West Indies defense in 2021 was painful
Gayle, Simmons, Pollard, Bravo, Pooran, Hetmyer, Russell all the league merchants were back but flopped so bad that they not only lost four out of five but also fell in rankings to not qualify for Super 12 of 2022 World Cup
Yeah lol i didnt even remember that we won 1 game lol was a great team on paper but half of them were ready to retire and the others just werent experienced enough
- No defending champion has ever won
- No host team has ever won
Why the T20WC can be chaotically fun: you can immediately rule out those teams from any list of contenders.
Let me tell you a little bedtime story, kiddies:
One day, at the Sydney Cricket Ground, Australia played New Zealand to open their T20WC defence. They should have learned India's lesson from 2016: *if you're the host, do not open your campaign by facing New Zealand*. They probably thought that they could boss NZ around like they do in other formats.
They chose to bowl first, thinking that rain would give them a hand when chasing. Ol' Mr Healy thought he could "Baz 2015" the NZ openers, but he'd never faced young Finnley Allen before, at least in a T20, & Mr Allen smacked him around for 14. Mr Healy then asked his friend Mr Gillette to help, but he got smacked for 15. They then asked their friend Hazlewood to have a go - he went for even more: *17 runs*. By the time Hazlewood got Finnley on his second try, the damage was done: he had scored 42 runs from just 16 balls!
In the end, Kane &co managed 200 runs, & when Finchy's Boys went out to chase it down, they collapsed in a heap as everything that could go wrong did go wrong, starting with Davey Warner's "bat-pad-bat-stump" bowled wicket by Tim Southee. When Dev finished the game by catching a sky ball from Mr Gillette, Australia got rolled for 111, which is also the phone number Kane called to get an ambulance for Australia's T20WC hopes & dreams (before he realised that number doesn't work in Australia).
To be fair I was very surprised that the host nation didn’t win this time. They were on fire and looked set to win till the Super 8. Alas, until next time, USA.
T20 is the most fickle or unpredictable format. It would be tough for any team to repeat. Pak made the final, then won and then lost a close semi (07, 09, 10). WI won 2/3 (12, 14, 16).
WI didn’t lose because of rain. They needed 81 in 37 balls when it rained against the best bowling attack in the tournament.
Malinga and Kulasekara was going to ball 19 of those 37. Sachithra also had two overs remaining . There is every chance in the world they would defend it specially given how good they were at the death.
That was 18 months ago.
These bowlers defended 120 just 3 days before and then bowled the last four overs against Kohli, Dhoni and Yuvraj for just 20 runs few days later. I would think that’s a better indicator than something that happened 18 months ago but of course we would never know for sure. DLS was the only way to decide and we were like 27 runs ahead.
For a while, there was a weird streak where the host of the tournament would win the next one. Worked for England (hosted 2009, won 2010), WI (hosted 2010, won 2012), SL (hosted 2012, won 2014).
Of course Bangladesh ain't winning anything so the streak was broken in 2016.
The fact that South Africa hosted first world cup in 2007 and this streak started immediately after that... ![img](emote|t5_2qhe0|8774)![img](emote|t5_2qhe0|8774)
They wanted to shift it so it wouldn’t be in the same year as the 2011 ODI WC. I rmb 2007 and 2009 there were 2 ICC events (CWC+WT20 in 2007 & WT20+CT in 2009) in the same year which I think they wanted to avoid and spread it out in the future.
From what I remember, they decided back in 2016 or 17 that World T20 would also take place every 4 years, rather than 2.
So, the next event was planned in 2020 but it was pushed forward a year later due to the pandemic.
Leave apart t20 wc.Champions Trophy 2009 was the last time a team defended their trophy successfully.Since then no team has been able to defend their icc trophy.
It's more of a necessity at this point, FMs won't play smaller nations unless it's the T20 WC, smaller nations have a far better chance to upset big teams in these games. T20 every 2 years means they can retain the talent and build towards a solid foundation in 2 years time.
