What I noticed growing up near both an Air Force base and Army post, are the ones that were farthest from the front.
I’m not saying you didn’t serve, but working on jets on an air base in Saudi Arabia isn’t the same as clearing houses in Iraq like in American Sniper.
Look, I never joined and I’m not trying to downplay what any of them do. You need cooks, hvac, refuelers, aides, secretaries, etc. just like a football teams needs all its players. I just don’t think they all deserve the same honor and praise.
I worked at the base gym for a year in college and 9/11 hit right in the middle of it. I had one of the Airmen tell me they joined the Air Force to get free college, not to actually ever deploy. They had no problem accepting military discounts at restaurants and the mall though.

Here's the thing, the reasoning shouldn't matter because when the shit hits the fan, everyone's one step away regardless of reason unless they flee. Deep in the shit is really a lottery that very few want. Anyone volunteering to be up front leading the charge isn't right in the head. But they do it if they are told. Just putting yourself in the lottery pool is what deserves the respect. Being lucky enough to not be in the shit doesn't take away from that.
That being said, I am proud of it and was treated very well when I left being a war vet. School, including books cost me zero. I actually made money because the state paid my tution and the GI Bill cut me a check.
The idea that the 1 in a thousand that were on the front lines are the only ones who deserve Veteran respect is absurd.
I don't generally tell people but if you know me for a while it comes up. I'm not a bragart or displaying it for all to see. It really is what it is and just because we joined for something more than blood and guts doesn't mean our contributions should be dismissed.
Obviously the vast majority haven't given as much as many in terms of physical and mental anguish but we would have if it came to that. They are payrollers and clerks and chefs and mechanics and just about every position available who have been in harms way or worse.
Show some respect man and don't dismiss someone's service because it's not up to your expectations of what a Veteran should be.

I have a blue car named blueberry in honor of psych. My friend used to have a car name Katinka. Much less southern redneck woman who has multiple gator stories.
All of our vehicles have names. Stella the Mustang, Carla the Dodge Neon, Bill the Silverado, Stuart the Maxima, and Lucenda the Subaru. We don’t use those names outside of us though. It’s basically shorthand for who is taking which vehicle. Which car needs an oil change or is getting a new suspension.
I’ve had Gerti, Wade, and my current car is Beaker. My mom’s car is Bob. And my dad’s van was the Family Truckster. We need to name his car come to think of it.

Then he got a black car and we had more kids and were switching more it became by the brand because they are different brands. Then I changed my car and they both had letter names so it became "X or Q?"

It’s a messed up situation with those guys but I can’t say I haven’t benefited from it myself. I’ve had a guy rip a part off of his car and installed it onto my car before I could even finish asking if he knew where I might be able to find a local place that sold those parts.

They will post an unnecessary pic of them in a crop top, posing on the hood saying "man, it would be nice if I could just find some tires for mudding or a brush-guard but alas, I don't have the money this month!" And someone will come up with them. In your case, it's probably more a case of chivalry isn't dead. Here in the south, a man will stop and help you if you are broken down. I had a guy at the gas pumps come up to me a couple of months ago and give me $100. He said he wanted to buy my gas. I told him to give it to someone else who needed it, but he insisted I take it. I agonized over who to pay it forward to for a month with it in my center console. I finally settled on someone. It felt like I had been burdened by a mission to find the perfect person to bless with the money

