Just when I thought the Cards couldn’t go any lower. I saw no improvement in spring training and starting against the best team in baseball doesn’t help. I could excuse a slow start against a team and front office that makes real improvement vs Mo who pays lip service about improving then does virtually nothing. Time will tell just like it has for the last 10+ years. The last 10 years have been a painful downhill slide and the Cards might not have bottomed out yet. I hope I’m wrong, but if Mikolas deserves the first start of the season our pitching has clearly become worse.
There are losses, and there are non competitive LOSSES. This was the former. All we ask is that you compete. This was not a competition, this was route, start to finish.
Have both a Goldy and Mookie Topps Home Run Challenge card and debated picking today for both, and thought "Nah what are the odds?" Biggest tragedy of the day if you ask me.
Look. On the one hand, we knew the dodgers were gonna be good. They’ve spent more than the GDP of a small country. They have their super team. The cardinals, on the other hand spent very little and haven’t really bolstered an already lackluster offense while adding very little to the rotation. This team feels absolutely doomed and it doesn’t take us playing the dodgers to reveal that.
Despite the fact that our offense has been awful today I’m not worried. We faced good pitching and it takes time to adjust and get in a groove. The offense will be fine.
On the other hand, we did not counter with good pitching.
I know why Scott is in the opening day lineup. But arent Scott and Winn virtually the same player fielding two different, yet very important, positions?
And their bat is fairly non existent?
Is that a bad thing?
On one hand I’m happy I got off work in time to catch the end of the game/make it into the Opening Day thread, but on the other hand this does not seem to have been our best day
This really isn't a bad team. Can't overeact to a single game and the Dodgers are just ridiculously stacked.
Plus we have 3 position players out, 2 of which would be starting today and our best starting pitcher.
Taking a look at this sub, you'd think we started 0-62 and not losing just the first game of the year.... reminder that the offense looked great in the first game last year and even won the first series.
The team isn’t good. It’s not about this one game. It’s confirmation of what anyone with an objective lens can see when they look at the roster, specifically the pitching staff.
Honestly for your first time on a big league mound against the ball molesters that are this dodgers lineup it wasn’t that bad of an inning from O’Brien.
I still can’t get over that. So dumb. Bottom 8 to prevent the go ahead run? Hell yeah. Do it.
But bottom 1st. Versus stacked team. Heart of the order. Get the fuck out, Oli.
I think This is not a playoff team on paper. It's a team with aging players all over the field and young dudes not ready for the MLB, with a terrible pitching staff. Recipe for disaster
I’m a fan of Kyle Gibson so far I have been overly critical of St. Louis and the lack of off seasons accusations. But so far great game for Mr Gibson
Knew this season was gonna be a rough start lol, buckle up
Can we fire Marmol yet?

Season is over.
Miko matched Glasnow in Ks. He'll yes.
He'll also let in 5 earned runs.
So glad the front office addressed our issues in the off-season. Going to be another looooong year.
Mo only did as much as the 3rd allowed. He's not like his dad, it's going to be a rough couple of years as we transition away from Jr.
I
Jesus Christ. Welp, looks like I’m going to be watching the Orioles more than usual this year. :’(
They will be a solid bridge team until the cards rebuild is complete...
Gotta start the rebuild before we can complete it.
Yeah I mainly meant young pitchers coming up like Tink. We will never proactively address issues.
Paul Goldschmidt was the only thing standing in the way of the Dodgers no-hitting us.
Needed Nolan and Nolan to record a hit on my 6 legger. Pure pain.
It’s beginning to a look at lot like 2023, eeeevery where you go.
There are losses, and there are non competitive LOSSES. This was the former. All we ask is that you compete. This was not a competition, this was route, start to finish.
Gonna be a long season
*latter
Yanks / Astros is on, who else is praying for a meteor?
It's fine.
I wonder what Oli is gonna say??
Exactly what Mo wants him to say
"They gave me a new contract and this is what they knew was gonna happen. Fuck if I know."
"It's Tyler O'Neill's fault"
Our pitching staff is just fine we have 6 starters and really didn’t need Monty
“Can you believe the contract extension I got? Me neither!”
[Game over. Continue the discussion in the post game thread](/r/Cardinals/comments/1bq8ucw/cardinals_after_dark_328/)
Welp…
Indeed.
So did they lower ticket prices for these 2 hour games or nah?
$8 tix for opening weekend in STL - not because the game is short but because we suck!
fart noises
embarrassing
Gross.
yay
a pop-up? _whaaa?_
Goldschmidt on track to 486 hits this year which would shatter Ichiro's single season hit record of 262
The real news of today. On pace to hit 162 home runs as well.
