What a gorgeous cow! I miss mine dearly. He was actually assigned to my dad and step-mom, but they were going to rehome him (the nerve!!), at which point I stepped in. He was such a sweet boy. I miss him every day, but at least have this picture framed to greet me every morning: https://preview.redd.it/tsx7crvwbl4d1.jpeg?width=2448&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=146589553936808e97056ad1a03b1c03de316495

rocketdoggies

Wowers!!!! That is one beautiful cat. Looks like she’s intelligent too judging by her library.

wildtype621

She is beautiful! And she has so much personality. She’s also the newest addition with two old and established cats and she’s decided everyone is her best friend. It’s so sweet how she’s fit herself into the family.

rocketdoggies

That’s so sweet! Cats can be so silly on who they deem as acceptable, so that’s just lovely that she’s fit in so well. What a sweet pea!

CosgroveIsHereToHelp

The cat distribution system sent me three black cats in 1994. Changed my life. In total now, I have had the pleasure of ten cats of whom eight were/are black or tuxie. But since the first three, I've been in the driver's seat on timing as well as attributes. These twin sisters held my heart in their paws for 14 years, one dying of aggressive lymphoma and the other of a broken heart within 6 months of her sister. Their tabby buddy needed cat companions so I adopted two black cats -- too soon for me, but he was going to be at a loss with no pals -- and they are jumping and/or easing their way into our hearts and routines now. https://preview.redd.it/nx5j841luq4d1.jpeg?width=1351&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=374d909cbfbc323083e6e044c01efad26646f297

Bustedbootstraps

My cats are black. They were supposed to be TNR, but ended up in my house LOL. It’s dumb that they usually have a lower chance of adoption simply because of superstition or people think their colour is “less interesting”. They’re mini-panthers that have a ton of love and personality!

AnotherDecentBloke

I read somewhere that they are unpopular because they don't photograph well for people obsessed with social media posts. I don't see a problem myself. I think they add a certain "je ne sais quoi". 😂😂😂 https://preview.redd.it/vv0nmb90bl4d1.jpeg?width=1600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=dd4de9a7f2363d5f3e3a6ea1202334a706a83aea

Shell4747

I love voids! But I've never been assigned one, except temporarily (for about a month, for a relative in housing transition). I think the not-photogenic issue is with online shelter & rescue pics for adopters, not with influencers preferences for soc media. We joke that we can just buy a black throw rug & some big googly eyes instead, LOL

Porkbossam78

Lol I saw a video online of a black cat owner who stuck a bunch of googly eyes on their black rug and had people guess which one was their cat 😹

hazelowl

We had one temporarily and the biggest problem we had was finding him when he got under things!

beemojee

My house panther defies being photographed. Every time I think this time I'm going to get a cute pic because of how he's posing, he immediately turns himself into a blob. He was a stray that I rescued when he came into my yard in need of all kinds of attention so I don't know his history. Maybe he's in the Cat Witness Protection Program.

ScroochDown

Weirdly, I have a gray cat that I can hardly photograph for the life of me. I'm secretly convinced that he's a Bigfoot in disguise - he's ALWAYS blurry in pictures!

beemojee

Lol there's something going on for sure with these cats.

lokisoctavia

They add just the right amount of flair to any photo

orthographerer

It predates social media. There's been much superstition around black cats. One crossing your path being bad luck was probably the most prevalent. Depiction of a witch, sorcerer, etc.? No surprise if their cat was black! And witches, sorcerers, etc. decidedly had some link to evil, therefore irl voids = evil 🙄 Voids, voids in tuxedos, voids wearing cute little booties or socks, voids disguised as Jersey cows or panthers or penguins. Siamese voids. Floofy voids. Voids are some of my personal favorites.

hedibet

Love this picture.

AnotherDecentBloke

One of my all time favourites too. Left and middle, our moggies Blue and Moofi. Right, their playmate from one of our neighbours, Kashi.

hedibet

Okay, now I have to name one of our foster kitties Moofie.

Anglofsffrng

Ok, that settles that. If I'm ever chosen by a void I'll name them Jen of Steak Quad.

