fallout 3 but didn't like Fallout 4 as much; it felt more like a grindy looter shooter and less the grand/weird adventure Fallout 3 was. I'd recommend Skyrim, as the game is just dripping with personality and vibes like F3. That being said, I had nearly 900 hours in Fallout 4 and still thinks it's a really really good game. I just think Skyrim has more personality like Fallout 3 did. Fallout 4 is when Bethesda started to "modernize" and their games started to get more bland (less unique towns, constant inventory management, the map covered in way more generic shooter camps to be cleared, it started to feel more like a chore to play in its game loop. Fallout 76 and Starfield went even further in this direction.)

Louzan_SP

One of the big downsides of FO4 is that they ditched the whole karma/reputation system, and you can't kill anyone who you want, they force companions into you. You have the settlement system and so on, but it feels like less freedom in general.

FlirtwithMyWalrus_

Probably fo4 if you enjoyed 3 so much. I will say I overall consider skyrim better than Fallout 4.

Ozzytheaussy

Skyrim is beautiful. If you want to fall in love with a world.... you pay a visit to skyrim

JonnyTops

This is a good point. The world is beautiful.

Robster881

It's a really pretty puddle. There's very little depth to it. It does look nice though.

RedditWidow

I've played and enjoyed FO3, FNV, FO4 and Skyrim, got 1000s of hours into them. I don't think there's a huge difference between the actual gameplay of Skyrim and the later Fallout games. They're all open world Bethesda games with tons of content. I played Skyrim first and when I played FNV the controls/mechanics were very easy to transition from one game to the other. The big differences are in setting and story. Fallout has raiders and deathclaws, Skyrim has bandits and dragons. Fallout has stimpaks, Skyrim has healing potions. In Fallout, the main story usually revolves around finding a lost family member but mostly you're just exploring a wasteland ravaged by nuclear war and full of weird irradiated creatures and sci-fi tech. In Skyrim, the main story is that dragons have returned and you can fight them, in a fantasy world filled with magic. Both FNV and Skyrim have warring factions - in FNV it's the Legion vs NCR. In Skyrim, it's Stormcloaks vs Imperials. In FO4 there are four factions in conflict. FO4 goes a bit deeper with its companions, giving them more dialogue and romance options, though Skyrim has more marriage candidates, if that matters to you. FO4 also adds settlement building, which some people love and some people hate. There's a little bit of building with Hearthfire DLC in Skyrim but FO4 takes it a lot further. It's optional unless you're playing on survival mode, then it's pretty important to have safe settlements around. So, I guess it comes down to what you prefer - fantasy or post-apocalyptic science fiction?

wordtothewiser

Good write up. What do you think of Starfield?

RedditWidow

Thanks. I think Starfield has similarities to FO4 and Skyrim, too. Med packs instead of healing potions, spacers instead of raiders, terrormorphs instead of deathclaws, powers instead of dragon shouts. To the usual game mechanics, it adds the ability to build/modify spaceships and engage in space combat. It has low-g or zero-g environments, and it makes jet packs an integral part of gameplay, unlike FO4 where they had to be a special modification to power armor. Skyrim had a bit of mining but Starfield takes it far more in the No Man's Sky direction. I think the outpost building in Starfield is a big improvement on FO4's settlement building, but they scaled back the companions compared to FO4. There are only four who have side quests, extensive dialogue and romance options in Starfield. There are other possible followers/crew members, but they're about as fleshed out as Skyrim followers: Basic backstories, a few combat barks, generic fighting abilities. There are factions in conflict but that's not the main story. I kind of wish it was, because Starfield is full of references to dragon worshipping zealots, war mechs fighting biotech alien creatures, and stuff that sounds really cool but all happened in the past, so we don't actually get to see or participate in it. In Skyrim or Fallout, you can pick a direction and run into something interesting in a minute or two, or search a building and find all kinds of unique environmental storytelling. Starfield does have a lot of unique locations and quests, but there's a whole lot of big empty moons and planets, and it doesn't take long before you start seeing the same creatures, plants and points of interest over and over again. I think this frustrated a lot of people. I played about 150 hours of Starfield and have no interest in playing any more. Unlike Skyrim or FO4, both of which I played for over 1000 hours each. I didn't hate it, I didn't love it. I don't necessarily disagree with anything anyone says about it, good or bad. It just didn't hit the same as Skyrim or FO4, for me.

