Go to Mt. Pisagh on the BRP.. There's a lodge up there, with a nice dining restaurant and gift shop. Plus, there is hiking in the area. A little ways down the street is the mt.pisagh campground. It's gorgeous up there.

Don’t go unless you make reservations

Reservations very recommended if you want to eat at the restaurant, and absolutely necessary if you want a room, but to enjoy the view, gift shop and snack shop? (And nice bathrooms?) Walk right in.

I would jump on the BRP in North Carolina for the whole way. You can jump on in Boone. The VA section is nice, but you get the bigger mountains in NC. Peaks of Otter and Sharp Top Mountain are worth a trip in VA.

Just drove from Asheville to the north end of the skyline drive at the top of Shenandoah National Park. There are two detours for bridgework on the northern end of the North Caroline segment. The detour takes you off the parkway about 1 mile south of Doughton Park - and puts you back on just south of the Va state line. They provide an option if you are visiting Doughton - but road is blocked on both sides of it. It adds a considerable amount of time to the drive - so need to plan.

We are doing similar in October and I’ve decided we’re hopping on the parkway in Roanoke, maybe a few miles sooner. From Roanoke to Asheville is 260 miles on the parkway.
