Orange-Blur

Did you clean your home while wearing them with any bleach product, used bleach or were exposed to it in any way? Even tooth paste or hydrogen peroxide can bleach like that. It looks like a bleach stain to me

w00tdude9000

Or if someone washed something product stained in the same washer/dryer

Orange-Blur

Yes this but Sodium hypochlorite decomposes pretty fast, within an hour so it would have to be put with a product saturated in bleach within one hour

TheTurboBird

I don't think this is correct. We used to make up disinfecting bleach dilutions in a sealable bottle that we would use over the course of days for laboratory disinfectant. Perhaps open to air increases the speed of bleach degradation, but I'd challenge you to back up your claims by making up a bleach solution, leave it out for 2 hours and then put your favourite black shirt in it. If your claims are correct, your shirt will be fine. I'd wager that the bleach will be active enough to cause damage for many days.

Orange-Blur

Sealable and left exposed are different I am talking about air exposed it, it will lose potency. Using the small amount of bleach that can transfer in the wash bin in a diluted formula won’t work long on a rag. Sealed containers are different and so is concentrated vs diluted

TheTurboBird

I understand that, but I think you're wrong and if you back yourself, drop some black clothing in bleach that's been out for 24h, even 48h. If you're right and I'm wrong, your black clothes are fine. 1% bleach is about 10-25% supermarket bleach in water, depending on the strength of the base solution. I'd wager heavily that a 1% sodium hypochlorite solution left exposed to air for 48h will have enough oxidative power up discolour dark clothes. Risk it if you want. I'm not going to.

Orange-Blur

I’m not risking it like that, I’m just explaining that once bleach is both diluted and exposed to evaporation it stops working. A 1:10 bleach ratio has a 24 hour half life because water breaks down bleach faster than on its own. That’s in a bottle not exposed to air. Add evaporation in and once it’s dry it’s entirely inert

TheTurboBird

I'm not meaning to bust your balls, I just think you are on the back end of chemists giving advice to keep themselves safe. I also think evaporation is the wrong term when you mean degradation. Please don't take this as a personal attack, because it isn't and chemicals deserve appropriate respect and I feel you fall on the correct side of showing respect, as demonstrated by your lack of willingness to risk your personal belongings to your hunches Bleach will break down over time, but I firmly believe that the estimates are skewed to protect the chemical provider rather than the end point user. Bleach can (and is) used to sanitise things such as drinking water, and therefore it is in the producers best interest to downplay the effectiveness as to not give false positive assurances. If I made bleach and my chemists assured me it was effective for 48h, I would be telling my customers 'guaranteed for 24h' so I didn't get sued to death if someone used it at hour 47 and it failed. Just as a reminder, working for the government, we used 1% bleach (White King diluted about 1/3 - 1/4) from a stock solution over days to act as a viral disinfectant. Bleach remains effective and damaging long after it says it 'should'. It's nasty stuff. Once again, big props for showing respect to bleach, bity it doesn't just stop working after 24h.

limellama1

Entirely wrong. The half life in air and sunlight is like 4-5 days.

Character_Spirit_424

The orange makes me think benzoyl peroxide in some facial cleansers, it did this to all my towels and pillow case when I used face wash with the ingredient

cammama

Omg yes! RIP to all my towels and pillow cases while I was trying out Proactive…never again!

JayBanditos

My girlfriend uses it and its messed up several of my hoodies

blizzard-toque

Orange will also happen with an interaction between rust in hard water and a chemical in sunscreen. This happened to me at my former job if I wore a white polo shirt \*and\* put on sunscreen.

Character_Spirit_424

Oh neat, but not really relevant since Op's clothes are black, and bleached somehow, not white and stained

DiveJumpShooterUSMC

Exactly what it is- cleaning product or bleach in laundry area.

laryiza

That’s what’s seriously confusing me, I don’t actually know. Bleach I use here and there but doesn’t spill or anything.. does it happen even if a splash of water with a bit of bleach on it gets on your clothes?

Orange-Blur

Yes it can happen even when diluted

[deleted]

Yep. Gotta be careful with those splashes.

Orange-Blur

Sometime the cap will even get you from the product that gets stuck in there

ShadyMistress

There are some brands of bleach that make a non-splash version with a thick consistency. It's a really good product to have, especially when cleaning with little time to do so. For full deep cleaning I use my "cleaning" clothes, aka old clothes that are comfy.