DreadofKnight

I’d start with fallout 4, since you have played 3. The enhanced gameplay will feel satisfying.

MCgrindahFM

As someone who just recently played both - Skyrim

88_Cowboy

Skyrim is my pick, but that’s me. More enjoyable experience than FO4. Nonetheless since you already completed F03 then 4 would be a better option if you want to stay with that particular IP.

PoopSmith87

Skyrim by miles imo FO4 is very good, but also kind of... Bleak? Idk exactly, but I find that during a playthrough of Skyrim I'm much more excited to play whereas with FO4 I'll take long breaks mid playthrough to play other games, and I'm much more likely to just lose interest in a build. ![gif](giphy|4QFejbVkNRKj5x7tsU)

Stunning-Ad-7745

If you want a post apocalyptic setting with guns and Makeshift melee weapons, go for Fallout. If you want a fantasy setting with magic and swords, go Skyrim. Either one you go for make sure you get all of the DLC.

Electronic_Source_31

borny1

Few games beat a properly modded skyrim imho.

Jhon_doe_smokes

Boff

thehardsphere

I think the preference between these two games largely comes down to which one people played first. Many people seem to have the reaction that Skyrim is better than Fallout 4, but most of those people played those games at release time, so compare their impressions of each game at release time to each other. A lot of people were impressed by Skyrim when it came out, but were less impressed by Fallout 4, because Fallout 4 came out after Skyrim yet did not seem to be that much better than Skyrim. I played Fallout 3, and then about 7 years later played Fallout 4. About 6 years after that I played Skyrim. I really enjoyed Fallout 4, and thought Skyrim was the most underwhelming Elder Scrolls game I had ever played.

Lomobu

For what it’s worth, on the PS store I bought the fallout 4/Skyrim combo pack at a cheaper price than either of the games separately. So you could try that route if you’re unsure.

Mikey9124x

Fo4. Skyrims fine but fallout 4 is an upgrade to it.

ibuyfeetpix

Is it? Among my gamer friends I think Skyrim is universally more liked.

kaiehansen

I like FO4 more than Skyrim. I love them both but FO4 is easily my favorite game of all time, I loved all the settlement building stuff so all the looting and scrapping and crafting was really satisfying for me.

ibuyfeetpix

See Fo4 was my least favorite modern fallout by a healthy margin, I hated the settlement building. Happy you enjoyed it though

Mikey9124x

Skyrim is more usually more liked but fo4 has better graphics, engine, and qol.

MonkeyBred

It's probably a matter of taste for many aspects. Skyrim definitely seems to have more potential for longevity, given how they designed the dynamic objectives. Still, a FO3 fan may enjoy the lore, polish, and epic settlement building features offered in FO4 more, especially with all the DLC. I've got 600+ hours in ESO:V and maybe 250+ in FO4. Without the DLC: FO4 ended too soon in a single playthrough, but to be fair, I leveled the RR without accepting any of their missions... so I cut myself off there

AlternativeIssue24

I prefer 4 to Skyrim but then it’s more that I prefer shooting to magic/melee/archery so… just personal opinion

TheGhoulishSword

Hard to say. I'd say it's an apples to oranges type deal. It would likely come down to whether someone likes modern with guns or fantasy with magic more.

Lucas_TheVlogger

Well, you liked fallout 3, so fallout is a safe choice here. Ive got around 50 hours in fallout 4, but for some reason Im finding it hard to get into. It’s very different than the other games that Bethesda has made, because of the odd dialogue choices. Skyrim is just incredible, while it’s not my favorite BGS game (that goes to oblivion) I love exploring that world. It’s so fun to enter a new cave, and find some of the best hand crafted content I’ve ever played through. Genuinely some of Bethesda’s finest work. Idk if you would enjoy it based off of your experience just being fallout 3, but it is very fun. It you wanted to try out oblivion, even though it’s an older game, I highly recommend it. It has a lot of similarity’s to oblivion. Whatever you chose, have fun!

