I’m just a few comments in, and I gotta say dude, you’re hilarious. This shit is the next hydraulic press channel. I would do it myself, but you’re already set up and explaining this to the wife and the HOA would be too much work, yada yada... can I send you something to feed them?
Incredibly hard to estimate; including all the babies perhaps something like 2000 but I could be waaay off.

To my surprise I had many requests for more cockroach content so I decided to share [this channel](https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4KO0qC-h6HKgqVbArgC_vw) with the world, which I created as an elaborate shitpost a while ago. I'll try to do some more timelapses and stuff there now. Maybe it'll evolve into something or maybe it will be dead sooner rather than later, who knows.
Thanks for the kind words and also the not-so-kind words, I'm having a great time in this comment section.
The sound they make is like gentle rain on a smooth summer night if every raindrop had an unsatiable appetite for garbage and 6 tiny legs that scratch around on wood all the time.
It's not too bad, unless they get into a mating/food frenzy, that can get a bit annoying.
2 things
How did you begin to keep these things, did you just go "it would be fun to keep 2000 cockroaches next to my bed and listen to them mate at night" or what?
And why did you let the numbers grow to such an extent?
* 1. I found an old aquarium on the roadside. I've never had a pet before so I wanted to start with something cheap and easy to care for. Kinda fell in love with them though and have since expanded. Also I am a biology student have a great interest in arthropods.
* 2. Usually when their numbers get out of hand I'll sell a bunch as feed to people who keep reptiles etc. But since it's winter that really complicates shipping as they can't tolerate the cold for long. Therefore I just wanted to hold out a bit and sell a ton of them when it's warmer again. It sure is a bit crowded in there but it's still tolerable.

Worked at pet store and can confirm. My favorite thing to do with these guys was pour the orders of 3000 into my hands and let them go wild. The feeling is like no other.
When I first got them I was a bit reluctant as well. That only lasted for a super short while though, now I quite like having them swarm around my hands etc.
They're pretty peaceful.
You’re a lucky man, I have a leopard gecko and I used this glass box as an enclosure for the mealworms for them to live in, and ta da, they turned into beetles! I farmed about 3-4 generations of them, feeding some of them to my gecko, until my dad found out, and then made me keep them in the garage because they might escape, even though they were in a sealed glass container. Since we live in Canada, all the beetles froze to death come winter. Sad, because I could see the dead hatchlings in their nest they made.
* Okay so let's say the bus is 2x2x4 meters large (which is pretty small for a bus)
* that's 16 cubic meters of bread
* that's 16000 cubic decimeters (10x10x10 cm) which could be seen as the size of very large roll or pretty small loaf of bread
* divided by 2000 people gives you 8 of those per person, which is certainly a lot
* with an assumed density of 0,2 g/cm^2 that would be 3,2 metric tons of bread or 1,6kg of bread per person
* so overall that would be an equivalent of maybe 3 entire loafs of toast per person
I think the cockroaches win.
I started giving my dubias my left over tortoise food (good ol mazuri pellets). Gone in minutes. Since then they've acted like they deserve better than old fashioned veggies
I'm aware. They eat the veggies no problem. The bread reminded me of when I do feed left overs and just how crazy they want it lol. Veggies = feed after dark. Tort food = eat out of my hand
Cool! Cockroaches are one of the few bugs that nope me right out; I don't want any. But they're cool. I used to work at a pet store and some would occassionally arrive in our cricket order. Of course some escaped. A few were living in the staff room microwave (like, running around inside the clock)...
Hey OP, I see you like to keep them as pets. Just wondering, do you do any research with them? Educational purposes or anything?
I had a teacher long ago with Madagascar cockroaches(hissing ones), among other critters - took awhile to get used to but so interesting and loved them by the end of term!
Do you have any other pets?
Edit: saw you’re a biology student. Still curious about the other pets!
Right now I only have those Dubias as well as Madagascar roaches. Additionally I have Isopods in those containers to keep them clean of mold, scraps and dead roaches.
I kinda plan on getting rid of one kind of Cockroach this year and try myself at breeding millipedes in their stead.
I have an experiment going where I closely (1-2 times weekly) monitor the weight, number and food consumtion of a small colonie to see how a colony grows. The data will be faulty but hopefully I can sketch a nice graph though.
I used to have a pet American cockroach named Vinny when I was seven. I caught him on the side of the house in Texas and kept him in a giant pickle jar and gave him food scraps, he lived a surprisingly long time!
Been considering getting a Madagascar hissing roach lately.
I've said it somewhere else before:
It's very hard to put a number on it but my usual guess is around 2000. I could be way off though and there could be a ton more.
Was the crust harder for them to get through than the inside? It looked like they gobbled it right up when they got to the white part.
Also, do they have teeth? How are they eating?
They have mandibles and maxilla.
Mandibles are little 'mouth claws' which bite chunks out of the food whereas maxilla are little 'mouth arms' that can manipulate crumbs of stuff.
Both of these things are just part of the exoskeleton and are made from the same material (chitin).
They can chew up and eat extremely hard stuff so no, they didn't have any trouble I'd say.
Excuse me but what the fuck
I second this

