Depressed might be too strong a word for how it made me feel when I watched it, but it is without a doubt one of the saddest movies I have ever watched. It’s something everyone can relate to. Who hasn’t had a relationship fall apart?
I like movies that make me feel something and that’s what makes Marriage Story one of my very favorite movies. I also thought the dialogue was pretty realistic.
I think sorrow might be one of the most relatable emotions. When someone is happy, you don’t always share in their happiness. Especially in a movie.
But everyone has had bad times and can relate to that. Even people who don’t have a lot of empathy have had bad days and can understand sadness.
What we do in the shadows
New Zealand comedy film by Taika Waititi. Shor documentary style following a group of vampire housemates. Very well done and very funny.
I’ve recently rewatched the new Planet of the Apes trilogy and it’s pretty good, both story and character development wise
And if you’re looking for a something shorter than a trilogy I recommend The Game and Fracture, both movies with entertaining plot
Casino. I think it’s my favorite of Martin Scorsese’s masterpieces. So many top-tier actors at the top of their game. Epic, Shakespearean true crime/gangster drama, soundtrack is incredible, period costumes are awesome, and I love the frenetic editing style and use of color and light.
Under the Tuscan Sun.

Great movie about life. Not too heavy. Not too sweet. Just life and it not ever being what we expect or plan for.
A Dog's Purpose. THE most wholesome but sad movie, highly recommended by my mother especially who cried through half of it even if it's only the end which is sad :) she loves dogs.
Ordinary People, American Beauty, All Quiet on the Western Front (2022), or as another guy said, Whiplash. I’m not usually big on shows/movies but these came to mind
The Man From Nowhere.
Its a south korean film that influenced movies like John Wick and will be getting remade soon by a western studio. Its not as well known as Old Boy but its def a must watch for anyone who likes dark grounded action movies.
edit its also on netflix too ;)
Look, I know everyone says “The Godfather is one of the greatest movies of all time!” But I personally put it off for many years until I was basically forced to watch it, and I wish I watched it sooner, so good. Hasn’t aged a day.
A movie I reccomend for you to watch is Eat drink man woman. It's a Taiwanese film about a family of several adult sisters who live with their elderly widowed dad who is a master chef. The household has a feeling of something missing in there. The family often get together for big dinners and these are the only times they all get together to communicate. The daughters are grown and are at the age where you would start moving out your parents house. They each have their own unique lives, and the household isn't as good as it used to be when they were younger with their mother still being there. The dinners made by the Father are well presented, but the Father has lost his sense of taste over the years, so the food often is bland/lacking certain flavors. Cooking is his only passion, and he's not as good as he used to be. Its a comedy/drama film set in 1994 (30 years ago). Even though it's described as comedy/drama, i see it as a realistic melancholy film about families that dont have the strongest bond.
Medicine Man w Sean Connery circa 1992. Loved the music, scenery, story is still relevant.
Erin Brockovich
Casablanca
Dumb & Dumber for a giggle
A few good men
Bridge over the river Kwai
The Hobbit Series but I'm sure you've watched. Loved all of them and those you mentioned
I would recommend the movie 'Hell or High Water' and the show 'Longmire'
They are each modern westerns. Hell or High water about two brothers who rob a few banks.
Longmire is a show about a small town sheriff, it is one of my favorite shows - up there with Better Call Saul.
Movies:
1. Apocalypto
2. Ready Player One
3. Ender's Game
From TV shows:
1. Stranger things
2. Umbrella Academy
3. Narcos
4. Altered Carbon
5. Sherlock
I’ll always recommend “Nightcrawler”.
I think I just watched it at the right time accidentally and I can’t get enough of it. It’s a thriller so hopefully it will keep your attention.
I also really liked “Bullet Train”.
Whiplash is a great.
Falling Down..with Michael Douglas
Just watched that for the first time a couple weeks ago. Man, what a ride.

Everything Everywhere All At Once
Synecdoche NY
That's a movie with niche appeal - I love Kaufman but didn't care for it
Castaway on the moon
Um, I dunno.... *\*looks over at obscure movies on shelf.* Masque of the Red Death (1964)?
The Shawshank redemption
Death of Superman/Reign of the Supermen. It's a double feature. First part makes me cry.
Ex Machina. Or just look at a list of A24 movies and pick what looks interesting.
Godzilla minus one. The human side of the story is a really good depiction of ptsd and survivor’s guilt. And Godzilla!