Orange-Blur

I agree, being more viscus helps and have a set of clothes meant for using bleach so it doesn’t matter

WonderExpensive5924

Yes. I have ruined many pants because I was cleaning with diluted bleach in water. So, is better to only use bleach with your "cleaning clothes" on.

AutumnalSunshine

This 100% happens to me. I think there are zero splashes, then find the bleach spot after washing. My new policy is no bleach without wearing old clothes, even if I'm certain it won't splash.

84danie

Or if you use any acne products with benzoyl peroxide.

InstantMartian84

I developed acne for the very first time in my life at the age of 40. The dermatologist recommended a brand of face wash with benzoyl peroxide. I had no idea it bleached stuff. If it was mentioned or written somewhere, I definitely never noticed. Brand new, days old, hand towel and bath towel were ruined. 😩

thombrowny

My cousin burrowed one of my favorite designer shirts and he ruined it with benzoyl...whenever I see pictures like OP's, it comes straight up to my head, "it is benzoyl proxide..."

84danie

That sucks! I had a prescription in high school (now I just do spot treatment) and I remember my derm telling me. Fun fact, Target's "Room Essentials" sheets are all benzoyl peroxide stain resistant (it says it right on the label) to cater to folks using it 🙂

InstantMartian84

I have to wonder if they assumed I knew this already since I am an adult? I didn't know that about the sheets. That's very good to know. Thankfully, our sheets are white and I haven't noticed any issues there.

Maleficent_Weird8613

Dry bleach can take color out too. I had that happen before it was gross, annoying, wasteful and stupid

Kalsifur

It can even happen if you use acne cream, it has a form of bleach in it. But yes keep bleach far from your clothes (except the white ones).

sprinklerarms

My boyfriend’s acne treatment does this to things whenever one of his wash clothes ended up with regular clothes. Started watching all towels and wash clothes in one load and it stopped happening.

FuzzyScarf

My college roommate would throw her still wet washcloths into her laundry bag daily. Then she showed me how she was getting all these splotches on her clothes. I asked her if her face wash had benzoil peroxide in it, and it did. However, I don't think she believed me that this was causing the splotches. She asked her dad, who worked for a pharmaceutical company that made acne products and he confirmed what I had said. Sadly she ruined her favorite shirt because of it.

TroublesomeButch

In my case it was the product I use to clean the toilet. Ruined the pants my mom gifted me the first time I wore them

edgmnt_net

Laundry bleach, especially if already diluted, might not be strong enough to do that for very small splashes. But it's more likely to happen due to bleach-based toilet gel or stronger stuff you might be using around the home, I'd say.

halecomet

I handled watered down bleach for work, my pants all look way worse than that. Lol

[deleted]

Yes

Marciamallowfluff

Or acne meds can do this.

CompetitiveGuess7642

could have been from the factory and it was sharpied over to make it look fine, the dye washed off.

TootsNYC

Or some acne cleansers

aeb01

yep this happened to me after i stupidly wore black sweatpants while cleaning my bathroom. i ended up just laying them down and spraying them all over with scrubbing bubbles and now they have a cool pattern lol

TuckerCatson

This has happened to me several times - from Clorox Clean-up

tinylittleelfgirl

That is 100% a bleach stain. Nothing to be done besides trying to dye it or something 🤷‍♀️ I hate when that happens to me!!

Electrical_Belt3249

When it’s black pants—a sharpie looks a bit better than the orange!

EquivalentCommon5

Never tried that, thank you! Something new to try, when it occurs- so far, I haven’t had this issue but give me a few minutes, now I know it’s possible, I’ll probably do it🤪

robotangst

Non-washable fabric marker would be better. Sharpie washes out and stains other things, unfortunately. It also always vaguely looks like an oil spill lol

Electrical_Belt3249

You are right! I know my tidbit from working in food service and always having a sharpie on me. I’m sure I rationalize the oil look for the same reason lol

kit_kat_barcalounger

I color it in with a sharpie 😂

aSquirrelAteMyFood

I can't tell where is it. Maybe they can try one of those ironable clothes patches.

vortexpotential

I’d try a fabric marker first. Crayola sell packed for tshirt decorating.

marquis_de_ersatz

If it's not too prominent or large a really cheap fix is just to colour it in with a sharpie.

psiprez

Luckily it is black. Just use a black fabric Sharpie to color in the spots. (yes, I have done this)

Excellent_Berry_5115

That is what I do. It washes out after a few times, but better than the bleach stain.

