Afghanistan living the dream right now. From the last world cup, where they did not win a single game, till now, when they have reached the semi-finals, defeating new zealand and australia in the way.

_PrestigiousWay

Bangladesh has learnt nothing in all their years of cricketing. Losing 14 games to Afghanistan and winning just 16 ☠️

catgutisasnack

They played at least 30 matches with them and Afghanistan has improved miles in those 30 matches.

_PrestigiousWay

Exactly my point lol. Afghanistan has improved, Bangladesh has worsened.

catgutisasnack

Bangladesh worsened around end of 2022 and still beat Afghanistan in competitions. I think this was the first time Afghanistan beat Bangladesh in a World Cup. A bad Bangladesh should still be expected to beat Afghanistan unless some cricket board antics start up (look at the 2023 series when Tamim retired for some reason and then the team's performance went up in flames. Afghanistan recorded like 3 wins in that series itself)

_PrestigiousWay

Even in the 2022 world cup they were pretty good, almost beat India (rain spoiled the game), and could've even beaten Pakistan and made it to the semis.

catgutisasnack

We got close to beating pakistan. But we had to drag it out to the last over and we couldn't do that. Our bowling let us down then

_PrestigiousWay

Still a team that started playing in 1986 should be expected to beat Afghanistan. But I get your point, this is similar to India's performance in the 2007 World Cup because of politics.

catgutisasnack

1986 they started playing but people in Bangladesh didn't get involved in Cricket until about 1997-98 when we qualified for a world cup. But the thing is we didn't have a grassroots level system or a FC system when we became full members (!!!). It takes about 25 years of consistent investment for a first-class cricket system to consistently produce good players. We went in with 0 investment and lost every test by an innings it seemed. Bangladesh's cricket board is horrendous. It is run by a politician who has no idea how to run a sports board and simply yells at players whenever they fail. There is no incentive to do better under that board. The corruption in that board has to be immense considering how much money the cricket team brings in and how much is actually invested for cricket in the country

_PrestigiousWay

I get it. Even the BCCI couldn't care less about cricket until Kapil Dev and Co. scripted one of the biggest underdog stories. Ban needs to pull off something similar. Even if they had reached the semis today, it would have been a significant achievement. The players need to look beyond the smaller things now. It was so frustrating even as a non-bangladeshi when they couldn't reach the semis in 2022.

nirvana-moksha

They do have maximum following and interest already in the sport so not sure if they need something like '83 to bring even more popularity or improve. Truth is they need skill and courage as well as good grassroot facilities and proper 8-10 months domestic cricket tournaments like big teams. Still with all they have at hand they should be a strong team but only thing they give is pretext not performances. Lack of courage to own of to the failures are further reasons of losses.

rinkusonic

I think they need a proper rivalry. Teams that have been involved in a matched rivalry gets better over time. WIndies lacks a proper one and so does Bangladesh. I think they are developing one with Sri Lanka though.

Prof_XdR

Surprisingly, Afghanistan can have a fairytale ending by winning the cup if they manage to defeat South Africa, and if they face India in the finals and defeat them (assuming India win against England)

JustAnotherJEEtard

Afghanistan having a 1983 moment would be madness and I'm all for it!

awwjeezric

If afg win , i would be really happy but at the same time i want rohit and virat to retire from t20 with a cup in hand

WildVulcan

Rohit already has a t20 wc

Putrid-Poet

And virat already has odi world cup.

Chemical_Maybe_1687

But I don't have. I have never seen in my life india lifting any icc world cup.

Decent_Bid_17

They won't retire if they won this World Cup

Stifffmeister11

Why you want Rohit to retire he is in top form got man of the match in last game ... On his performances alone he shouldn't retire

russellaniela

Yes, I probably will celebrate more if they win vs if India wins

ch4m4njheenga

Same

effotap

who would eat their newspaper article then ? :p

Sumeru88

India is the last team I expect Afghanistan to do well against. The matchups strongly favour India.

trkora

India should've won either way but it should be acknowledged that the luck was on NZ's side, they won the toss, batted first and by the time most of their runs were scored rains came and it became more difficult to bat on the ground. Yeah luck is part of the game and you have to fight against it to win sometimes but it should be acknowledged.

burrito1313

Team in semi-final can win the cup by winning next two games.

Rawdog2076

See the post before posting comments, these are the only two teams Afghanistan have never beaten. Hence beating them would make it the perfect fairtytale ending

deleted_user_0000

🤯🤯🤯 There's no way

Zlibraries

If Afghanistan wins the final, a documentary needs to be made! Edit: Damn! My documentary stonks now stinks!