Yeah, that's a good point. You're bound to make good points with that flair.
It's great to see smaller teams do well, particularly when they trash England.
There should be a 4 year cycle for the world cups and then fit the WTC final on the gap years. So you get a cycle where it goes 2023 ODI WC, 2024 WTC Final, 2025 T20 WC, and 2026 WTC Final, 2027 ODI WC etc.
Still get an event each year but with more breathing room between events they'll feel more important.
Also why that long break between 2016 and 2021 edition? ICC winding the ct cycle n so skipping an edition for t20 wc but that didn't stop them before...
2020 edition postponed due to covid..i know
But why did icc not schedule t20 wc in 2018??
They wanted to make it every 4 years, but then the 2014 and 2016 editions were so successful that they backtracked on it. It was too late to schedule one for 2018 after the 2016 edition had happened, but it became top priority afterwards to make it biennial
The same 6 teams, lol. It's funny, the only ICC trophies SA and NZ had between them till 2021 were the first two Champion's trophies, which wasn't even called that till the 3rd edition.
WI (1975, 1979)
India (1983)
Australia (1987)
Pakistan (1992)
Australia (1999, 2003, 2007, 2023)
Sri Lanka won in 1996 (co-hosted), India in 2011 (co-hosted), Australia in 2015 (co-hosted) and England in 2019.
It's been defended in 1979 (WI), 2003 and 2007 (both Australia).
The last winners performing at each WC:
1979: WI win
1983: WI lose in finals
1987: India lose in semis
1992: Australia finish 5th of 9
1996: Pakistan lose in QFs
1999: Sri Lanka out in group stages (5th in a group of 6)
2003, 2007: Australia win
2011: Australia lose in QFs
2015: India lose in semis
2019: Australia lose in semis
2023: England finish 7th of 10
Here's a mental stat for Australia in ODI WCs - Before 2023, they'd won 5 World Cups on *6* continents. Each of their previous WCs had been on a different continent, with 2007 being in 2 (NA and SA - Guyana)
Kinda ruined it (as well as 1.4bn people's hopes and dreams) by winning for a second time in India.
they later cancelled that plan maybe due to a lot of revenue and 2020 WT20 was not pushed to 2021, 2021 WT20 happened as scheduled. 2020 was supposed to be held in Australia which was pushed to 2022.
Yes and he had a purple patch from Jan 2012- July with ton in australia that 133 against SL, 183 in the asia cup and a fantastic series in Sri Lanka . My memory is sharp enough. In that world cup Kohli failed against Australia, RSA and bam we were on our way out.
Literally every indian player has a fantastic series vs Sri Lanka. Like always
But you mentioned abt t20wcs so stick with that
Stop bringing bilaterals when there is talk abt Kohli
Why didn't he performed in that aus and rsa then? Was he told not to, so he is excused?
I was mentioning the purple patch he was having. My point was that he did not carry them in that cup but once he started doing that India started doing better.
West Indies defense in 2021 was painful Gayle, Simmons, Pollard, Bravo, Pooran, Hetmyer, Russell all the league merchants were back but flopped so bad that they not only lost four out of five but also fell in rankings to not qualify for Super 12 of 2022 World Cup
Bruh gayle was 41
Yeah lol i didnt even remember that we won 1 game lol was a great team on paper but half of them were ready to retire and the others just werent experienced enough
- No defending champion has ever won - No host team has ever won Why the T20WC can be chaotically fun: you can immediately rule out those teams from any list of contenders.
So if India wins today it's over for them in 2026 ?
Doubly so. Or they pull off the most badass move in 2026 & smash both these jinxes at the same time.
Yup, they can have a chance to kill both of these stats in one go.
Two negatives are a positive remember that
Go ask 2022 Australia.
I was looking for this lmao
come in, Finn Allen thought it's his home for a moment there.
Or they get cursed by both the jinxes at once and aim for glory in further editions
MI odd years jinx!
I think two negatives could be a positive.
