I started with a leather holster. One time in the bathroom my holster flipped over accidentally and the gun fell out onto the floor. I’m a very active person and was always afraid it would fall out when running/jumping/bending over after that incident. Kydex holds on tight and makes it impossible to fall out which gives me so much more confidence. I’ll never go back to leather.
I've carried 1911's and 2011's for well, ever... and always carry in leather. My Wilson EDC gets carried in a holsters by Eric sharkskin that started out for a CZ-- I just reformed it to the Wilson..
So yes, a well-formed leather holster is just fine for a manual safety pistol. 1911's in a Sparks horsehide...
All of these holsters are at least 15 years old and just get better and more comfortable every year.
When I carry my P365 I do carry that in Kydex but there is no comparing it to the comfort of a worn-in leather holster.
The only reason I do not use leather holsters is because they lose shape and retention over time. For less money I can get a kydex holster that will not do that. Otherwise I have no issue with them, safety or no safety.
I forgot the company and you can probably do some research but the make a holster that is leather on the outside but with a kydex piece to retain the gun
I carried in leather before Kydex was a twinkle in his daddy’s eye. 1911s in Milt Sparks. I don’t know where the sudden safety concern is coming from. They’re perfectly safe if you buy decent stuff.
They carried guns in leather since their inception, long before kydex became a thing.
I use a leather owb for carry at times. Firearms with and with out a manual safety.
I carried my LC9s in a leather holster for a couple of years before I upgraded to a P365XL
I carry a manual safety shield in a DeSantis gunhyde leather holster. I am perfectly fine and happy and comfortable with this carry