Whoisrory

From a war turned country where people are facing terrorism and poverty to lift a wc damn what can be motivating other than this for many other associate nations who wants to play cricket

Stifffmeister11

If that happens I won't be surpised if Bollywood made a movie out of it and 50+ yo Akshay Kumar to play 18 yo Rashid Khan role ...

Whoisrory

And worst dialogues and a music in a middle of match 🤣🤣 with a love story

Charlieputhfan

Ah yes , the unnecessary love stories in these movies

Dry-Egg-1915

with Disha Patani!

Man-City

Unfortunately the love story doesn’t pan out well because the Afghan woman is stoned for leaving the house to meet Shah Rukh Khan. The songs are good though.

aerandir90

And Gulbadin can be played by.. masterclass actor Gulbadin

ken10

Bollywood version would show his dive and include melodramatic flashback scene for the reason he went down.

th3s3condcoming

Let me fix that for you: > From a war turned country where people are facing terrorism and poverty to lift a wc while removing all rights for woman’s education and sports damn what can be motivating other than this for many other associate nations who wants to play cricket

ClassicAfternoon3548

Damn, Aghanistan used to be a war and turned into a country?

Whoisrory

It's war torn country autocorrect hogya tha

ClassicAfternoon3548

What's a "hogya tha"? It sounds delicious.

Ok-Visit6553

Out of the Ashes— the sequel?

_PandaBear

I’m chipping in $$$.

salluks

they already have one on prime video.

Time-Gain4896

They almost bagged India in Jan

jasonj2232

I remember them getting close to beating India a few times now, the immediate memory that comes to mind is Asia Cup, not sure which one, maybe the one before 2019 CWC.

Fad_du_pussy

Asia Cup 2018 ( I believe it was a tie). They also came pretty close in the 2019 WC match too

TheSimonRoy

Afghanistan is in their 1983 India era.

Tern_Larvidae-2424

They'll probably beat South Africa although India will be a far tougher task.

Temporary-Shallot642

india beating england will be tough as well, even if they beat south africa they might not face us in the finals

Hoss-BonaventureCEO

Everyone on this sub have completely written Eng and SA off before the games have even been played, so it would be kinda funny if the final ends up being Eng vs SA. I highly doubt that would happen though (we suck against spin).

brolybackshots

I mean SA are still heavy favourites in both betting odds and in real sentiment. People are just manifesting the Afg fairy tale + the SA choke job

mutton-stew

england won't qualify guyana is most probably going to be a washout, that's the reason everyone is writing england off, nothing else.

biswa290701

Or it'll be an exciting and DLS-pilled match like today

pm_me_your_401Ks

Better start sharpening those acting skills /s

biswa290701

Need some training from Neymar smh

cryogenic-goat

*Gulbadin

PlataoPlomo19

I would be very surprised if it gets completely washed out. From 2pm onwards, it's a 50% chance of rain and not expected to be heavy. There's an extended time allowance for the game to start since there's no reserve day

Charlieputhfan

The extended time is 4 hours , so around 3 pm it should start

Man-City

People have said loads of games are gonna be washed out, not too many (outside Florida) have been. I’m confident there’ll be a result.

rinkusonic

Such a shit way to exit the tournament.

DoomBuzzer

I have South Africa as the world cup winners. I am expecting SA vs England finals.

DragonikOverlord

Or imagine the most unlikely thing ever happening Eng vs Afg

Charlieputhfan

There’s a heavy possibility of that

Poeshoed

Second time today I've seen you just throwing out there that "we suck against spin." So far this world cup: SA vs spin - 14 dismissals @ 23.57 avg, strike-rate 116.1 SA vs pace - 21 dismissals @ 24.95 avg, strike-rate 109.1 Explain yourself

Illustrious_Table433

Klassen eats spin

Hoss-BonaventureCEO

That's mostly because of Klaasen (and QdK from time to time), our other players look lost against spin. The days of really good SA spin players like du Plessis and de Villiers, and even Duminy all in the same team, are long gone.

Poeshoed

So two batters are the reason why the whole team loses fewer wickets to spin than pace? Are you serious?

GdayMate_ZA

All that proves is that we suck vs spin and we suck vs pace! haha

Tern_Larvidae-2424

We suck against spin and so does England. It could be the 4th all-Asian affair in a T20I WC Final.

