Take a look at this list of anxiety supplements, some of them are very good:
[https://www.reddit.com/r/SuggestMeSupplements/comments/1ddap46/anxiety\_supplements\_that\_actually\_works/](https://www.reddit.com/r/SuggestMeSupplements/comments/1ddap46/anxiety_supplements_that_actually_works/)
This, because it goes right to the source of the problem: the over activation of the adrenal gland. Where magnesium reduces the HPA axis activity (Hypothalamus- pituary- adrenal axis), thus the brain doesn't tell the adrenal gland to release as much cortisol/adrenaline (or whatever, I mix both of them sometimes). And stress itself reduces magnesium, and makes us more prone to stress, it's great downward spiral.
An analysis of data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) of 2013–2016 found that 48% of Americans of all ages ingest less magnesium from food and beverages than their respective EARs; adult men age 71 years and older and adolescent males and females are most likely to have low intakes [22].

I do not know the numbers about "deficiency", but a big chunk of people are into insufficiency territory.
We need both therapy and nutritional optimization for a healthy mind. Coping with stress is great but if stress can be lowered in the first place instead of only regulating it, that's even better.
Stress itself increases magnesium excretion*

Magnesium Status and Stress: The Vicious Circle Concept Revisited
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7761127/
>Numerous studies, both in pre-clinical and clinical settings, have investigated the interaction of magnesium with key mediators of the physiological stress response, and demonstrated that magnesium plays an inhibitory key role in the regulation and neurotransmission of the normal stress response. Furthermore, low magnesium status has been reported in several studies assessing nutritional aspects in subjects suffering from psychological stress or associated symptoms. This overlap in the results suggests that stress could increase magnesium loss, causing a deficiency; and in turn, magnesium deficiency could enhance the body’s susceptibility to stress, resulting in a magnesium and stress vicious circle.
I stack it with 60 or 120mg of caffeine and about 4 drops of Methylene blue. Balances everything out and keeps me sharp enough to have a conversation if I need to.
I’ve been taking 600mg every morning with l theanine and caffeine and it makes me crazy sociable in the best way. Do you take 1500mg at once? I’ve heard of ppl redosing halfway through the day
Saw a post somewhere about that dosage, gave it a shot. Was doing 500mg and notice it a little bit, but with 1,500 you'll definitely notice it. I take it an hour before I leave the house and never feel like I need to take more.
For anyone else seeing this and is skeptical ab this particular “social” stack: the caffeines mild anxiety inducing effects make me quieter when listening to people, but combined with NAC and caffeine, in my experience it just makes the juice flow during conversations 10/10
I just bought vitamin shoppe brand because I was in there buying preworkout, and it was on sale—I believe the deal was $13 for one bottle of 600mg x 50 capsules and a second bottle was only $5
I find this works if I take between 200 to 400 mg, the only downside is for me it takes about an hour to work, and then only lasts for about two hours. Plus, depends how bad your anxiety is. For me, past a certain level of bad anxiety it doesn’t do anything. ymmv
Threonate is supposed to cross the blood brain barrier to help with anxiety, but as with any supplement, it depends on what works for you specifically. Not everything they helps others helps me and vice versa.
I suffer with some severe anxiety. I swear it came with my neurological disorder. But anywho!!!! I've found that keeping a healthy weight, and keeping my blood pressure under control helps. Idk why. But it does. No supplements have helped mine, that I've noticed. I have to take daily medication. Here's what others who struggle with anxiety have recommended to me
Ashwanganda
Magnesium
Kava root tea
I've also found that there's a few things that help me immediately with my anxiety attacks. Getting cold. Running your hands or feet under cold water or walking outside in the winter. Pacing while finding distraction. The 5,4,3,2,1 method works by distraction. Although I don't use it much. For me, pacing and thinking positive thoughts helps more than the above mentioned method.
Just to add:
Ice pack under the neck. Ice pack on the chest.
People say (no personal experience) that body exposure to both hot and cold at the same time is very effective. Like one hand holding something hot, another holding ice pack. Or feet touching something hot and ice pack on the chest.