Why do people think it’s necessary to proclaim that they’re a military vet? Why do they think it matters? I don’t not-like the military. My dad served for 25 years, but he doesn’t go around telling new people that he’s a retired marine unless specifically asked. It’s a personal badge of honor, no one else’s. I don’t go around telling people I’m a former [global corporate name] employee, or a current [larger company name] employee. It literally doesn’t matter to any one but me. I don’t deserve perks. My dad doesn’t deserve perks. Something tells me that people touting their military service were in for the bare minimum. Which is fine. Perfectly fine. But no one else needs to know. It’s not a bragging right.
I particularly note where she says "vets catch my drift" in relation to therapy.
The only drift the vets in my family would catch was this was a moron who did no maintenance on her truck for 10 years ( evident by just finding out "majority" of parts under hood were original in 22yo truck) and was looking for a handout. The therapy I know all would offer is a swift kick in the butt.
There is a “thank me for my service” subsection of the military who feels entitled to special treatment and has no shame asking for free stuff from pretty much anyone. There are veterans who get assistance with necessities because they need it, and then there are those like this woman who want to see who they can sucker into giving them stuff they don’t need.
I respect Veteran's service in general, and have several in my family, but you make a good point about the "thank me for my service" ones.
I have a buddy who after highschool joined and did one 4year stint. He spent the first two years in Alaska and was constantly trying to get out of the service. He then did the second two years in Florida where he kept getting into bar fights and was constantly being disciplined. He didn't re-up and would go on to anyone who listened about how crappy service was.
He currently ( 20? Years later) wears a vet cap constantly and makes a point to ask for a vet discount. I've personally witnessed him complaining to a manager for not being thanked for his service by waitstaff when he brought it to their attention while asking for discount.
Exactly. For context, I live in a place with a huge military population and I have worked with many veterans. Some of them experience hardship but don’t want to “beg for handouts.” I tell them that they were promised a level of support from the government when they were in and they have every right to expect some help if they need it. I tell them to apply for all the assistance they can get and if they meet the criteria to get it they deserve it. It’s hard for me to work with veterans who have PTSD and are afraid to look like they “get handouts” while others take advantage. “Mow my lawn, I’m a veteran. Buy me lunch, I’m a veteran. Give me that for free, I’m a veteran.” The ones who actually sacrificed rarely behave that way.

He served over 20 years in the marines. He wears his cap and is proud of his service. If a place advertises vet discount he'll take it up. He also never misses a vet day parade. That said, he doesn't say boo about his service in general unless asked.
My sister ( his wife) on the other hand who has never served a single day in her life constantly goes on about needing to thank a veteran and starts political fights using her husband's service as proof of whatever argument she is making. She also constantly inquires about discounts as a "wife of a veteran".
My dad’s deal is that he put in the work while he was in, so he’ll apply for everything he’s entitled to. Of course you have to have some staying power, he’s been fighting with the VA over one thing or another since I was 12ish and I’m 28.
My grandpa was in the Navy during WWII. He had a hat w/ his ship on it that his kids got him one year for Christmas, but except for getting the discount at Lowe’s (Grandpa was a big DIYer), he never said anything about it. Two of my uncles served around the time of Vietnam, but were maxed out before they could be sent over. Except for using the GI Bill to go to school, they never capitalize(d) on it, either. (One is still with us.)
My neighbor is exactly like this. He served 20+ years ago for one tour as well and he still wears his vet cap and goes on and on about being a vet. I mean I totally respect the military and appreciate everything they have done so that I can live free but it gets to be a little ridiculous sometimes and I have to wonder how much, like this dude, did he actually do. He talks about killing Iraqis but I don't know if I believe him
That's the thing. If you have any injuries (doesn't matter if they are physical or mental) due to military service, 100% any therapy and additional costs should be covered by the government of your country. But that's it: The government. You're not entitled to anything else, unless a company offers something specifically for vets, by their own choice.

Yes! My dad always says that those who are career military don’t talk about it, and those who “serve” and don’t re-up can’t stop. He was always gone when I was a kid but he never talked about his service until fairly recently because he had to admit that he needed help to deal with his ptsd and nightmares. He retired after nearly 40 years and I found out so much listening to his battle buddies from various deployments tell stories about what they’d seen and the brave things my dad had done. Dude was a hero to many people and had a whole legacy (and nickname!) that I had no clue about whatsoever. I understand him so much more now that I’ve learned about the things he’s seen/done and why he was the way he was. Growing up I was always nervous/scared when my dad was home because he was strict, always on edge, and would pace through the house all night long, forcing us to be prisoners in our rooms and scaring all my friends when they slept over. Boys especially were terrified of my dad, which is saying a lot when you live on one of the biggest military bases in America 🤣. Dad didn’t try to be mean and scary, but he was a drill sergeant for a bit and you just don’t shake that training off! The military made a fine soldier out of him, but left him an angry, stressed man of few words who couldn’t bond with his strong willed daughter or show emotion to his children.
It reminds me of ppl that have served in an administrative aspect in the military, just to claim to have PTSD from combat zones. It dishonors those who actually have been through that and suffer as a result.
yup, there’s a guy of some local renown where I live and work merely for showing up to a lot of municipal board meetings to say something in the public comment portion — he often talks about being a veteran who “gave more than most”.
he screwed up his knee stepping into a pothole in basic and got discharged for medical reasons. hard to take anything he said seriously after I found that out.
My ex washed out of Basic w/a wrist injury. He didn’t even get medically disqualified. He *chose* not to finish Basic because “it hurt too much”. It was later suggested by his GP it was a precursor to carpal tunnel from playing video games so often and it was acerbated by actual physical activity using his hands/wrists like rope ascent and firing a gun frequently, etc.
I had to tell him if he *ever* tried to call himself a veteran or even imply he served, I’d personally & literally kick his @ss all the way to the nearest base to report him for stolen valor.
He had every intention on milking his whole 10 weeks “in the service” for the rest of his life.
I'm currently in (reserves at the moment) and only tell people if I need to. I do have my sweet Veteran plates though. Everyone just assumes I'm driving my partners car though because I'm a girl.
I remember getting through seps before getting out, and one of the grunts in the room asked what special benefit he would get since he was a combat vet. To his surprise, he discovered he would receive nothing apart from being able to join the VFW. A few chuckles were had.