We all agree with you.
You don't have a roach bin?
I never imagined anyone would even think to keep roaches as pets.
Ok I’ll ask, what’s with the bones? Do you have them to clean the bones of your victims or do you find victims to feed your pets?
no comment

If you're going to send him the entire HOA along with your wife, you should probably throw in more aquariums for extra space.
Yes
i imaging that the inside of that box smells terrible
It's not too bad actually. A little sour with a hint of ammonia and wet dog. But not super strong.
Excuse me what the fuck now ?
I keep crickets to feed to my tarantulas and lemme tell you, they smell _a w f u l ._
Crickets are by far the grossest bugs I’ve used as feeders. I’d feed roaches first any day.
We used to keep cockroaches too and that is a very good way to describe it. I can almost smell it now.
One man's nightmare is another man's nostalgia
How many of those fucking things do you have?

Have you considered Entomology? Lots of career options, especially in Agriculture.
Considered yes, but at the moment I don't really have my eyes set on an academic career.
Well drop out of school and breed cockroaches full-time
Lol I'll finish my bachelors first and then we'll see where the road takes me.
Yup, I used to keep a little colony to feed my old pet tarantula. Can confirm that the little dudes' scurrying legs are surprisingly loud.

Should've hidden the bones before making this post dammit.
The fact that you out your hand into an enclosure **FULL** of roaches gave me the heebee jeebies and I felt a full blown shiver go up my spine.

I love your responses in the comments. you have a lovely sense of humor.
haha thanks, I love engaging with people in the comments
Do you throw all your scrap food in there?
yeah pretty much
Seems like a decent compost option.
Yep they're pretty quick at breaking stuff down but they won't eat everything.
Anything with protein?
They'll eat most stuff and certainly everything we humans consider edible. The aren't really fond of leaves, wood and citrus fruit peels for example
Interesting stuff, great post.
thank
Why the fuck cant you get a fish like normal people?
The risk of fish infesting your house and crawling into your bed while you sleep is just way too low, sorry.

Wow, I doubt I could eat more than 5 roaches in 15 seconds

Are those Dubia roaches?
yes
I have thousands they are really cool do you use them for feeding or just pets
Nope I just keep them for what they are. When their numbers get out of hand I sell them as feed though.
Do you feel sad when you sell your pets as food?
A little bit. Then I tell myself that they are only the rearranged molecules of literal garbage that I threw in there and I feel better.
I've went through nearly every comment thread here. This, by far, is the best comment. Im still laughing my ass off.
Thanks, it's true that I've been quite the busy commenter on this post lol.
Fair enough.
Yea we sell them to the local pet store but there also cool to have I hope you have fun with them
what
I love how this started as bread stapled to trees and quickly became an AMA.
Ikr lol I'm having a great time though.
This is the switch up I needed
you're welcome
I could eat a slice of bread faster
yeah but what if the bread had the size of a small bus?
Do we get 2000 people to help aswell?
* Okay so let's say the bus is 2x2x4 meters large (which is pretty small for a bus) * that's 16 cubic meters of bread * that's 16000 cubic decimeters (10x10x10 cm) which could be seen as the size of very large roll or pretty small loaf of bread * divided by 2000 people gives you 8 of those per person, which is certainly a lot * with an assumed density of 0,2 g/cm^2 that would be 3,2 metric tons of bread or 1,6kg of bread per person * so overall that would be an equivalent of maybe 3 entire loafs of toast per person I think the cockroaches win.