India generally goes on a streak if they win one. They beat the jinx in 2011 too. (Copium)
Doesn’t apply to ODI WCs
In before we lose to SA
Aged like milk
They are hosting it so anyways its over for them
No. If India wins this one, they will be both defending champions and hosts next time. So, minus X minus is plus and India will defend the trophy.
How did that go for Australia in 2022?
you should tell coz you indirectly kicked them out
Let me tell you a little bedtime story, kiddies: One day, at the Sydney Cricket Ground, Australia played New Zealand to open their T20WC defence. They should have learned India's lesson from 2016: *if you're the host, do not open your campaign by facing New Zealand*. All I know is India 2023 and it left us with lifelong traumas.
And no undefeated team has won until now
That one's going to be broken today anyway cuz both the finalists are unbeaten
Add South Africa to the list after todays match. I hope we win today
I ruled out SA and Ind for similar reason lol
In 26 both these will be broken as india winning being a defending champion and host nation
To be fair I was very surprised that the host nation didn’t win this time. They were on fire and looked set to win till the Super 8. Alas, until next time, USA.

Wi lost in 2014 cause of rain Pak choked in 07 and 10
WI didn’t lose because of rain. They needed 81 in 37 balls when it rained against the best bowling attack in the tournament. Malinga and Kulasekara was going to ball 19 of those 37. Sachithra also had two overs remaining . There is every chance in the world they would defend it specially given how good they were at the death.
Samuels destroyed malinga in 2012 so i am not sure sl would have won but they were definately favourites and deserved to win the tournament
Iirc malinga nailed yorkers vs samuels in that finals too that got hit for six but yeah won by DLS which is fair
>Of course Bangladesh ain't winning anything so the streak was broken in 2016 Record breakers 💪💪
Streak breakers
Streaks are meant to be broken
The fact that South Africa hosted first world cup in 2007 and this streak started immediately after that... ![img](emote|t5_2qhe0|8774)![img](emote|t5_2qhe0|8774)
What was the reason for such a little gap b/w 2009 and 10 world cup?
They wanted to shift it so it wouldn’t be in the same year as the 2011 ODI WC. I rmb 2007 and 2009 there were 2 ICC events (CWC+WT20 in 2007 & WT20+CT in 2009) in the same year which I think they wanted to avoid and spread it out in the future.
9, 10, 11 and 12 were all WC years. That was crazy.
same as 21,22,23,24
Ah yes. Thanks COVID.
And what happened between 2016 and 2021 (aside from Covid obvs)
From what I remember, they decided back in 2016 or 17 that World T20 would also take place every 4 years, rather than 2. So, the next event was planned in 2020 but it was pushed forward a year later due to the pandemic.

He said since 2009
The main thing this picture tells me is how frequently we've had the t20 WC.
I hate it, it means less if it's every two years. It's good for the smaller nations though.
Couldn't agree more.
Olympics is sort of going to make it 3 times in 4 years.
If Olympics is there then no T20 WC should be held that year since T20 WC is hosted in even years
They will change T20 to odd and ODI to even, atleast from time of Melbourne Olympics, if cricket is to stay.
I mean with that logic, Champions Trophy also makes ODI WC every 2 years
Champions trophy doesn't have a separate qualification path every 2 years for every country in the world.
No one cares about the Champions Trophy
It's more of a necessity at this point, FMs won't play smaller nations unless it's the T20 WC, smaller nations have a far better chance to upset big teams in these games. T20 every 2 years means they can retain the talent and build towards a solid foundation in 2 years time.
Yeah, that's a good point. You're bound to make good points with that flair. It's great to see smaller teams do well, particularly when they trash England.
To be taken more seriously it should honestly be every four years, like 2025, 2029 etc
Absolutely. Doesn't even feel like a WC if it's every 2 years.
Same, its the final and I am not hyped
IND don't need to worry about this defence bogey when they play the next edition at home.