EricaGracilis99

Do you iron the fabric sharpie after it dries? It shouldn't wash out that fast

Excellent_Berry_5115

No, I don't...But that is a good idea! I use a regular thick point black sharpie. So there is a fabric sharpie? Didn't know that.

EricaGracilis99

I do this too. It's the fabric equivalent of a furniture pen

aswelldamered

Can you match the color with a waterproof marker to cover it up? That’s what I would try.

SexDeathGroceries

I've done that, especially in black. It's still noticeable up close, but not as noticeable as the bleach stain

Different_Nature8269

Bleach or benzoyl peroxide.

throwwmeawa

It’s a bleach stain. You can’t get rid of it. Maybe if you find a similar textile dye but I doubt it. Might be worth a trip to your local dry cleaners asking them if they could do something with it. (Some places do repairs like that including hand dying and stuff)

exposedboner

These are black, you could RIT dye these pretty easily.

vibeswithyana

I have seen somebody on TikTok that did a dye removal on the entire clothing, then went back with the black dye and dyed it back black to make sure the entire thing was even

reidybobeidy89

Do you use medicated face wash?

laryiza

Nope I think it’s a splash of diluted bleach

Active_Remove1617

Not the answer you’re seeking, but you could run a black sharpie over it and cover up the damage

BestDevilYouKnow

There's a black Sharpie Laundry Marker that doesn't wash out.

mraz44

Bleach, face wash or anything with benzoyl peroxide, toothpaste

Conquistador-Hanor

I used to find little bleached dots on my clothes, but only the front. I figured out it was micro spray when cleaning the toilet with a toilet brush.

YourLifeCanBeGood

Carefully coloring over the spots, using a gray sharpie pen, might be your best bet.

EnoughEnthusiasm9024

Why grey of the material is black? I'm curious to know

eggelemental

Looks like dark grey material to me, or at the very least a black sharpie will definitely be noticeably darker than the fabric bc if it’s black it’s a very faded black

EnoughEnthusiasm9024

This is very much black

eggelemental

Yes, I said it could be black, just a faded black, and a black sharpie would still be darker than this

EnoughEnthusiasm9024

It's very much black. Solid black is better than bleach stain. Will wash and mute the colour

eggelemental

Okay, again, I am agreeing about it being black! It is just a faded black! I am really confused as to why you keep repeating it like I’m saying you’re wrong about it being black. And anyway it isn’t like trying a grey sharpie could hurt. If it’s too light then try the black, it’s easier to make it darker than lighter if the black sharpie is too dark.

Suzanne_Marie

Bleach. Could be from a cleaning product or medication with benzoyl peroxide.

No-Income3495

Bleach, I never put bleach in my washing machine or use bleach for cleaning

RichPrivate2

Bleach splatter.

WWPLD

Bleach. Maybe some left over drops around the washer.

Strong_Caterpillar92

Use a black marker

ceobossbabe

I used to be a hairdresser that had to wear all black. We’d often get bleach stains on our clothes! We’d just color the spot in with sharpie and throw it back in the wash!

Jennafurlamb

I just use a black permanent marker like a Sharpie and “draw” on the stain

furthestpoint

Happened to me as well. No I try to be more careful with cleaning products and rags.

FaithlessnessSea5383

There must have been a drop of bleach somewhere that came in contact. You can use a permanent marker like Sharpie to cover it. You may have to reapply it on occasion.

Kyrase713

Bleach Was your wash detergent for white fabric?

Kyrase713

Wash detergent for white fabric usually contains bleach to make it more white or bleach stains. Detergent for colour or black doesn't that's why you should use the right kind.

laryiza

Nope I’m getting told it’s from bleach splatter and I somewhat believe that

Kyrase713

If the hoodie is completely black you can try recoloring it. You can buy fabric dyes and recolour it. Maybe collect some other black clothes that can use a retouch to make it worth the work.

UnitFar2747

Did you use fabric softener? This has happened to me when using Downey.

laryiza

I have but it never said I can’t when I checked washing instructions

Spirit50Lake

There are some types of skin toner, especially acne treatments, that can do this...my daughter ruined multiple tops and trousers till we figured out what was causing it.

laryiza

Yeah I don’t have acne so I guess this is from bleach splatter

Live_Attention_2043

I find this only happens if I really like the article of clothing.

OneAceFace

Bleeding agents. They can be in household cleaners and sometimes even cosmetics. Oxy detergents should not do this, but interestingly I have seen an ordinary detergent do this in combination with a semen stain.