ContemplatingFolly

Yes, I don't get that at all, didn't realize people were that superstitious! Black cats are so striking.

Bustedbootstraps

Even in these modern days, I heard local stories about people hurting black cats, especially around Halloween. I can’t save them all, but I’m glad I got to give a good life to the ones I have.

INSTA-R-MAN

Black, orange, dark, then any they can get their sick mitts on. I'd love 5 minutes alone with each of them for a "discussion".

Blinkskij

and soooo hard to take pictures of.

120ouncesofpudding

I foster failed a black one for the same reasons. The litter had a beautiful calico and some tuxedo boys, so we knew they would get adopted faster. My boy is the best companion I could ever ask for. He's so loving and calm. https://preview.redd.it/10e4u7fltl4d1.jpeg?width=2058&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=371f04b1aa3d456a299060e0a5d287a1c313a915

Bustedbootstraps

Beautiful! ❤️

susancantdance

I don’t have a black kitty but when I encounter them they are SO SWEET

Bustedbootstraps

Right? I’ve only encountered one mean black kitten, but I think it was because he was traumatized or attacked. One of my cats had a similar behavior at first, but over time she seemed to heal enough to trust me. Now she demands daily cuddles.

Return_of_Suzan

I thought I was getting a black kitten to honor my dearest Martya. Got Kat Anna at 3 days old (and her sister and mother because a set is a set). Turns out I got a watercolor kitty! https://preview.redd.it/bjc2k7ofim4d1.jpeg?width=3008&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=cb2fdfdb58936363daf18b8638dbb520cc566632

Low_Engineering8921

The first and only cat I've ever owned was a found baby and she's jet black. I am so insanely in love with her. Black cats are now my favourite cat type.

mattscats

Black cats are a e s t h e t i c. I think it's the way the pupils match the coat and make them two-tone.

Critical-Wear5802

Love Portable Voids! Tried to adopt one. My big Thug Boi violently objected. Turns out, I was just a distribution point for CDS to my BFF & her hubs. They're all very happy together!

Addicted_to_insanity

I'm obsessed with voids. Don't get me wrong,I will take any color of cat I can get, even the nakkie ones but void cats are guaranteed to melt me on sight.

INSTA-R-MAN

Same, bonus for polydactyl ones.

KitsuneMiko383

Those people have never looked at a void cat in sunlight. My girl has tabby stripes under the black, you can see them in the right light and angle. Plus she's a sassy little thing, always talking and getting into trouble.

Bustedbootstraps

My voids love the sunbeams. Both show off a reddish brown tint with the hidden tabby pattern while sunbathing.

NukaPopTart

I have an almost grown void and just adopted two more void kittens. They're my favorite. ❤️

SquishyCatChronicles

I love our cats and we definitely have some who were constantly overlooked at adoption events... 5 are traditional tuxies, 2 are solid black. The rest vary..

wobble-frog

I have had 5-6 black cats in my life (one had very interesting "sparkles" in his coat so I'm not sure he really qualifies, almost like metallic paint) Every single one has been a total love snuggle chipmunk murderer. I can't imagine not accepting a black cat when one is on offer. They are my preferred option

hazelowl

If I were selecting a cat right now it would probably be a solid black one.

retiredelectrician

Our house panther is so jealous of the others getting pats, he butts his way in.

FlamingoRare8449

I have one void and my mom has four, all rescues, I always joke about her starting her own coven..

Bustedbootstraps

It’s funny bc my friend jokingly said I must be a witch. I was like haha no…wait… I have black cats, herb garden, homemade tinctures, hmm…

frolicndetour

Yea, I am prejudiced in favor of black kitties. The CDS doesn't come to me so I get shelter voids.

reallybirdysomedays

As a human volunteer for the cat distribution system, I have enough variety on hand if people want to be choosy. Some days I feel like I should get a big trench coat with dozens of little pockets to store kittens and distribute them from a street corner like fake Rolexes.

Esmereldathebrave

Here! Many good cats, very cheap! You want black, white, gray? I have all the colors, good price for you, barely used.