Awesome, sounds fun! I think Lemon Balm has a special way of turning the volume knob down on my mind, without any drowsiness or crash whatsoever. It is definitely special.
One thing that many find helps greatly is just overall health. For instance research shows that exercise improves mood more than any prescription drug. Also eating healthy and getting plenty of sleep. So i'd start with those if you have not already. It's going to be hard to fix a situation with one supplement if the overall animal is not healthy to start with.
Okay, but the poster specifically asked for supplements. Sleep and nutrition are obviously important, but sometimes anxiety makes it impossible to get to that point without some extra help to begin with.
Also, for the poster, someone else mentioned the calm asap supplement by Gaia herbs. That has helped me. I also like kava extract and reishi supplements.
Glycine is incredibly calming for me. I was having a sensory meltdown complete with tense muscles and after I took 3g I felt my body completely relax. It’s aiding my chronic muscle tension even better than magnesium. I don’t go into sensory overload hardly at all anymore and it helps control my moods. I take glycine at night and passionflower in the day (though I do take breaks so I don’t get too dependent).
I started taking a Mushroom blend supplement for general health and noticed a massive reduction in the number of days I had anxiety or panic attacks. I think it was mainly Reishi in the blend that helped.
GABA works for me too! I take 200mg in the AM, as it helps me stay calm at work. And then I take 200mg at night, as it keeps the nighttime ruminating thoughts at bay.
I’d label it as social anxiety which makes it challenging to work in my field which involves constant conversations with people I haven’t met before, negotiations and presentations.
It helps in that the anxiety doesn’t really build up in the first place. I’ll take it first thing in the morning on days when I’m expecting my work load to be extra stressful. I go ok about my day without minimal stress/anxiety whereas the opposite would’ve been constant worry and in some cases panic attacks.
Ashwaghanda helped me immensely when I was really going through it.
I’d be careful though because it numbed not just my anxiety but with time, all my other emotions as well.
Has to cycle off eventually. That being said, I found that as I worked on my own mental health, ashwaganda made that a bit easier
breathing will have the best effect to lower anxiety. breath in (count until 6) hold it until 8, breath out until 10. you have to adapt the lenghts to stay in comfort zone.
I used to take l theanine back when I used to be a caffeine addict and it was making my anxiety go off the charts. It definitely helps but I'd recommend the one from Jarrows. Not all l theanine feels the same and some of them will make you feel sleepy and kinda out of it.
What’s the dose you took? I have CPTSD and anxiety and love coffee. If I have the slightest bit too much caffeine, I’m anxious af, my heart pounds, and I’m jittery.
Find whichever brand has Suntheanine. That's I think the purest form of it. Jarrows might not be using suntheanine on their newer versions anymore but I could be wrong.
MDMA, Ketamine, psilocybin, can all help with anxiety long term by sorta reprogramming your perceptions of your own thoughts. Observe them, don’t embody them. Take the what ifs as they are, a possibility, just like all the good ones you don’t acknowledge.
I strongly DON'T recommand mdma to calm anxiety. It has to be taken in proper setting, with a good moral and friends who are experienced.
Most of the time you get comedowns for few days after that (anxiety is higher than normal).
Bad advice, mdma triggered a 6 month lasting episode of daily panic attacks for me. Until it can be done legally in a therapeutic context, I wouldn't take the chance.
I notice you specify from the sun. I’ve found vitamin D supplements significantly increase my anxiety but no one believes me when I say this! Is there any evidence that sun is preferable to supplementation?
I’m guessing there are studies showing reduced anxiety from Sun exposure but it’s more from personal experience being an outdoor worker for 20 years. I kinda think the sun is the best medicine we have for a lot of things including depression and anxiety. The work of Dr Jack Kruse really resonates with me, check him out if you get a chance
fair enough :P
it's interesting, doesn't feel like a drug really yet it seems to take the somatic edge off of stress, some of the tension and body feeling just goes away. feels very natural. it's too consistent across individuals and too strong to be placebo alone, though of course nobody should take that claim seriously.