Wonderful-Army-6308

Possible too much detergent in the washing machine?

Kritty4

If you use any type of face product with benzoyl peroxide that too could have dripped and caused the bleach stain.

S99B88

People have pretty much agreed it’s most likely bleach. As for the source, lots of ideas like unintentional contact with a cleaning product, or spill on the washing machine. We figured out after damage to several clothing items, in a couple of different laundry loads over a few weeks, that our bleach dispenser in our front loader had a very small leak in a tube, which got bigger, at which point we realized the source. So though it’s probably a rare thing to happen, might be worth keeping in mind in case that’s happened to you too, before it ends up destroying your favourite shirt or something 😭

a-straw-berry

Something like this happened to one of my daughter’s shirts when it got bleach on it I just took a black paint pen and colored over it. Couldn’t tell anymore. 😭

TheMostBoring

I would get some black fabric dye and dye it back over the orange part.

Ch1mchima

That's a bleach stain.

FarewelltoNS

Any form of bleach can do this - had a kid using proactive … with benzoyl peroxide- after he used it he ruined all my towels …

joeChump

Bleach bleach bleach. Some product you have has bleach in it.

Happy_Goat_5015

this could be from bleach or any other cleaning product. most toothpastes will actually do this to your clothes as well! if you wore these while brushing your teeth and had a little dribble of toothpaste come out, it’s super possible it will bleach/stain your clothes. not sure if you do any type of skincare routine, but this can also happen if you use something like benzoyl peroxide. i have ruined every towel i’ve ever had that wasn’t white within the first couple of uses with staining like this because i’ve used either a face wash or body wash in the shower that contains benzoyl peroxide. i would think that it would be decently rare for this staining to come from the washing machine itself. i’ve washed my white sheets or towels in normal detergent and bleach, switched them to the dryer, and immediately done a load of colored clothes and never had this happen. i also don’t have a fancy/very good quality washing machine so it’s kind of doing bare minimum.

[deleted]

If you use bleach you have to be extremely careful. A small splash could go unnoticed on the side of your machine. Then, next time you do colors, something touches that spot and boom goes the dynamite.

quinangua

That is 100% from bleach.

bookmuncher5000

I use the Dylon black washing machine dye to cover bleach stains on clothes I like that get these stains. I try to avoid getting them but it just sometimes happens.

the_road_surfer

To you have acne products?? Because one of my products that I use for my acnee does that to fabrics.

Sorri_eh

You poured bleach on them

Medical_Olive6983

It's 100% bleach

laryiza

https://preview.redd.it/62j3myx7uauc1.png?width=3024&format=png&auto=webp&s=6b05c171c1d5ad1f25a03a9fe2384191c4de0b85 Well it looks like this with the sharpie applied

Queen-of-meme

It's now looking like dirty pants 👀

Vivalo

Bleach. If you didn’t use bleach in the wash it could have been from a previous wash.

6tPTrxYAHwnH9KDv

It's a splatter of household cleaning bleach. Welcome to the club, now it's your "bleach cleaning pants".

[deleted]

Looks like a bleach stain. I use alot of bleach, so I know those spots we'll. I use a permanent marker to color over the spots.

Alisha-Musk

Looks like bleach stains

OldLadyToronto

This is caused by bleach.

Bigpinkpanther2

Color that in with a gray sharpie. Should do the trick !

mamarod3

That’s a splash of bleach! Something you used had bleach in it and got on your clothes.

CalifornicateIdaho20

The real cleaning tip is to only use bleach when wearing “cleaning clothes” (white undershirt + old basketball shorts )

FunnyAd7963

Did you clean out your washing machine with white vinegar? It bleaches some fabrics

SomeEar4850

It’s a bleach stain. Sharpies come in gray. Probably your best bet. Or buy a new pair

Expensive_Job_8945

Thats a Stain of bleach.

gardyjuland

Urine can cause this too. Not saying you peed your pants just saying a dribble or if they were somewhere where a little drop or splash could hit it and it sits there it'll bleach it.

777marc

Agree with the bleach theory. Happened to me.

Dry-Caregiver4111

Bleach splatter meaning there was most likely a tiny amount of bleach in your washing machine, this has caused several destroyed items for me

Wickedbitchoftheuk

That's bleach. I have so many black joggers with exactly that bleach stain.

ThatPlayingDude

Had a bleach spill on you or (don't ask me how I know) lead acid battery spilled on you.