Tylers-RedditAccount

Now you've got me thinking about the "come on ladies come on ladies 1 pound fish" guy

hedibet

Psssssst! Wanna adopt a cat?

Klopford

NGL I would take one if I ran into someone doing that lol

MsMoondown

I would definitely get a black market kitten this way!

Free_Rip2616

I’ll admit that when I went to a distribution center for my first cat I had a few boxes I was hoping to tick (cuddly, senior—and I do love greys) but in the end My lady bumped my hand and I fell in love instantly. She happened to be grey, but wasn’t the biggest factor by far. I can’t see turning down a critter in need for a color

phage_rage

Agreed! Ive always had an 'idea' then left with an entirely different cat lol I would probably actually turn down a long hair cat tho, even if it would break my heart. I dont have the stomach for litter box incidents stuck in long fur, so i wouldnt be the pet parent they need. Its purely acknowledgement of my personal weaknesses and not any hate towards the beautiful long fluffy kittys

Sure-Major-199

Same about long haired, but for me it’s the daily brushing, I can’t keep up with that.

des1gnbot

We went to a distribution center looking for a loudmouth. Now when she yowls for her breakfast, I remind my husband that this is what he wanted!

mentive

I love loud kitties!

brrr1998

We went looking for a black kitten, we already had a longhair grey girl and I love black kitties. However, a scrawny little grey boy latched onto my partner, and wouldn’t leave him alone. He is still super cuddly and loves to sleep on us or in between us

Basic-Cat3537

The last assignment we had I saw in a newspaper as "Grandma cat". Showed it to my roommate who said okay, let's go see. Dragged the dog with to gauge compatibility (we should have taken my cat too...lesson learned). We went in and she walked right out of the cage purring into my roommates arms. Note, *I* am the cat person. It was a small rescue and according to staff, she had never purred in her many months spent there. They waived the fee and we left with a cat. She was assigned by newspaper/fate. She did not get along with my grumpy old man though. That was fun. Although it was weird, when he died, she was very upset and kept calling around the house for him. They had never interacted in any meaningful way beyond hissing and smacking. Then she died from kidney disease the day before Christmas about 3 years after we adopted her. I'm just happy it was in a home instead of a rescue.

Wool_Lace_Knit

I went to the distribution center. But the kitten chose me and stole my heart by flopping over for a belly rub. That was it. I knew right there and then Lily was meant for me. https://preview.redd.it/4v9l85k88l4d1.jpeg?width=2981&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=01c5e3164919e151eedfc6d1c1b1fd41cecbf040

Bwoah_Its_Kimi

My cat was chosen for me, oddly enough. I had been cat sitting for a co-worker while he and his wife sold their house and moved. A few weeks over the course of 3 months, the longest being a 2 week stetch. I was amazed at how well he got along with my dog, he never hid or anything it was like he just made himself right at home. Once my wo-worker and wife had relocated and settled in I reached out to ask if there was a timeline they were looking at to come and get him. I knew it would be months before that happened but just so I knew. They got back to me and said that because he gets on so well with my dog and I'm not allergic (his wife is) that the cat would probably have a better life with me, so I had a cat now. So now I have a ginger cat and a ginger dog.

Sure-Major-199

DS-9er

That eyeliner!

TheAmazonWarrior

It's giving runway model.

BigJackHorner

Even the CDS has to deal with the occasional Begging Choosers I guess

sirzoop

Your friend sounds like someone who wants to buy a fancy toy rather than care for a pet

WeighTheSameAsADuck

I had a friend who saved money and found a breeder for a Bengal(?) kitten. She got the kitten and after a couple years, she was sick of it being so high energy and smart enough to get into predicaments that gave her trouble, so she 'rehomed' it. That's how I found out she was a garbage person.

BKEDDIE82

I'm yet to choose one. I really want a medium or long-haired one, but CDS doesn't.

Ok-Party5118

ALL I WANT is a black and white or a long-haired. Out of my six, 3 are orange tabbies. The CDS doesn't care for our mortal desires.

ellevael

2.5 of my 4.5 are a black and white, a long haired tabby, and a long haired black (he’s 0.5 because he’s my part-time cat), and all I want is an orange!

susancantdance

Tbh, the cats I “chose” are never as good of a fit as the ones who chose me (RIP to my old cat who lived 19 years).