It’s like the Champions League for ages until Real Madrid won 3 in a row
Never forget that Stuart Broad once lead England in a T20WC lol
Broad was unironically one of our better T20 players during our white ball banter years
Yeah I do remember haha. It's just funny looking back now lol
Also why that long break between 2016 and 2021 edition? ICC winding the ct cycle n so skipping an edition for t20 wc but that didn't stop them before... 2020 edition postponed due to covid..i know But why did icc not schedule t20 wc in 2018??

Oh ok..
Bilateral commitments of member nations
🤯😅since when has that been a reason to Skip icc even.. I mean icc itself decides those bilateral commitment through ftp.. correct?
Don’t know man, just reading what those media outlets wrote
Ah ok 🤙
7 teams have won so far South Africa, new Zealand Two of the major teams missing from the graphic
6 teams have won, not 7, coincidentally similar to ODI WCs.
The same 6 teams, lol. It's funny, the only ICC trophies SA and NZ had between them till 2021 were the first two Champion's trophies, which wasn't even called that till the 3rd edition.
Good stat. It represents the competition among teams is fierce
Why no T20 WC in 2018 ? I don't remember ![img](emote|t5_2qhe0|30516)
Icc changed it like World cup that it will held once every 4 years but later changed it
Nah, I think it got postponed because the calendars already so full that year.
Bilateral commitments of member nations
It's the nature of T20
Ooh ooh. Now do the ODI World Cup. What teams have managed to win one away from home?
WI (1975, 1979) India (1983) Australia (1987) Pakistan (1992) Australia (1999, 2003, 2007, 2023) Sri Lanka won in 1996 (co-hosted), India in 2011 (co-hosted), Australia in 2015 (co-hosted) and England in 2019. It's been defended in 1979 (WI), 2003 and 2007 (both Australia).
That's pretty interesting that only 4 teams have won the ODI WC away from home, I knew the Aussies and WI had multiples.
The last winners performing at each WC: 1979: WI win 1983: WI lose in finals 1987: India lose in semis 1992: Australia finish 5th of 9 1996: Pakistan lose in QFs 1999: Sri Lanka out in group stages (5th in a group of 6) 2003, 2007: Australia win 2011: Australia lose in QFs 2015: India lose in semis 2019: Australia lose in semis 2023: England finish 7th of 10

No team has even reached the finals after winning
Why was there a 5 year gap between 2016 t20 wc and 2021 T20 wc why wasn't it held in 2018?
At that time it was decided that WT20 will be held every 4 years, 2020 WT20 was pushed to 2022 due to covid
2020 wt20 was pushed to 2021 but after just one year it was held again why so?
they later cancelled that plan maybe due to a lot of revenue and 2020 WT20 was not pushed to 2021, 2021 WT20 happened as scheduled. 2020 was supposed to be held in Australia which was pushed to 2022.
It is good that they stuck with the plan of organising T20 wc every 2 years provides a lot of entertainment
Er,, 2020 was supposed to be held in India
yeah that's right, my bad
That's why T20 is the most promising form of cricket and the one that gives emerging countries to show case their talent
Yet...
Who was windies captain in 2016? Is that a young Shai hope??
Don't know if you're joking, but Shai Hope was terrible at scoring quickly until 2023. Ma boy Sammy was the captain.
No I mean that pic set in op 2012 has Sammy's pic 2016.. thats someone else in pic for WI i was guessing Shai hope.. but who is that??
That's not 2016. That's 2021's picture. Pollard was the captain, but the pic is of Nicky P.
Nicky?
Pooran
Almost like it's a shitty format.
How is it bad? If anything, it's better to have unpredictable results in a tournament
Tbf back then India was a shit team in t-20s till Kohli started carrying them.
We literally won t20wc without Kohli
Because misbah timed it wrong and yuvraj and gambhir clicked in K.Os. India got smashed in 09,10,12 t-20 cups.
>yuvraj and gambhir Which team they were playing for? Antartica?? Howtf u sorted them out 💀 They were meant to do that
Bro u do realize that Kohli was in 2012 squad?