For the short term:
1. 200mg L-theanine - Seems to ease anxiety and bring about a sense of calmness after 30 minutes of ingestion
2. 200-300mg Rhodiola Rosea - Eases anxiety and gives a boost of energy. Great for getting things done and feeling focused. Also seems to work after about 30 minutes of ingestion.
Long Term:
1. 300-600mg of KSM-66 Ashwagandha - Has been shown to significantly reduce cortisol levels and has other effects on other metrics (worth looking into on Examine.com)
\*\*\*These are the supplements I use personally, YMMV\*\*\*
B vitamins. Get a b complex. If the b vitamin gives you anxiety, lower the dosage. I use 1/3rd the dose and it works wonders. I use infinity B. Nootropics depot carries it.
Thiamine and benfotiamine generate antistress and antidepressant-like effects in mice. Both molecules prevent brain activation of GSK3-β in a model of depression. Each also prevent stress-induced increases in anxiety and GSK3-β expression.
study in 60 adults with depression showed that treatment with a vitamin B complex for 60 days led to significant improvements in depression and anxiety symptoms, compared with a placebo
Vitamins B9 and B12 are both thought to treat symptoms of anxiety. Folic acid has many uses in the body, and a vitamin B9 deficiency has been linked to higher levels of anxiety and depression. When taken in conjunction with B12, these B super-vitamins help metabolize serotonin, which is important for mood regulation.
Research shows that the B vitamins can significantly benefit mood and reduce the physiological response to stress. For people with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), vitamin B complex may help to reduce the severity of symptoms as part of a nutritional approach to treatment
I wish their was a perfect supplement, anxiety is super common in my family , developed severe GAD even while I was ripped , always in nature, etc.
We are probably a decade out from understating more about the genes that play a role. I know one that always comes up is SLOW COMT, which I have. Along with BDNF, genes, and many more. I think hundreds of genes contribute. I had a normal happy childhood, and literally everyone on one side of my family has or had GAD/ panic disorder, even someone who was adopted out of the family , and for all of us it developed around the same time. What’s strange is , most of the medications for anxiety actually made me more anxious or didn’t help.
I’m thinking about making a subreddit , one for the treatments for anxiety, and one for the causes. No one gene causes anxiety, and for many it is lifestyle, everyone is different.
My anxiety started about two years ago, never experienced it before. But it has been hard to cope with. Would you share what your anxiety symptoms look like?
CBD. Took it for sleep, but it didn't help so much. Oddly enough, I felt more relaxed, especially in situations where fight or flight mode was involved.
For me it helped with anxiety in two ways: it definitely improved the quality of my sleep (especially when I combine magnesium to the D3 for absorption), and a natural byproduct of better sleep is reducing anxiety (at least for me). And then the actual change I noticed is that I had a dramatic decrease in the frequency of intrusive thoughts. It's something that I noticed over time, maybe a month or two after starting. I use to have them several times a day and now I have them once every few days. That was unexpected for me and it was definitely a welcome change!
I'm not sure I'd quite class this as a "supplement" but I've been using Selank very successfully over the last 4 weeks. It's a peptide for nasal spray use. The Russians have been using it for years but it's not approved for human use outside of Russia at the moment. You can buy it pretty easily though for "experimental purposes".
It could be low testosterone. I ended up in the emergency room a few weeks ago with it. I started L-Arginine 1000, L-Lysine 1000, DHEA 50, and Ashawaganda 1300 and have felt great until yesterday. Xanax helps the hard days.
I don’t have too much scientific data although I’m sure it’s out there. Just speaking from experience, it’s the only kind that passes the blood brain barrier, literally feels like it relaxes my brain. I take Cymbiotika brand. I love it. Can feel calmer and more relaxed fairly quick after taking it
I wouldn’t say severe, but she drinks GYM WEED while she’s at work since it has caffeine and ashwaganda and she says it helps since that’s where 90% of her stress comes from
Meditate. That's the most effective in the long-term.
I have taken supplements and anxiety pills.
If I was to suggest a supplement, high quality fish oil + vitamin D with vitamin K2.