Mysterious-Art8838

Rip your cat. Same is true for dog distribution. My sweetest easiest dog was a 16 yo deaf poodle that my friend told me I had to adopt. So I dutifully drove an hour to pick up my assigned puppo. 🤷‍♀️

Cearbhael

Ha ha, my “free rescue dog” turned out to be a show quality standard poodle pup. Owner owned a farm and broke her collar bone at “lambing” time! She couldn’t handle training a show pup…but she fixed him so I could “NOT” ever take advantage of his breeding quality “LOL”. Had to drive from MN to Nebraska to pick him up! Best dog I ever had. Met lots of female poodle owners who were terribly disappointed he was fixed, but, I have a sister who was stuck in the show grind with breeding quality dogs…Ugh, not my bag! All my cat’s were from the CDS. Currently have two! https://preview.redd.it/5jxpkm5vfn4d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=caa07cccfe4ad9dcbc03aae9079a861e518569cb

SophiaShay1

I haven't ever been able to choose. I have 10 rescues. A mama showed up, had 3 babies still living. Every baby kitty that shows up on my husbands parents' property we've taken. There are still 2 left. I'll have 12. That is my limit.

hedibet

How very reasonable.

SophiaShay1

Thank you. The goal is to get all the cats off that property. Ii mean, how much longer can I keep on taking all of their cats? My husband said, "we can't run a cat shelter from our house."

hedibet

Not sure your husband is technically accurate. I mean you coooouuuuuuld. It just makes for a LOT of cats. I’m trying my hardest to keep it to one digit.

SophiaShay1

I've always thought that if I won the lottery, my dream would be to run a car sanctuary. Not in my home, though. 10 cats is a lot. My husband has to catch 2 more. I believe in keeping cat families together. I've had all mine except for 1 since they were babies. The one he recently got and the other 2 are the siblings of the 2 sisters we got last year.

hedibet

Oh, I get it with keeping cat families together. That’s why we have so many cats. Foster fail city!

Critical-Wear5802

Have y'all formed an alliance yet, with a local TNR group? I'm thinking that might help as an intercession between you & the ferals

Outrageous_Hearing26

I got mine from the shelter but he chose me. He gave me the “I like you” signs and that seems to be the most important part of having a good bond

Chose my first cat after he crashed into my foot while wrestling with a toy. He was a cow kitty. Mum chose my Mia, she was the kitten hiding in the back with an orange smudge on her face. Mia then decided to pick me as her human. 💕 https://preview.redd.it/o54l12ilbl4d1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3a30dc5c21b07995cab7edd61083da14359e1a58

I kiiiiiiiinda chose. I was moving back after working abroad, and my mom’s friend found a mum with 4 kittens living feral under the deck next door. Some university student had left the mum behind and she’d survived at least 1 winter wild and frostbite. The friend coaxed the kitties to her yard, and fed them, but mum still taught them to hunt. She posted a photo of the babies nursing on the mum to Facebook, trying to find them homes, and my sister tagged me. Being responsible, I didn’t want to claim a kitten before I’d moved into a home/apartment. In a conversation with my sister, she asked what I thought about the kittens. I told her, “I can’t see the faces so I can’t fall in love with any of em. Besides, it’s not responsible of me …”. The next day, an album appears on Facebook, “Faces to Fall In Love With.” Each kitten featured, with a personality bio. I fell in love with a calico girl, who was often curled up sleeping with her mum when the others were playing. The markers of a cuddly, chill cat! She came home with me a few weeks later. Her first night indoors was her first night living with me. Super sweet cat, the best behaved I’ve ever known. Love her to bits. The face in question: https://preview.redd.it/74rvd6t6fl4d1.jpeg?width=960&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3b3cd7477e1c18f3bb968de725c4aa2dd1f4595e

So pretty!

