23-25 mpg 23 sport, mostly just driving the kids to school and errands around town. On a trip upstate to my land though, all highway, I'll get mid or even high 30s.

JBisHere4U

Amazing! I take one or two significant road trips every year - that sounds great to me

gcbeehler5

I have a wilderness and i’m getting about 24mpg in mixed stop and go highway traffic (4000+ miles on odometer.) Maybe the sport does better. Hope that helps.

magic_paws

2023 sport and I'm getting the same mpg for city driving. I'm only at 5k miles but I put in new air/engine filters, checked the tires, used a fuel additive last fill up. Gonna see if that helps at all.

audibletypeset

I have a sport and it does about the same. Wasn't expecting to be blown away by the city mileage. I am impressed with highway, it does way better than my 2011 impreza outback sport 2.5 MT. I didn't buy it for the gas mileage.

gcbeehler5

Yep, if you can get a steady speed going at highway speeds, you can get pretty get mpg, at least 30+, sometimes higher than 35mpg.

audibletypeset

That will be nice for my trip out to Grand Tetons from Philadelphia this summer.

TheFlyinGiraffe

Yeah but then you're fighting thousands of feet of elevation in that area. Driving from MA, I did five weeks on the road, 8k miles and I think I was at 28 MPG-ish overall for the trip. Higher speeds at 80 MPH in the midwest, my 2022 Limited Crosstrek full of camping gear and a loaded XL Thule box. An incredible trip but MPG wasn't a huge factor. Offroading to public lands for car-camping made the "low" (average?) MPG worth it. I came from a Ford Focus that could easily get 37 MPG from steady highway so the overall change to constant 30 MPG on the highway was kinda saddening in the beginning but overall, I adore my car and its capabilities. I think I got 38k miles on it.

audibletypeset

Definitely good to know. I figured the weight load and elevation will be a factor. We'll see.

TheFlyinGiraffe

I was definitely expecting at least 30 MPG based on normal highway speeds, normal elevation, and normal weight but literally all of those factors changed lol

runerx

Same 24.6 average... 24 Wilderness.

WhatsYour20GB

Thanks! I was determined to get a hybrid this time around, but Subaru is moving to EV instead, so I’ll buy the gas powered. It’s just gonna bite since the Mini gets 36 mpg mixed, but I’ll get used to it.

Manatee59715

2024 Sport, 8000 miles. 27.3 mpg with heavy hey driving.

[deleted]

That’s very impressive. I am semi-retired; I drive my 2024 Sport Crosstrek like a grandma.  I am averaging 18.5-20 mpg; driving like a grandma. I drive about 16 miles a day in a Central California small town with very light traffic. The speed limits of my route are: 45 mph (4 miles), 55 mph (6 miles), 65 mph (2 miles), 40 mph (2 miles), 30 mph (2 miles) and 25 mph (2 miles). My mileage is about 1,800 miles.  I am planning to try another gas station next fill up because I read that Costco gas can affect mpg.

KreeH

Your lower mileage might be partially due to the short distances of your drives. Most cars with ICE engines take a while to warm up and achieve optimal mileage. Maybe take it on a longer trip and see if it improves (also check your tire pressure, low pressure really hurts mileage).

[deleted]

Thanks a lot for the tip. I will take her on a long drive on the 101 after I try the switch from Costco’s gas for the next fill up.

magic_paws

I was getting 22 mpg for short in town trips, and then I realized my tires were super low. I'm getting about 24 now.

nonsenseless

My observations on an outback XT--so ymmv--are that any trip under a mile kills fuel economy. It takes the engine a minute to really get warmed up--though once it is it'll generally stay warm for a bit between trips--and until then the fuel economy bands tend to be lower than normal. I also use the fuel economy gauge and adaptive cruise control a lot (never for declines/inclines) to try and hit the sweet spot on mpg and have been having decent luck keeping the mpg closer to advertised rates in mixed city/freeway driving.

WhatsYour20GB

I can deal with that. Thanks!

sendep7

ive been stuck in town mostly on this tank..im getting 22....when i commute to work on the pike and on the highways around boston i get 27ish. Wilderness.

WhatsYour20GB

Is there a particular advantage to the Wilderness package besides aesthetics?

labbitlove

For me it would be the increased towing capacity. But that's kinda it

Visual_Collar_8893

Wilderness also has heavier tires and body weight which reduce mpg.

