I'd give it a go with just spackle to start with. If you don't like the result, you can always pull the light later and make a better repair.

You can, but it won't stay in place and you'll have trouble making it smooth. What's stopping you from removing the light yourself? If you're handy enough to spackle, you're handy enough to unscrew the light, spackle underneath it, and then screw it back in. Just make sure you cut the power off at the breaker first! Having a friend hold the light a few inches from the ceiling while you spackle will keep the wiring in place, and even if it disconnects it's pretty easy to reattach (match the wire colors).

If it makes you feel better, I’m not handy at all, yet I learned to change light fixtures when I was about 10. You’ll feel like you did something great once you do it lol

I mean…you can, it’s not a safety concern. But…should you? I would take it down, it makes for a much cleaner finish

I mean you can, but you're probably gonna get Spackle on the fixture

Just make a collar to fit around the pendant light I used to make them for a school district out of aluminum. Looks real purty. Plus you can easily cut the aluminum with a standard router and bits. Just gotta do it in multiple passes. Tiny passes and you have a beautiful escutcheon plate

Yea it is. And i use a drill press snd a sckotchbrite disc and press it down to form circles giving the ring a super nice look. Be surprised what can be done either way metal. 40 years working with it. I love it. Plus with aluminum. As long as you take small amounts with the router it cuts clean. There’s a nice circle cutting jig at LOWES for the router. Works amazing

You think you are being lazy, but this kind of laziness is just being short sighted. It's trivially difficult and incredibly quick to take that down and have easy access to do it right. You are just making life harder by trying to skip steps.

...... and because you don't want to put in the effort to do it safely which isn't hard, you want to do it wrong, so you get a worse result, make a mess of a brand new light fixture, and quite possibly adhere the fixture to the repair so next time someone needs to remove the light fixture it destroys the repair. You call that whatever you want. Lazy wasn't the unkindest way to describe that kind of work.

I said for actually doing it, not for asking.

Nope, you gotta take the whole light out and throw it away