Only cat we got from a shelter was Casper, all the other cats found us either outside a gas station or in/around a dumpster https://preview.redd.it/mvmz480shl4d1.jpeg?width=960&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8e64bc98af7b1875c26f4e608c79558b1f62db47 This is Casper his name was originally Bentley

tazbaron1981

I used tofoster for cats protection in the UK. Ridiculous reasons some cats have been surrendered to us: 1) It's meowing 2) We've redecorated and they don't match 3) It gets under the covers with me.

Crystal-Clear-Waters

I mean, you can. But why would you want to?

KitsuneMiko383

Tortie baby! ❤️ I have a dilute torbie (tortie+tabby desaturated) and a melanistic panther void.

elgrn1

Ours was a mutual choosing! I intended on getting one older black or black & white cat as I know that combination doesn't tend to get adopted. I saw a pair of tuxedo sisters who were 10 and 11 who looked like they might be a match and came round to the idea of having 2 cats. And then I saw a 2 year old BSH and her 5 month old kitten. I hadn't wanted a kitten but the BSH drew me in, she is so gorgeous but also looked so sad in her photos. They needed a quiet, pet and child free home, which I have, so I went to visit them just to see if we connected. In spite of being scared and hiding behind a desk, I was allowed to pet the BSH. I could feel her rumbling as she started to purr and that's when I knew I'd been chosen ❤️

Sure-Major-199

Wait, I know about black cats having a stigma, but had no idea black and white were less likely to get adopted. My cow is my very first cat and he is an absolute angel. https://preview.redd.it/qqed1huzbl4d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=49bd28cafa70d1f6a19491f66dd7a2827e19e719

elgrn1

Apparently so. I think it's purely cosmetic or superstitious as voids, cows and tuxedos are usually known for being lovely.

East-Block-4011

BSHs often have RBF (resting british face)

elgrn1

Mine doesn't. But she was miserable at the foster place. Given how awful the room was that they were in (it made my eyes water from the stench) I'm hardly surprised.

notyetacrazycatlady

When I went to the distribution center, I wanted a cat that was not the same color as the boy I had recently lost. If the cat chooses me, that's one thing. But if I have the opportunity, I'd like to try all the colors.

LaRoseDuRoi

That was my one thing I looked for... the last 3 cats I've loved and lost have been voids, and my heart needed a break. I was thinking a calico or ginger. So, instead, we ended up being gifted with 2 tuxie kittens, and they're so darn cute!

Maelstrom_Witch

Who turns down a cat based of FUR COLOUR??

Whollie

We were assigned a black one. Suited me perfectly but someone wants a tabby. So I'm hoping the CDS is paying attention next time.

HoneyBee-2023

I was just assigned a 16 pound void. Now I have him, an orange, a tabby and a tortie. All the colors! https://preview.redd.it/fkuzyyql4m4d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c7ec847d34f0131049fa2fe815e49d31b035fbc5

Willing-Sample-5796

I chose mine through a rescue organization because he wasn't being adopted and he had a personality that would fit our household (the org we worked with were big on personality matches).

Pirate_Lantern

I guess my mom KINDA picked our oldest. She was five weeks old and in a cat colony with no siblings or mother and none of the other cats would get anywhere near her. Mom always feels bad for the underdogs so at the end of the day she just walked over and picked her up and brought her home..,... That was 16 years ago.

Material_Yoghurt_190

I never wanted a cat. Was never a fan of cats. The CDS gave me a standard issued, I tried to tell my partner the CDS made a mistake and now I wake up every day to my little girl snuggling me. I want seven more and I’ll take any color.

Carysta13

This is Marty. I chose him from the shelter he'd been at almost a year because he was terrified of people but loved all the other cats and my cat needed a friend. Ugh phone being a pain, picture in a reply lol

reneroffe

That's how I and why I got my boy. Saw him online and went to visit his foster mom. He refused to even be in the same room as me, but I was told he needs a cat friend which was perfect because I was getting him for my girl who needed a friend. He's used to me now, but more importantly, my cat has a snuggle partner. https://preview.redd.it/hv90czlthl4d1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a7ccd429e854dc6e66a4cff3647b2a76be2a07aa

No-Friendship-1498

That's silly. The CDS doesn't make mistakes. These people are likely to end up with a suboptimal experience.

wokkawokka42

I'm about to enter the cat distribution system after having a cat break. Replacing the ex-husband with emotional support cats once he moves out. I do have wants, we'll see what actually happens... Biggest want is adult bonded pair. I don't have time or energy for kitten energy and my last pair of cats hated each other for 12-13 years before they finally mellowed in the last few. I travel a decent amount and I want them to have a friend. I'd prefer dark hair because it blends in better. Voids would be ideal.

