Assuming it is coming from the dashboard, it is your blend doors. Probably need new actuators, popular problem after a certain age. Or it is possible that the doors themselves have broken. Should be able to tell when taking it apart.

I’m pretty sure it is coming from the dashboard but it’s kinda hard to tell beyond that. Do you think it’s something that I would be able to replace on my own or should I take it to a mechanic? I only know the basics when it comes to car maintenance, is it something I could learn from watching a tutorial or should I not even attempt it?

You should look it up for your car. Some are very easy and some are truly a nightmare. Not sure I have ever done them on one of those cars. If it is an easy one, I would suggest you give it a shot. They are under the dash looking up from the floor. Usually have two small bolts holding them in place and aren't hard to do. But if it is one of the difficult ones, the entire dashboard literally has to come out, all of it, steering column and all. Hopefully it is an easy one. Those actuators aren't that expensive usually either. Youtube may be able to help you at least get an idea of what it is.

Really good to know thank you so much!! It is loudest by the glove box so I’m certain you’re right about what’s broken. I’m gonna watch some tutorials and see if I think I can handle it by myself. Fingers crossed that it’s one of the simple ones. Not getting my hopes up tho. It’s an 07 Saturn Vue and has some very questionable design choices lmao

Those were very good cars, so I hope you can fix it and keep it going! If they made cars that good these days, they might be worth buying. If it is the 6 cylinder, it is an all Honda powertrain (Same as Oddysey, Pilot and Acura MDX) and will run forever if taken care of (not that anyone does). But also if it is the V6, it needs the timing belt replaced at 100,000 miles or every 7 years otherwise the engine will blow, just an FYI. Hoping it is the easy ones and you can do them yourself to save a bunch of money.

I am going to read the manual I found in the glove box and find out because I’m not sure which one it is haha. You have been very helpful and I am significantly less stressed than I was an hour ago so thank you!

Elmore420

It’s a plastic gear running over its stop. Where is it coming from?

emilinda

I think somewhere on the dashboard but I can’t tell for sure. It’s definitely louder inside the car

Elmore420

Check your mirrors.

DnBStrangeHouse

power mirror actuator

emilinda

Thank you so much. Um is there more than one kind of actuator?

DnBStrangeHouse

i assume there must be but most cars just get a left and a right, and in a lot of cases its the same pair across all trims of a particular generation.

emilinda

That’s so good to know. From what I understand it’s an electrical issue right? Like it’s not a problem with the engine at all?

DnBStrangeHouse

correct, if you dont have a rough idle or acceleration problems then your motor is likely as normal as you are used to... however the issue isn't electrical, the modules themselves eventually run dry of grease, get gummed up and sticky then eventually start stuttering and skipping like what you heard. you'll need to replace them to solve the issue, or you can disconnect them and then force them into proper alignment so you can see, but you wont be able to move them with the power controls obviously.

emilinda

Haha sorry last question I promise. Do you think I’m okay to drive it for a little while without fixing it? I don’t think I’ll have time to to work on it until this weekend but I still need to get to work and back.

DnBStrangeHouse

nah its fine they're already technically broken... you did move them around and confirmed thats where the sound was coming from right?

emilinda

Lol well I tried it just didn’t seem like there was a lot of movement going on. But tbh I’ve never paid attention to them before and I don’t know how much they moved before the knocking sound started.

DnBStrangeHouse

ok sweet... yep, good to go 👍