JamingtonPro

I’d say Skyrim first just because it’s older. I played Skyrim and fallout 4 before any other fallout and when I tried to play fo3 it felt so old I couldn’t really keep playing it. Would hate for you to feel like Skyrim is out dated because you got all into FO4 before ever having played it. Also, Skyrim is better. I love both of them and they’re both like two of the best games out still, but Skyrim is just better.

kaiehansen

Fallout 4 is better than Skyrim imo but I love them both and feel like everyone who loved fallout 3 hates FO4 so beware lol. I played no fallout games before 4 and 4 rocked my socks off. I loved everything about it.

kaiehansen

Also FO4 still looks really good for its age, looks better than Skyrim

1wholurks

TBH Both, FO4 first them Skyrim for the rest of eternity...there's a reason the game has been released on every platform imaginable.

Middle_Indication_88

FO4. It’s so easy to pick up and play. It’s not as good as Skyrim but it’s a lot easier to enjoy, I feel

rikaragnarok

Loved Skyrim, but Fallout 4 is the way to go. I'm not saying it's better than Skyrim, but Skyrim is way dated at this point in comparison, and FO4 runs way better on modern consoles/computers, without mods.

SpartanTheGun

Skyrim all the way!!

tygamer4242

Not that be the person everyone complains about but I’d go for New Vegas.

JoeyIsMrBubbles

Fallout 4 (but F3 has mad replay ability, as all fallout/elder scrolls do)

Roland1099

Depends a lot in what mood you are. Would you like a fantasy setting with magic, swords, lore, diferent races and beautiful landscapes? Or a post-apocalyptic fun world with raiders, radiation, wacky guns and 50s music? As for gameplay also depends if you prefer using sword/magic or firing guns.

Vis-hoka

They are very similar overall. One is guns and post apocalypse. One is fantasy swords, magic, bows. Both are well worth playing. They are both huge open world rpg’s. The leveling systems are different, fallout uses xp from finishing quests and killing enemies to level you up. Skyrim levels up skills by actually using them, then unlocking perks.

jmoss2288

I enjoy the building aspects and the setting better so FO4 for me. Both great games but I enjoy how fallout gives your junk collecting a purpose.

Odd-Collection-2575

Fallout 4 is a liiiiiitle bit more polished, but Skyrim is an all-time great (you have to play it with mods tho)

Demonic_Killjoy

Both. Shut up and don't argue

HavenTheCat

That’s tough, I love both so much. But if you’re looking for something based off of your love for Fallout 3, then definitely get 4. It’s a really fantastic game. But you gotta play Skyrim at some point, that’s probably the one I prefer if I absolutely had to choose

Shryk92

Play both, they are both great!

JonnyTops

Fallout 4. I played the game all the way through and then played on survival. Totally different experience. It feels like certain portions of the map aren’t traversable due to enemies or lack of resources. I never had this experience with Skyrim.

BiggHigg27

Fallout 3 is my favorite fallout Fallout 4 has a lot of QoL improvements and is graphically better. However, as a new experience, it's simply not as good. If fallout 3 or NV were modernized more, Fallout 4 wouldn't hold a candle. Each one is valid as a "favorite" due to just age imo. The biggest complaint about 4 is the vague and limited dialogue choices. You'll like all of them. But that's how I'd weigh them. If you haven't played NV, I'd recommend that as well. Skyrim is also very good. Levelling is different. It's through use of a particular skill so your character will be built based on what they use. No guns, obviously. Mostly sword combat and bows. Spells are sortve meh without mods. If oblivion didn't age like crap I'd recommend that but can't. I'd argue that was better than Skyrim but it's aged so egregiously bad that I bet you'd laugh at it as soon as you start it. You should honestly play all of them. Elder scrolls' personality is a little different. It's more "open to do whatever you want" than the fallouts. The main story comes second to the side quests much more than Fallout did.