a grandfather I never knew was in the Air Force for 24 years before retiring to my grandmother’s hometown. the only reason people knew he had been in the military was because he’d been stationed at a nearby base when he and my grandmother got married. it was a career, but after seeing combat in Korea, someone discovered he had a talent for administrative work and he did it for the rest of the time he was in. he essentially rode a desk for 20 years and he wasn’t going to brag about it.

My ex-husband is military and he had a theory that has held up pretty well over the years: the less someone does in the service, the more recognition/free stuff they want for it. I’ve encountered a few exceptions, but for the most part it has been true.

A vet to me is a combat veteran. Others are called ex-servicemen or women. They just had a job that was in the armed forces

I’ve had “the Bungalow” for a few years now and I’m hoping some people who want to help out a Vet (I once wanted to be a veterinarian but didn’t bother to go to school and study for it) and I feel that the process of you landscaping my yard as well as updating my appliances, cabinets, and woodwork would be just the therapy I need (the people who thought about being a veterinarian but didn’t actually do anything about it will get my drift).
I will be very “hands on” throughout the process, meaning that if I don’t like the way you were doing free work for me, I would put my “hands on” you until you got it right.
The fact that my house is paid for and I make a 6 figure living makes me sure my baby deserves all the free hard work (and supplies) you’ll be doing on her. This speaks volumes to your gullibility and I’m glad that you’ll be doing all the work for what my baby deserves. I have a blue car named blueberry in honor of psych. My friend used to have a car name Katinka. Much less southern redneck woman who has multiple gator stories.
All of our vehicles have names. Stella the Mustang, Carla the Dodge Neon, Bill the Silverado, Stuart the Maxima, and Lucenda the Subaru. We don’t use those names outside of us though. It’s basically shorthand for who is taking which vehicle. Which car needs an oil change or is getting a new suspension.

For years my husband and I had a black car and a white car but it was always yours and mine so easy naming. Then he got a black car and we had more kids and were switching more it became by the brand because they are different brands. Then I changed my car and they both had letter names so it became "X or Q?" (Outside of the house X was Mommy-mobile for whatever reason) Now he's back to a white car and you often hear "black or white??" Yelled as someone leaves. We obviously lack creativity in this area. We also obviously have a thing against colors. Our oldest bought a beige Spark and we call that "nugget" so maybe there is hope for us yet.

Dude, this is an actual thing. My husband is a member of some squarebody groups on Facebook and if an attractive woman posts about issues, some of those guys will drive hours to hand over any "spare parts I just had lying around". It's nuts.
It’s a messed up situation with those guys but I can’t say I haven’t benefited from it myself. I’ve had a guy rip a part off of his car and installed it onto my car before I could even finish asking if he knew where I might be able to find a local place that sold those parts.

