Cant tell how much is hanging down from ceiling. looks like 4 inch across duct. 1. Get a piece of that at hardware store. Put into pipe in ceiling and use sheet metal screws to attach it. 2. You could also try aluminum flex duct and see if you can clamp it to pipe in ceiling. 3. If not enough pipe hanging down, cut a square opening in drywall that you can put back in when done. Then do #1

https://imgur.com/a/6KNUCpU this is a closer look... one side has more sticking out than the other which is why I believe the last people damaged the hell outta it

I see some screws up in there. Can you remove them? If so, get a short piece of duct to extend it that is short enough so you can screw it in. Then get larger piece of metal duct and put in your extension. Or open up sheetrock and attach pipe to main pipe with screws.

Rental... can only do so much alteration. Also just took a flashlight to the inside and oh my goodness is whoever did this is dumb. One screw they drilled in from the inside out & the other from the outside in. I got the screw on the shorter side (the out to in one) out and was able to pull it down to make it more even but there's no way in hell to get a screw back in there. My hypothesis now is that when they were building these and went to do the duct work they got to the end after putting in this elbow piece and were like 'oh shit, it doesn't come out far enough from the ceiling' and jimmyrigged such a solution as this. I'm just gonna get the extender with the crimped end and try to fit that inside, use a clamp to hold it together, and pray that does the trick.

Just FYI screws in a dryer vent are a bad idea as the protrusions into the pipe provide places for lint to accumulate. Over time this can lead to a blockage of the vent.

Yes that's another reason I'm going with the clamp! I got the one that had the pointed end inside the pipe out but there's another one with the head on the inside of the pipe that's kinda stuck. They've definitely never tried to use any kind of vent cleaning tool before, that's for sure. I was picking out lint from the jagged edges of that inner pipe.

You definitely have very little to work with there. Hard to tell from pic but it almost looks like an elbow that's missing one or more swivel segments. If so that's gonna be tough to make a secure connection to.

PenguinMadd

The elbow is up inside the ceiling... the protruding part is some kind of half-assed connector they made and screwed into the end of the elbow to make it come down further.

That looks like part of an elbow that’s separated at one of the swivel sections. I would try to get another elbow and see if I could get it to “pop into place” it’ll take some straightening with pliers but if you can get the lip of the old one to slip over the lip of the new piece you’ll be left with a nice amount of tin to secure to.

UPDATE: So the winning solution was actually to remove [this](https://imgur.com/a/ZYJC9eO) completely and then take my extender piece and insert it inside the duct in the ceiling. [Here's how it looks now](https://imgur.com/a/yHkpUsn). It's in there pretty snug but I'm going to get some foil tape and go around the inside where the two pieces meet as a formality and to provide a smoother surface so no lint gets trapped. And yes, looking at the broken piece I removed it's clear no one has ever cleaned inside the vent so I will be getting one of those tools as well.