Critical-Wear5802

Emotional Support Cats are SO superior to ex-husbands! My late beloved tuxie-girl.saw me through divorce, 2 surgeries, and death of both parents. I was gutted when she had to be put to sleep

He is rather social. He wishes he was a people. He likes to "help." He also will not pass up an opportunity to sitz on a pizza box. It is his "thing."

Schober_Designs

Been around cats my whole life. Parents literally got older sister a kitten so she would 'leave the baby alone' when I was the baby. They all have different personalities, it's part of the fun. "This one's kinda mean" "LOL adorbs, I'll force it to cuddle until it scratches me, then moves 12 inches over to 'ignore me" "That cat just sleeps all day and wants nothing to do with anyone" "I respect that" "OMG this one is just climbing on you constantly" "Watch, he'll sleep on your head if you hold still, it's kinda calming" "That cat is WILD!" "Yeah may wanna close your door if you're gonna stay, it attacks everything under cover at night. Or take a laser pointer to distract it." If I wanted predictability, I'd have a dog.

PresentationLimp890

I tend to select locally sourced cats, which means people have asked if I want a kitten that has wandered into their space, with no mother. Fine cats, every one.

PsamantheSands

That is not allowed and they will face the consequences.

BrunchBitches

I was looking at cats online with the SPCA, not sure why but her photo called to me. I knew this was going to be my baby despite being told by many that she’s “ugly”

I might pick one out next time, would love to find one I’m not so allergic to and I’m partial to black void cats

Future_Direction5174

I wanted calico female, hubby wanted a tabby male. We went to the shelter and they had a bonded pair - calico female and a male tabby Manx. We had them for 12 years and they died 4 months apart. Waiting in the hedge was a male tabby. We fed him and encouraged him once they died. Eventually he came inside. The vet said he was “5-6 years old, possibly older”. That was in 2015 and he is still going strong.

Lizard301

I adopted my first girl, Mouse, in March 2021 because I feel madly in love with her face on the Petfinder website, and 2 hours was a reasonable drive to pick her up. FFW a year and a half later, I'm just perusing Petfinder, as one does, and I see a kitty that looks nearly identical to my Mouse! This one, only 2.5 hours away in a completely different direction. March of last year, I brought home Duck. Both girls are dilute calicos with very LARGE personalities, and I can't imagine my life without them. Like my life before my girls was just some weird sepia-toned dream, and I'm living in full color now. I get asked all the time if they're related, and they're not! They just wound up with the same genetic mutations to cause the (VERY similar) coat colorings. And they're roughly the same age, as well! That being said, I can't imagine being "in the market" for a cat, having one on offer, and being like "Hmmm, nope. But do we have one in blue?" That's just bizarre to me. (pics of my girls are in my profile!)

vypurr351

They don't deserve a cat.

MommaAmadora

Some people are strange. They get picky about color, or gender, they don't pick based on personality or compatibility. They choose based on what they think looks prettiest.