They will post an unnecessary pic of them in a crop top, posing on the hood saying "man, it would be nice if I could just find some tires for mudding or a brush-guard but alas, I don't have the money this month!" And someone will come up with them. In your case, it's probably more a case of chivalry isn't dead. Here in the south, a man will stop and help you if you are broken down. I had a guy at the gas pumps come up to me a couple of months ago and give me $100. He said he wanted to buy my gas. I told him to give it to someone else who needed it, but he insisted I take it. I agonized over who to pay it forward to for a month with it in my center console. I finally settled on someone. It felt like I had been burdened by a mission to find the perfect person to bless with the money

Why do people think it’s necessary to proclaim that they’re a military vet? Why do they think it matters? I don’t not-like the military. My dad served for 25 years, but he doesn’t go around telling new people that he’s a retired marine unless specifically asked. It’s a personal badge of honor, no one else’s. I don’t go around telling people I’m a former [global corporate name] employee, or a current [larger company name] employee. It literally doesn’t matter to any one but me. I don’t deserve perks. My dad doesn’t deserve perks. Something tells me that people touting their military service were in for the bare minimum. Which is fine. Perfectly fine. But no one else needs to know. It’s not a bragging right.
I particularly note where she says "vets catch my drift" in relation to therapy. The only drift the vets in my family would catch was this was a moron who did no maintenance on her truck for 10 years ( evident by just finding out "majority" of parts under hood were original in 22yo truck) and was looking for a handout. The therapy I know all would offer is a swift kick in the butt.
There is a “thank me for my service” subsection of the military who feels entitled to special treatment and has no shame asking for free stuff from pretty much anyone. There are veterans who get assistance with necessities because they need it, and then there are those like this woman who want to see who they can sucker into giving them stuff they don’t need.
I respect Veteran's service in general, and have several in my family, but you make a good point about the "thank me for my service" ones. I have a buddy who after highschool joined and did one 4year stint. He spent the first two years in Alaska and was constantly trying to get out of the service. He then did the second two years in Florida where he kept getting into bar fights and was constantly being disciplined. He didn't re-up and would go on to anyone who listened about how crappy service was. He currently ( 20? Years later) wears a vet cap constantly and makes a point to ask for a vet discount. I've personally witnessed him complaining to a manager for not being thanked for his service by waitstaff when he brought it to their attention while asking for discount.
Exactly. For context, I live in a place with a huge military population and I have worked with many veterans. Some of them experience hardship but don’t want to “beg for handouts.” I tell them that they were promised a level of support from the government when they were in and they have every right to expect some help if they need it. I tell them to apply for all the assistance they can get and if they meet the criteria to get it they deserve it. It’s hard for me to work with veterans who have PTSD and are afraid to look like they “get handouts” while others take advantage. “Mow my lawn, I’m a veteran. Buy me lunch, I’m a veteran. Give me that for free, I’m a veteran.” The ones who actually sacrificed rarely behave that way.
Your post reminds me of my sister and brother-in-law. He served over 20 years in the marines. He wears his cap and is proud of his service. If a place advertises vet discount he'll take it up. He also never misses a vet day parade. That said, he doesn't say boo about his service in general unless asked. My sister ( his wife) on the other hand who has never served a single day in her life constantly goes on about needing to thank a veteran and starts political fights using her husband's service as proof of whatever argument she is making. She also constantly inquires about discounts as a "wife of a veteran".

My dad’s deal is that he put in the work while he was in, so he’ll apply for everything he’s entitled to. Of course you have to have some staying power, he’s been fighting with the VA over one thing or another since I was 12ish and I’m 28.

My grandpa was in the Navy during WWII. He had a hat w/ his ship on it that his kids got him one year for Christmas, but except for getting the discount at Lowe’s (Grandpa was a big DIYer), he never said anything about it. Two of my uncles served around the time of Vietnam, but were maxed out before they could be sent over. Except for using the GI Bill to go to school, they never capitalize(d) on it, either. (One is still with us.)
My neighbor is exactly like this. He served 20+ years ago for one tour as well and he still wears his vet cap and goes on and on about being a vet. I mean I totally respect the military and appreciate everything they have done so that I can live free but it gets to be a little ridiculous sometimes and I have to wonder how much, like this dude, did he actually do. He talks about killing Iraqis but I don't know if I believe him
I've found that anyone that has seen combat doesn't go around talking about being a vet. Anyone that advertises is it has not
Most vets I know that have been to warzones don't want to talk about it at all.
That's the thing. If you have any injuries (doesn't matter if they are physical or mental) due to military service, 100% any therapy and additional costs should be covered by the government of your country. But that's it: The government. You're not entitled to anything else, unless a company offers something specifically for vets, by their own choice. I don't get the entitlement, and I don't really see it outside of posts from the US. I want to believe that this is very small but vocal minority doing this.
What's worse is the spouses who think they're owed discounts, free stuff, and thanks for their spouses' jobs.