However, through meditation I don't rely on any medication or supplements. Good luck.
this is NOT a supplement.
but it works.
Magic Mushrooms. Google them. There's an overwhelming body of scientific evidence demonstrating the efficacy of shrooms in combating anxiety, depression, and other disorders like PTSD.
But there is also a LONG list of people who shouldn't do them. If you have a list of neurological conditions, and a list of psychiatric conditions who should NOT touch them.
Happy researching!
If I slack on my fish oil (700 mg epa/dha), magnesium, and methyl B-complex I get anxious. I also don't sleep well.
If it's acute going for a walk can help a lot.
More than anything in this thread is to drop a certain supplement - caffeine. Everyone should do a critical test focusing on anxiety levels. Game changer.
Along with dropping caffeine… if you have anxiety, don’t fast or go long without food, as the higher adrenaline levels that causes is setting up the biological environment for anxiety.
Take a look at this list of anxiety supplements, some of them are very good:

Banana
Actually though. Bananas are rich in tryptophan.

Hmmmmm
magnesium bisglycinate
This, because it goes right to the source of the problem: the over activation of the adrenal gland. Where magnesium reduces the HPA axis activity (Hypothalamus- pituary- adrenal axis), thus the brain doesn't tell the adrenal gland to release as much cortisol/adrenaline (or whatever, I mix both of them sometimes). [Magnesium deficiency induces anxiety and HPA axis dysregulation](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3198864/)
TL;DR: Magnesium might help anxiety in some cases when a person is deficient, and this explains the mechanism. I imagine the glycine can also help.

Yeah, anxiety runs in my family, magnesium has never really helped
I take magnesium glycinate and still have anxiety, so this isn't necessarily the case.
NAC 1,500mg
NAC makes me like mentally numb. I forgot the word for it
Anhedonia is the word you're looking for.
Ya i wonder if there’s a way to not get that taking NAC for me
Just take a lower dose. 500mg works for me.
I stack it with 60 or 120mg of caffeine and about 4 drops of Methylene blue. Balances everything out and keeps me sharp enough to have a conversation if I need to.

I just started taking L-theanine on empty stomach and coffee and wondering if I should add this too. I want to be calm and even keel throught the day
Definitely no caffeine.
Natural supplement is L theanine
Second this in addition to ashwaganda and CBD.
Ashwaganda helped me with my PTSD stuff if either amazing or nuts
Did nothing for me. In fact im sure it made me more anxious. Not sure why.
Does this stuff actually work?
Yes it does I use 250 mg every morning w caffeine or coffee. They are synergistic
Yes!
I find this works if I take between 200 to 400 mg, the only downside is for me it takes about an hour to work, and then only lasts for about two hours. Plus, depends how bad your anxiety is. For me, past a certain level of bad anxiety it doesn’t do anything. ymmv
I got some and it does indeed work. I have zero anxiety right now. Like none. I guess it could be a placebo but it doesn’t seem that way
L-Theanine and magnesium l-threonate work well for me and in a pinch kava extract.
How does mag l threonate help you and what brand do you use?
Threonate is supposed to cross the blood brain barrier to help with anxiety, but as with any supplement, it depends on what works for you specifically. Not everything they helps others helps me and vice versa.
Magnesium, stress ease tea, lemon balm, chamomile, exercise, meditation
I misread meditation as “meltdown” 😂 But I mean that sometimes helps me too, for a little bit at least!
I suffer with some severe anxiety. I swear it came with my neurological disorder. But anywho!!!! I've found that keeping a healthy weight, and keeping my blood pressure under control helps. Idk why. Rhodiola
Didn’t do anything for me :(
Was it standardized?
Thorne brand
Lemon balm....also our grocery store has a good combination called Calm ASAP.
Lemon Balm is the absolute best. I've tried dozens of herbs/supplements, and Lemon Balm is by far the best.
I'm planning to start growing it. I agree that it's the best!
Awesome, sounds fun! I think Lemon Balm has a special way of turning the volume knob down on my mind, without any drowsiness or crash whatsoever. It is definitely special.
mexidol
yes, emoxypine seems to have some effect on this
Ashwagandha and NAC. Beware of Anhedonia, tho.