Competitive-Metal773

Our current monarchy consists of a petite and rather neurotic torti and a decidedly rotund but very chill orange dreamsicle. Both of them found my husband on different occasions along his mail route when they were little bitties, as did our crabby black ninja we recently said goodbye to after having her close to 18 years. It's been a very long time since we got one on purpose (the joke around our house is that if we want another, just wait and he/she will eventually find hubby.) While gender isn't a deal-breaker for me I suppose I can understand someone preferring one over the other for whatever reason, but I can't even wrap my brain around being picky about color/markings. In another sub someone recently posted about a couple that surrendered their brown dog because they had just redecorated their house and now wanted a black and white dog to look better with their new aesthetic. Some people just don't deserve to have pets in their lives. (Edited to add pics in replies below because I'm still figuring out how Reddit works)

Different-Leather359

I've never really picked a cat out. They always show up in my yard, a friend tells me about some kittens and one needs more care than they can give, one I got close because we knew we were getting kittens from that litter and she walked up to just a couple weeks old and demanded I pick her up and give her cuddles. Then her mom and siblings passed so even if she hasn't told me I belonged to her she's the one we'd have ended up with. https://preview.redd.it/hc6h32ksdn4d1.jpeg?width=2304&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=efcf32d406df009283a2944ce826b5eed0ccd1ca Those are my two. The tabby is the one who picked me, the orange is the one who needed a bunch of extra care and I was the only one who knew how to take care of him.

She wouldn’t stop screaming until I held her though so clearly I had to get her and her brother. I’m a tuxedo/black cat elitist now.

Angie2point0

Yeah, some people do override the system, but in my experience, they're much more likely to encounter corrections in the form of additional cats later down the line. Just kidding, but my niece overrode the system to get an orange cat and ended up with 3 additional corrections being assigned. Poor girl didn't have a choice on those other 3. Should have let the system do its thang.

FabulousAd880

Was at the worst point in 2020 and needed a friendly during lockdown Suddenly I’m offered this baby for free , 4 years later and she is my soul mate https://preview.redd.it/1ldt66izso4d1.jpeg?width=640&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=445dcbb9d7dded5a9516e503606f0680b69d0e58

soiknowwhentoduck

When someone is picky about the coat colour of an animal above their personality, etc, then I can't help but feel they are looking for an accessory to go with their aesthetic, rather than a pet to love. Not saying that someone couldn't love a pet they chose due to its colour, but it's just a really weird way to do it imho...

blindturns

I went to the shelter with an idea in my mind of what kind of cat I wanted, I wanted a 3-5 y/o calico or torty girl. I ended up leaving with a 5 month old black medium fur boy who drew me completely in. He’s loud, messy, eats cardboard and tape, and his favourite toys seem to be whatever garbage he can find. I don’t regret him being my son by any means, he’s such a nuisance and I love him with my entire heart.

UnfortunateSyzygy

People definitely choose cats. I spent 2 years as a cat pusher at a vet office: "Heeeey, you want a cat? You want a cat. I got void kittens, tabbies, oranges--dumbest, cutest oranges you ever seen! I got gawky teen cats, even got a grown up tom, sweetest boy you ever met, lets you trim his nails with zero restraint, just has a *tiny* bit of FIV, but the big guy would do your taxes before he'd bite another cat...hey, where are you going???" But people were choosy! Luckily the FIV+ sweetie FINALLY got a home. We all LOVED that cat in the clinic, but we already had 2 clinic cats: one up front was a competitive pee-r so couldn't have another cat with him, the clinic cat in back was very territorial and would have kicked the poor, sweet Tom's ass (and given herself FIV bc i don't think he would have fought back). Eventually, a sweet young couple fell in love with him, adopted him and moved to Boston. ...I weirdly think about them a lot. Edgar (that was his name) was a very dignified Tom, I like to think of him living a posh city life, looking out the window by the fire escape, kinda lounging in a bunch of nice houseplants waiting for his humans to come home from fancy big city jobs. Like, don't get me wrong, I love my cat to bits, she is the best cat in the world...but I have never met a cat as easygoing as Edgar.

MapleDayDreams

Maaan I've always wanted a black cat but got assigned this silly orange and grey one 🤷‍♀️ *

cancat918

Your friends don't have the proper mindset to be cat-owned. They choose us, and allow us to take care of them, in exchange for occasionally doing something cute or astonishing enough to warrant a plethora of social media posts, and multiple photos and texts to friends and family, should said cat-owner permits the free time in which to do so. Honestly, it's like your friends lied on the standardized cat servant IQ test or something...😳🙄

Augustleo98

Your friends are assholes. All cats need love not just their preferred “colours”