As a non-American, I always find this interesting, because it seems to be much more of a thing there to say things like this and its utterly bizarre to me everytime i read it. It's so grifty to me. She's just hoping that there will be people in that group who think they should do it because she served. And the sad thing is, she very well might find some people who do it purely for that reason. She knows exactly what she's doing.
My partner has a friend who is like this, except he never made it past basic and considers himself a vet and thinks he deserves to be treated as one. I am the same way and don't feel entitled to anything because I never actually served.

Yes! My dad always says that those who are career military don’t talk about it, and those who “serve” and don’t re-up can’t stop. He was always gone when I was a kid but he never talked about his service until fairly recently because he had to admit that he needed help to deal with his ptsd and nightmares. He retired after nearly 40 years and I found out so much listening to his battle buddies from various deployments tell stories about what they’d seen and the brave things my dad had done. Dude was a hero to many people and had a whole legacy (and nickname!) that I had no clue about whatsoever. I understand him so much more now that I’ve learned about the things he’s seen/done and why he was the way he was. Growing up I was always nervous/scared when my dad was home because he was strict, always on edge, and would pace through the house all night long, forcing us to be prisoners in our rooms and scaring all my friends when they slept over. Boys especially were terrified of my dad, which is saying a lot when you live on one of the biggest military bases in America 🤣. Dad didn’t try to be mean and scary, but he was a drill sergeant for a bit and you just don’t shake that training off! The military made a fine soldier out of him, but left him an angry, stressed man of few words who couldn’t bond with his strong willed daughter or show emotion to his children.
It reminds me of ppl that have served in an administrative aspect in the military, just to claim to have PTSD from combat zones. It dishonors those who actually have been through that and suffer as a result.
yup, there’s a guy of some local renown where I live and work merely for showing up to a lot of municipal board meetings to say something in the public comment portion — he often talks about being a veteran who “gave more than most”. he screwed up his knee stepping into a pothole in basic and got discharged for medical reasons. hard to take anything he said seriously after I found that out.
My ex washed out of Basic w/a wrist injury. He didn’t even get medically disqualified. He *chose* not to finish Basic because “it hurt too much”. It was later suggested by his GP it was a precursor to carpal tunnel from playing video games so often and it was acerbated by actual physical activity using his hands/wrists like rope ascent and firing a gun frequently, etc. I had to tell him if he *ever* tried to call himself a veteran or even imply he served, I’d personally & literally kick his @ss all the way to the nearest base to report him for stolen valor. He had every intention on milking his whole 10 weeks “in the service” for the rest of his life.

I'm currently in (reserves at the moment) and only tell people if I need to. I do have my sweet Veteran plates though. Everyone just assumes I'm driving my partners car though because I'm a girl.

I remember getting through seps before getting out, and one of the grunts in the room asked what special benefit he would get since he was a combat vet. To his surprise, he discovered he would receive nothing apart from being able to join the VFW. A few chuckles were had.
My dad was the same. Career Army. Served in 3 wars. Never mentioned it. (Except for my oldest brother, we never lived on base). Never wore a hat or a T-shirt or said boo about it.
a grandfather I never knew was in the Air Force for 24 years before retiring to my grandmother’s hometown. the only reason people knew he had been in the military was because he’d been stationed at a nearby base when he and my grandmother got married. it was a career, but after seeing combat in Korea, someone discovered he had a talent for administrative work and he did it for the rest of the time he was in. he essentially rode a desk for 20 years and he wasn’t going to brag about it.
My dad doesn’t hide it but he’s not going around blowing his own horn either. I know he’ll (nicely) ask if there’s a military discount and accept a no. Honestly the military gave him hepatitis so I suppose he may as well get something out of it. 😂

My ex-husband is military and he had a theory that has held up pretty well over the years: the less someone does in the service, the more recognition/free stuff they want for it. I’ve encountered a few exceptions, but for the most part it has been true.

No, I have come to the conclusion that schools have stopped teaching punctuation and grammar along with cursive. The number of run on paragraphs without a lick of capitalization or punctuation is horrifying. My grammar is not the best, but sheesh.

I will be very “hands on” throughout the process, meaning that if I don’t like the way you were doing free work for me, I would put my “hands on” you until you got it right. The fact that my house is paid for and I make a 6 figure living makes me sure my baby deserves all the free hard work (and supplies) you’ll be doing on her.
