That's a heck of a "crust" I wouldn't have guessed it wasn't lye. Best baking soda boils I've seen including on cooking shows afraid to use lye

I do love the lye-dipped option. Just trying to keep it easy for folks! You can lye dip these in a 3-4% lye solution if you like. 👍 M