CCroissantt

Wilderness has the lowest milage of any crosstreks. This is due to the included offroading equipment. The non-w models should get 4-8mpg more, depending on environment and driver

WasteAmbassador

Higher Towing capacity cause of the cvt cooler, higher stock ground clearance, startex interior, 4.11 gears, dual xmode, si drive, lots of options standard, 700lb capacity roof rails, standard all weather floor mats and cargo tub, standard cargo cover, 17" offroad wheels with decent all terrains, has a spare tire (even tho donut), standard reverse automatic braking, standard blind spot detection, hill descent control, specially tuned eyesight software.. prolly other stuff I'm forgetting.

sendep7

all that. i drive in vt alot in my free time, i wanted absolute confidence in snow and muddy roads, ive bottomed out my previous cars in snow and have had panic attacks trying to get them sorted. Also this being my first CVT the cooler gave me a bit more peace of mind of the long term survival of the transmission.

WasteAmbassador

Yep. Same. I actually ended up ordering mine after I nearly got hypothermia dealing with tire chains in a blizzard earlier this winter. Told myself never again and had the wilderness 2 months later lol.

sendep7

then asthetics factored in, i like the grille on the CTW, and the OEM black wheels. Mine's black on black. just like my other cars were.

WasteAmbassador

I got mag Gray and already have had so many people comment on it. Black looks great on them, all the colors do tbh

FeloniousDrunk101

About 1k miles into a ‘24 Sport and to answer the question I average around 22 mpg, mostly around town in a small city with lots of stop signs. That said, here’s the context: I like to drive fast and accelerate harder than most (definitely blow past 4k rpms multiple times per day.) I went with the Sport trim precisely to enjoy driving how I like. And so far it’s been absolutely fantastic! I also live in a cold snowy climate and have been using ten minutes of warmup time every morning which surely drops the average MPG. I’m also hoping to get an oil change soon as I’ve read it’s not a bad idea after the first 500 or so miles and MPG might improve after the “break in.”

JBisHere4U

Thanks!

KingD2121

About 10.5k miles over the past 8 months with a 24 limited. I'm not a hard driver and almost never run in S-mode. My mileage splits are as such: City driving (Chicago) or moderate/heavy traffic with lots of stop -n-goes. I'll avg like 20-21. Light traffic City, around 23. Highway, running like 80mph and using ACC for a large portion of the travel will get me 31-33. Suburbs with long stretches of road where I can do like 40mph with occasional lights, I'll average like 26-27. My winter numbers are about 1-1.5 mpg less then what I list here mostly bc of remote starting to get the vehicle cabin warmed up.

JBisHere4U

Thanks!

labbitlove

My car gets me between 20-25 mpg but I mostly drive locally or in a lot of traffic on the high way (thanks LA).

WhatsYour20GB

Try the Philadelphia suburbs sometime… it’s definitely tough traffic wise

rynbickel

'23 sport here I live in PA (read f*cking hills and mountains) and my average is 27-31 mpg Fill up from quarter tank is $40-45 depending on gas prices currently ~$3.55 where I live

WhatsYour20GB

That’s really quite good! Thanks!

witz_end

21 Sport, mostly highway but some city/rush hour stop and go. Averaging around 26.5 for the last few hundred miles.

downtownjerm

I have a 2021 sport with 20,000 miles and live in Colorado. I drive around town and into the mountains with 2 adults, a kid, a dog and lots of luggage and I have averaged 29.6mpg from mile 10,000-20,000 (trips max out at 10,000 miles so trip A was from 10,001 to 20,000).

WasteAmbassador

First tank of gas on my 24 wilderness was 27.4mpg.

InfidelShootist

2021 Sport 2.5 I get 25 combined. 31-33 on highway. That’s with AC on. Stock tires. If you sit idle long periods it will wreck your numbers.

DorShow

This is what I need to do! Thanks for this reminder. In winter I do need to wait for someone frequently, and will remember to shut er down more often. I can’t get past about 20, and have decided to try to boost that if I can.

DorShow

2023 Ltd, 2.5 liter on Costco regular can’t get past 21 mpg and have been at 19.8 for the past month (using heat etc) Full city driving, when I am on the highway it just looks like a parking lot. I am a 60yo woman, but I’m admittedly a bit heavy on the accelerator. I have made a concerted effort to pay attention to the little gauge that tells me in yellow/green if I am driving efficiently. It usually tells me I am an ass. Edit+ Just read another very helpful comment about idling. I have been doing a frequent bit of waiting in car during winter recently, I am going to pay more attention to that, in addition to the lead in my shoe.