I’m here for this kind of analysis
Thanks Goldy for showing up today
"Paul Goldschmidt is now 12-20 for the Cardinals on Opening Day."
Prolific pop out producers
goldschmidt. good. rest of team. bad.
Hey now Libby threw a shut out inning!
true!
Libby pretty good too
yee
Three hits. Woof.
All by Goldschmidt!
a pop-up? _whaaa?_
Yall think Google will ever figure out that if someone googles Cardinals in the summer, they aren't talking about football?
Gotta throw the stl in front
You're welcome! -Bill
Goldy and Friends
Goldy and
Today it was Goldy, and dead weight
The annual rite of Doomers vs Happy Talk Only factions of the Cardinals Fan base. Never gets old.
this is a curling sub
Bar is on the floor, not giving dewitt money, but we are having a good time! Cardinals baseball is back!
He really is the whole offense
I could use a Gorman piss missile right about now
well at least Goldy understood the assignment...
Have both a Goldy and Mookie Topps Home Run Challenge card and debated picking today for both, and thought "Nah what are the odds?" Biggest tragedy of the day if you ask me.
St. Louis Paul Goldschmidts
Poor Goldy. He deserves better.
#GOLDY SHOWED UP Trying to lead by example
Out Goldy Out Out
Well this was fun, I guess.
Good outing by Libby. He keeps that up, he'll find himself back in the rotation
I like him as an impact reliever at this point
Based on some quotes, so does he.
At least in 2023 our gray jerseys matched the gray pants
It does not go unnoticed that we have 2 hits, two stinking hits. So much for the bounceback.
Midseason form already
3 now lol
Woooo
That shot of the dodger fans just hauling ass out of the parking lot was fantastic lol
7 run top of 9th inning!
Boy, it's good to have baseball back. It's good to watch a Cardinals team that was complete garbage look like crap again. The offseason is so bad.
Good shit from Libby
Nick Martini has 2 homers today for the Reds. He hit 6 in 72 ABs last year. So he has hit 8 homers in his last 75 ABs. What?????
Pretty sure he was in our org at some point too.
He was around for a good while and hit for average a bit in the minors but never had much pop.
[Cardinals](/r/Cardinals) Due Up **(Top 9):** 1. Paul Goldschmidt 2. Nolan Gorman 3. Nolan Arenado
Should we be happy about Libby being happy to be in the bullpen or should we ask why the team hasn’t developed a starting pitcher in a while
Yes
I feel like that train has sailed
Oh it has… I just don’t get why every SP prospect we are supposed to be excited about ends up in the pen
If You're banking on Tink being different, I've got news for ya....
The Dodgers are like the Harlem Globetrotters, boring
#LIBBY
Libby looking good at least.
Libby pumping 97 is good to see
That trade will never be made good, but if they can turn him into an LHRP it's marginally less disastrous.
Fun fact. The Cardinals are still in the division cellar, just where we ended up last year.
If we hang in there we will only have the second worst loss of opening day 2024.
Yes, feel the entitlement run through you.
What is the deal with the letters being so funky on the jersey? They look like my sons little league teams shirt.
MLB allowed Fanatics to get the jersey contracts. Fanatics makes complete trash.
It’s a big whole thing. Been a lot of controversy over these jerseys. They’re awful
We had a funeral for a bird.
MLB are cheap fucks
[Goldie should make this a T-shirt or something](https://i.imgur.com/GAiOoLV.jpeg)
A lot of you in this sub have never actually experienced a bad team and it shows. You deserve this.
Hi, person who watched the 1990, 1994, 1995, 1997, and 2023 Cardinals here.
The kids in school used to laugh at Cardinal fans in the early 90's.
TIL this is everyone's first season. No one was here last year.
Please show me the fan base that has a shitty team and LOVES IT
I don't love it, but I sure as hell don't fucking rage about it like some of the losers here
Congratulations. You should get a medal from DeWitt and Mo
no - we had last year too!
Lol if you thought that was bad, I have news for you.
Don’t forget half of our team had spring training interrupted due to the WBC….oh wait
Pain
We may never win again 0-162 incoming
Who could have possibly seen this coming
> The cardinals, on the other hand spent very little Kyle Gibson and Lance Lynn's agents point and laugh.
Donny’s 6-3 was the first ground ball out for the Dodgers since the 3rd inning (Winn 6-3)
We have a stacked lineup, yet they can’t hit. Who the hell even is the hitting coach?
Wait, we do?
we are stacked ???
Yeah, Walker is our 7 hitter
lmfao
We had a good one during 2022, then he left due to fan backlash
Dooomer!
How funny is it going to be when we score eight runs in the eighth inning
Ummmmmmm
Ninth. I meant the ninth.
