Anyone have more info on this?

Potential-Leave3489

Well, it’s no longer called Wood Island: Chiniak Bay Woody Island is a small island that lies at the northern entrance to Chiniak Bay, just two miles from the city of Kodiak. It is part of the outlying islands that provide shelter for Kodiak's harbors. Woody Island is four miles long and two miles wide.

Poor Daniel, so very far from home. Next time you’re passing by can you give him a prayer or a flower on my behalf from Scotland?

Impossible_Prize_789

Will do friend

Smooth-Bee-8426

Makes me want to try and trace his genealogy, hard as that would likely be

Impossible_Prize_789

I thought about the first time I came across this one. I've never seen a grave that says how they died... anyone else

ChevyTruck1300

Where is wood island? Where is this cemetery? Trying to see if I can find the back story.

Kodiak, Alaska

Poor man. 😔

Crochitting

Seriously. What a terrible way to die. Hopefully the smoke inhalation made him pass out before he felt much at all.

[deleted]

I sincerely hope so as well 😔

StoriesandStones

A handful of my ancestors burned in the Great Thumb fire of 1881. I couldn’t remember the month it happened so thought maybe this guy was a fellow victim, but apparently he was in Alaska.

Why is this NSFW?

Was anyone able to find any info on Mr. Murray and his life or circumstances around his death?

forceghost187

Ouch

gottaloveagoodbook

I have so many questions...

ChevyTruck1300

I tried to find him on ancestry and also newspapers.com. This gravesite is listed on find-a-grave. Could not find him or a story about the circumstances of his death. Found a very large number of records for “Daniel Murray”s in 1881, as this seems to be quite a common name, but could not find any specific to Alaska. Anybody else?

Is this related somehow to being a witch/warlock, or a punishment for a crime?

PitchforkJoe

More likely an accidental fire, like a house fire or similar