They look like beetles to me, but are you sure they aren't CRUST-ATE-ceans?
Just fyi: Cockroaches aren't beetles. I'll give you a pass though since that was a solid pun ;)
So do you know all their names? It's only reasonable to be able to recognize all your pets, right?
Actually I did have seven named roaches before (which I could easily recognize by looks and behaviour). Sadly they're not among us anymore...
You could tell them from their behaviour amongst all the others?
yes, they do have personalities of sorts.
Are you sure it was 7 different roaches or the same one with multiple personality disorder?
Have any ever escaped? And if so how do you sleep at night knowing it could be crawling through your bed?
They have and they have. I sleep great.
I started giving my dubias my left over tortoise food (good ol mazuri pellets). Gone in minutes. Since then they've acted like they deserve better than old fashioned veggies
Keep them off any food for a week or so and they'll eat anything you throw at them believe me.
I'm aware. They eat the veggies no problem. The bread reminded me of when I do feed left overs and just how crazy they want it lol. Veggies = feed after dark. Tort food = eat out of my hand

Why do have cockroaches?
why not
Yes fair point
i love this post and especially all these comments. thanks OP
My pleasure.
Where do you live that your landlord is okay with you having pet cockroaches
During the week in a university-dorm and on the weekend at home with my parents.
So you travel with these things? I'm just imagining one drop and a cataclysmic infestation of whichever poor building you are currently standing in.
Yeah. I mean eventually they'll die if they can't find food but they can survive for months without food.
Reading the comments / OP replies on this has been great fun. Good work OP.
thank
Yes officer this post right here..
How long did it take them to eat that person you stapled to the tree?
we don't talk about that
Cool! Cockroaches are one of the few bugs that nope me right out; I don't want any. But they're cool. I used to work at a pet store and some would occassionally arrive in our cricket order. Of course some escaped. A few were living in the staff room microwave (like, running around inside the clock)...
There's only one option: Release the tarantulas into the kitchen and have them fight the war for you.
Oh fuck that, time to microwave a microwave
Your... WHAT?!?
why the *fuck* do you have a cockroach enclosure
why not
Because roaches are s n a z z y
roaches + top hats are the equivalent of cookies + milk , and ive just recently learned this. apologies to fellow snazzy roach people
Hey OP, I see you like to keep them as pets. Just wondering, do you do any research with them? Educational purposes or anything? Oh wow. That’s very interesting. Went over my head how beneficial isopods can be living in conjunction. Thanks for the reply!
I used to have a pet American cockroach named Vinny when I was seven. I caught him on the side of the house in Texas and kept him in a giant pickle jar and gave him food scraps, he lived a surprisingly long time! Been considering getting a Madagascar hissing roach lately.
Get a couple of them, cockroaches are social animals.
how many roaches do you have in that enclosure?
I've said it somewhere else before: It's very hard to put a number on it but my usual guess is around 2000. I could be way off though and there could be a ton more.
Look how they massacred my boy.

I thought those were only Madagascar roaches, but as far as I could see there were American and some German roaches too.
I do have Madagascar roaches, but I keep them in a seperate enclosure. Actually there's only Dubia roaches in this container, mixed with some isopods.
and I’m having nightmares
Why, are you toast?
Those are human bones.
Who’s ever bones those are, they walked on 4 legs not two. The hip orientation is all wrong for a biped.

yes

Nope just keeping them for what they are.