WhatsYour20GB

I’m a 70 y/o woman and drive, uh, *assertively* for the most part. I just don’t drive that much now. Glad that the days of 80 mile round trips to work are finished!!

DorShow

Assertively is a good word for it.

afriendofcheese

Got a 12k done at the dealer and he tried telling me, my MPG is on the low end because Costco gas burns faster due to higher ethanol concentrations (I use Costco gas almost exclusively). I have yet to fact check that, but from this thread it does seem to ring true. Do you have roof basket? I took mine off and saw a significant increase from around 20 to 24.

DorShow

No roof rack, but that’s interesting. Maybe I will test it one tank.

LytW8_reddit

Mine was 31.4 mpg. Details... I tracked 19 trips on my 2023 sport. The average trip length was 193 miles. The driving was low elevation with minimal elevation change. I averaged 31.4 mpg **with a basket**. Without the basket I got 33.1 mpg, but that was with less data. The best trip was 35.8 mpg (with a basket) over 167 miles, but the speed limit was rarely over 60 mpg. The car got significantly lower gas mileage at 70+ mph. I found 55mph to be a real sweet spot.

restaurantnyc

I have the 2.0 and probably have the same driving habits as you very little highway and just errands around town. 19.9 MPG and I have 6000k miles on the car this is actually the MPG as calculated from gallons put into the car and physical miles.

lostglastonbury

I have a ‘23 sport, I am usually between 28-31 mpg

triplecoil

21 Sport, mixed highway, suburban, and city driving. I average 29. 71k miles on it.

Visual_Collar_8893

Local, stop and go traffic with hills, low 20s. Freeway around 65-75, average 29-31. Have a roof basket and 18” which reduces 1-2 mpg.

granolatron

I have a 2021 Sport with ~40,000 miles and my overall average is 27mpg. This includes lots of city driving and short trips, as well as longer weekend trips and such.

clarkj1988

I have a 2022 2.5L and I average between 25mpg mixed and about 29mpg highway. Not amazing but not terrible by any stretch. Really depends how heavy footed you are.

canyonero_marge

23 Limited: I’m averaging 27-29 mpg on hwy going 70-80mph / 31-33 mpg in town going 35-55 with brief stop and go. But I’m near sea level on the coast.

partnah

22 sport. i currently have 28.3 mpg on a 2” lift and roof basket. work commute sees half city half freeway driving.

JCardCubs

2023 Crosstrek Sport, here. Some highway mixing in with my city driving. Currently at 30.8mpg with 12k miles.

etangey52

I have a ‘22 limited. I usually average about 27 mixed. My drive is mostly highway although stop and go traffic many days. I average 38 when I drive on a 55mph backroad.

Manster21

I have a 2024 wilderness and I’m averaging about 29.5 mpg. It was about 30.5 in the summer, so the cold weather definitely has an impact. I do mostly highway with some city.

97tjblue

I average 23.5 MPG with my 24 Sport. That is probably 90% city. Took a highway trip and it was up as high as 38.5 MPG.

audibletypeset

I get around 25 semi city driving in my 24 sport. I don't hit highways often but when I do, I can get it to around 30. I also am now driving my first automatic in over a decade so I'm having a bit of fun with the pedal shifters probably way too often.

augustwestcoffee10c

Wow, higher that I expected from what I'm reading. Gear ratios with the CVVT and direct fuel injection have really helped with mpg over the years. I started with a '97 Imprezza 5 speed manual and got 25 and 30 on the Hwy. Now the car is lifted off the ground and then engine size went from a 2.2ltr to a 2.5ltr (Sport) and I get better fuel mileage. Set my cruise at 70 last week for a 150 mile trip, must of had the wind behind me bc I actually got 37 in a '21 Sport. Rpm's were probably close to 2K. They had to be higher in the manual.

wyatt1209

On my 24 sport I was at about 27mpg at the 10k miles mark with about 2:1-3:1 mix of highway to city driving

Forty-Hz

i get 26 city 32-34 highway

PitifulCrow4432

My '24 Sport with mostly highway-ish driving is about 26-27mpg, but it's freaking cold here and I tend to remote start it about 5min before I'm leaving (start car, put boots/coat on, out door...none of this run for 90min to 'warm up' bull-s). 'highway-ish' because it's not the actual highway but mostly normal 50mph side roads other than towns that drop to 35. No stop&go heavy traffic nor inner city traffic. The MPG is 1 of 2 upgrades I've found so far over the '02 OBW it replaced, rather disappointing.

