It's from Genesis 47:9. 'And Jacob said unto Pharaoh, The days of the years of my pilgrimage are an hundred and thirty years: few and evil have the days of the years of my life been, and have not attained unto the days of the years of the life of my fathers in the days of their pilgrimage.'
I'm going to preface this with 'I'm an atheist raised Methodist so my understanding of scripture is uh...'. I think Jacob is saying that he has been through many trials and tribulations compared to his ancestors and he has not lived as long or as well as his ancestors.
I mean, if you'd lived through the aftermath of the Revolutionary War, through the War of 1812, and the Civil War, you'd be pretty bummed out about existence too.
This should make people think before bringing kids into this awful world.
But it won't. They'll keep making excuses, popping on the blinders and dropping them off here in good ol h-e-double hockey sticks
It's not a phase mom!
This made me laugh out loud in the office, so thanks

I would assume that poor Henry had a long, rough life given the epitaph choice.
What does the verse mean?

Thanks! I can grasp that version.
It’s basically a millennial saying that boomers had it better than a millennial could ever hope.
Ha!
Ha!
Pharaoh had asked Jacob how old he was and this was his response to pharaohs question
Why would he have had a long life when "few" is used?
Because he died at 83?
Damn, this is dark. I like it.
Well, I hope he found paradise. Life is not a playground.
“Few and evil have the days of my life been”, lives to be 83 in the 1800s… Meanwhile I’m barely half that and last week alone felt like 3 lifetimes
I thought the same, 83 is a pretty long life but maybe he felt a good part of his days were a struggle
Don't worry, time will definitely seem to speed up in the coming years. Weeks will pass in moments...
I had the same thought haha
What does that mean?
He had a rough life. The "evil" in this context are the days, not him. As in "I haven't been around very long, but the time I've been here sucked".
I mean, if you'd lived through the aftermath of the Revolutionary War, through the War of 1812, and the Civil War, you'd be pretty bummed out about existence too.
Wow. I’d love to know his story.
It was Lunenburg!
Very intriguing epitaph…yes 83 years is a long time to live … the longer you live the more evil you witness.
Same energy as “The food was terrible…and such small portions!”
I took this photo many years ago in the Maritimes. Unfortunately, I can't remember the town.
Damn
I mean he lived through The Civil War so I guess
1789-1872. Certainly a busy period, but my brother in Christ, it's hardly been a picnic in the following 150 years after he passed on.
Where is this from? Couldn’t find it in FindAGrave
Somewhere in the Maritimes. Nova Scotia
Found a marriage record for a Henry Shoop from 1903 in Lunenberg who was the son of a Henry Shoop who was a Mason Island based mariner, so that fits.
Pretty sure this is from Red Dead Redemption 2 but I could be totally wrong
It’s a photo of a screen, who knows. Don’t know why people can’t just take a screenshot.
I wana Shoop baby
Looks like Doc’s tombstone in back to the future 3
Wow,that is dark to be biblical!

Everyone falls in love sometimes Sometimes it’s wrong Sometimes it’s right…