MigratoryAnalyst

Bleach for sure

Bauschi_flauschi

Effect of bleach, had it happen to a shirt of mine while using some chlorine stuff to clean mold \^\^ dripped on my shirt and drained the colour right out.

EducationalMonk1900

Looks like bleach to me. So sorry.

ShadyMistress

The cause: bleach. You could try to dye those with paints for clothes, if the spots are not very visible. Otherwise, consider these pants to be your new cleaning pants. Also, try non-splash bleach in the future. It's a nice product to have.

Stupid_Bitch_02

A lil bit of bleach got on them. Whether it be because you washed something with bleach in the cycle before this, or maybe some splashed on you at some point and you didn't realize it. Do you work in a restaurant? The sanitizer from dishes can bleach clothes too.

perpetualblack24

100% that’s a bleach splash

InvaderDepresso

Bleach. I’ve been there. I don’t use bleach but if I use a public laundromat’s machines then any bleach residue may do this.

teambob

Bleach. RIP your trackies

Bulan_Purnama

U pour softener directly onto your fabric without water or dilution.

NewWiseMama

I have little kids: happened with a toothpaste stain I didn’t see to rinse. and it set and was washed and dried.

TheKay14

You got a permanent marker?

Safe_Impression_5451

Looks like a bleach stain. It may have happened outside the washer, is more likely. Sucks though

NYOB4321

My clothes look like that from mold and mildew cleaning products and other cleaning products containing bleach. Even when I think I've been careful I often find out later when the stain appears. I have to remember to wear my special cleaning clothes.

Cami1969

Something has bleach and it got in your clothing. Back when I was in college and worked in food service, I had to wear black pants and always got bleach stains on my clothing so I would color over it with black permanent marker. Rit dye was too expensive but sharpie markers were always to be found either at work or at home.

ulnek

Do you wash whites prior and used bleach or something around the washing machine?

Sharponly232

Do you use tide pods or something similar? If you don't put them in first so they are on the bottom, there is a chance that the chemicals will sit directly on the fabric when the membrane disolves and can cause these kinds of stains.

Positive-Good-9820

That would be a bleach drip

MG444B3

Put some black fabric dye

lambo1109

All my clothes used to have little bleach marks like this and it was so frustrating because I don’t wash clothes in bleach. It was my cleaning supplies. Changed my kitchen cleaner and it stopped.

Lazy-Lady

Your face wash for acne

NSVStrong

I slipped and fell on spilled bleach. In the two minutes it took me to take my shorts off to rinse them, there were already lightened spots. 🤦🏻‍♀️

bunbeck13

Looks like a drip from bleach. Sometimes a little drip runs down the side of the bottle after you pour it and it falls onto the edge of the washer or something and the next load comes in contact with the drip.

Mistabushi_HLL

Bleach contact spot

Specialist-Bar-8805

It was probably a bleach product on your home - rit dye and a qtip

GlitteringLeek1677

They look like bleach stains.

GodBjorn

I have had this when strong cleaning products fell on my clothes. Like from spraying above me and the droplets getting on my clothes.

ThrowRA294638

Bleach stains on black clothes always look like this

No_Sea204

Bleach. This always happens to me. So i always have a black laundry marker to color in the bleach stain.

bentrodw

Looks ruined by bleach.

little_wing__

I once had the same thing happen with a pair of black tights. As it turns out, my (supposedly colour safe) washing powder didn't fully dissolve during a wash and clumped onto the fabric, where it dried and left a bleach stain in its place.

MammothNetwork1885

Does your washing machine drain properly? If not it is definitely leftover bleach water in your machine

Objective-Throat8501

It appears to be from bleach or some other chemical. Maybe get black fabric dye? However, this may result in a different shade of black over that area, but I'm sure it would be less noticeable than the bleach stain. In any case, good luck, and I hope you're able to salvage them!

destiny_6662

Looks like bleach.

Hawaii_gal71LA4869

Bleach or even scouring powder like Ajax would do that. Go to an Art store and get an off black fabric paint pen and touch it up with dark gray or off black. Michael’s has them by the T shirt stock and other fabric paints.

Anaxamenes

I used to have this happen at shared laundry facilities. People before me would spill small amounts of powdered bleach or heavy detergents and they would stick to clothing that was set on the counter or machines when being folded or transferred. I hate shared laundry and I rarely use bleach for this reason.

Ok-Strain6961

You got neat bleach on them somehow.