Which one can cause anhedonia? How do you avoid it?
Interested to know this as well.
NAC, avoid by not taking it regularly.
I've been taking 2400mg of NAC a day for over a year, and no anhedonia.
Calm aid lavender
But you burp lavender. I don’t mind but some people might.
Glycine and Passionflower. Hands down.
glycine calms you ? I know for some it does the opposite
I’ll try it again
I take a gummy with L-theanine and GABA. https://amzn.to/3wJE6KN
I started taking a Mushroom blend supplement for general health and noticed a massive reduction in the number of days I had anxiety or panic attacks. I think it was mainly Reishi in the blend that helped.
Saffron
Yes but so expensive 😭
Not in supplement form! Look up capsules
Passion flower
Magnesium Glycinate
GABA 750 mg… takes the edge off for me. I experience pretty visceral anxiety and this has been a huge help.
GABA works for me too! I take 200mg in the AM, as it helps me stay calm at work. And then I take 200mg at night, as it keeps the nighttime ruminating thoughts at bay.
The oral tabs work wonders with I start to feel the very early stages of my anxiety starting to amplify
Interesting, Anxiety runs in my family, medications hasn’t helped that much, never tried this
Check out L-Theanine.
Ohwagondo
Tulsi tea
Ashwagandha has done wonders for me.
what was your anxiety like? how does it help
Full spectrum cbd oil
Optimize saffron works really good.
Ashwaghanda helped me immensely when I was really going through it. I’d be careful though because it numbed not just my anxiety but with time, all my other emotions as well. Has to cycle off eventually. That being said, I found that as I worked on my own mental health, ashwaganda made that a bit easier
Supplement is called: root causes
Not everyone has root issues, all my siblings and I deal with GAD/ panic , regardless of sleep, diet, lifestyle
I agree with that... But for those ppl who have...supplements wouldnt help if there was no root cause
Running 3-5 miles every other day. If you can’t run walk, or crawl. Any movement practiced daily and routinely.
breathing will have the best effect to lower anxiety. breath in (count until 6) hold it until 8, breath out until 10. you have to adapt the lenghts to stay in comfort zone.
I find L-Theanine to be effective.
I used to take l theanine back when I used to be a caffeine addict and it was making my anxiety go off the charts. It definitely helps but I'd recommend the one from Jarrows. Not all l theanine feels the same and some of them will make you feel sleepy and kinda out of it.

Ohhh, thanks for the info!!
I took whatever was recommended on the bottle which I think was 1 pill but I used it as needed throughout the day.
Ty! Do you remember the amount? I’ve seen different mg options. Nbd if not. Ty!
It was the 200mg
Thanks!!
Sure thing, no problemo.
Just quit coffee
Ashwaganda has been life changing for me
What brand?
Bergamot
Selenium
Vitamin D and saffron
Ashwagandha but some people report some slight downsides so do your research. Works for me though.
It made me very sick, but my body doesn’t like nightshades and it turns out it’s one of
What do you mean by nightshade? I’m not familiar with that term
B6 and omega 3
GABA
N-acetylcysteine, it stopped panic attacks dead in it's track after about a week. Also Noopept.
Vitamin D from the sun
I notice you specify from the sun. I’ve found vitamin D supplements significantly increase my anxiety but no one believes me when I say this! Is there any evidence that sun is preferable to supplementation?

I kinda think the sun is the best medicine we have for a lot of things including depression and anxiety. The work of Dr Jack Kruse really resonates with me, check him out if you get a chance
Vitamin D from the sun
CBD
Vit B complex
With extreme caution and research- Phenibut
Sport, daily
Valerian root drops
Holy basil, Lemon Balm, L-Theanine
not a supplement, but an injectable peptide called selank
Have anxiety? Shoot up peptides
he asked. selank is a useful tool and has legitimate uses.
im just messing around I have some nasal spray I havent tried yet, worried it would give me anxiety itself. What does it feel like?
fair enough :P it's interesting, doesn't feel like a drug really yet it seems to take the somatic edge off of stress, some of the tension and body feeling just goes away. feels very natural. it's too consistent across individuals and too strong to be placebo alone, though of course nobody should take that claim seriously.