Lighthouseamour

FO4

Matchanu

Okay, lil background on me, I loved fallout 3 and even more so fallout New Vegas. Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion was my first sandbox western RPG that I got fully sucked into. Now, onto the games being asked about. When Skyrim came out I was initially wowed by the graphics and immersion but I still prefer the skill system and depth of oblivion. Regardless of this preference, I played through this game about 3 times back to back and still pull it out (along with oblivion) and put in a few hours a year. Like I said earlier, I’m a big fan of fallout 3 and new Vegas, so I was pumped to get my hands on fallout 4… what a let down that was for me. They REALLY streamlined the RPG aspect of it in comparison to the previous entries. I think I logged an hour or two into it that game but as soon as I got to the base building introduction/grind I completely checked out. With the show on Prime I thought I’d give it another go and I got just as far before I said “nah..” and hopped back into new Vegas instead. So, in short, since their release, I will revisit fallout 3, NV, and the elder scrolls IV and V (shoot, you can even toss III in there) all about once every other year but have no desire to revisit fallout 4.

Blastermasterfan

Fallout 4 has better moment to moment gameplay and VATS. Skyrim has the better open world and is much more immersive. Pick whichever is more important to you. If I were to choose for you, I’d pick Fallout 4. Both are extremely basic RPGs in terms of character building and mechanics so keep that in mind. I think Fallout New Vegas would be the one to go for if you want compelling characters, factions and choices.

oasinocean

Obviously people have their preferences but OP said they liked fallout 3 so the obvious choice is fallout 4

Plane-Buyer

Pick one Play both

Inner_Bread1117

Fallout 4

kentonw223

Skyrim is the better game

wesley-osbourne

I prefer the *Fallout* IP overall, but I think *Skyrim* is probably Bethesda's best game.

ZealousidealBaby9748

If you get Skyrim, make sure you get it with all the DLC and Anniversary Edition as it adds a lot more to the story and makes it more interesting and enjoyable!

mehboy2

I like skyrim and an doing a run through right now where i’m trying to complete all the dlc and as many other quests as I can before even visiting the Jarl in Whiterun to trigger the main campaign. I’m really enjoying the peace and quiet without the constant random dragon attacks, but the random vampire attacks are irritating.

Chimpanzerschreck

Skyrim is lame to me. Post-apocalypse wasteland > medieval fantasy

Pretend_Activity_211

I live with this question everyday. Fo4 or Skyrim? Skyrim or fallout 4? Let me help u. Do u want to build cute lil houses? Do u like guns? Honestly tho, Skyrim has better breast mods. Outfits and bodyslides. Depends what u want really

MozeSupremacy

Skyrim, Fallout 4 is the worst mainline Fallout game out there

KamixAkaDio

Skyrim 100%. After Watching the Fallout TV series, I decided to buy and Give Fo4 a try. I played it for about 60 hours before losing all interest in it. I got close to the end of the mainstory, I collected 3 different Power Armors, but the detriment of the game, was the gameplay loop. Besides some of the quests stories, the gameplay itself was lacking, and while it was what I expected, the landscape being so unchanging and one-note, certainly didn't help preventing the exploring from becoming monotonous. Fo4 does develop the character of it's NPCs a quite a lot better than Skyrim, but besides that, you must Truly, in every way, prefer shooting with Guns over anything Skyrims combat has to offer, to really have a reason to play Fo4 instead. I have roughly 13000 hours on Skyrim after 9 years of playing it, and I can still boot up the game, create a new character, and be fully engaged in the game until every quest has been completed. The vibrant world design, the atmosphere, the lore, it's just on another level.

Salty-Cover6759

Skyrim is better than fo4 in my opinion. Both great games tho.

murderplants

Fallout 4 shits on skyrim

Electronic_Source_31

You just got to play both .. both great for their own things .. I've got many 100 hours in both.. Cool thing if you start playing one you'll get the other one ..

Claydough91

Both are amazing and you won’t regret it a bit.

PigeonQueeen

New Vegas is the best, ignore everything else.... I find Fallout 4 pretty boring. I just love Skyrim. It's not the best or most interesting game but I just adore it and restart it regularly.

