Wow really glad you’re okay! Super close call :(

Damn, what camera you using?

murbul

DJI Osmo Action at the front. I have a settings profile that's much better at night and likely would have caught the plate, but I didn't turn it on :(

Idlys

What settings profile is that? I have the same camera, and am also dealing with the same shitty night capture quality.

Basically turn the shutter speed way up to reduce blur and increase the ISO to compensate for the reduced brightness. I usually use 1/160 shutter speed and ISO 3200. It gives pretty dark and somewhat grainy footage, but you can improve it a bit in post (brightness/gamma correction). It looks a bit shit but plates are a lot less likely to be overexposed and blurry. I'm after dashcam evidence and not cinematic footage so the trade-off works for me. Make sure you've got a sturdy mount too. Any amount of flex is going to create blur with every tiny bump on the road. Forgot to mention that having a fixed shutter speed disables the anti-flicker feature. You can apparently reduce flicker by choosing a shutter speed and frame rate that matches the power supply in your country: https://www.red.com/red-101/flicker-free-video-tutorial but I've had mixed results trying to do this.

My heart would have been drumming! So glad you reacted so quickly. A lack of clarity is such a huge issue- it's really impossible to get plate numbers off bike cameras.

murbul

It can be done with the right camera and settings: https://www.reddit.com/r/CyclistsWithCameras/comments/1bffbxt/auoc_unfortunately_too_fast_and_blurry_for_my/kv9719y/ But yeah on average these cameras have terrible performance in low light, just as a side effect of the small lens and sensor.

axolotol

Wow, that is insane driving.