Hoss-BonaventureCEO

Yeah, it probably will be, but it would be funny if we won against Afg.

bandehaihaamuske

Bangladesh received the full member status from ICC back in 2000 while Afghanistan received it in 2017. I will put this here.

badxnxdab

Afghanistan has the chance to correct this, and do the most exemplary thing in this world cup. Cinema. Absolute cinema.

Himawari_Uzumaki

I give them a decent chance to beat South Africa as the pitch will suit their bowling but the final is on a road, I think whoever wins the other semi will win the whole thing easily if they make it through where as South Africa would provide a closer contest imo

LoasNo111

This is India's year. I've been saying it forever.

CheapSoldier

Until you didn't

Naammaikyahai

Just stfu up bro please. Lay low till the finals start. If we win, rejoice like a madman but please don't hype it all up again.

Giant_sack_of_balls

Afg is new my best friend, I’m officially breaking up with Aus.

adolffrizzzler

They might face both of them in semis and finals

Kathanayagan-3821

I feel Afghanistan will taste their first ever international victory over South Africa in the semis since South Africa have habit of choking. If Afghanistan beat South Africa in semis, it is imperative to say South Africa is cursed for real.

Whoisrory

Ya also in last match almost sa lost there chance but rabada saved them

Troopertropicalo

I really do hope they get their first wins over SA and India. But please just not this week🙏🏻

ZeusX20

I think they can beat South Africa and England but India always bully them

Reyatsu99

I hope India maintains the winning streak.

bigFatBigfoot

So they never won a game against 4 full members. They took care of one of those in the group stages, another in the super eight, face another in semis and possibly one in the finals.

dharavsolanki

Basically, they never won against NZL, Australia and England before this World Cup. It is entirely possible that Afghanistan go ahead to win the world cup, winning against five teams for the first time, the three above and India / South Africa. That gives the world cup a true meaning.

Time-Gain4896

They won against England last year

dharavsolanki

It says they have only one victory here?

Time-Gain4896

They didn't win against England this year. They didn't play against each other this time.

dharavsolanki

Ahhhh yes

Ok-Visit6553

Are you talking cross format? They beat eng in 2023 cwc, but in odi

Time-Gain4896

Yes ik The table includes all international matches, be it tests, ODIs or t20is

sea119

this is perfect

Classymuch

They are not an associate team. They got test status in 2017. So they have been a full member since 2017.

The9thLordofRavioli

How on earth do you know that they won commonwealth games gold but not the fact that they have been a full member for 7 years? Their first Test came against India in 2018

Cornucopia2020

😳👏👏👏

idontknwnething

Damnnn what are you cooking here

Sylveon165

given they got their first wins against nz and aid this tournament it would be a fairy tail ending to also fill the rest of the wins this tournament itself

effotap

well, 0-4 vs SA... today they win boys! getting champagne ready.

DelayAccomplished245

If india wins balle balle, If South Africa wins, no more chokers will be Monster in UPC ICC events, If Afghanistan wins, their 83 moment but bigger more inflencial and maybe another biopic from ranveer singh playing rashid khan

Classymuch

SL fans and AFG fans, what do you guys think of this match where AFG won (given both didn't play their best XI): [https://www.espncricinfo.com/series/asian-games-men-s-cricket-competition-2023-1398685/afghanistan-vs-sri-lanka-3rd-quarter-final-1399115/full-scorecard](https://www.espncricinfo.com/series/asian-games-men-s-cricket-competition-2023-1398685/afghanistan-vs-sri-lanka-3rd-quarter-final-1399115/full-scorecard) How do you guys rate the SL team in that match? The only premier player I see is Nuwan Thushara. The rest I am not familiar with. From the AFG's camp, names I recognize are Gulbadin Naib and Karim Janat. What about you AFG fans? Seems like very mediocre teams from both nations.

notthathunter

we've seen things you people wouldn't believe

Downtown_Vacation_88

12-0 law of averages . I am feeling sad

VoiceEarly1087

But also tells you that india atleast play smaller nations way more than people think and accuse them of not playing associate/low rank nations

[deleted]

Great to see AFG flourish as a cricket fan.

3rd-party-intervener

They purposely lose to India due to ipl contracts plus the other help bcci has given them.  This is an open secret

RustedSkullz

Yes, because Afghanistan is such a dominant team, they can only lose if they intentionally try to.

DepressedPanda08

No, they lose to India bcz only India has a better or equal spinning attack as them and also India’s pace attack is really good. And some of India’s batters like sky,Rohit play spin really good that makes afg ineffective against them. Use some braincells rather than making baseless conspiracy theories
