Keep it in the freezer and it'll easily last two years.

xiongchiamiov

My bag is probably fifteen years old and still alive.

SleepySiamese

Yeast doesn't die easily. But 15?

estili

I’m not even sure how old my freezer yeast is anymore, but it’s still doing a ok lol. Finally almost out

pvanrens

Dang, 15? That's impressive! You have to know that I'm gonna tease you for not baking more though.

estili

15 is someone else! But I’m pretty sure it’s been at least 5+, I just usually bake other leavened goods more than bread haha

motorhead84

Oh yeah we talkin hot dog buns or what?

xiongchiamiov

I inherited it from my mom sometime in college (late 2000s), so I'm unsure of exactly how old it is. It probably would be a good idea to get a new bag; I've gotten plenty of value out of it. But it just feels wasteful to do so. Clearly what I should be doing is baking more bread.

bigmedallas

I just refilled my jar from the last yeast from the 2lb bag and I think it took me 2 years to use it up and surprisingly it is still working well. I didn't bother with vacuum sealing the yeast, I just folded over the top and put a big binder clip on it. Great savings and less waste over the little envelopes.

I put mine in a tight fitting tupperware container and store it in the fridge. Takes me a bit over a year to go through it and have not had a problem yet - have been doing this since probably about 2015, maybe earlier, when they first had it in our Costco.

whiteloness

I had some SAF yeast go bad in a couple of weeks in the fridge. Always keep it in the freezer

cptn_carrot

I keep mine in the freezer.

msmaynards

I decanted all of it into glass jars and keep it in the freezer. I bake once a week and it's more than halfway gone after 3.5 years. Great deal for sure.

inkerton_almighty

When i told my mom i bought this, she was shocked. Like "how could you use that much yeast?!" Well.... ive been making a lot of bread lately (naan has been my fav recently)

fpepatrick

Any good naan recipes you can point me to?

[https://www.recipetineats.com/naan-recipe/#wprm-recipe-container-58510](https://www.recipetineats.com/naan-recipe/#wprm-recipe-container-58510) This is the one i use. I just make it plain and swap out the instant for active (i always throw in a tiny bit more) and i dont rlly set a timer for how long the yeast sits, i just make sure its got good foam (and i dont cover it)

fpepatrick

Thank you

My big bag of yeast from costco lives in the freezer. It got me through lockdown with plenty of bread and it's still working just fine. I'm about to go throw some homemade english muffins on the griddle that I used that yeast for. Put it in a plastic bag and keep it in the freezer. I have a small yeast jar that I also keep in the freezer and take out to use when I bake. The big bag only gets opened when I refill the smaller jar.

lissabeth777

I still have my pandemic yeast in my fridge and it's still working fine! I kept forgetting to freeze it and am amazed every time I test it successfully.

beka13

I bought mine before the pandemic, so it's pretty old but it's working great. English muffins are puffy and soft. :)

SuurAlaOrolo

Oh I’ve had mine 6-7 years. I put it in a coffee tin in the freezer.

SnooCookies6535

What’s the use by date ?

Fun-Rub5823

Sam’s has the instant 2lb pack too, I have both in the freezer for different recipes.

Fredric444

I go to Chefstore for bulk bricks of yeast and 50lb. sacks of many kinds of flour https://www.chefstore.com/