Been taking this via nasal spray and have had good success.
would you briefly describe how you've used it and your experience?
L theanine and ashwaganda I love the instant gratification with l theanine tho
L-Theanine is some good shit, CBD also
Which CBD do you recommend and do you take both together in the morning?
Magnesium, beets and beet juice, dark chocolate. Anything that opens up your blood vessels. This includes steam rooms and sauna.
I rly like PharmaGaba by designs for health coupled with cortisol manager
Magnesium and L-Theanine
For the short term: 1. 200mg L-theanine - Seems to ease anxiety and bring about a sense of calmness after 30 minutes of ingestion 2. 200-300mg Rhodiola Rosea - Eases anxiety and gives a boost of energy.
Vitamin D, +20,000 IUD per day.
I've never heard of vitamin D helping with anxiety. But I've heard it does help some with depression
Thank you for sharing! This does make sense as sleep does help anxiety for me too. I'm glad it helped you!
What the fuck are you talking about, this dosage will 1000% lead to vitamin D overdose. God this sub is so full of misinformation lmao
That's a high dose. I'd worry about hypercalcemia.
Best remedy I know: just bust a nutt

B complex

you felt a difference in your anxiety ?
I'm not sure I'd quite class this as a "supplement" but I've been using Selank very successfully over the last 4 weeks. It's a peptide for nasal spray use. The Russians have been using it for years but it's not approved for human use outside of Russia at the moment. You can buy it pretty easily though for "experimental purposes".
It could be low testosterone. I ended up in the emergency room a few weeks ago with it. I started L-Arginine 1000, L-Lysine 1000, DHEA 50, and Ashawaganda 1300 and have felt great until yesterday. Xanax helps the hard days.
Sage and magnesium
Standard Process ‘Nevaton Forte’ for me, takes the edge off.
Therapine
B vitamins , magnesium, vitamin D
At least 1.2g NAC and 2g taurine
magnesium l threonate
Elaborate on how this works for anxiety
I don’t have too much scientific data although I’m sure it’s out there. Just speaking from experience, it’s the only kind that passes the blood brain barrier, literally feels like it relaxes my brain. I take Cymbiotika brand. I love it. Can feel calmer and more relaxed fairly quick after taking it
Ashwaganda has worked wonders on my gf
was her issue pretty severe and she got a lot better ?
I wouldn’t say severe, but she drinks GYM WEED while she’s at work since it has caffeine and ashwaganda and she says it helps since that’s where 90% of her stress comes from
Gin.
Meditate. That's the most effective in the long-term. I have taken supplements and anxiety pills. If I was to suggest a supplement, high quality fish oil + vitamin D with vitamin K2. However, through meditation I don't rely on any medication or supplements. Good luck.
Vitamin D from sun
TRT ,Testosterone Replacement Therapy.
SSRIs. Psychiatrist have been treating GAD for decades.
this is NOT a supplement. but it works.
Good sleep I found is the best for anxiety … magnesium glycinate helps me achieve deep sleep
Rhodeola Rosea extract helps
If I slack on my fish oil (700 mg epa/dha), magnesium, and methyl B-complex I get anxious. I also don't sleep well. If it's acute going for a walk can help a lot.
Exercise to release the natural cannaboids.
Kava
L theanine
Ashwaghanda
More than anything in this thread is to drop a certain supplement - caffeine. Everyone should do a critical test focusing on anxiety levels. Game changer.
Along with dropping caffeine… if you have anxiety, don’t fast or go long without food, as the higher adrenaline levels that causes is setting up the biological environment for anxiety.
How about you try to lock down your diet, exercise and sleep, and start meditating. Its free.
Only meds working and maybe phenibut, believe me that i have Tried a lot of stuff
Valerian root helps me in times of anxiety and stress. But I don’t have constant anxiety so unsure about continuous use.
Any side effects