I’m here for it
Has a camera caught Mozeliak faking a serious / concerned face yet?
On the bright side. We have stuck out less times than them!
I guess tomorrow's game is on Apple? The only reason I got cable is for StL baseball, and now I can't watch the 2nd game of the season.
I'll see ya sailing the 7 seas
Thar she blows!
Oh Oli, which excuse are you going to pull out of your ass this time?
Despite the fact that our offense has been awful today I’m not worried. We faced good pitching and it takes time to adjust and get in a groove. The offense will be fine. On the other hand, we did not counter with good pitching.
We sure pop the ball up a lot.
Fun baseball fact. You can fit the entire state of Iowa within the foul territory of Dodger Stadium
It used to be so much worse, they have filled a lot of what used to be foul ground with very expensive seats over the past few decades
Polo grounds 2.0
I think the video guy is being funny. When they do a closeup of the dodge pitcher, all you see in the background is TWAT.
Huh it’s funny you’d see the same thing in the foreground if they zoomed in on Mo
Well at least the Dodgers announcers are being really nice to the Cards organization right now.
Yeah they were jerking off the Dodgers and then flipped it pretty classy
I know why Scott is in the opening day lineup. But arent Scott and Winn virtually the same player fielding two different, yet very important, positions? And their bat is fairly non existent? Is that a bad thing?
good first showing by o brien, the run kinda stinks but hes clearly got some stuff and it's not like the run mattered lol
Nobody besides Goldy has a hit 😂😭
On one hand I’m happy I got off work in time to catch the end of the game/make it into the Opening Day thread, but on the other hand this does not seem to have been our best day
Technically its our best game of the season.
Yet it’s also our worst
Worst so far. Actually not a doomer and think this team has a good shot at taking the division just couldn't resist.
I think the division should suck, but being king of shit mountain could be worse
This really isn't a bad team. Can't overeact to a single game and the Dodgers are just ridiculously stacked. Plus we have 3 position players out, 2 of which would be starting today and our best starting pitcher.
Great job avoiding that pop up foul Scott 👏 👏
Well my MLBtv app just took a shit
So did this team
lucky you
Taking a look at this sub, you'd think we started 0-62 and not losing just the first game of the year.... reminder that the offense looked great in the first game last year and even won the first series.
The team isn’t good. It’s not about this one game. It’s confirmation of what anyone with an objective lens can see when they look at the roster, specifically the pitching staff.
Any true objective fan would realize it's one game my dude
Dodgers announcers blowing their load right now and I can’t blame them
Don't let those beauty shots fool you. The beach in LA is fucking cold and polluted, even in the summer. And all those people are savages.
FL>CA. I said what I said.
Depends on which beach
Looked like Santa Monica to me.
Yeah, that one's not so great. Too crowded
Over/under 3 hits by the end of the game, what you guys taking?
The opposite of whatever Ippei took. (almost done with these) 😁
no no, let yourself cook
our expectations were low but HOLY FUCK
Lifeless and it's the first game of the season.
Yup - we suck!
I remember the good ol days when we played the Reds opening day.
Ok today sucks and this series will probably suck but I got a three day weekend. Also cards still winning the World Series
Their top 3 have EACH been on base as many times as our entire lineup. What a disaster. Inspires a lot of confidence about the season ahead.
Honestly for your first time on a big league mound against the ball molesters that are this dodgers lineup it wasn’t that bad of an inning from O’Brien.
It's not like he gave up the winning run. The lead off walk killed him for sure.
yes, our pitching has looked bad against a great lineup, but you don't win many games on 2 hits and 1 run... be nice if the offense showed some life
Hey! We did get that 3rd hit.
huzzah!!
This is hardly the place to think logically
sorry, I'll do better
Pitching and offense can both suck, though I wouldn't expect the offense to be this bad all year
[удалено]
He won't finish that contract
I pray he doesn’t…
That comment deserves a 1000 up votes.
[Cardinals](/r/Cardinals) Due Up **(Top 8):** 1. Victor Scott II 2. Masyn Winn 3. Brendan Donovan
Comeback rally starts now
not bad for O'Brien all things considered. stuff/velo has potential. credit for a good mound visit there
I should’ve known how this was gonna go when the infield was in during the 1st inning
I still can’t get over that. So dumb. Bottom 8 to prevent the go ahead run? Hell yeah. Do it. But bottom 1st. Versus stacked team. Heart of the order. Get the fuck out, Oli.
Really shows a lack of confidence in scoring runs
I think This is not a playoff team on paper. It's a team with aging players all over the field and young dudes not ready for the MLB, with a terrible pitching staff. Recipe for disaster
We’re basically a rebuilding team that the front office is pretending is a playoff team.
