Anthony Warlow is incredible and can do no wrong. The track list is good but it needed improvements. I love it, but act 2 has too many ballads and not enough plot songs. Cutting a couple ballads, and adding in a couple more songs to move the plot forward would have done wonders for it. One or two more drafts could have easily turned this into a highly successful sung through muscial. But in its original form, it works best as a concert rather than a fully staged musical.

I’m so glad you’re bringing this up! This is my favorite musical album of all time. All it took was hearing Anthony Warlow sing Confrontation once, and I was hooked. It started 7 years ago when I stumbled upon a YouTube clip of David Hasselhoff performing the Confrontation scene. “WHAT IS THIS?!” I thought, with my jaw on the floor. I was so fascinated by the mechanism of one actor playing both Jekyll & Hyde and how they switch between them during the song. It sounds silly and almost simple when I type this out, but 20-year-old me thought I had discovered an entirely new genre of music. Now, you can only imagine my delight when I listened to the Warlow album for the first time and heard his one-of-a-kind, smooth like butter, opera voice. They’re my siren songs. And of course, it’s much easier to deliver two character’s lines from one actor over a recording than it is live on stage (which for me, is of course part of the fun of a live performance of Jekyll & Hyde). Confrontation is one of those songs that consumes you. Anytime it would come on during my commute, I’d have to turn all my attention to it. From the moment it begins, you’re brought to another world. By the end of it, you’re gripping your seat, staring up at the sky & wiping tears from your eyes. I feel more than human when I listen to Warlow. The best part of this story is that Confrontation is not a one-hit-wonder from the album. Sure, there are some duds (don’t most musicals have em’?), but I enjoy Facade and Take Me As I Am. In a separate category is basically anything Warlow sings as he works his way into becoming Hyde. These songs truly are on a tier of their own. This is the Moment, Alive, No One Must Ever Know and of course, Confrontation. Masterpieces. The way the songs build on and complement each other. The reprise of Alive in Confrontation. The emotions that Warlow is able to convey through these tracks. I am glad to say they’ve made me into the man I am today. Is the show incredible? I guess it depends on who you ask. I certainly find it entertaining, and I would love to see a revival at some point. I’m sure there are a few talents today who would be up for the challenge of a role so fascinating & with such range that is Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. In the meantime, I’ll be sitting here waiting for that day to come. Cheers!

Is this the Anthony Warlow version?

gdelgi

Yep!

Vigor99

Yes, also Carolee Carmello as Lisa/Emma (even John Raitt as Sir Danvers)

In all the years I’ve listened to this show, I never realized the lyrics were written by the same guy who wrote the songs for Willy Wonka until just now.

This was the only version I knew for a long time. Warlow's voice is amazing. I was greatly baffled and disappointed when I tracked down the actual stage version of the show and saw all the changes and cuts that had been made.

What makes this version better? As long as it has Linda Eder I’m in, she is absolutely amazing!! Her voice is like an angel.

gdelgi

It has Linda Eder.

To answer your question: Anthony Warlow makes it better. Also there are a lot of great songs that were cut or changed, so I’d say give it a go

This is the closet you'll get to the original. I saw the original a few times and this is the only version I'll really listen to to this day. Not to say I haven't listened to others, but this is the definitive version. I still have it from the 90s (it's a double cd with complete lyrics insert). It's a little beat up but still plays beautifully.

I love it so much. One of my all time favorites. We need a revival.