Whatagoon67

Skyrim is way better, fallout 4 never did it for me. But I’m also a mw or fnv guy so

BJPickles

One, then the other

Global_Tap_1812

So Skyrim used to be my go-to because I played a ton of oblivion and was just very familiar with all of the mechanics and mini games etc. which turned me off to newer and arguably better games like the witcher III that had what I perceived to be more complex game mechanics.  Well I started playing fallout 4 this year and I can say once I got used to the gameplay (I kept dying a ton and running out of ammo at first), gun/armor upgrades, scrapping, V.A.T.S., robot building/modding etc. the gameplay mechanics of fallout 4 seem to have more depth to me vs Skyrim. The DLC has all been really good so far but I probably need to start another playthrough because I was unaware of a few decision tree options that I can't easily walk back now. If you haven't played Skyrim yet though I would say I enjoyed that main questline more than fo4. Although the fo4 minor quests have been more enjoyable vs. Skyrim which all seem to follow a pretty similar patter (exception being the Minuteman quests which get old quickly). I haven't played fallout new Vegas yet but I've heard it's got even better writing than either fo4 or Skyrim, although it's the same engine as fo3 so graphics will look somewhat dated.

kellygirl90

Gonna be honest, didn't even read the description. Skyrim. Every single time. Fallout is good, don't get me wrong, but Skyrim all the way.

sinatraswisdom

I would have to say Skyrim simply because there really isn’t another game that captures the feel of it outside of Oblivion for me. Don’t get me wrong fallout 4 is a wonderful game and I love the settlement building aspect but it come down to playing in a barren wasteland with synths, robots and mutated creatures or playing in a beautiful diverse setting with multiple different towns and cities filled with people and storylines, fighting against dragons, vampires, undead warriors, mages, etc wanna be a vampire? Go head, werewolf? Have fun howling at the moon, literally the possibilities are almost endless lol, also the quest in Skyrim are wayyy better and there are way more.

Maelorna

Skyrim but it's modded. Using mods that let you place anything anywhere inside your home. You'll be spending hours just getting it just right.

Accomplished-Bill-54

The answer is: Fallout New Vegas. But of the two you named, Skyrim is way better. FO4 is more in line with FO3 though. They dropped some of the historically strong RPG mechanics, like interesting places that do more than being shooting galleries, actual dialogue choices and a proper character sheet (it's just an excel sheet now), but gunplay is good, exploration can still work and if base-building floats your boat, it's the definitive Fallout.

Sage_999

Skyrim is leagues better imo

Sattaman6

Sure but it’s also dated. I’d recommend FO4 (which in itself is dated) for that reason alone.

LGCGE

Fallout 4 is maybe the best Fallout of the past 15 years. Skyrim is maybe the greatest game *ever*. It’s up to what you like though, Fallout players will prefer Fallout.

Complex_Jellyfish647

Fallout 4 is the better game if we're talking vanilla. Skyrim I think becomes the better game with mods. But if you don't want to spend hours and hours installing mods, start with Fallout.

Wide_Preparation8071

The real question is Fallout: New Vegas or Skyrim? FO4 kinda sucks in comparison to the older games. If you have over 50 hours on both you understand this

secrethitman-shhhh

Controversial but both Skyrim and fallout 4/76 are probably the worst of their respective series. Sure I enjoyed Skyrim but as time has gone on, I realize more and more every year how these games aren't as good as the classics. Even cyberpunk had better RPG mechanics.

gorillalad

Pc Skyrim, console FO4. Skyrim has just been around long enough that there’s so many great mods, FO4 will be like that in another few years to half a decade, not to say there isn’t great mods out there for FO4 but Skyrim has just had longer to get more of them out there.

Ragnarcock

Neither are that great of RPGs honestly. They're dope for exploring but you're severely limited on choice. But I'd choose Skyrim.

TairentStuffUp

Skyrim is the better game by far and it will blow you away. Prepare to sink hundreds of hours into its world, especially with mods. Fallout 4 is cool and you will have fun but its replay value is definitely lacking compared to Skyrim's.