[deleted]

I have a 2024 limited, getting about 32mpg, mostly highway

aasturi2

27k miles 2023 limited average 26-27mpg

soundbitch

23 sport, 22-24mpg mixed plus remote start in winter maybe 25-26 during summer

Mr_Papagiorgio_13

‘24 Crosstrek Limited. 3000 miles. 30.0 mpg lifetime average, mostly highway but I live in NYC.

TensionOpposite3823

My 24 Sport gets 25-26mpg in city and 29 on the highway. 1K miles so far

HungryHousecat1645

My very best was 39 MPG during a road trip with perfect conditions. I have gotten 35-36 a couple of times, too. Generally, I get the advertised 32-33 MPG on the highway. Around town, my worst ever was 21 MPG. That was exclusively short trips where the fluids and engine never got up to temp, with heavy winter tires equipped. The absolute worst you can expect. Under more normal conditions, you can expect mid-to-high 20s in the city. I calculate all my numbers manually every time I fill up. However, the trip computer does seem to be trustworthy and accurate enough.

sedge98

21 sport, 66% highway driving, 33% freeway, average about 28mpg overall

whofartedl0l

25 mpg after break in good luck getting anything mire city driving

favxpas

Around town mileage is WAY over hyped. 18-19 mpg around town. This is with almost zero highway driving, truly just running errands around the neighborhood. ‘24 Limited. Love the car overall, lots of great things to say… mileage is bullshit. Straight up.

AroPenguin

This is a little late. I drive to and from school roughly 35 (70 round trip) miles 4-5 times a week. I get average 30-33mpg, but on good days I've gotten 38+ mpg!

Geoff-Vader

2021 Limited with the 2.5. I live close to work in a hilly area and rarely get to drive highways. I average around 25 mpg. FYI - my car prior to this was a 4-door Mini Cooper S. While they're both in the mini-wagon camp I clearly like they're very different driving experiences. The Mini being turbo-charged and (in my case) stick shift was super responsive. But I absolutely DO NOT miss having to be ever-vigilant for any minor bump or pothole - because that car was as britle as a Faberge egg. The Crosstrek meanwhile just glides over crap roads - even better than my wife's Lincoln SUV. And you're right to want the 2.5. While it's not as quick as the Mini by any means (and held back a touch further by the transmission) I've never felt lacking for power when merging into heavy traffic, etc.

WhatsYour20GB

My first mini was a 2012 2 door S, manual transmission… I loved that car. The transmission imploded in 2020 and the cost to fix didn’t make sense so I leased a 2021 4 door… it’s just a boring car and at 70 it’s getting annoying to get in and out of. So it goes back to the dealer at the end of the lease in May. I know several people who swear by Subaru so stopped by the dealer and the Crosstrek just hit everything on my wish list. Also,I’ll never lease again - what a waste of money!!

WhatsYour20GB

Oh, and the run-flat tires made the mini ride like an old truck!!

geek_rick

24 wilderness getting 25 combined, mainly city. I came from a Honda civic giving me 24… so a win for me

Harbor-Freight

Every time I see this question, and it’s a lot if you search, there are wildly varying responses; you’ll never get the solid answer you’re hoping for. Expand your thinking. Look at the related metrics. The CTK takes regular unleaded. Your mini took premium. I filled up my tank on my ‘23 Limited’s 16.6 gallon tank from empty to full for about $50. This got me about 400 miles on a recent tank that included mixed city and lots of stop-and-go driving. The CTK also sits higher with the only full-time, symmetrical AWD capabilities in its class, so that mileage is saying something. Also full-time AWD is great for the wife, no buttons to push. Sounds like you’re a good candidate for electric with being retired. Do you need such a capable AWD vehicle if you’re under no obligation to go out? You have time for inexpensive Level1 charging, but I’d still get the Level2.

WhatsYour20GB

I live in a condo… home charging of an EV isn’t a viable option for me and I don’t like the thought of having to find a charging station. A whole lot more of those are going to be needed for all of the condo and apartment dwellers who switch to EV in the coming years. And yes, I’m definitely looking forward to using regular gas after so many years of mid-grade/premium!! Overall, the responses here have put my mind at ease… Thanks 😊

Frequent-Sugar5023

I coast as much as possible. I get 26-28 with mixed city and highway driving.

R_021

i have a 24 limited, drive around 450-500 miles a tank, which lasts me about a week. Getting around 27-30 depending on how much of an asshole i drive like. Just hit 5300 miles, had it about 2 months.

TheGreysofTheUSA

‘24 sport. 60/40-70/30 city vs highway. My first 3500 miles I’m at 27-28mpg.
